Jimmy Carter to meet with … Hamas?

The left’s senior statesman, sitting down for a photo op with this degenerate in the heat of an election? After having only just recently quasi-endorsed a guy who, thanks to his associates, is already suspect on Israel? It’s too good to be true. Memo to JC: As an icebreaker, ask him how many Jews really died in the Holocaust.
Gingrich once compared Bush to Carter in how completely each managed to lose the public’s confidence. Another similarity: Each is willing to follow his principles with an almost total disregard for the political consequences.
Former President Jimmy Carter is reportedly preparing an unprecedented meeting with the leader of Hamas, an organization that the U.S. government considers one of the leading terrorist threats in the world.
The Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat reported Tuesday that Carter was planning a trip to Syria for mid-April, during which he would meet with Khaled Meshal, the exiled head of the Palestinian terror group Hamas, on April 18.
Deanna Congileo, Carter’s press secretary, confirmed in an e-mail to FOXNews.com that Carter will be in the Mideast in April. Pressed for comment, Congileo did not deny that the former president is considering visiting Meshal.
“President Carter is planning a trip to the Mideast next week; however, we are still confirming details of the trip and will issue a press release by the end of this week,” wrote Congileo. “I cannot confirm any specific meetings at this point in time.”
Follow the link for reaction from John Bolton and CAIR tool Ibrahim Hooper, who’s naturally pleased as can be. How beyond the pale is Hamas? According to his now former foreign policy honcho, Samantha Power, even Obama won’t talk to them — ostensibly because as president he’ll only deign to meet with heads of state, which in the Palestinian case would mean Abbas, but in point of fact because even he can’t work enough messianic mojo to make a summit with Khaled Meshaal go down smoothly with the public. Exit question: Which prominent Democrat will be tasked tomorrow with phoning Jimbo to explain why it’s not a good idea for someone who thinks Israel is an apartheid state to be huddling with terrorists in an election year? Will it be Obama himself? Or the left’s other secular Jesus?
Update: Patrick Ishmael e-mails to reminds us this was a long time coming.
The 39th U.S. president said he met with Hamas leaders in Ramallah, in the West Bank, after last week’s elections.
“They told me they want to have a peaceful administration. They want to have a unity government, bring in Fatah members and independent members,” Carter said. But he added that “what they say and what they do is two different matters.”

See doubleplusundead on April 9, 2008 at 1:49 AM for my 1st response, and secondly, if Carter is ever charged, arrested, and convicted of treason, then perhaps we could/should string him up, but 1) I don’t see that happening in the few years he has left, and 2) making wild judgements against a former president no matter how bad that president was/is, as if you are the sole judge and jury, is a bit silly in my opinion, and is precisely, as doubleplusundead states, like the leftists who are so convinced that they are right that anything that disagrees with their opinion becomes worthy of death. I think you have valid points, but I can’t go with you on calling for the head of an uncharged, never convicted former president. Let him spew his nonsense and wait him out. I’m guessing he will be silent before you will.

Why Hamas?
A man of his supreme diplomatic talents would be far better employed negotiating with the Taleban. This whole jihad thing is just a little cultural misunderstanding. And if we reach out and embrace the headchoppers and suicide bombers all will be right with the world.

Plus, whatever Jewish vote BHO had will collapse.
It’s a win-win for McCain. Can Rev. Wright join Carter on the trip to complete the trifecta?

Any normal American would rightly be imprisoned. But when it’s a leftist [words fail], the government rolls over. Nancy Pelosi aids and abets Syrian terrorists, Carter aids and abets Palestinian terrorists, and Bush does nothing.
Just because you’re an ex-president, you don’t have the right to do anything you want. Yes, that includes treason.

We will have to hibernate to escape a weeks worth of lies about his legacy.
peacenprosperity on April 9, 2008 at 7:42 AM
Carter’s shock value and power derived from seeing a former US President associating with our adversaries worldwide, and the implicit support of the American people such actions showed.
But he’s practically useless now, even to our enemies, as he and Clinton demeaned the office, and plenty of Americans disavow his actions. I don’t think it matters much what he says or does. His legacy is sad, almost a tragedy, and verging on pathetic. How could a living American President become unimportant? It’s staggering.

There are several historical reasons for this, even if none of them make sense anymore. Here’s the most important one, IMHO. Most American Jews sought to assimilate as completely as possible into American culture. Their ties with the old country were completely cut. In order to assimilate, they largely dropped their religious observation so that they would appear less different in Christian America. The Democrat party was perceived as the place a non-christian or non-religious person would be more welcome.
There are other reasons for sure, like affection for idealistic political systems that exist better in books, but this figures prominently. There was, and still probably is, a fear/suspicion of Christians. But things are changing. The generation of Jews with these issues figuring prominently will be gone soon. There’s a resurgence of religious identity among younger Jews who are secure in their American identity, and a greater affiliation with Republican and conservative causes.
JiangxiDad on April 9, 2008 at 8:20 AM
For those of you wishing death would come for Jimmy Carter.
For all practical purposes, Carter is politically dead. The DNC wishes this loser would go to his room, stay drunk, and never show his face in public again. Both Obama and Clinton wish much worse for this loser, esp. Obama following the Carter “kiss of death” endorsement. The only people that don’t hold such disdain for this loser are the MSM far left whacko’s, who to this day have no clue as to the fact that they are standing in quicksand.
Make no mistake about it folks, Jimmy Carter was the worst President to ever reside in the White House; an embarrassment to the Democrat Party; an embarrassment of historical proportions to America; the man who gave hope to the enemies of Freedom simply due to the fact that such a weak minded POS would/could be elected by a free people sent a strong message to those who wish death for all Americans.

You what’s great about Carter? he doesn’t give a f*ck what idiots like some in this thread think of him.
He’s working to better the world. He’s taken part in more courageous acts and done more for the good of people around the world than any of the small, dim minds calling for his death.
You may very well have a different philosophy on how to deal with organizations like Hamas or governments like the one in Sudan, but his actions have in no way constituted treason. He seeks to engage and change those who take part in horrific acts. I think part of his philosophy is that if you engage people, bring the “into the civilized world” that they’ll abandon voilent means to their end.
Ironically, it’s the same philosophy that the US is currently trying Iraq.

peacenprosperity on April 9, 2008 at 9:07 AM
I am trying really hard to think about anything ‘courageous’ or even vaguely useful that Carter has done.
Hamas have a charter that calls for the destruction of Israel. They have never hinted that they would drop that aim. Negotiating with someone who refuses to compromise is not negotiation, it is not ‘courageous’, it is folly bordering on abject insanity.
that said I do agree that Carter’s behavior is not treasonous and calls for his death are abhorrent and really have no place here IMO.
Ares on April 9, 2008 at 9:08 AM
It seems to be a Democrat Party thing to insult the American people by meeting with our enemies without Government sanction. Kerry met with the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong while still serving as a Naval Reserve Officer. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, meets with Haffez al-Assad and Congresscritter Jim McDermott meets with Saddam Hussein. Fortunately, Barry Obama and Herself! have kept their anti-American positions in the closet.
But then thinking Americans already know the Lib/Prog/Socialist/Democrat Party is firmly on the side of our enemies.

Carter wrote in his book that Hamas should stop suicide attacks on Israeli civilians “When Israel returns to the 1967 borders”. Carter and Mashaal of Hamas therefore share the same views of suicide bombings. Carter sees suicide bombers and their handlers as legitimate figures and Carter has romanticized suicide bombers. Let him go meet with Hamas. It might just make even his last defenders at the New York Times a little less loving of Carter.

“I wonder what he wants to discuss with Hamas? Common interests?”
It is sad that such a bitter old crank was once our President.
BD57 on April 9, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Just to clarify, I don’t wish death on Carter. He is 83, so I’m expecting it to simply happen due to his old age. However, I will be glad when it comes, because as I said earlier, he’s showing friendship and alliance to people who would, without a moment’s hesitation, kill any or all of us. He’s cozying up to the people whose ilk took his citizens hostage, and defending their doing so. He’s standing shoulder to shoulder with those who want to see America fall, and I really do think a large part of that is simply due to his bitterness that the hostages were released the moment he left office. This ought to be covered under the Logan act, but sadly, I don’t think the writers of that bill ever considered a president would stoop to this.
Jimmy Carter is hubris personified, and his time spent building a few projects doesn’t even begin to make up for the damage he did to this nation. Every president makes bad decisions, but Jimmy Carter is the only one who has gone on to make things even worse by continuing to represent our nation through his weak, pandering sycophantic mewing to terrorists.

Jimmy Carter’s failing peanut business was bailed out by Saudi oilmen in the 1970s. In 1981, Carter found himself in financially disastrous circumstances. So the Saudi oilmen bailed him out again. The Carter Center is fueled with Saudi money. But in addition to Carter’s financial debt to the Saudis, Carter’s allies in his political career also cashed in on their Saudi ties. Former South Carolina Governor John West was Carter’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia. West became a Saudi mouthpiece after his sinecure in Saudi Arabia finally ended. Beyond his selfish reasons for being a mouthpiece for Arab causes, Carter has psychological reasons for being an Arab sycophant. Carter never accepted his drubbing in 1980 by Ronald Reagan. Today Carter still seethes at this loss. It eats away at his very existence. That is why, over twentyfive years after the loss, Carter can still send nasty mail to George F. Will blaming Will for the Carter loss. Carter, in his warped mind, also blames Israel and Jewish Americans for the loss. On Larry King recently, Carter smiled that sick demented smile of his and talked angrily about “Supporters of Israel”. Carter was a slighly softer version of Reverend Wright.
