Newt Gingrich: Obama just doesn’t get Americans

Now that Barack Obama has issued the requisite non-apology apology in the usual form — he “deeply regrets” that he offended people not with his sentiments but with his sentence structure — the media will likely let Obama off the hook. Not Newt Gingrich, who makes a rare foray into the presidential campaign from the bleacher seats with a searing analysis that hits a bullseye, and one obvious to anyone who hasn’t just focused on the word “bitter”:
If you go to the most expensive private school in Hawaii and then move on to Columbia University and Harvard Law School, you may not understand normal Americans. Their beliefs are so alien to your leftwing viewpoint that you have to seek some psychological explanation for what seem to be weird ideas.
They can’t really believe in the right to bear arms.
They can’t really believe in traditional marriage.
They can’t really believe in their faith in God.
They can’t really want to enforce the law on immigration.
Therefore, they must be “bitter” and “frustrated.”
This is the closest Senator Obama has come to openly sharing his wife’s view that “America is a mean country”. Not since Governor Dukakis have we seen anyone so out of touch with normal Americans. It makes perfect sense that it was in a fundraiser in San Francisco that he would have shared the views he has so carefully kept hidden for the entire campaign.
This distills the Obama viewpoint about middle America to its essence. He assumes that gun ownership, religious faith, and a desire to enforce border security grows out of a mental defect or simple petulance. He cannot understand any of it as deeply held values or beliefs because they are all so foreign to him. His cure is a huge, whopping dose of government intervention to replace all of it. That’s the hubris, the condescension, and the elitism rolled up into a precise point.
The one sentence wasn’t the only point that offends here. Ben Smith at Politico has a video clip of a portion of this appearance. Ask yourself this: isn’t Obama implying that middle America is, well, racist in this quote? Emphases mine:
Here’s how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long, and they feel so betrayed by government, and when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn’t buy it. And when it’s delivered by — it’s true that when it’s delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama (laugher), then that adds another layer of skepticism.
Update: Rick Moran discusses Obama’s Allentown Syndrome, and why it’s a mirage.

I’m all for Marxist-Leninist, gun-controlling, pandering, un-credentialed, two-bit politicians, butthis black thing is the deal breaker. Thanks Obama for crystalizing my issues with you. Here I thought I had it all figured out. Gotta go back to watching my wrastling and shootin’ at the neighbor’s dog.

By the way, this could explain Obama’s affection with his church. If his church was more about politics than a belief in what Jesus taught.
bnelson44 on April 12, 2008 at 7:25 PM
I don’t think he’ll ever ‘get it’, but I don’t think it will matter to the media because they don’t ‘get it’ either. Our RIGHTS are not to be infringed upon by the government. The Bill of Rights restricts the government. Liberals think that the government gives you rights. The constitution clearly states that the government is not allowed to take rights given by God.

Bottom line: Obama believes that religion is the opiate of the masses.

Can Maverick simply keep his head down and not say anything stupid to win this thing? The more people actually listen to the pompous Mr. Obama, the more they wonder, “Is this really who the Dems are choosing to lead this country?”

Why isn’t anyone talking about Newt for VP? He would be AWESOME.
As always, he nails the point. Newt’s intellect could run rings around every other politician out there.
bigred on April 12, 2008 at 7:40 PM
Well, hallelujah, Newt got it right. Obama, despite his potestations of being “abandoned” by his father, did not come from a typical “working class” background. He knows nothing of American middle-class or small-town existence, nor of those who don’t rely on government handouts for their existence.
He is, in short, a fraud, or as Allah so aptly describes him, “a condescending, crypto-Marxist, elitist liberal poseur.”
Nichevo on April 12, 2008 at 7:42 PM
Amen to that.
I don’t think I have ever seen someone as overtly racist (aside from David Duke) and socialist (aside from Chairman Mao) as this running for public office. Good lood. Are there really that many stupid people that are going to follow this false prophet? Wait a minute. We have government schools run by liberals. Nevermind.

If Barry squeaks by to win the nomination, he’ll be destroyed in the debates. The truly sick part of this entire episode is that this man and his supporters in money, time and organization truly, honestly believe this crap. They have no clue, but they do have the money and George Soro’s and Peter Lewis of Progressive Auto Insurance’s billions. And, their hatred of anything not within the realm of their realities. I say sick because it is a disease of the brain when it has been so brainwashed by academia, the MSM, parents and pastors that reality is not only an alien concept, but is not evan an achievable one at that. They cannot change, ever. We all need to send McCain $10-100. every month, maybe each week…whatever we can afford because the inmates have taken over the asylum and all hell is about to break out if these loonies win the office with the most power in the world!!!

JiangxiDad on April 12, 2008 at 7:54 PM
Implying? No, I think he is cleary stating that middle America is racist. And anyway, he is not BLACK. He is half black, half white. So is only half of him racist, purely by virtue of his one half whiteness? What a load of crap he spews. And not because he’s black, but just because it’s a load of crap.

It’s fascinating to me that a man whose pastor for the past 20 years, who married Obama and his wife, who baptized Obama’s kids, who built a fortune on the idea that God demands black Americans to be ignorant and militant…..
It’s fascinating to me that such a man would describe faith as the result of being “bitter.”

I don’t believe Obama thinks of himself as “half white.” In his book, Dreams from My Father, he writes of his rage and disgust with whites. He also writes that one of his heroes, Malcolm X, wrote that he wished he could expunge the part of himself that was white. Obama said that line really resonated with him. It’s easy to see why.

Looking at Ben Smith’s blog comments, the left is in a real frenzy on this. Of course they think Obama is right on, and that Ben Smith in a flak for Hillary.
The frame of a class analysis is so strong that they can’t conceive of another POV. Everything is class. Class members vote on the basis of what the government can provide in terms of jobs, welfare, education, homes, etc.
Anyone that doesn’t do that is just reactionary lumpenproletariat.
Obama thinks he is a sincere promiser of governmental goods and services, and he is being rejected, so he gets a little snide.
This is not going to be a pretty election.

It escapes most analysts that Obama can’t have it both ways. The above excerpt of his speech harps on “bitterness”, while claiming at once “premised on not being cynical about government”.
Either people are bitter, or they’re not. Can’t have the cake and eat it too.
This man is fuller of himself than Bill Clinton ever cold be. He’s surpassed the master of triangulation.

It’s hard to imagine how large a percentage of the population are socialists, but don’t even know that. Liberal control of academia and media for the past two generations has nearly destroyed us from within. I wonder if it is too late to recover. Will all those who believe in an independent life, as free of government interference as possible, simply die in a decade or two?

I hope you are right, but don’t think it will be that easy. The contrasts in age, speaking ability, and charisma will play a large part. This is the age of sound bites. Style over substance. The pundit post game analysis will also have influence.

Earlier today I posted at LGF that if someone had asked me a year ago if the democrats could nominate someone that I would despise more than the Clintons I would have laughed in their face. However, they have done just that. It amazes me how every four years that party can nominate someone who is so unpresidential to run for the presidency.
dawgyear on April 12, 2008 at 8:23 PM
Obama really isn’t an American, and I’m sure he doesn’t see himself as such. He thought he would chameleon himself into the political landscape and got busted. He thought he would play the descendant of slaves, and even tried the accent. In fact, he has done more to bring the discussion of Black racism to the forefront than any other wacky individual to date.
Hening on April 12, 2008 at 8:25 PM
So when Democrats/the Left disagree with government policies, they are dissenting — which is the highest form of patriotism. When Republicans/the Right disagree with a Democrat government policy, they’ll be divisive.
Democrats are allowed to be cynical about Republican governments, “a healthy skepticism”. But if Republicans do the same with a Democrat government, then that just won’t do. Will we all be forced into government reeducation schools in order to no longer be cynical about The Obamassiah’s socialism?

Entelechy on April 12, 2008 at 8:25 PM
Yes, I believe McCain will have a big win, if things continue along the same trajectory. However, I don’t think he will win because independents (or more conservative democrats) reject activist government, but because they reject these particular Dem. candidates for reasons of personality.

You leave out several important facts-namely that she was a Democrat, which no doubt hastened her job promotion in a state even bluer than Massachusetts. As a Hawaii resident myself from 1963 till 1966, I also wouldn’t be surprised if there was some reverse “affirmative action” involved-after all, she was a woman, but also white, in a state where whites are still the minority.
Likewise, Barry may not have grown up among “poverty” in Hawaii in the 1960s but the hate was there. Ask any white kid who lived in the islands in the 1960s if they remember an annual rite of passage in school called “Beat Up Haole Day”. We were beat to a pulp for the sole “crime” of the color of our skin (white).
Likewise, Barry’s exclusive Hawaii prep school, Punahou, had its problems when he was there. My uncle taught there for several years in the 1950s and even then they weren’t exactly paragons of virtue.

It is your thoughts and your ideas,, and other foolish libs like you that continue to cling to their old foolish notions about government and freedom.
It is the American idea of freedom, liberty, independence and individuality that is the revolutionary idea! It is the American,, simple, independent, rugged and free that has fed the world, freed the world, revolutionized the world, brought hope and freedom and liberation to untold millions. It is the American,, the simple American, armed with little more than a musket, Bible and a yearning for independence that was the most forward thinking man of his time,, and still is!
An American, man or woman, black or white, Christian or not,, an American with little to no education, title or money, but appreciates and understand the value of liberty, hard work and freedom and has a yearning to better himself and provide for his or her family,, has a love for his country and a general desire to help his fellow man,, is wiser and greater than a thousand Harvard graduates may ever be.
It is not simple hard working Americans that encourage rapists, kidnappers and murderers to ravage our nation. It is smart, liberal judges from Yale and Harvard!
It is not hard working Americans from rural communities that typically frolic with prostitutes or steal private property from those that get in their way! No,, again,, that would be smart liberals with degrees from expensive universities! The so called best and brightest among us!
Yes,, the so called best and brightest among us,, like yourself,, that think nations like Cuba and Venezuela are to be emulated. The so called best and brightest among us, people with expensive and high sounding degrees, that have inflicted more pain and suffering on more people that one can even begin to imagine.
