Even better: Mandela, Annan may join Carter for meeting with Hamas
posted at 6:51 pm on April 9, 2008 by Allahpundit
Speculate away: Whose idea was it to bring them on board? Their own? Carter’s and/or the Democrats’, seeking to use them as human shields from criticism in much the same way that Pelosi was planning to exploit Tom Lantos’s Holocaust experience for her proposed trip to Iran? Or is this an official production of The Elders? How cynical I was in hindsight to have described them last year as a “repository of Absolute Moral Authority, whose periodic diktats will be received warmly by the left not necessarily for their wisdom but as a benediction for whatever cause it is they’re weighing in on.” I only hope they invite fellow Elder Mary Robinson along, as her credentials from having presided over the anti-Israel lollapalooza that was the Durban Conference are impeccable.
The Al Jazeera report makes a basic point I omitted in the Carter post last night, that talking to Hamas isn’t necessarily a costless endeavor: If you think, as local Arab leaders do, that it’s important to bolster Abbas’s leadership if only because his Islamist tendencies are less pronounced than Hamas’s, then this meeting is entirely counterproductive. Look for the quote from Colin Powell too, whose own invitation to join the Elders must surely be in the mail. Exit question: Does the man responsible for ending apartheid in South Africa really want to make nice with a group whose founding document makes destroying another country an element of its preamble? Follow the link if you’ve never read the Hamas charter and pick through it. It’s the jihadi articles (11, 13, 15) that get most of the attention but don’t overlook Articles 22 and 28, where the Nazi rhetoric really comes into full flower. Click the image to watch.

Any comment by the Republican presidential nominee? Or is he staying above the fray, again.

Hmmm, the failure of the US presidency, the failure of the UN, and the failure of South Africa, all going to cozy up with murderous psychopathic scum.
How quaint.

I wonder if, as a sign of respect and solidarity, they’ll all wear kaffiyehs.

If you go to The Elders’ site, you won’t find any Jews. Just a coincidence I’m sure, but when it’s pointed out to them, I’m sure they’ll reserve a chair for Chomsky or some other kapo.

So Jimmy Carter, a Communist and a Bureaucrat walk into a bar…
I’m sure I could go somewhere with that, but I got nothing…

My personal name for them is the Transnational Old Farts Israel-Haters Club.
They won’t have Chomsky, rokemronnie. The one thing they all have in common is their utter distaste for Jews, even the “good” ones.

AP, you mentioned Mary Robinson. If you check their press release, you’ll see that she’s part of the entourage as well.

Somehow I’m skeptical that they’ll drop in to hear the perspectives of Jews living in Hebron, Kiryat Arba or anywhere in a settlement. To people like Tutu, Robinson, Annan and Carter, those kinds of Jews are untouchable.
rokemronnie on April 9, 2008 at 7:17 PM
Carter had his chance in the Middle East and along with the rest of his failed presidency he blew it big time. With any luck they’ll offer him a deal he can’t refuse and he’ll take up permanent residence in Syria . . . and good riddance.
rplat on April 9, 2008 at 7:19 PM
Riposte,
I noticed the omission of the Dalai Lama as well and sent a media query to their PR flacks. My guess is that all those leftards don’t want to rock the boat with China over Tibet.
What’s interesting about Tibet is how the same folks who savage Israel for the “occupation” and “ethnic cleansing” of Palestine are generally silent about Tibet or even repeat the ChiComs talking points. Comparing the Tibetans to the Palestinians, in terms of the age of their culture and existence as a national group, is like comparing Shakespeare to Dr. Seuss (with apologies to Ted Gesell).

Have the GPS coordinates of the meeting been given out, yet? Because, you know, IDF Radio would like to ensure their “Reporter”, the Hebrew Hammer, has satellitie linkup when he ‘interviews’ the four of them…

I’ll take a crack at it…
So Jimmy Carter, a Communist and a Bureaucrat walk into a bar in Harare, Zimbabwe. The bartender says, “Id love to get you guys a drink, but with the runaway inflation, I don’t know what to charge.”
The Bureaucrat says, “We’ll need to study this. I’ll need 10 billion dollars. We’ll set up a Department of Inflation and hire hundreds of people to produce reports on the subject.”
The Communist says, “No, No, we’ll outlaw private property, thereby eliminating any incentive to produce. By putting an end to economic growth, the inflation will stop. Then we will have a paradise for workers like you.”
Jimmy Carter says, “Lookout for the rabbit!!!!”

Why is it too much to ask for President Bush and John McCain to comment on this?

Has Carter not had the chance to invite his good friend Robert Mugabe yet? Or is Bob a little indisposed at this time?

It’s sooooooo tempting: Give Mandella the wrong date for the meeting, then one well-placed smart bomb, could solve so many problems…

Well, technically, if Jimmy Carter got Presidential approval before putatively negotiating on behalf of the US government, that wouldn’t constitute treason.
The other Democrats would never talk to him again.

I expect nothing less from the man that ended apartheid in South Africa. He was one of the leaders of a terroris orginazation. What did you expect ? The rest of the world and even the whoiets in S.A. look at him as a Saint and forget where his roots are. The ANC will always be in debt of the comunist world as well as the mid-east and world wide (say Cuba) terrorist organiztions. Why do you think the current regime is defendeing Mugabe andf his thugs to the bitter end ?

Not to stir the hornet’s next here, and correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Nelson Mandela’s previous career terrorism? Notwithstanding the fact that the Soviet-bankrolled and sponsored ANC’s illicit violence was occasionally directed at less than admirable figures in an avowedly undemocratic government-when it wasn’t being used to kill political opponents, Zulus, etc.-it was still not so far from the terrorist norm that it couldn’t be appreciated, in retrospect, by someone like Hamas’s Mr. Big.
