Clinton official: Can’t get over Jeremiah Wright

How much do readers want to bet that Lanny Davis gets over the Jeremiah Wright scandal at about the time Hillary Clinton gets out of the race? Me too, but for the moment, we can enjoy the blue-on-blue attacks that presage the general election:

I have tried to get over my unease surrounding Barack Obama’s response to the sermons and writings of his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. But the unanswered questions remain.

I am a strong supporter of and a substantial fundraiser for Hillary Clinton for president (though in this column I speak only for myself). I still believe she should and will be the Democratic nominee. But if Sen. Obama wins the nomination, he needs to understand that this issue goes well beyond Clinton partisans. Now is the time to address these questions, not later.

Clearly Mr. Obama does not share the extremist views of Rev. Wright. He is a tolerant and honorable person. But that is not the issue. The questions remain: Why did he stay a member of the congregation? Why didn’t he speak up earlier? And why did he reward Rev. Wright with a campaign position even after knowing of his comments?

Davis isn’t buying the beloved-but-occasionally-loony-uncle excuse, either. He notes that Obama didn’t have to maintain any familial relationship with Wright, but instead chose to remain close to the pastor. He had Wright perform his marriage ceremony and took his daughters to receive religious instruction from Wright. Obama has never even pointed to a time when he objected to Wright’s demagoguery — until everyone else noticed it.

This column serves as a response to Joe Klein, who accused Davis of “spreading the poison” during an appearance on CNN. Davis then explains that he’s not raising the point because he doubts Obama’s motives, but that he needs to prepare for a bruising general election. In Davis’ explanation, he has to discuss it now because the eeeeeevil Republican “attack machine” will bring it up later.

Horse puckey. If it’s “attack machine” fodder, Davis worked for the best of them in the Clinton administration. The Clinton campaign didn’t bring up the Wright Stuff because they wanted to help develop a defense against it for his general-election credibility. They brought it up because his long association with Wright calls into serious question the judgment he claims as an advantage over the experience of Hillary Clinton and John McCain. Wright occupied a role in Obama’s campaign, and bacjk when he needed Chicago for his political ambitions, he publicly embraced Wright for his political and spiritual guidance. He demoted Wright to “just a pastor” without explaining the tens of thousands of dollars Obama gave Trinity while Wright served up hate speech at the pulpit.

If this is good enough for the Clinton campaign and its surrogates to discuss on CNN and the pages of the Wall Street Journal, then it hardly amounts to an “attack machine” subject for Republicans. Davis wants to avoid responsibility for tough campaigning while conducting it. It’s an exercise in intellectual and ethical dishonesty.

I am telling you the image of Jeremiah Wright “Screaming US of KKK A” while 8,000 so-called Americans cheer is the game. Obama can’t beat that image.

JayHaw Phrenzie on April 9, 2008 at 6:31 PM

You can be sure we’ve not heard the end of Jeremiah Wright’s hateful preaching.

What does Hillary have on Lanny Davis? Whatever it is, it goes back a long way.

The Race Card on April 9, 2008 at 6:37 PM

She and McCain had their chances weeks ago with this. It’ll stick around, but it looks desperate on her part and simply racist on his part (but only because he puts an R beside his name). Believe me when I tell you that I am loving this!!! I always laugh out loud…literally…when I hear my black democrat friends talk about how “mean” and “self-centered” the Clintons are. It’s priceless I tell ya!

SouthernGent on April 9, 2008 at 6:38 PM

If a Republican Politician even walked past a white racist church the Democrats and MSM would be screaming for jail time.

Agreed. Not a chance in hell. This year, the 3rd Democrat wins. Guess we’ll have a greener Iraq.

The Clintons’ concern about what Obama will face from the right wing attack machine is really touching. They’re so concerned that they are giving Obama a chance to rehearse by launching the attacks themselves.

Captain,
That should be “orange on orange” attacks. We’re the “blue” side.

Just how much money did B. Hussein Obama donate to the chruch that preached “its all whitey’s fault”, that Jesus is black and that “God bless America, no no no, God damn America? To the cheers of the church goers. This picture of Obama as having good judgement does not stand up to examination.

It’s an exercise in intellectual and ethical dishonesty.

Surely you caught Lanny doing his bit on all the news shows during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Dishonesty (intellectually, ethically, or otherwise) is what Lanny’s all about; it’s who he is. Your remarks remind me of those people who get mad at their dogs because they mark their territory with urine or dig holes in the yard. A dog is going to be a dog, just like Lanny is going to be Lanny. No point in getting worked up over it.

AZCoyote on April 9, 2008 at 7:06 PM

Ed: “Davis isn’t buying the beloved-but-occasionally-loony-uncle excuse, either.

Hey – I have (”only”) a crazy uncle, and I cut off communications with him YEARS AGO.

Lockstein13 on April 9, 2008 at 7:21 PM

Lanny every once in a while has pangs of remorse — as a fellow Yalie, he has defended George W. Bush on occasion from some of the loopier critics on the left — so given Hillary’s position right now with those same people as the Democrats’ distaff version of GWB, it’s not surprising the Clinton campaign would send him out there to be the “moderate” when it comes to talking about Rev. Wright.

Lanny’s problem, and Hillary’s, is that they can’t slam the reverend without weighing the consequences of a major drop in turnout of African-American voters in November, if Clinton were to come back and win the nomination. So everything has to be pinned on the Republicans, and if need be this fall, the Clinton machine will make John McCain out to be worse than George Wallace, Orville Faubus, Strom Thurmond and Lester Maddux combined, if they think it will take scaring African-American voters to the polls.

jon1979 on April 9, 2008 at 7:27 PM

Ed,

Davis is a smart politico and while he no doubt wants to injure Obama, his point that if Obama doesn’t address the Wright issue head on now, it will dog him in the general election is simple reality.

Dems who don’t support Obama are in a bind. They recognize his weaknesses as a candidate but also know the math. No Democrat can be elected president if he gets less than 90% of the black vote. Ironically, stroking the race pimps and grievance mongers may end up biting the Dems on their behinds if Hillary gets the nod. A significant number of blacks will stick it to the [wo]man by sitting home in November.

rokemronnie on April 9, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Besides the fact that I think the Obama knows jack about economical and foreign policies, I can not get over his affiliations with Wright and Meeks and that white “Priest”, who should be defrocked. I can’t get passed Michelle’s college thesis either. And, I can not believe Obama is still high in the polls. Is everyone high out there themselves??

Did Lanny Davis ever practice law, or did he go straight from the bar exam to Clintonista Hustler Extraordinaire?

Karma, sweetheart, you magnificent bitch!!

drunyan8315 on April 9, 2008 at 8:48 PM

He is a tolerant and honorable person.

The evidence is that Obama is an extremist who, incredibly, has hidden it well from the passive public.

fogw on April 9, 2008 at 7:54 PM

Actually, he graduated from Yale Law School in 1970, and then went right into politics. He only started practicing law 5 years later.

My guess is that since he Met Mrs. Bill Clinton while at Yale Law, she knows of the skeletons in his closet. No doubt, of all of those 900 FBI files she has her claws on, Lanny’s name is on many more than one of them.

Del Dolemonte on April 9, 2008 at 9:08 PM

During the constant never ending scandels of the Clinton
Administration,Lanny Davis was front and centre,24/7!

Lanny Davis was paraded on every lefty talkin head
program’s to defend the Clintons, and he was an unabashed
rabid attack dog!

Oh ya,the best thing for the eeeevil “Republican attack
machine” is to ignore this race episode that Lanny hopes
the’ll engage in. Its a distraction that Lanny wants to
exploit, that way they can skate away from the real issues,
like Irag,WOT,and the economy!

If your looking for a divertor,Lannys it!

At least nowadays with blogs and YouTube, we can play their words back on them. Maybe someday they’ll think about the embarrassment of re-runs before they speak.

petefrt on April 9, 2008 at 9:24 PM

It’s just funny. I am loving this Dem on Dem action. Oh please please please let this go all the way to the convention…please!

HawaiiLwyr on April 9, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Lanny Davis is once again trying to come to the forefront as Shillary’s #1 Toady. The guy was a total slimeball back when Bubba Billy was stinking up the White House, and he is still a total slimeball. The only way he is going to shut his yap is when she finally either drops out of the race or gets booted out. Till then, where ever there is a camera and a microphone, there you will find Lanny.

Who wouldn’t love to take a peek at Sen. Clinton’s copies of the FBI files? If Lanny Davis, true “blue” Clinton apologizer and water carrier, has a juicy fine, you can bet he has a lot of company, big names to boot.

I mean “file”. ‘Scuse the typo.

Clearly Mr. Obama does not share the extremist views of Rev. Wright. He is a tolerant and honorable person.

This statement is an example of how morons lie to themselves and to the public.

If Barak “Hussain” Obama was a tolerant and honorable person, he would not have attended what is in effect a KKK rally every week.

Clearly, If man in South Carolina goes to a KKK rally every week for 20 years, takes his wife & kids and even wears the sheet and then tells me that he doesn’t agree at least somewhat with the Grand Wizards philosophy, I might call him a liar

Clearly Lanny is not alone…LOL.

This is a non story, it’s boring, it’s tired, it’s over and the Far Right Fringe’s assault on Obama bombed as bad as Clooney’s movie.

On to the next big drama.
