It seems pretty clear to me that Kim got his ass handed to him by the Chinese after the underground tests. Within a few days he was on a surprise trip to China, and subsequently no more detonations.

China is no more interested in a nuclear-armed North Korea than we are, may be less so.

China has other problems with the DPRK, including starving people sneaking across the border to find work and the kleptocratic mentality of the DPRK which, at one point, claimed that the trains on which the PRC shipped food aid in were part of the gift, and could be kept.

I agree with the point: we won’t understand this until we learn what part China may have played, and what they get out of it, either from the DPRK or from the USA. And what leverage they may have used to get it.

So are they finally going to admit they were helping Syria develop WMD? Also, sounds like a normalization or relations is on the table. I’m sure massive food, fertilizer and energy aid as well.
