Rockefeller: Military pilots don’t care about humanity Update: Rockefeller apologizes

Wow. Just wow:

In the Charleston Gazette Sunday, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-WV, who has endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said that Sen. John McCain “has a temper” and, according to the story, “believes McCain has become insensitive to many human issues.

“McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn’t know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues.”

If this sounds familiar to you, it should; it’s basically what the North Vietnamese said about McCain while they tortured him in the POW camps. It indicts everyone in the Air Force and the Navy whose job it is to fire laser-guided missiles now in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. Rockefeller also sounds an awful lot like Barack Obama, who claimed that the entire strategy in Afghanistan consisted of “just air raiding villages and killing civilians”.

Besides, fighter pilots don’t drop a lot of bombs; they protect bombers. They generally engage other aircraft and most of their targets are air-to-air.

So, note to our pilots and aviators: you obviously have anger issues if you enlisted in the Air Force or Navy. Senator Rockefeller and his fellow Democrats apparently believe that you hate humanity as evidenced by volunteering to conduct air campaigns against America’s enemies. In fact, Senator Rockefeller (D-WV) comes close to considering you war criminals. Of course, this would be much more offensive if Rockefeller had a single foggy clue as to what a fighter pilot actually does.

Oh, and one more note to Rockefeller: Laser-guided missiles and bombs actually reduce collateral civilian casualties. Just thought you should know.

Addendum: What was Rockefeller’s stance on Bill Clinton’s Bosnian intervention, which consisted solely of Air Force strikes?

Update: Added the Navy, which was McCain’s branch, after all … Also, Michael Goldfarb reminds Rockefeller that McCain got shot down on a low-level attack that was designed to minimize collateral casualties.

Update II: Be sure to read the comments for better clarification as to the role of fighters in Vietnam.

Update III: Rockefeller apologizes after Obama criticizes his statement:

Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a Barack Obama supporter, apologized to John McCain Tuesday for suggesting to a West Virginia newspaper that the Arizona senator does not care about “the lives of people” caught in the wars he champions, dating back to his Navy service in Vietnam.

The apology came after Barack Obama’s campaign swiftly criticized the West Virginia senator for the remarks quoted Monday in his hometown newspaper. Rockefeller told The Charleston Gazette that McCain is too far removed from the repercussions of war to deal with them. …

On Tuesday, Rockefeller issued a statement, saying, “I have deep respect for John McCain’s honorable and noble service to our country. I made an inaccurate and wrong analogy and I have extended my sincere apology to him.

“While we differ a great deal on policy issues, I profoundly respect and appreciate his dedication to our country, and I regret my very poor choice of words,” he said.

To be honest, I think the apology needed to be directed to our current and former military aviators more than John McCain.  McCain’s used to political hacks making stupid statements, but Rockefeller’s statement insulted the honor of every pilot who ever flew a war mission for the US.

Also, as I wrote last week, I’d rather the candidates quit asking for apologies for offenses against themselves and instead used the offenses as legitimate fodder for campaigning.   McCain’s no victim in American politics, and demands for apologies send the wrong message.  Let Rockefeller’s words stand in testament as to what leading Democrats really think about our military.

I wonder if Rockefeller thinks that McCain deserved being captured and tortured for five years, so that he could learn a lesson about “humanity”.

Rockefeller doesn’t have the reputation of Joe Biden in allowing his mouth to spout syllables before his brain is engaged simply because he hasn’t run for president, and having Robert C. Byrd as West Virginia’s other senator makes Jay seem relatively sane and lucid by comparison.

Is this commentary on the waging of war, from someone who never waged war?

I wonder, instead of bombing cities, which are full of people and factories engaged in the manufacture of weapons used to wage war, would this pissant prefer that boots on the ground be exposed, in house-to-house fighting, instead?

For all of you who bombed Germany and Japan – you are war criminals. The fact that you helped to defeat Nazism and Japanese militarism is irrelevant.

Rockefeller reminds me of the same kind of pissant who would lament the use of nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, unless, of course, his worthless ass was in a landing craft, headed towards a Kyushu beach.

Pissant.

Rockefeller took a trip to the middle east, after being briefed on preparations for the war, and warned the iraqis, syrians and iranians that we were coming. He gave saddam lots of time to ship his wmds to syria.

Oops, I guess that’s more of what allah calls conservative trutherism.

William Tecumsah Sherman said it best “War is Hell”. Of course, Senator Rockefeller wouldn’t know that since he lives in La-La Land where his servants are seen, but never heard, money is always available (just tax more serfs) and the coal fields of West Virginia are for lesser people to work.

Perhaps the ‘good’ Senator is vying for a VP slot?

Rockefeller voted for the war authorization in 2003, correct? So he supports sending brave military people out to drop “laser guided bombs” on innocent civilians while he sits in comfort back in Washington, DC or in his home state?

If the pilot is so detatched, “long gone” when the munition hits the ground, exactly where is this bastard who voted to send the pilot into harm’s way, exactly?

Fact check on line one. Paveways began testing in Vietnam in 1968. John McCain was shot down over Vietnam in October 1967, and remained a POW for more than 5 years.

No doubt that he likely never fired a single laser guided bomb in his service to our nation.

Not that it matters much as the larger point is Rockefeller’s utter disdain for the pilots flying for the US Navy, Air Force and Marines. He ignores the ROE that limits where and how those pilots can engage targets and the lengths to which we go to limit collateral damage.

lawhawk on April 8, 2008 at 2:25 PM

What saves lives in war is an overwhelming military force that so demoralizes the other side that they give up. Wars don’t end by numbers on a balance sheet. They end with one side’s complete exhaustion.

William Tecumsah Sherman said it best “War is Hell”.

It’s a misquote. Sherman said “War is cruelty”.

It’s from his letter to the city fathers of Atlanta demanding that the city be evacuated so his army could occupy it.

You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour out. I know I had no hand in making this war, and I know I will make more sacrifices to-day than any of you to secure peace.

Ed Morrissey on April 8, 2008 at 2:20 PM

He was an A-4 Skyhawk pilot…though you can safely call him a fighter pilot (Naval aviator synonym only, for the pedantic tards in the audience) his jet had very limited air-air capabilities. Back then the F-4 Phantom II was the air-air jet of choice…and the Phantom had a air-ground role as well.

James on April 8, 2008 at 2:31 PM

I’m an Infantryman. When I kill people I get up close and personal. Does that mean I care more about humanity than a pilot?

JasonG on April 8, 2008 at 2:33 PM

The sad irony of Rockefeller’s remarks is that US pilots over North Vietnam were put at risk by policies from Washington that for a long time wouldn’t let them target the SAM batteries in and around Hanoi. Pilots who “went downtown” over Hanoi were reprimanded.

It also ignores the amazing bravery of men like the Wild Weasels, who would deliberately fly into N. Vietnamese air defense systems to get them to trigger their radars so that other squadrons could identify the radar sites and take them out.

Though the traditional designations are still used: A for attack plane, F for fighter, B for bomber, all of our current “fighters” have both air-air and air-ground roles.

Sometimes, though, like with the A-10 “Warthog” tank killer, a purpose built plane can do a specific task better. Our fighters are really too fast and fly too high to provide effective close air support. The A-10 is subsonic, built to withstand unreal damage (Google A-10 and “Killer Chick”) with redundant hydraulics and a manual cable backup. Hopefully Pentagon planners will not only keep the A-10 alive but also earmark a replacement.

rokemronnie on April 8, 2008 at 2:38 PM

McCain flew an A4: A = attack or multirole with the emphasis on bombing. No smart bomb capability with this aircraft as such the low level penetration profile was the preferred method for accurate delivery. (Paveway was pretty much an Air Force project, F-111’s or F-4’s some 2 up F-105’s) Rockefeller is contemptible and needs to be held accountable for this pathetic partisan BS!

By the time of the Vietnam War, we were shooting laser energy blasts from satellites. Sure, the fighter-bombers would occasionally drop disintegration bombs and just vaporize huge areas at a time, but that’s just in case the death ray from outer space was on the fritz that day. I haven’t even mentioned the soldiers with lasers shooting out of their eyes, but they were total bad asses back in ‘Nam.

A Letter from Jay
Dear visitor;

Welcome to my web site. You only need to turn on the news to realize the difficulties our nation faces. With soaring gasoline prices, families losing their homes, rising anti-American violence around the world, violence in our schools, in our neighborhoods, the importance of this election cannot be understated.

Liberal Democrats are closer than ever to wrecking our economy, destroying traditional family values and shredding our liberties.

Republicans need only two seats to win back the majority in the U.S. Senate.

This year, we are guaranteed that an extreme liberal Democrat will be running for President. I believe West Virginia Republicans and Democrats alike will be electing a Republican for President, just like they did in 2000 and 2004.

In 2002, I was Senator Rockefeller’s opponent and came within 13% of defeating him and he outspent me 20 to 1. That year, there were no Presidential coattails to help me.

While it is true that we are a predominantly Democrat state, most of our Democrats are family-oriented, pro-life, liberty-minded conservatives that will vote their conscience when they know the issues at stake.

I have had an opportunity to study and compile, for your review, Senator Rockefeller’s embarrassingly liberal voting record. When West Virginians find out just how liberal he has become, those same voters who elect John McCain for President will also elect me to the U.S. Senate – and won’t we have a fine celebration when that happens.

There has never been a better time to defeat Senator Rockefeller and here are two things I need you to do:

First, go to the Jay Vs Jay Poll and see which Jay best represents your values and views. If you agree with me on at least 6 out of 10 issues, then print out the poll and distribute copies to your West Virginia friends.

Secondly, millions of dollars each day have been pouring into the Democrat campaign funds through their web sites. The liberals know the importance of this election and they are digging down deep to help their liberal champions. The best chance we have of thwarting their extreme liberal agenda is in the Senate. This is a serious matter; we must hold the line in the U.S. Senate!

We had precision guided weapons in Vietnam, but not for years after McCain was shot down. The advantage of precision guided munitions is the the way they drastically cut down on civilian casualties.

Although the fighter mafia has mostly eradicated the dedicated attack aircraft, when McCain was flying, he was flying a dedicated attack aircraft, the A-4 Skyhawk.

This is a good time to call both your senators and ask them to review McCain’s record before they embarrass your entire state: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm?State=OR

(1) First, can we request Senators take IQ test, no staffer help, please?
(2) Secondly, Careful, Senator. Your remarks encompass a whole lot of veterans who fought in war(s). Not just McCain, not just Vietnam. Think about it, if Rockefeller felt this way about Fighter Pilots, how does the Senator regard Bomber crew?

Sir Napsalot on April 8, 2008 at 3:06 PM

As a current fighter pilot (F-16) who just got back from the desert a few months ago, I think that Sen. Rockefeller is a loon. I’d expect to hear that from fringe folks manning the picket lines outside of recruiting centers in Berkeley, but an elected official saying this kind of garbage?

Vote him out, West Virginia.

On another note, I think our community (at least the Air Force) cuts a rather large swath when the term “fighter pilot” is used. IMO, it really applies to anyone at the controls of two-seat-or-less aircraft who are on the pointy end of the spear. I’ve heard A-10 pilots refer to themselves as fighter pilots (or “Hog Drivers”) before, and I can’t say I’d disagree with them.

The laser that guides laser guided bombs has to be held by somebody.

In most cases, that is either the pilot who dropped the bomb or his wingmate.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, special forces teams also served as laser designators. However in the Vietnam era the lasers were too big and power hungry to be used by ground forces. Especially ones that had to sneak behind enemy lines for days at a time.

Anyone who drops laser guided bombs has to stick around until the bomb hits. They also have to concentrate, very hard, on the point that the bomb is supposed to hit, so they can keep the designator on that spot.

MarkTheGreat on April 8, 2008 at 3:24 PM

This guy reflects the same sentiment I once read in a review of a movie that the reviewer panned because it “glorified war.” That reviewer said something like this: “The film is about World War II pilots who really knew nothing about the horror of the war because they flew in from England and did not fight on the ground.”

A member of my family flew in the Mighty 8th Air Force and was shot down over Germany. We lost 100,000 men in the air over Europe, and this dick didn’t think World War II pilots knew the horror of war. What a douche.

Rockefeller is just reflecting what the left thinks of combat pilots. Of course, they don’t have the same experience as the grunt, but they dodge a lot of ground fire, and they know that AQ or JAM will torture them to death if they have to eject. This douche in West Virginia needs to STF up. If I ever get close enough I will spit on him.

And to our combat pilots, both past and present: Thank you for your service. You are the arsenal of democracy.

fleiter on April 8, 2008 at 3:24 PM

I’ve also got to add, that not too many folks other than the B-52 pilots dropped bombs from 35,000 feet during Vietnam. To have a chance in hell of hitting what you were aiming at, you’d have to get down low “in the weeds” before dropping the bomb. Also, while the laser and satellite-guided bombs might be the weapon of choice these days, there is still a lot of strafing done (using the gun) and we get a front-row seat to “reality” when that happens.

I remember one of the most vivid “there I was” stories told to me in pilot training was by this old, crusty Vietnam F-100 pilot. He talked about going against a AAA (anti-aircraft) gun one day. He was out of bombs, and had to make a strafing run with his cannons against it. On his final pass, he obliterated the gun emplacement and caused a large explosion. As he flew through the smoke cloud/fireball, a couple of enemy body parts bounced off of his canopy.

He tells the story a lot better than I can, but that’s the jist of it. To say that fighter pilots are “removed” from what’s going on on the ground is ludicrous. A-10 pilots get in low and close all of the time, and even us F-16 guys have had to do a lot of strafing in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rick on April 8, 2008 at 3:29 PM

If this sounds familiar to you, it should; it’s basically what the North Vietnamese said about McCain while they tortured him in the POW camps.

It sounded familiar to me because it was the plot of a MASH episode.

Man, I hate that show.

I would respond to Senator Rockefeller but my choice of words would certainly get me banned.

BTW: His oil mongering forebears are responsible for AGW, aren’t they?? Planet killers don’t care about people!

MCPO Airdale on April 8, 2008 at 3:32 PM

I’m sure that Senator Jay makes sure every day that Standard Oil sells no fuel to the Air Force or the Navy.

Akzed on April 8, 2008 at 3:32 PM

…not too many folks other than the B-52 pilots dropped bombs from 35,000 feet during Vietnam.

That’s the truth.
What an idiotic statement for Rockefeller to make.

My husband flew A-7s in Viet Nam.
I guess I need to tell him that he’s a war criminal.

kakypat on April 8, 2008 at 3:41 PM

It must be nice to be a rich twit like Rocky.

RobCon on April 8, 2008 at 3:44 PM

I’m not sure when McCain was shot down but second real target hit (three days after the first) by the first generation of laser guided bombs was the Thanh Hoa Bridge in North Vietnam. More good info concerning “Blind Bat” aircraft can be found here.

As for the disloyal Senator from West Virginia, he should resign. America has enough external enemies, they do not need any help from inside our Capital.

Zorro on April 8, 2008 at 3:44 PM

On October 26th, 1967, while on his 23rd bombing mission, a surface to air missile hit McCain’s plane, forcing him to eject, knocking him unconscious and breaking both his arms and his leg. He fell into a lake where he used his teeth to inflate his life vest. A North Vietnamese mob dragged him out of the water, where someone in the crowd bayoneted him and turned over to the local authorities.

SoonerMarine on April 8, 2008 at 3:49 PM

Did we have laser guided bombs during Vietnam?

Les in NC on April 8, 2008 at 2:00 PM

That was my first thought, radar guided maybe but I don’t think laser guided bombs were in play until the gulf war I.

Just goes to prove what a rich idiot this guy is, he doesn’t know laser guided bombs weren’t used in Vietnam, doesn’t know a fighter pilots main function is to protect other aircraft i.e. bombers, surv aircraft, etc.

What’s that old saying about it’s better to keep silent and appear to be ignorant then to speak and remove all doubt..that’s this azz hat!

Go count your money ya liberal blood sucker!

Liberty or Death on April 8, 2008 at 3:51 PM

Wow, McCain won’t have to raise any more money for campaign ads. The Dems just keep blurting out one disastrous sound bite after the other.

Thanks Jay.

Oops, he can’t hear me with his head so far up there.

fogw on April 8, 2008 at 3:51 PM

I forgot to add the date the Thanh Hoa Bridge was destroyed. The 8th TFW at Ubon was credited with taking this bridge down on May 13, 1972

Jay Rockefeller is yet another poster child for Term Limitation in Congress and the Senate.
pilamaye on April 8, 2008 at 2:01 PM

Term of legislative office
Articles of Confederation: One year
Constitution: Two years for Representatives, six for Senators

Term limit for legislative office
Articles of Confederation: No more than three out of every six years
Constitution: None

The 17th Amendment changed the selection of Senators from “chosen by the Legislature thereof” to “elected by the people thereof”.

The 22nd Amendment established the two-term limit for the office of the President.

Anyone in favor of repealing the 17th Amendment and/or passing & ratifying a new amendment to establish a two-term limit for Senators and six-term limit for Representatives?

Red Pill on April 8, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Red Pill on April 8, 2008 at 3:53 PM

The 17th Amendment disenfranchised the states, making senators at-large congressmen upon whom I have little influence. If my state rep was to vote on sending a senator to DC, I could camp on his doorstep with 100 other people and have some influence over who is sent, not to mention who is recalled for malfeasance. I have long felt that this amendment is the most destructive, next to the 19th.

Jay Rockefeller is nothing but a spoiled rich kid who never spent one day in his life inside a public school and he never worked one day of his life with his back and his hands. When other high school kids were scooping ice cream cones at the local Ben & Jerrys, Jay Rockefeller was having the family butlers take him to the yacht club. Jay Rockefeller talks like an old fashioned aristocrat. The only topic that interests him is what prep schools and debutante balls his family members go to. Jay Rockefeller looks at coal miners as primitives. He seems himself as an anthropologist observing the primitives.

Larraby on April 8, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Apology or no, Rockefeller is still a pansy and a tool. To quote Bart Simpson, “I didn’t think it was possible but he both sucks and blows.”

Vote Sauron 08 on April 8, 2008 at 4:15 PM

Since when did it become the job of military pilots to worry about the well-being of the people that they’re attacking? A military pilot’s job is to disrupt the well-being of those people.

Rockefeller’s been watching too much Oprah.
