Obama hits a 20-point stumble in PA

It looks like the voters of small-town Pennsylvania have reacted to Barack Obama’s remarks at a San Francisco fundraiser in a predictable manner. American Research Group had Obama rising to a tie against Hillary Clinton in the next primary after trailing by double digits for weeks preceding his ascent. Now he has dug himself an even deeper hole than the one he earlier escaped:

Pennsylvania
Democrats Mar
7-8
Mar
26-27
Apr
5-6
Apr
11-13

Clinton 52% 51% 45% 57%
Obama 41% 39% 45% 37%
Someone else 1% 2% 4% 2%
Undecided 6% 8% 6% 4%

Hillary Clinton leads Barack Obama 48% to 44% among men (45% of likely Democratic primary voters). Among women, Clinton leads 64% to 31%.

Clinton leads 64% to 29% among white voters (82% of likely Democratic primary voters). Obama leads 79% to 18% among African American voters (14% of likely Democratic primary voters). …

10% of all likely Democratic primary voters say they would never vote for Hillary Clinton in the primary and 24% of likely Democratic primary voters say they would never vote for Barack Obama in the primary.

That looks very grim for Obama as he heads into working class states such as Indiana and Kentucky. Prior to calling small-town middle America a bunch of xenophobic bigots who cling to guns and religion out of economic bitterness, Obama had made headway in taking those voters away from Hillary Clinton. He had succeeded in convincing them that Hillary was trying to destroy the Democratic party by creating unnecessary divisions. His sop to the Frisco liberal elite has completely undermined that argument and left him vulnerable once again to the overall electability counterargument.

If Obama begins to lose big in these states, the superdelegates will find themselves under even tougher scrutiny. Do they vote for the elitist or the Tuzla Dash candidate? (via Jim Geraghty)

From the Bill Kristol editorial:

What does this mean for Obama’s presidential prospects? He’s disdainful of small-town America — one might say, of bourgeois America. He’s usually good at disguising this. But in San Francisco the mask slipped. And it’s not so easy to get elected by a citizenry you patronize.

And what are the grounds for his supercilious disdain? If he were a war hero, if he had a career of remarkable civic achievement or public service — then he could perhaps be excused an unattractive but in a sense understandable hauteur. But what has Barack Obama accomplished that entitles him to look down on his fellow Americans?

I’d say “despise” rather than “patronize” but I think the point is made regardless.

The wheels have fallen off of this campaign, the slow motion train record that is the Democrat Party pays off once again.

Couldn’t happen to better people. Hope Illinois is happy with their Senator, because they’ll be getting him back.

Maybe in three years the Illinois GOP can get off of the mat and take away his Senate seat as well.

Then Michelle will really have something to whine about.

Once again the voters remind us that no liberal can get elected unless they pretend to be something else. If someone sneaks a video camera into a private speech, everyone ends up acting surprised by the elitist, Marxist drivel that spews out of them.

No wonder they think that if you tape a conservative at a private speech, it would all be racism and bigotry. That’s all they know.

Despite the PR etc it has always been Hillary’s nomination to lose.

Rush is getting his worst nightmare–a stronger candidate and probably the next president. Myself and others have long argued that Hillary needed to have a stake driven thru her, pinning her to the ground as she turned to ashes before we were convinced she would not win. Folks, and you know who you are, let her off the hook in Texas and now she’ll probably be the next president. Had Rush and crew kept their mouths shut Obama’s missteps would be helping McCain, now instead they strengthen Clinton and her money grubbing dirt bag husband. A husband who raises money by taking opposite views and probably peddling favors for Hillary which then goes into their/her bank accounts. You can’t make up sleaze like this. Meanwhile the press ignores it and McCain lauds Hillary as a great American.

I’m going to barf.

“Bigotry and its consequences”

I didn’t see anything in Obama’s comments that would suggest he is bigoted, Ed. Bigot is “one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance”. It was very clear that he was trying to understand and explain what he believed what was occurring in small town Pennsylvania.

Are you talking about Obama’s or small town Pennsylvania’s?

Or are you just trying to be needless inflamatory because you’re now paid by Michelle Malkin?

patrick neid on April 14, 2008 at 11:56 AM

It’s a reasonable argument to make. But Rush’s response, that McCain is responsible for his own win or loss also holds water. If McCain needs Republicans/Conservatives so much because of a re-surgent Hillary, then he will have to tack to the right and fight hard. Let the chips fall where they may.

When Obama referred to his (white) grandmother as a “typical white person”, didn’t that fit the shoe of “bigotry”? And what about his choice of “spiritual advisor”? “Reverend” [W]right (not!) doesn’t help his image at all.

So, before you accuse Ed of something he’s not, think, read again, and STHU.

Fortunately, the Democratic candidates both seem to have an Automatic Foot In Mouth Reflex; both have spouses that don’t know when to keep quiet; and both are close associates with a varied cast of complete morons. Even if voters don’t remember the Tuzla Shuffle or the Bitter Pill in six months, I’m sure there will be plenty other things to remember.

You forgot the first part of the M-W definition you quoted. Let me help:

bigot: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

RushBaby on April 14, 2008 at 12:08 PM

Hope Illinois is happy with their Senator, because they’ll be getting him back.

Illinois Democrats do not want Obama back here. Nobody wants to run against him in a primary. They know they’d lose their incumbency.

The last thing the Illinois Democratic Party wants is an Obama Democratic Primary defeat or a defeat in the Presidential race.

gabriel sutherland on April 14, 2008 at 12:11 PM

Uh, Jim, Obama’s assertion that small-town voters “cling to antipathy against people not like them” is calling them bigots — which is its own kind of bigotry and stereotyping.

Barf patrick neid, barf. It will renew you. McCain can sit back and play the sane elder, irony et all, because you have no idea how the media, the RNC, the Blacks, the liberals will attack Hillary for him.

This year is a gratis idiosyncratic melodrama, staged by the left, for the slobbering of the center, to center-right. The country asked for a circus, and boy did it get one. New technology and new media will all help. The ads are writing themselves for free too. Hillary might end up with five times the money, and still lose.

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 12:11 PM

patrick neid on April 14, 2008 at 11:56 AM

I disagree that Hillary is necessarily the stronger candidate. If she was, she’d be winning right now and others would be asking Obama to drop out.

In the end it comes down to the scoreboard. Many people believed Romney was the stronger candidate, but the scoreboard begs to differ.

Also, I’m someone who believes a Dem will be in the White House no matter what. Bush’s approval ratings are at historical lows. It’s about time for a mini revolution where we switch political parties.

If I’m right, I’d rather it was Hillary than Obama.

Esthier on April 14, 2008 at 12:13 PM

Here’s hoping Hillary will beat the drum on this up to the next primary. Nobody else will.

And she still really doesn’t have a shot at the nomination…you guys need to relax. And if by some miracle she does get it, it would break the Democrat party into pieces. You WANT her to win the nomination, truth be told. The Obama supporters will not vote for her in large numbers and she’ll lose 5 to 10 percent of the African American vote if she’s the top of the ticket.

The Democrat party is in a very bad place at the moment. An implosion by Obama that hands the nomination to Hillary will be doom for their chances in the General Election.

jim m on April 14, 2008 at 12:24 PM

If the campaign’s internally conducted polling confirms anything like this ARG(GGGGGHHHHH!) result, then it would explain why Barry O, rather than trying to levitate above the turmoil waiting for it to dissipate on its own, is instead flailing around and helping to sustain it. Rasmussen now has his personal negatives among likely voters at 50% - amazingly high considering where he came from and how deeply in the tank the media have been for him, and not much worse at all than Hillary’s which have been around there forever.

If the dem party rejects Obama because he believes crazy, anti-American, anti-Semitic, hate Whitey things, I’d guess the dem party loses at least half of their reliable black voters (many of whom agree with the crazy stuff, see Keyes, Alicia for a recent example, and Lee, Spike for a past example).

Caveat emptor…this is an ARG Poll. They have been wrong before, both this year and in the past. They’re based here in New Hampshire, and in 1996 they couldn’t even predict the winner of the New Hampshire Primary correctly.

More recently, in December 2007 they said Hillary was ahead of Obama in Iowa-by 15 points! We all know how that one turned out…

If a batch of other polls show this same result, I’ll be convinced. But ARG has been wrong so many times in the past they can’t be considered absolutely reliable.

jim m,
You sound really bitter. Do you live in Pennsylvania?

If they want to fix the gun part of this, they need to have Barry take a Concealed Carry course.

Hotair needs to sponsor a contest in which the winner gets two round trip tickets to the Denver Democratic Convention. It will be the event of a lifetime.

THE CHOSEN ONE on April 14, 2008 at 1:27 PM

The thing about ARG’s results is, at this point, if there’s any inaccuracy, it’s far more likely to incur the wrath of the left than of the right, which is usually the victim of any poll oversampling or other finagling. Obama’s followers are the ones who are going to be raving about pro-Clinton bias here and an effort by ARG to move the Pennsylvania electorate with these numbers.

Coming on top of Hillary’s recent complaints about the media being unfair to her and pro-Obama, it’s funny to watch the Democrats make the same complaints Republicans have yelled about for half a century, only to be told any bias is all in their imagination.

The “disavowal of middleclassness” taught by the Rev. has its drawbacks.

BrianA on April 14, 2008 at 1:51 PM

Long term analysis - the Democrats will believe that the only cure for their problems with middle America is more diversity, i.e. a harder push for amnesty will be forthcoming. If they can’t make whites a minority or a smaller majority their chances of retaking the presidency and implementing full blown socialism remain grim. White America is a problem for them. I believe Ted Kennedy knows this and that has been his prime motivation for his continued push for amnesty. Leaders and supporters of amnesty in the Stupid party (McAmnesty, Graham (SC)) are being played for useful idiots.

I think when the voters of PA discover that ObamaX spent his college summer break in Pakistan, the poll results will be worse.

That’s your job now, and your responsibility.

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 12:22 PM

I haven’t yet decided. I’ll likely hold my nose and vote McCain, but I really don’t want to. I’m a little angry that its come to this considering my state didn’t even get a say. The primaries feel like a joke.

However, the general election will probably change my mind.

If it was anyone but Hillary, I’d agree, but I think the country is sick of family dynastys, plus there is the gag reflex only Hillary can create.

a capella on April 14, 2008 at 12:24 PM

That’s one of the reasons I believe it’s better (for us) for her to be the Dem nominee.

On the plus side, if she wins she’s already hated by many. Her approval ratings will make Bush’s look incredible.

Esthier on April 14, 2008 at 1:59 PM

The strangest thing on the Obama flop is that he was always a smug, inflated, haughty guy.

That it took himself to explain it to the masses, shows how naive they are, media included.

Said media is hyperventillating for him now. His fourth re-explanation of what he said, and meant to say, is the funiest of all. I wish I’d find the text. The audio on the radio sounded hilarious.

What’s most disappointing is that, otherwise smart, and relatively sane people, like Bill Handel, KFI 640AM, LA, are completely in the tank for him, including on excusing the obvious.

Why can’t people hold two thoughts in one head - Obama, and his misses, are as haughty as Messrs Gore/Kerry, and misses Kerry, and Hillary is a hypocrite about it.

War of the roses, and they all stink.

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 2:02 PM

Obama’s views of working class Pennsylvania probably were formed in 1984 by Billy Joel’s song “Allentown”. Mr. Joel had never been in Allentown but wrote a song portraying Allentown as a place of horrendous where there was no work in the iron and steel mills and unemployment anywhere. Mr. Joel wrote silly lyrics but the song had a terrific melody and I am sure that Obama, who was then at Columbia University, probably heard the song and formed his worldview. When the song came out, the supposedly depressed and bitter citizens of Allentown were properly POed at the perception of Allentown. They did not like being portrayed as losers who can’t fend for themselves and can’t educate themselves and have a good life. But that is the way liberal always have always will look at places like Allentown.

There Esthier, now we’re on the same page. I’m no happier with our lot than you are, just worried about our land. They’ll affect it negatively in this ascending order:

McCain
Hillary C.
Obama

Entelechy on April 14, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Peter Wehner describes well the “off the record” Obama, the one who arouses much skepticism and alarm. Obama unmasked infuses the “politics of meaning” with “steroids”, and Wehner says that “our republic deserves better”. Amen!

“Barf patrick neid, barf. It will renew you. McCain can sit back and play the sane elder, irony et all, because you have no idea how the media, the RNC, the Blacks, the liberals will attack Hillary for him.”

That will all be forgotten if and when she gets the nomination. The idea that the Dems, the press, blacks etc won’t rally around their nominee is dubious at best. After only having the White House 12 of the last 40 years they will/would rally around the devil himself. Once the nominee is picked the press, liberals, blacks, TV sitcoms and the Clinton machine will turn their attention to McCain. They will roast him such that you won’t know who he is. And the real trouble–McCain won’t fight back, he will not attack the Clinton’s for the people they are, the sleaze, scandals, the pardons, the money shakedowns, the socialistic economics etc.

funky,

“Hillary, the stronger opponent in November? What are you smoking, fella?”

My actual statement was, it would make her “a stronger candidate and probably the next President”

Why probably the next president? Because the demographics are in the dems favor. I believe and have thought that Obama was the weaker candidate of the two as folks got to know him. Weak enough, I thought, to offset the demographics by getting “blue dogs”, hispanics and independents to switch. If he were to be elected his “politics/economics” would be severely tempered by congress and his lack of having an entrenched machine in place.

If Hillary gets the nod she has a very good chance of winning. Look at the make up of today’s electorate–30% are black, hispanic, jewish, asian, muslim etc. Hillary will get at least 75-80% of that vote. She needs less than 40% of the white vote. Betting you will win vs Hillary because some folks will stay home is iffy at best.

Clinton should have been banished in Texas.

patrick neid on April 14, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Actually, ObamaX called himself Barry until he spent several weeks in Pakistan in 1981 and emerged as Barack.

faraway on April 14, 2008 at 2:20 PM

Obama in a closed door fund raiser in San Fran didn’t mis speak, he wasn’t taken out of context, he used the verbiage and placed it in context the exact way he meant to and whats more, he believes it, just the same way he drank the Pastor Wright Kool Aid and believes that too.

Its the typical liberal hate noise, pol speak and candidate Obama is the furthest left liberal in the Senate, how much more typical can you get?

Speakup on April 14, 2008 at 2:32 PM

Had Rush and crew kept their mouths shut Obama’s missteps would be helping McCain…

patrick neid

Know your enemy my friend. If it is Obama, the left would close ranks and he would be impossible to beat.

McCain doesn’t have the stones to take advantage of any of these resent revelations, and the Dems and MSM would shift into a new gear in defense of Obama, only limited now because his competition for now is another Dem.

While Obama would benefit from closed ranks, black folks will not be there if it is Hillary. Certain doom for her.

Yes, we’re very much on the same page. It’s a sad reality. My only hope is that McCain proves himself to be different enough. We need him to grovel a little.

patrick neid on April 14, 2008 at 2:19 PM

But again, if Obama is the weaker candidate, why is he winning and pulling in so much money?

If Hillary wins, it’ll feel to many that she stole the election. Already a large percentage of Hillary and Obama supporters have said they wouldn’t vote for the other Democrat. This is win-win.

Were it not for Hillary still being in the election it’s possible we would have never heard Wright’s statements. They seemed to only publish that in reaction to SNL’s clip about how Hillary’s being treated in the media compared to how Obama’s being treated.

And besides, all the reasons you list as reasons while Hillary will win the White House still apply to Obama. He has the same advantages she would have.

I don’t understand your point.

Esthier on April 14, 2008 at 2:40 PM

That was a misleading headline. It wasn’t a “twenty-point stumble.” It should have read “Stumbles to 20-point Gap in PA.”

Officer Barbrady, I would like file a claim of Shennanigans.
