My Day of Scandal (and Media Alert)

It’s been a tough day here at the Morrissey household. I awoke to the sound of sniper fire in my office, forcing me to dash under the desk rather than do my normal greeting ceremony with my keyboard and a cup of coffee. After ensuring that Sinbad and the Little Admiral could conduct their show, I determined that the sounds of sniper fire came from a hard drive that had a meltdown overnight. All of my data and all of the programs necessary for my blogging and the Ed Morrissey Show had disappeared.
Embittered, I grabbed my gun and my Bible. I looked around for someone to hate, but the First Mate was the only one here — and I’m not stupid. Of course, I had to get to work, but I looked around in vain for a federal government solution to my problem, increasing my cynicism. That meant I had to fend for myself, and so I stopped clinging to my gun and Bible long enough to spend most of the morning adapting my backup laptop for the show today.
After the show was over, I took the computer back to Best Buy, which couldn’t track down the warranty information. I told them that I needed this resolved quickly, as I had some recipes on my hard drive, modified from a Baker’s Square codebook that I wanted to post as my own on Hot Air. They scoffed at the notion, saying that the drive had eaten my recipes, which might explain why it died in the first place. (I’m not a good cook.) They finally found my warranty, but their cynicism further embittered me to the point where I bought a Bible program for my computer.
Did you know that Best Buy doesn’t sell guns? Not even in my small Midwestern town?
I’ll have to rebuild the PC’s system when Best Buy replaces the hard drive. That will likely take all week. At 7 pm CT, I’ll discuss my bitterness with Rick Moran on his BTR talk show. By that time, I may find an immigrant or two to disparage as well, and I’ll have to restrain my anti-trade sentiments.

OSX only runs in a very limited environment.
No SLI, No Crossfire..

A 2600XT or 8800GT? for a MacPRO? BWAHAHAHA!
Now thats POWER!!! LMAO
Chakra Hammer on April 15, 2008 at 11:27 PM
Because OSX works when you control the hardware. Try writing an OS that works with a million possible combinations and you can see why they weren’t anxious to license it.
TheBigOldDog on April 15, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Another advantage of PC over Mac–networking. For your basic home network, Mac should be fine. But Macs act up a lot in a large office-type network. And this I know from personal experience.
You stole that line from Steve Jobs at the “Leopard” unveiling. The only thing I could say about that is system requirements. If your system can handle Vista Ultimate, why give it Vista Basic?
Look, I’ll respect your opinion. I’ve used PCs all my computer using life and I’m used to them. Macs do have SOME advantages (Garageband and iMovie are pretty decent for preloaded software), but I’m still not sold. As for the Macs are for liberals thing…go to any Starbucks in America. “Impeach Bush” stickers and those Apple stickers sit side by side on every Prius in the lot. Whether it’s true or not, Mac users have quite a reputation.

Laserdisc got robbed.
malan89 on April 15, 2008 at 11:30 PM
Unless you actively participate in the Mac community, how would you know? I’m not trying to be a snot, just curious. From what I’ve seen over the years, there are a ton of tech savvy people in the Mac community. Given that OS X is built on one strain of UNIX, it’s not that surprising.
If you ever managed a corporate network or done tech support, surely you must also realize just how many tech un-savvy people there out there using Windows?
Mindcrime on April 15, 2008 at 11:30 PM
So Windows doesn’t suck?
It’s more versatile than OSX?

Chakra Hammer on April 15, 2008 at 11:34 PM
What kind of man are you? You can’t even do basic changing of a hard-drive and re-installing an OS?
Tim Burton on April 15, 2008 at 11:35 PM
I agree that there are some die-hard macatrons out there. I can’t walk into an Apple store without giggling at the boys in tight black shirts. You also have to understand that most of those apple stickers in cars are from iPods. My wife has one in her Scion. Also, I didn’t watch the unveiling of Leopard. Steve Jobs is a nutjob. But it’s true, one price, one OS. Also, I don’t own an iPhone–nor will I. Overpriced crap, that is.
robblefarian on April 15, 2008 at 11:35 PM
Gee i dunno, maybe because I’ve been in the industry since 1982?
You’re not seriously trying to compare the number of tech savvy people using Macs Vs Windows are you? Even if you assume 20% of each user community is tech Savvy that makes what, tens of millions of more tech savvy people using Wintel boxes.
tech savvy people want the flexibility and breath of options that just aren’t available on a Apple platform.
TheBigOldDog on April 15, 2008 at 11:38 PM
How much graphics power do you need? Are you running Doom or something on ten monitors?
Anywho, I’m going to bed. It was cool discussing the mac/pc thing with ya’ll. Nighty night!
robblefarian on April 15, 2008 at 11:39 PM
Windows is more versatile than OSX. Vista was a very poor, bloated, overpriced and annoying implementation of it. Part of the problem is perhaps, trying to copy OSX rather than realizing their user base didn’t want that.
TheBigOldDog on April 15, 2008 at 11:42 PM
I don’t intend to buy an Iphone either. All I want a phone to do is make calls. I don’t care about texting, or web browsing or any of that junk, just want to make an occasional telephone call. I don’t have an Ipod either. I have a Rio Carbon. Ipod didn’t do what I needed, the Rio did. Best for me. No marketing hype, just functionality.
Oldnuke on April 15, 2008 at 11:42 PM
You’re the one who said tech savvy in the Mac community are in “the vast minority”. All I am saying is how would you know if you don’t participate specifically in the Mac community. Being in the “industry” doesn’t mean you know shit about tech savvy Mac people if your only exposure to them has been your wife’s computer.
As for comparing % of tech savvy people between the two, of course it’s ridiculous. My point was just because a person works on a Windows box doesn’t mean he or she is tech savvy by default. You can complain about all the simple-minded Mac people out there but there are relatively the same number of witless Windows users out there as well. “Relative” being the key word here.

wow, 3 pages of geek chat… i’ve got a lot of reading to do
TheCulturalist on April 15, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Point made. I’ve actually seen a woman ask the IT guy why she can’t check her e-mail in Word. There are morons using both Mac and PC. But I will say that Macs are HORRIBLE on corporate networks. I don’t know nearly enough to manage one, but I do know that the PCs worked well with each other and ran smoothly but the one batch of Macs we got sucked. Maybe if you set up a network that is built to be only used on Macs works better, but they certainly don’t play nice with the PCs on the network.
Of course not… Why would I do that?………… I’m certainly not THAT big a geek……. (laughs nervously)
malan89 on April 15, 2008 at 11:45 PM
Before you get 64-bit Windows, be ABSOLUTELY SURE that 64-bit drivers are available for all you hardware. If you have something (say a scanner) that doesn’t have 64-bit drivers available, you won’t be able to use it.
OSX is roughly based on BSD. It’s basically a BSD-style system with a strange, proprietary kernel (Mach). The kernel is actually closer NEXTSTEP from NeXT (another Jobs company).
Macs are OK. I just don’t find them particularly “usable.” However, it is personal opinion.
Performance-wise, they are on par with PC platforms now–in fact Intel Macs are nearly identical to contemporary PC hardware.
The biggest issue with Mac is software availability and overall cost. There are MUCH fewer software titles available for Mac. Yes, the “usual stuff:” Office, Adobe CS3 software, etc. is available but many other titles, especially those from smaller software companies are not available for Mac.
The other issue is hardware cost. You can get a pretty darn nice PC for $500-$600. An equivalent Mac will cost you nearly $2000. The current base model iMac starts at $1200. Mac Mini is cheaper ($600), but is very limited.
mojojojo on April 15, 2008 at 11:47 PM
Yeah we’re deciding which is better Mac or PC. No real winner yet but I think the PC has the edge simply because of sheer numbers.
Oldnuke on April 15, 2008 at 11:47 PM
When you’ve been around it as long as I have it becomes obvious. There’s no comparison. Even people who start off clueless on Wintel become very savvy over time.
TheBigOldDog on April 15, 2008 at 11:48 PM
Well you will need more than one 8800GT to run Crysis at a decent resolution on that 30inch monitor! LOL
Chakra Hammer on April 15, 2008 at 11:48 PM
I’ll summarize.
“Why didn’t Ed back his files up?”
“I dunno, that was dumb.”
“Hey, you know what sucks? MAC!”
“Yeah, Windows PWNS Mac.”
“Sure. But just about every obsure linux distribution pwns Windows.”
“Yeah. Did you build your own computer?”
“Yeah….”
(About a page of talk about graphics cards and RAM until the Mac fanboy shows up)
“Ya know, Mac actually doesn’t suck that bad.”
This is where the sh*t hits the fan.
malan89 on April 15, 2008 at 11:49 PM
A bum hard drive can really ruin your day. A good share of the time, Best Buy can make a bad day get worse.

TheCulturalist on April 16, 2008 at 12:16 AM
For PC users, the computer is just a tool, often a frustrating and annoying one.
For Mac users, the computer is an elegant and pleasurable device. It’s the difference between driving a Ford Falcon and a new BMW. Sure, you can soup up the Falcon, throw in a big V8 and monster wheels, and you’ll be smokin’ the competition, and it’ll be fun. But it won’t be the quiet pleasure of running a beautifully-made piece of machinery.
Yes, Macs use the same basic components as PCs, but the OS is a joy to use, not a burden, and the products themselves are masterpieces of industrial design.
I manage an office full of PCs, and am on one (usually via a Parallels virtual machine on my MacBook Pro) every day, but I’ve been using Macs since 1987, and they just get better and better.
No viruses and spyware, either.
MrLynn on April 16, 2008 at 12:21 AM
Ed, I had this happen (except worse).
Trust me. Best easy solution:
1. Buy an extra 500g internal HD ($119) and stick it in your PC.
2. Buy Acronis True Image ($79)
3. Use Acronis to schedule a complete image of your C drive to your extra drive. Then run incrementals only each week or month.
4. Relax
Most other solutions do not backup “open files”. Most of the files you need are usually open.
faraway on April 16, 2008 at 12:24 AM
isn’t that more a function of their relative scarcity rather than anything inherently superior? i could be wrong, but i thought i read something during one of the blackhat expo thingies in Vegas regarding the lack of hacker attention paid to the Mac world because it wasn’t really the platform of choice at their favorite targets. like the gov’t and businessesssss. no?

Then why waste your money on a Mac? Buy a Dell with Ubuntu preloaded and save yourself a nice chunk of change. Or buy a system with no OS loaded and install another flavor of Linux and save a lot of cash. That’s if you’re just surfing, checking email, posting online and such…
It’s not a matter of being cooler than others; it’s about saving dollars on something that has a relatively short shelf-life. I have an XP system that I built for $350.00. 1GB RAM, Intel Core Duo processor, 160GB HD, ASUS motherboard, etc. And I also saved $$$ by using OpenOffice from Sun Microsystems. Who needs Office anymore when you can use a productivity suite like OpenOffice and web email?

Snake307 on April 16, 2008 at 4:22 AM
I have both and like both.
Never really been keen on the way that most mac users (especially the converts) talk about their Macs as if they are the incarnation of the Prophet Barack Obama. Sure, it’s nice kit but it’s just kit – it exists to fulfill a function. No need to act like an Islamic convert about what is essentially a bunch of chips.
I have bigger issues with the fact that Jobs wears tight black tshirts, talks an awful load of hooey, and gave Al Gore a seat on the board. No doubt my next macs will be programmed to save the planet.

I think part of the fanaticism is a bunker mentality thing — Mac users have seen what they think is a better system dominated by Windows for so long that any triumph by OSX or flaw in something like Vista is triumphed, while any flaws in the OS or in Macs in general are downplayed (just try to argue with a Mac true believer that Jobs is 20 years behind the times by still shipping a one-button mouse as a standard accessory).
We’ve got both Macs (OS 10.3.9 to 10.5.1) and PCs (Windows XP, Vista and even one leftover 98 machine) at the office, and just installed the 1 TB Time Capsule as our server’s backup system. Works great, even if activiating the wireless router aspect of it drove me up a wall for two days, while the security restrictions on the Vista machine we have running the Home Premium version can be an annoying nightmare when networking (you’ve got to go down into DOS to lower the security level to where it will permit access, because the Vista HP offers no control screen to adjust those settings). So I’ve got issues with Mr. Gates’ latest OS. But even though I like the hierarchal layout of OS X’s directory system, there are still glitches, such as USB connected portable drives or smart cards that claim they’ve been ejected, but really haven’t, leaving you with an error message on the card when you try to use it in a camera 15 minutes later, and if you don’t have a spare card with you, you’re SOL until you can get it reconnected to a Mac and ejected properly.
So with both systems, sooner or later there’s going to be a “hit it with a hammer and throw it on the railroad tracks” moment. It’s just not worth getting all that impassioned about (now Firefox versus Internet Explorer or Safari….)

Sorry to hear the bad news Ed.
Question: Did the Best Buy employee tell you that downloading a bible program was a violation of your warranty?
Sounds like you tear off the tags from you mattress and pillows too and this the governments way of getting even with you for having a wonderful blog and a friendship with MM.

Actually as of OSX 10.5, OSX is certified 03 level UNIX. In truth. I do despise Microsoft’s current business model even more than I despise Apple’s. Despite playing with Linux for over ten years, Neither Linux nor Solaris satisfy my computing needs and IRIX hasn’t been developed much in years. VM’s are getting to the stage where I depend on them and I’ll likely build my next box with a Linux host OS and various guest OSs

I seriously need to bust out the wife’s iMac and put Panther or something X on it.
Ed, sux to have that happen – I think the monitor that blew up in my rack scared me the most. Couldn’t figure out what had smoked, it was thick and nasty. Took weeks to air our computer room out!
I, on the otherhand, am looking FORWARD to tearing into my box in a couple days. I’ve been working on this loafy Celeron 420 processor as a stop-gap until my Q9450 arrived (yesterday!!!). Now I get to rip all the fans, 8800 GTs and reinstall with Swiftech water-cooling! I’m giving my old system to my pop – I told him he just needs to check the water level every month or so. It’s just like taking care of a plant.
Might I suggest Ed you seriously look at either getting (like some others have suggested) a spare hard drive for backups or if you’re fiesty, move to RAID 1. I can tell you how many times running RAID in my personal box has saved my arse. Granted, I’m not running normal stuff, but having a 3ware RAID 5 with 4 Raptors helps me sleep.

had a powersupply go out once and it took out every other internal part. except the floppy. left that alone…
stongly advise something “outside the box” just in case that happens…
