This is why rookies shouldn’t run for President

posted at 8:50 pm on April 11, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

When Barack Obama started his run for the presidency in January 2007, I called it the start of the Year of Nick the New Guy. I warned Democrats not to take the risk of placing their bets on a candidate that had not had to fight a national campaign against a real opponent. At 45, I wrote, Obama “has plenty of time to gain the experience and gravitas needed to lead the nation.” Today, as Allahpundit posted earlier, Obama proved me correct.

Only a rookie would make a colossal blunder like calling Midwestern, small-town voters a bunch of bigoted, overly religious gun nuts:

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there’s not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Rookies should not run for President. Rookies make mistakes that brand them, and once made on the national stage, those brands never entirely disappear. Ask Joe Biden, whose plagiarism 20 years ago still largely defines him outside of Delaware, and he was hardly a rookie at the time.

What makes this so breathtaking is the mindless, casual way in which Obama reveals his snobbishness and elitism. We saw hints of this from Michelle Obama, in her assertions about never being proud of her country until her husband ran for President. (Soren Dayton has more on this.) We had not seen it from Obama himself in such a blatant and unmistakable manner. The matter-of-fact style in which he spoke this shows the unthinking contempt he has for people he has never engaged — an acceptance of stereotypes without questioning them that shows his own bigotry, not to mention foolishness and poor judgment.

At times, we have remarked that Obama only really performs well with a script. Once he has to speak extemporaneously, not only does he fare worse as an orator, but he tends to get lost and make unforced errors. It’s hard to imagine one worse than this. It’s all the worse because it’s not a gaffe in the normal sense, but a revealing moment that shows how Obama really views Americans. With this statement, it’s not hard to understand why he sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for 20 years and heard nothing that moved him to dissent.

Power Line asks whether this will end Obama’s candidacy in 2008. Not in the primaries, as the only other option is simply not electable. It’s likely the end of any hope for the candidate of Hope and Change in a general election that depends on heartland voters. This clip will get played over and over again, in blogs, television show, and radio broadcasts not just until November but for years and years. It may not end Obama’s presidential hopes just for this year, but ever.

That’s the risk of running for the highest office without garnering the necessary experience beforehand. Unfortunately for the Democrats, they had already put most of their eggs in his basket before he got properly vetted. No matter what they do now, they’ve handicapped themselves heavily for the November election.

Keep checking back on AP’s post for updates to the story.

Update: Jules Crittenden has a great round-up as well.

You couldn’t have said it better, Cap’n Ed!

Barack Obama seriously harmed himself here. He has just confirmed the prejudices of many living in the major cities who have seldom been in “fly-over” country. The disconnect is open and raw, and Middle America will take notice.

I just asked my husband, who was driving all the way home from Houston today, if he heard about it on the radio. Oh, yes, he did. His reaction: “What a son of a gun!”

(Psst: He was a merchant marine, so you can guarantee that a few creative cuss words came out…)

TheBigOldDog on April 11, 2008 at 9:04 PM

The problem is that his core constituency of college kids, Bush haters, and those who want “change” above all else will either rationalize this away or applaud him for “telling it like it is.” I guess it all depends on whether or not they can bury this gaffe and the others that are sure to come faster than we can point them out. Seeing as he has the media pretty squarely on his side, I think there is a decided chance of this. If not, though, he’s going to go down like McGovern. The man really is not ready for prime-time.

I think us bloggers still overestimate our power and underestimate the power of the MSM. There are people who are willing to believe that spending a few years as a young kid in Indonesia gives him more foreign affairs experience than McCain. Those people will gladly believe that the State Senator from Chicago can fix the fact that some cities eventually become not as affluent as they used to be, provided the peasants in those cities can let go of their belief in a God.

Barry O is simply a bigot, liar and con man.

He is uninformed but sure of his knowlege. He classifies some people as “typical” but would never accept that appellation of himself. If you don’t agree with him, you have some deficiency.

He cannot learn from socialism’s past that it is the future that doesn’t work, or he has learned too well that it is the path to power over people. Either way, he is a liar about his intentions for his time to play with all the toys.

He associates with bigots. Racial bigots, moneyed bigots who may not care about race but surely do see themselves as better than the “little people”. The kind of humanitarian progressives who think Fidel Castro, Robert Mugabe and Hugo Chavez are great leaders.

That he is a media darling and the Democrat front runner is an indictment of the media and the Democrat Party. Clearly both groups in general seem to favor vast reductions in freedom to tidy up how America functions. That so many people are going along with this farce is a celebration of rot and the success of educators to misinform and mold a dependent, incompetent and fearful society, one student at a time.

No wonder I drink.

1. Free Trade hypocrisy
2. Rich Liberals in San Francisco
3. Opiate of the masses.
4. Gun grabbing

“This clip will get played over and over again, in blogs, television show, and radio broadcasts not just until November but for years and years.”

Certainly on blogs such as this one the clip will run– throughout all 8 years of the Obama presidency.

Alas that it is so, but the Republican Party of 2008 is incapable of taking advantage of the lightweights the Democrats have been selecting from.

The amazing thing is that this isn’t the first gaffe from the rookie. Shoulder to shoulder with Rev. Wright, a wife that makes Theresa Heinz Kerry look like a school marm, not wanting his girls to be “punished” with a baby, and now this.
One wonders what he’ll say next. Will he get desperate, and let something really loathesome slip? If he says this, can he top it?

Pope Linus on April 11, 2008 at 9:15 PM

It’s likely the end of any hope for the candidate of Hope and Change in a general election that depends on heartland voters.

He won most small and red states. Those are most of the ones he won’t win in November, and the liberals know this. That’s one of the cards Hillary is trying to play.

It’s so incredibly sweet, molasses indeed, that he said it at the billionaire row gathering in San Francisco. The irony is thick, indeed. Hillary has no moral authority to criticize him on this. McCain just got a huge gift, free.

And that’s why this kills Obama. No one has ever been stupid enough to talk down to Northern/Midwest rednecks. Until now.

With all due respect to Ed Koch, one could vaguely compare Obama’s error with something that Koch once did — While NYC mayor, Koch made some disparaging remark about upstate New York. Later (while still mayor) he was running in the Democrat gubernatorial primary against Mario Cuomo, and those old remarks were publicized. Koch lost his lead over Cuomo, and Cuomo went on to win the primary and the election. Koch never again ran for higher office.

What cracks me up here is that Obama is playing into Operation Chaos so well, it’s as if he wants Hillary to stay in the race all the way to Denver. Talk about the total exposure of an Elitist Liberal Attitude towards anybody that doesn’t share the same mindset; wow! It’s no wonder these people choose to live in a bubble, they have such disdain for anything/anybody outside of their own personal misery. What an absolute brain dead way of life; no wonder why these people live for the quick fix, and are so inflicted with extreme self-centeredness.

If the MSM was doing their job with vetting Obama on behalf of the country, the brain dead Liberals wouldn’t be in this nightmare situation. By protecting Obama at every turn & refusing to ask the proper questions, the media allowed Obama enough time to rack up a lead large enough to assure doom for these creatures come Denver time.

Jeremiah Wright and his lukewarm support of Israel and his luke warm support for people that hate Israel, Wright, Farrakhan, “Palestinians” in Chicago did that didn’t they? Many a person I talked to that gave Obama the benefit of the doubt prior to Wright seemd to view Wright as a nice bow that tied up all the little doubts they had been having. His wifes comments, her thesis that bemoaned the fact that Black graduates of Princeton did have more of a Black identity, his liberal voting record. When Wright broke all those little anomolies made sense. They seemd to have a common thread in a man that would listen to Wright for 20 years.

Seeing him sit next to Ted Kennedy during SOTU address year before last really was prophetic. He is the African-American equivalent of Ted Kennedy. He can be a Senator for as long as he wants, he’ll NEVER be President. Whew! For a month or two I was worried. He was starting to make socialism sound sexy.

It reminds me of Bush’s 2000 rallies where Sting’s Brand New Day was always played. Sting was not happy either.

Indy Conservative,

You are neither conservative or independent.

‘perhaps that word doesn’t mean what you think it means…’

Micah on April 11, 2008 at 10:28 PM

Why?

Because I don’t like how Drudge operates?

I am what my nickname says it is.

I don’t think you know me more than myself.

Don’t count on one message I posted, read all what I’m posting before judging.

FTN!

bluestater on April 11, 2008 at 10:48 PM

He’s kinda like a ‘Fox News Alert,’ you wait eagerly for the alert and then some blonde shows up and tells you that Bush sneezed.

Indy Conservative on April 11, 2008 at 9:42 PM

LMAO perfect

I would like some Raisinettes and a super large Coke with my popcorn, please.

Thank you.

This is the verbal companion to Obama’s bowling fiasco.

If you ever see that guy interviewed or read a written interview you’ll see that 1)He believes exactly what barry is saying and he’s believed it for alot longer then barry has been around an 2) He is as dumb as a stump.

And my personal opinion is that his music has always sucked. He had a couple of annoying pop hits in the late 70′s early 80′s when there was very little good music on the radio.

peacenprosperity on April 11, 2008 at 11:16 PM

the funny thing is that the liberals still don’t understand how bad this really is. They really think this way so to them it is truth. they have no idea how this plays to the rest of america. the flyover country. with his linke to Unity church, his link to the Nation of Islam, his “typical white” comment about his grandmother, and now this he is setting himself up for a landslide. If only the Rep had a real strong canidate. So his ties to the Nation of Islam, Hamas kind of puts florida out of reach, now this puts PA and OH in play. while the South has voted for him heavyily I think his support among regular Americans (as opposed to those AMericans that hate america and everything it stands for for the last 200 odd years) will dry up in the South come Nov. It doesn’t look good. the only other thing he could do to cement his defeat is piss off the latinos.

unseen on April 11, 2008 at 11:19 PM

Just watch. Rush is going to hammer this one on Monday… and Sean… and Glenn… and Savage… and the local talk-radio guy…
newton on April 11, 2008 at 10:29 PM

Exactly… Rush will also illustrate exactly how the MSM (working together as one unit) covered this empty suits back once again with tightly spun rhetoric and talking points.

Keemo on April 11, 2008 at 11:23 PM

This clip will get played over and over again, in blogs, television show, and radio broadcasts not just until November but for years and years

IS there a clip? If there is just a text record of these words, the effect will only be 10% of a audio clip or video snippet…

pseudonominus on April 11, 2008 at 11:35 PM

unseen has it right. Many of those who would vote for Obama think that Obama was speaking the truth – and will be excoriated for it.

The “so-called” liberals who think that they are so openminded and full of “diversity” are really quite the opposite. They accept only those who think, dress, speak and act as they do.

Truly pathetic. All that the rest of us can hope is that this will harm Obama enough so that he will not be elected.

Of course – if McCain is our next president, the left will scream that racist righties did Obama in.

Expect it.

pbundy on April 11, 2008 at 11:39 PM

Well, fine enough, but in the end we have President McCain? There are no winners here, folks.

Dirthead on April 11, 2008 at 11:40 PM

So let me make sure that I have this straight.

So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

translates to -

a colossal blunder like calling Midwestern, small-town voters a bunch of bigoted, overly religious gun nuts

but

Make it a hundred!
We’ve been in South Korea … we’ve been in Japan for 60 years.

and

“I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al Qaeda.” [after Joe whispers in John's ear]

translates to something like what ?

John McCain once again demonstrates his deep and profound understanding of twentieth century history and his clear thinking expertise in his understanding of the Middle East and Islam. Clearly John McCain is the leader for our time.

???

Ladies and Germs it is time to wake up and Smell the Coffee.

Time to be on reality like White is on Rice
and a Bear is on Honey.

When it comes to Presidential candidates for 2008, any which way you look, America is so SCROOMED!!!

MB4 on April 11, 2008 at 11:43 PM

Yes! The only candidates who should run for office are those that are already deep within the political system!

Nonfactor on April 11, 2008 at 11:45 PM

Is this his political Obamituary? McGovern 2008!
