Good lord: Entire original “Star Trek” series now online?

And that’s not all, brother, that’s not all. Valleywag reported this six weeks ago but it’s news to me and at least a few of our commenters, per Headlines. As surprising as finding the episodes is finding that the videos are not only large but high quality; the worst fight sequence ever committed to film has never looked better. Attention, Hulu: Consider this ante upped. Click the image to watch.

What’s next? The complete Green Acres?

WOW! That fight scene sucked! Guess I wasn’t much of a critic when I was 6 years old.

Are these the new, improved TOS episodes, with the new CGI effects shots?

Now all it needs to do is buffer faster so viewing is smooth. Heck, even the commercial ran in fits and starts and I have a cable modem.

I added links to a couple on my website. Also using hulu and other sites to add other shows. It seems lots of TV shows are now online.

Hopefully they will allow embeding soon

We called the other day to cancel our cable television. We have a pretty sweet home theater setup - hi def projector, 10 foot screen, 5.1 surround all for less than $1000 dollars between sales, rebates, etc.

So we added an old computer to it - between all these TV shows online and Netflix video on demand, we have more entertainment on tap than we’ll ever watch, and can pocket the $50/month.

I wonder if they have Space:1999?

Worst sci-fi show ever. Have you actually tried to watch an episode lately?

But come on man…ALL TV from the “Classic” era is crap!

I am 42 years old; like all impressionable kids I viewed all that tripe and liked it… when I was a kid. Now that stuff is just… un-watchable.

24. Battlestar Galactica. Lost. The Wire. Entourage.

Contemporary shows are better than movies now, and the old TV is a joke in comparison.

pseudonominus on April 8, 2008 at 10:53 AM

We called the other day to cancel our cable television.

And now that The Wire’s run on HBO is over I thought much the same thing. Then I realized my kids would kill me if they couldn’t see the occasional show on Noggin. The digital cable, it stays. I may still turn HBO off. The John Adams thing was OK but not great.

I mentioned this on my blog a few weeks back, along with the first two seasons of Twilight Zone. But I live in Europe, and so they’re not available to me. But it’s term-paper time, so it’s probably a good thing I don’t have more distractions.

Netflix has a TON of the Doctor on demand, including the classic Tom Baker episodes.

Laura on April 8, 2008 at 11:41 AM

I’ve given The Worst Fight Scene Ever a bit of a pass over the years, since it was actually the only TOS episode adapted from an outside source, Fredrick Brown’s short story “Arena”, with James T. Kirk being shoehorned into the original plot. There are fight scenes from Seasons 2 and 3 that make me cringe far more than this one.

I suppose CBS/Paramount feels safe to put this online since they’ve already come out with the “remastered” episodes from the first three seasons of Star Trek that are in syndication, and no doubt will be coming to a DVD near you any day now.

And, going the other way, if you want to watch the original 1967 NBC broadcast of Ricardo Montalban’s debut as Kahn, complete with 1967 commercials, that’s also on YouTube.

Oh dude, please don’t go there. Judging from your 4:42 p.m. post, please channel your energies into a quote-fest instead.

“He’s dead Jim.”
“I’m a doctor not a moon shuttle conductor.”
“Fascinating”
“Threats are illogical and payment is often expensive.”
“They say thy Vulcan blood is thin Spock, art thee Vulcan or art thee Human?”
“I gave them to the Klingons . . . where they’ll be no tribble at all.”

I love the opening credits where Dirk Benedict (the original Lt. Starbuck) does a double take when he sees the guy in a Cylon costume at some theme park. Yeah, I love it when a plan comes together.

And yes for those of you wondering, I was a geeky kid that watched too much TV. I’m over it now. Grown. Married. 5 kids, who I am diligently teaching all this stuff to.

That episode was worse than Spock’s Brain, IMO. So bad, in fact, that it is not listed on the web site in any season. Well, since they also have Miri and a few other stinkers up there, it can’t be a quality issue. Perhaps it’s because all the ignorant locals have Arabic-sounding names and CBS is not in the mood for a fatwa.

Hey, who wants to fill up this comments area with our own personal picks and pans from TOS?

Fredric Brown was given the credit for it, but it wasn’t actually from that short story at all.

Asher on April 8, 2008 at 4:44 PM

Can we have a Joel v. Mike debate instead? I go with Mike for these reasons, he’s not a namby pampy when it comes to trashing the movies (where as Joel’s attitude always seemed to be “come on guys, they tried really hard in making it” and insisted that they always find at least one good thing about the movie — even with Manos: the Hands of Fate), I think Joel spent most of his time stoned, Mike’s wit was more bighting and sarcastic, he describes his politics as “right of center” and he has a good looking wife.

Sorry, like I’ve said before it’s my only geek cred and even there I’m on the wrong side.

Did someone say “Kirk vs. Picard?”

inviolet on April 8, 2008 at 8:43 PM

For all the people bashing TOS, please consider the other hit contemporary shows:

- Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
- Time Tunnel
- Green Hornet
- Bat Man
- etc.

Now those were junk. Yes, the “action” scenes in Star Trek were weak, but the prevailing paradigm was to not try and film intense action scenes for TV for two reasons: 1) The best cameras were reserved for movies, and those used for TV were not as able to capture such action with good resolution. 2) The quality and definition of TV broadcasts in the late 60’s wasn’t exactly HD, too much of a high-speed action scene would be lost, so they kept everything simple.
