So it’s a mischaracterization (even though there is audio of him saying exactly that), but even if that was somehow what he meant to say, it’s a factually accurate thing to say.

The media agrees that poverty is the root cause of terrorism (it’s not) why would this be different. Of course, the root cause of your gun toting, bigoted, bible thumping, gun toting lifestyle is your inability to find a job. I stroke my rifle cuz jesus tells me too.
lorien1973 on April 11, 2008 at 10:26 PM
I noticed Crazy Uncle Cafferty and standard issue uptight PBS/NPR liberal lady nodding in agreement as Toobin spoke. Thats exactly the crowd Obama was speaking to at the time of his remarks. Its also the crowd Obama is very much a part of. Thats why he said, why he felt comfortable saying it, and why none of them get it.
D0WNT0WN on April 11, 2008 at 10:26 PM
CNN is a typical liberal TV News station.

When the favorite candidate of the liberal press stumbles, they get frustrated. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to word manipulation or tendentious reporting to explain their frustrations.

“As a member of the liberal elite, I can say emphatically and unequivocally that my fellow member of the liberal elite was speaking the truth: small-town America IS xenophobic, turns to crazy religion because they’re so hopeless, and clings to their guns like they were pacifiers. Let’s move on to the real issues, people.”

I had the feeling in the beginning of Operation Chaos that it would not make a difference. The more that Barry-O shows his face, the more feasible it is that this may work.
At this point, I believe that either one of them are stuck in the mud. Then again, I will go back to the NEA argument that enough of our society has been dumbed down enough to believe these tools.
I will believe and pray….

Toobin has what many I’ve seen have regarding Obama.
- “He hasn’t been tainted like all other politicians”
That scares me because if Tool Toobin can look past this gaffe and ordinary Americans can do also, then I hate to imagine what could be.
McCain hasn’t distinguished himself either,
But it’s still way too early in the cycle to tell how this will all pan out.
While the dems are eating themselves to get to the prize, I can take satisfaction watching them lose.
Kini on April 12, 2008 at 1:06 AM
Toobin: Of course Marx was right about dialectical materialsim. Any self-respecting elitest knows that this goes without saying. Your average ignorant proletarian doesn’t know what motivates him, he’s just being swept along by the currents of history. Move along, nothing to see here.
Can we get to the real issues, please, like universal health care and those outrageous tax cuts for the eeevil rich?

Entelechy on April 12, 2008 at 2:29 AM
O-M-G! I can’t believe that guy just said it was ‘factually accurate’. . . WHOSE FACTS?!
I guess the media really do think that Americans are stupid. After all they’ve been fed that this is the great leader they’ve been propping up without question all this time. Matthews gets a feeling up his leg for goodness sakes. . . how can that NOT be the sign that Obama is the one?!
It’s pretty unbelievable how out of touch he is. But it looks good for KP keeping her job. Hillary is going to eat Obama’s lunch. . . and then lose to McCain.

Buford on April 12, 2008 at 5:44 AM
Isn’t it interesting that he focussed on the “lashing out at others”, ie racism. At least he acknowledged that that was the take away.
Hillary’s comment didn’t really suggest that looking down was more than their interest in gun rights and religion. Clearly she wouldn’t because that race thing is the third rail.
But Obama brought religion into it. A “priority” he claims to share. Unless he is talking in San Fransisco, of course.
Agrippa2k on April 12, 2008 at 6:02 AM
The Dems thought (and still do) that this was a shoe-in election year. Each of these candidates believes the presidency is theirs for the taking, if they can just get past this pesky nomination thing. This arrogant assumption is what is bringing out the knives between them.
And another thing–I want to know who is ordaining these bigoted black “reverends”? Jackson, Sharpton, Wright, et al.
