Coming soon: Huckabee touts mystery announcement; Update: “New political entity”?

posted at 2:30 pm on April 9, 2008 by Allahpundit

Prime fodder for a slow news day. The countdown clock points to April 15, which means smart money is on something having to do with the Fair Tax, but NBC notes that he’s giving a speech that night at Cornell on religion. Any guesses? I’m thinking a remake of “Voyagers” with Chuck Norris as Phineas and Huck in the Meeno Peluce role. Or, just possibly, the unveiling of a new PAC.

Exit question: Is he really going to make taxes the cornerstone of Huckabee 2.0? It’s red meat, but at this moment in time just sort of … random.

Update: Headlines comments imported!

Update: His daughter told NBC that the countdown had to do with a website redesign. It’s a little more ambitious than that:

Mike Huckabee will hold a conference call with supporters tomorrow night to discuss his plans for a new political entity and to assure them that he plans to keep an active presence in this campaign and in future cycles, according to an aide.

He’ll be joined on the call by Steve Strang, a Christian publisher and Huckabee backer whose magazine, “Charisma,” just ran a very flattering cover piece on the former candidate that touts his future prospects.

“You will hear insider information about Huckabee’s scrappy campaign that surprised the nation and stunned Republican Party elites,” promises Strang in an email to Huckabee backers. “The ‘preacher who dared to be president’ will also discuss his plans for the future and reflect on the changing state of the conservative movement.”

Actually, I still think he’s just launching a new site and a PAC.

Here’s MSNBC: What’s Mike Huckabee up to?

I hope it is a reality TV show.

Seriously though, that looks like McCain’s logo underneath the countdown. Huck will probably be put in charge of that “committee of 50″ or whatever.

Is Huckabee putting his ascendancy into heaven on YouTube?

NoDonkey on April 9, 2008 at 2:40 PM

That would pretty funny if he doesn’t really have any announcement except for a new website design or something little.

Huckabee’s daughter, Sarah, reiterated that the former Arkansas governor is not running for anything this year — the filing deadline to run for Senate in his home state has passed — and said the countdown is for the launch of Huckabee’s new Web site.

From Huck’s Army forum.

April 15th a very interesting and busy day………noticed that former Presidential hopeful Alan Keys is having a press conference as well……… On Tuesday evening, April 15, in Hazleton, PA, Alan Keyes will be holding a major press conference to lay out his principled reasons for leaving the party he has belonged to and supported his entire adult life, including the years he served so ably in the Reagan administration…..Read Mr Keyes’ comments on Mike Huckabee and this man sounds like he just parrots what others say (falsely) about Mike Huckabee and doesn’t do any real research………But both of these men making comments on April 15th is interesting……

Maybe, maybe not. That is a subjective value judgment that can neither be confirmed nor denied.

But, one thing is for certain: I thought conservative not only supported, but advocated, divesrity of ideas in the public arena. So why are some many self-proclaimed conservatives suggesting that “[h]e needs to go away and stay away?”

EJDolbow on April 9, 2008 at 2:55 PM

I don’t like Huckabee, at all. But he had every right to run.
The entire field was weak, for one reason or another. Same could be said of the Dem’s. So there was room created for the next caretaker President, McCain. When the population changes, one way or another, the political results will change.

JiangxiDad on April 9, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Maybe, maybe not. That is a subjective value judgment that can neither be confirmed nor denied

medguy on April 9, 2008 at 2:57 PM

Oh, it can indeed be confirmed – Huckabee gave us McCain and that has already and will continue to damage the Republican party (unless McCain loses, then we might recover).

The reason he needs to go away is because he is attaching himself like a sucker to this party.

If he wants to split and start the Party of Pastors, that would be great.

EJDolbow on April 9, 2008 at 3:03 PM

It simply is ridiculous to blame Huckabee for causing the emergence of a nominee that you happen not to like. Huckabee earned the votes that he got, and he did so as fairly as any other candidate. That your preferred candidate could not win, if it is any one person’s fault, can only be the candidate’s own.

Again, diversity of ideas, though a bedrock principle of Conservatism, seems only to be supported by many conservatives so long as those ideas (or candidates) they happen not to like are not successful among the greater public.

medguy on April 9, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Any guesses? I’m thinking a remake of “Voyagers” with Chuck Norris as Phineas and Huck in the Meeno Peluce role.

Man, that’s the most obscure pop culture reference this site has ever seen. But keeping with the theme of that program, what if the announcement is that Huckabee has invented a time machine? He could go back to August 1969, break Tom Seaver’s arm and BAM, the Cubs win the pennant!

upinak on April 9, 2008 at 3:15 PM

EJDolbow on April 9, 2008 at 3:05 PM
He has not been soundly rejected. In fact an objective observer (whether he loved or hated Huckabee) would have to concede that he ran a fairly successful campaign. I mean, part of the evidence of that fact is the contempt that this website keeps throwing his way any chance it gets (viz. this very thread). Riddle me this: When was the last Duncan Hunter, Sam Brownback, or Tommy Thompson thread?

medguy on April 9, 2008 at 3:19 PM

I guess he is turning Muslim…he is having an operation, Michelle Huckabee please…he is giving all the money he raised to charity…he is starting a church where he will not accept tithing…he alone is going to slay the evil one–McCain…he is changing is last name to McAble, so he can run on the ticket McCain and McAble…he is announcing a new hip hop record…he is going to be on “Dancing with the Stars”…”Wright is a bro, leave him alone”…he is supporting Obama, the only other Christian(?) running…he is going to take some geography and economic classes for next election…or maybe it is just plain “thanks for the money suckers…”

right2bright on April 9, 2008 at 3:28 PM

He’s informally announcing the start of the “Huckabee 2012″ presidential campaign. It won’t be in so many words, but he’s looking to get out in front as the Official Republican Party Spokesperson/Leader of the evengelical and/or flat tax supporting wing of the party, so he’ll have a base to raise funds with and then to run on in the next election cycle.

jon1979 on April 9, 2008 at 3:30 PM

But, one thing is for certain: I thought conservative not only supported, but advocated, divesrity of ideas in the public arena. So why are some many self-proclaimed conservatives suggesting that “[h]e needs to go away and stay away?”

medguy

Because his “ideas” have been put to task, and have been found to be utterly lacking of anything resembling intelligence.

Granted, I’m a self-proclaimed Conservative who believes in the Arena of Ideas. But the idea of an arena implies that there will be winners and losers.

jrl on April 9, 2008 at 3:31 PM

…Tommy Thompson thread?

medguy on April 9, 2008 at 3:19 PM

Or even Fred Thompson…

right2bright on April 9, 2008 at 3:32 PM

Because his “ideas” have been put to task, and have been found to be utterly lacking of anything resembling intelligence.
I don’t think this is a fair analysis. Does the fact that Mitt Romney did not secure the nomination, for example, mean that his ideas have been “put to task” and have been found to be “utterly lacking of anything resembling intelligence?” If so, why are so many floating his name for VP and for 2012? This, however, is not even my point.

Granted, I’m a self-proclaimed Conservative who believes in the Arena of Ideas. But the idea of an arena implies that there will be winners and losers.
The idea of an arena, though implying winners and losers, does not imply that upon losing one is no longer allowed in the arena. Ronald Reagan comes to mind here.

medguy on April 9, 2008 at 3:38 PM

Again, diversity of ideas, though a bedrock principle of Conservatism, seems only to be supported by many conservatives so long as those ideas (or candidates) they happen not to like are not successful among the greater public.

medguy on April 9, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Obviously you don’t get it…we listen to ideas, it doesn’t mean we accept all ideas…get it?
If an idea is wrong, you want conservatives to embrace it because it is different or “diverse”. We allow ideas to be presented, unlike the liberals, and then we make a decision to accept or discard. We listened to Huck, and now we want to discard him, he is worthless (his ideas).
So, if some guy wants to set up a monument to worship the God of Uranus…you see that as a diverse idea, a new way of using state money, so you accept it because you embrace diversity…ok, the line for you starts on the far left.
I say he is nuts, and you would call me closed minded…ok, don’t be a conservative, you have to make choices and you are not up to it.

right2bright on April 9, 2008 at 3:40 PM

I’m thinking a remake of “Voyagers”

What an obscure reference.

BohicaTwentyTwo on April 9, 2008 at 3:42 PM

He’s doing what Edwards, and McCain did. Establishing a PAC so he can pull in dollars to keep his campaign staff on payroll till he can run again. Ugh!

a capella on April 9, 2008 at 3:45 PM

I don’t think this is a fair analysis. Does the fact that Mitt Romney did not secure the nomination, for example, mean that his ideas have been “put to task” and have been found to be “utterly lacking of anything resembling intelligence?” If so, why are so many floating his name for VP and for 2012?

medguy on April 9, 2008 at 3:38 PM

Yes, Mitts ideas and standards were lacking (although not his money). VP, because that is mainly a “profile” job, bring in a few votes, do a little dance, don’t make any major gaffs…when was the last time a VP made policy? They are figure heads, they sometimes take the first political bullet.
No one said “utterly lacking”, a bit of an overstatement? He was lacking in personality, charisma, consistency, honesty, integrity, conservatism, not devoid, but lacking–he didn’t measure up. So we made a decision, something you have to wrestle with apparently.

right2bright on April 9, 2008 at 3:45 PM

The idea of an arena, though implying winners and losers, does not imply that upon losing one is no longer allowed in the arena. Ronald Reagan comes to mind here.

right2bright on April 9, 2008 at 3:40 PM
First, I never even came close to suggesting that you had to accept all ideas. I never said that if you think an idea is wrong, that you nevertheless should accept it out of a commitment to diversity. What I object to is these type of statements, which is a direct quote: “huckabee, please, just GO AWAY!”.

If it was merely the ideas being objected to here, one could 1) reject his ideas, and 2) argue why others should too. That’s what the arena is all about, after all. But when one effectively says to the other team, “please get off the court and don’t come back,” one has moved past a mere rejection of ideas.
