Video: Defender of the common man jeered for knocking Obama’s elitism

Think you’ll be seeing this clip on Olbermann’s show tonight? Think he’ll deign to note Team Hillary’s claim that the jeers were organized by Obama’s SEIU boosters, an allegation reported by Olby’s own network but not-so-curiously omitted from other reports of the incident?

My hunch, notwithstanding the dismal poll news for His Holiness this morning, is that Bittergate won’t help her much. There’s new data out from Gallup suggesting as much, but you don’t need it. Just watch the clip. She can’t sell this message. BJ could have sold it; Silky could have sold it, palatial home or no. But Her Majesty? Who once sneered at stay-at-home moms for choosing cookie-baking over work? Only John Kerry among major Democrats is less suited for this line of attack. Even she seems to sense the absurdity, which is why her criticism of him seems so lukewarm and soft-spoken even though the situation calls for high dudgeon. (That’s not the only reason, of course. To really hammer him, as Kaus does towards the end of his post, she’d have to wonder aloud what sorts of insecurities elite liberalism might spring from, a crime for which the left would never forgive her.) Beyond that, though, the politics of authenticity insulate Obama uniquely from this charge. He can’t be snobbish or “out of touch,” by definition: He’s a liberal and a minority. QED. Michael Steele, though? Every bit the disdainful elitist sellout that Obama isn’t, purely by virtue of his party affiliation. Challenging that line of thinking in a Democratic primary would be tough for anyone, but for Hillary, whose perceived phoniness is her defining public trait? Impossible.

Speaking of which, here’s the Messiah having a laugh at the latest manifestation of that phoniness this morning in Pennsylvania. There’s no punchline; there doesn’t need to be. The idea of Hillary knocking back shots at the local pub with the hoi polloi is all he needs. Exit question: Don’t you hate it when candidates pull these embarrassing, man-of-the-people photo ops? On the bright side, with $109 million in the bank she can buy a lot of shots.

JammieWearingFool on April 14, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Wow … the socialist, elitist, tool known as “Obama” has drones planted everywhere.

darwin on April 14, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Heh. Lovely folks, those Obama supporters.

Welcome to the dark side, Hillary supporters. We really are nicer in this big GOP tent. And we like shots and beer too!

funky chicken on April 14, 2008 at 2:44 PM

BITTERGATE!!! lmao

Allahpundit you magnificent bastard you’ve done it again bravo

Kevin43 on April 14, 2008 at 2:47 PM

He can’t be snobbish or “out of touch,” by definition: He’s a liberal and a minority.

Such a great point.

Zetterson on April 14, 2008 at 2:48 PM

She is soo Tracy Flick. What a light weight. Does she really think people buy this nonsense.

RobCon on April 14, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Admission time:

Those of you who were shocked that I (or others) might not vote at all (given our choice of McCain versus either Shrillary or Obamamessiah)…well, you guys may have had a point.

Hillary and Obama are horrible candidates. What an aweful mess. So fake. So sneaky. So elitist. So vile.

Maybe I will vote for McCain.

Montana on April 14, 2008 at 2:50 PM

Only John Kerry among major Democrats is less suited for this line of attack.

I don’t think Teddy Kennedy can sell it, either.

amerpundit on April 14, 2008 at 2:51 PM

Bittergate? Yes. It’s also Snootgate.

For self, Schadenfreudengate.

Rosie “U R who U R. B URself, B happy”.

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 2:53 PM

That last link (Politico), though pre-Bittergate, is full of nuggets.

Michael Ventura, 57, a retired sheriff leaning toward Clinton because of her husband’s oratorical skills, said an Obama event Friday in Greensburg gave him the chance “to see him in person and see the facial expressions, to look at him.”

OPERATION CHAOS!

Brat on April 14, 2008 at 2:56 PM

Maybe I will vote for McCain.

Montana on April 14, 2008 at 2:50 PM

There, Army Aunt will make you a home-cooked meal :)

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 2:57 PM

The Stalin vs. Trotsky knife-fight continues.

OhEssYouCowboys on April 14, 2008 at 2:58 PM

Montana, I’m pleased to hear that. McCain certainly wasn’t my first, second, or third choice. But he’s a far sight better than HilObama. We have troops in harm’s way and Obama and Clinton would betray them. It sucks, but that’s where we’re at.

funky chicken on April 14, 2008 at 2:58 PM

I think she was going to say we need “Universal Hair Care” – Freudian slip maybe?

pappy on April 14, 2008 at 2:58 PM

I don’t think Teddy Kennedy can sell it, either.

He’d rather drink it!

dmann on April 14, 2008 at 2:58 PM

Their both “enlightened” Christians who only worry about forcing you to care for the poor, and forcing you to accept their morals. They look down on those that believe in sin and consequence

PrezHussein on April 14, 2008 at 2:58 PM

How come no one in the media, or on the blogs, has focused on the interesting way in which the Obama flop was recorded at the billionaire event, by likely a billionaire-for-Hillary, and handed over to the HuffPoo?

That is a very interesting part of the story, and strangely ignored.

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 3:00 PM

This “Defender of the Common Man” shtick is hilarious.

baldilocks on April 14, 2008 at 3:03 PM

Egads, she looks like she’s been traveling across America carrying her bags under her eyes. Clinton’s tired.

baldilocks on April 14, 2008 at 3:05 PM

That last Obama clip – sure the shot and a beer line was cute, but man, did he set out to make an attack ad on himself????

Someone who never noticed how off-key JWright’s energetic preaching style is, and he’s claiming to be ‘in touch’? Someone who grew up in a tropical paradise, then launched on an extremely elite educational arc, and has essentially done nothing but academia and politics, is ‘in touch’???

Then after the cutesy line, he goes on about pols that accept money from special interests and pacs? Hello, Tony!!!!

He keeps hitting homers like that, and he’s going to dream of the days he was within 20 of the Glacier in the Keystone state.

Regardless of how completely and utterly AP is in the bag for Barry O.

Wind Rider on April 14, 2008 at 3:05 PM

baldilocks, indeed, on the part of any politician. It’s amazing how ‘down-to-earth’ and ‘like us’ they all become when it’s time to vote. None of them, hardly, can claim moral authority on topic.

Some, however, are more ridiculous at it. Hillary is ending up a carricature of herself. Obama’s haughtiness was always there. I find it hilarious that he had to point it out to the naive masses, and did a fine job of it.

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 3:06 PM

Welcome to all the former Obama and Clinton supporters!!!

Thanks for stopping by. You are not alone. There’s lots of us ex-progressives here.

You might also want to check out The Corner for up-to-the-minute commentary that is usually sensible. Peace out.

Not even Hot Air or Kaus or Baldilocks have really hit the following on the head.

Obama supports the religious practice of Reverend Wright, and opposes the religious practice of white small-town Americans. And Obama says he wants to transcend the politics of race.

Comment of the day, from another thread:

Most excellent post Mr. Pundit.

rockhauler on April 14, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Given Hillary’s penchant for ineptness, I’m waiting for her to show up at her next rally in overalls sporting a John Deer cap and looking like a Hee Haw extra.

$20 says she’s currently working with a voice coach to master a Minnie Pearl-esque accent.

moxie_neanderthal on April 14, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Darn! no overalls but I’d like to think I heard a little extra twang as she sang her tune.

moxie_neanderthal on April 14, 2008 at 3:24 PM

Hillary is pro-gun and for national hair care? Awesome.

Can she explain any of the solutions for all of the wonderful things that happen when she is elected? More income for us, more jobs, but how?

Hening on April 14, 2008 at 3:24 PM

I can shoot
I can hunt
I’m for animal rights
I can cook

I’m for (illegal) immigration
I’m for a fence
I’m for bringing the troops home
I’m for defense
I’m for nativism
I’m for nuance

On, and on, and on…

I’m for anything you want me to be; just tell me what you wish for, and abracadabra, you shall have it when I’m president.
Hillary Clinton/Barack Obama approved this message.

If she says “ya know” one more time, I cannot be held responsible for my actions.

txsurveyor on April 14, 2008 at 3:27 PM

One Barack, one shot and one beer.

Hening on April 14, 2008 at 3:27 PM

Hillary just cemented my vote with the promise of Universal Haircare.

Like many Americans I am unable to afford a decent $400 haircut because of the vested interests in Big Hair-ma.

Hillz feels my pain, and the pain of many millions of other Americans who have to resort to barbers or even cut their own hair.

You go girl.

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 3:00 PM

Good point. Almost certainly this story has its genesis in a pro-Hillary sneak who recorded Obama’s comments. So now, a few days later, Obama is weakened and Hillary, with this dismal performance and her ridiculous “extolling the virtues of the common man” schtick is further weakened too.

So the only one to benefit from this debacle is McCain. So my question is, given the likely originator of the story was in cahoots with the Hillary camp, how much more will the Democratic hierarchy hate her than they did before? She’s getting no more superdelegates out of this. She has not a prayer of getting the nomination and all that has been done is that her Democrat opponent may have been fatally weakened.

schiehallion on April 14, 2008 at 3:45 PM

Jeeez-o-Pete. It is impossible to imagine a more inept campaign than that run by Mrs Clinton. She’s been given a complete pass by the media on the Clinton Years, comes into the campaign with the flower pedals and carpet all but rolled out and she trips on the rug!

Mr Obama has had at least 3-4 major missteps, any one of which had the potential to derail his campaign or at least give her traction but she can’t even get out of first gear.

Someone in her campaign needs to wave the smelling salts under her nose and get her eating raw liver because she looks totally anemic.

She may have a reputation for being a ruthless bitch, but you could only prove her to be a ruthless, inept bitch and that’s the distinction that is currently on display.

They did on the blogs. They attacked the source that published it. They attacked the source that recorded it. Mayhill Fowler is now a marked woman.

Google search “Mayhill Fowler”

Obama just wants to be President so that he can make his $109 Million, he doesn’t give a damn about the little people.

Chakra Hammer on April 14, 2008 at 3:52 PM

Is it me or does Hillary look completely exhausted? Her voice is wearing down, the bags under her eyes are growing. The campaign trail is a schedule that most of us can’t comprehend, but I’m wondering if she’s healthy enough to be President. Barack is in great shape, Hillary is running out of steam. I really hope McCain picks Romney as his running mate, I don’t think the Maverick will make it through an entire term.
