Video: MTV’s Holocaust PSAs
posted at 12:45 pm on April 7, 2008 by Allahpundit
Another foray into Holocaust revisionism by way of likening the Patriot Act to nascent genocide? CJ’s 100% sure, I’m only about 75% of the way there. The Think MTV website has a page on the Holocaust and discrimination, and the only modern example to which it refers is Darfur. This may simply be their way of putting kids in the shoes of modern-day victims of persecution by placing it in a familiar cultural setting. Or maybe it’s a commentary on the Bushitler. Like HuffPo says, “being ambiguous has its benefits — you don’t have to be held accountable for anything, because there’s always another angle you can claim when confronted.”
Honestly? If my belly wasn’t so full of the left’s nonsense in this vein over the past six years, if it was produced not by MTV but as some sort of video greeting for the Holocaust Museum in D.C., I’d think it was effective.

Here’s a trick, MTV… instead of making the holocaust about indulging your paranoid fantasies, how about you honor the memory of the victims?

And it could happen again, but this time it’ll be a muslim genocide against infidels. Wake up, lefties! No wait, don’t, ’cause when the Left (commies) wakes up, genocides follow.

I am going to swim against the tide on this one. Those are very effective. Gave me a chill up my spine. Very good at making the Shoah real. I am not comfortable with the use of US Troops? Are they cops?. The second one looks like your average episode of COPS until the end. I hope they don’t turn this into some inane paranoid fantasy.
Anyway as they are, I liked em.

I don’t think they are. They’re in generic black, they use careful cuts to not show any emblems or any flags… I gotta agree with AP, by themselves, I think it’s more about Holocaust awareness for younger kids.

Funny, because the militarized police is the standard in urban, left of spectrum ran cities and states. Liberal Federal/state/local governments are granting superpowers to their LEO agencies. Boston police was trying (i believe they backed up) to get access to homes with no warrants to search for weapons, but you know, “It’s for the Childreeen!”.
What is funny, but really isn’t, is that MTV make it look like it’s conservative, or right wing policies that are looking to achieve that. Probably the same people that has the face to say that the Mainstream Media is controlled by the right
mile66 on April 7, 2008 at 1:06 PM
If I wasn’t so cynical, I’d say it’s simply attempting to get today’s kids to be aware of and understand what happened during the Holocaust. It’s almost putting them in the victim’s shoes.
I could be totally off-base, of course.

I think some conservative group needs to put together a video of some protesters urinating and throwing paint on our national monuments.
Maybe a video of a professor walking out to her car, screaming for help because someone vandalized her car, and show her in handcuffs as the perpetrator.
How about someone giving a speech on college campuses, and being shouted down and attacked by “leftists” and show footage of Hitler SS doing the same.
Now that would be more like reality. The only attacking in this nation is by leftists…remember the young man who voted republican, and a crazy democrat broke into his house and beat him?
Too many to recount…far too many.

Given the source of the ads, I am wary. That said, there is an actual genocide underway in Darfur, so perhaps the mentions of it on the web site are legit and this is an attempt to animate their viewers towards doing something to stop it. If so, it seems like they should provide suggestions on how it could be achieved.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 7, 2008 at 1:12 PM
A few things from their website:
A) They seem to be concentrating on the actual Holocaust against the Jews and connecting it to what’s happening in Sudan.
B) Keep in mind something that’s also (besides Bush hatred) very important to Hollywood and its ilk: Darfur. As Allah says, that is mentioned by name on the site several times.
Honestly, I think it’s just an attempt to connect the Holocaust against the Jews with the genocide in Darfur today.
amerpundit on April 7, 2008 at 1:13 PM
Maybe the people in the first spot were victims of a flu outbreak under national healthcare? I’m not sure on that one, but I’m almost certain the folks in the second were either gun owners or home schoolers (though they were playing video games, and Barrack doesn’t like video games. Hmm…).
And here I was, assuming MTV was actually in favor of the Democrat agenda!

MTV is the anti-Christ. Started as a music video monopoly.I wonder why there aren’t any channels to play rock videos since MTV is strictly about social engineering and political correctness for all things left.Maybe Rupert Murdoch can start a new station( I love what he’s done with Fox)that features new and old rock bands and shows them actually playing their instruments. Now there’s a concept!!MTV is strictly there to provide leftist/socialist/gay agendas. They killed Rock and Roll, and are keeping Rap on a feeding tube ala Terry Schiavo. Give up the Ghost…

Interesting videos. I suppose they are okay for highlighting Darfur, but if it’s supposed to bring awareness to that situation aren’t they missing one vital cultural/religious aspect? Just saying it’s not white Christians who are massacring peoples there…
I miss videos. I miss watching MTV playing videos. They need to change the name – music is not longer relevant to MUSIC TeleVision…

It would have been better if at the end Michael Jackson jumped out and sang:
Cause this is Thriller…thriller yeah!
And then all the holocaust victims lined up and started doing that dance thing.
Roger Waters on April 7, 2008 at 1:26 PM
Confused. If the point is to educate our nation’s ignorant youth on the history of the Shoah then this fails miserably. The first ad looks more like deleted scenes from I Am Legend or a low-budget bio-terror film. The second ad could be for a home security system.
By making these ad context free MTV doesn’t provide, well, any context. And the text at the end is confusing, misleading and inaccurate. The Holocaust didn’t in fact happen to people like us in at least one key respect. It happened to people who lived in one-party dictatorships and, very importantly, the nations those dictatorships conquered in war. It didn’t happen in Britain because the Brits fought back. Is MTV advocating resistence to genocidial regimes? If so, good for them but be honest about it.
These spots treat the Holocaust as an abstraction, like something that just happens when you’re about to do your homework, like a kind of evil natural disaster. The family in the second ad acts as if they had no idea this might happen. They should have been hiding in secret bunkers or fighting the stormtroopers, not hanging out waiting to be victims.
I’m not sure what the intention is but the execution is deeply flawed. If MTV had bothered to spend an hour showing this to Holocaust scholars or historians these would have been much more effective. As it is MTV is better off showing 3 minute clips from Schindler’s List.
Vote Sauron 08 on April 7, 2008 at 1:29 PM
And perhaps MTV needs to chew on this:
The Holocaust didn’t happen to a bunch of dead-eyed apathetic teenagers. It happened to a minority group who was supposedly to blame for everything in the world. And whilst it was happening, the world slept and those dead-eyed teenagers joined the killing squads.
You want to prevent another Holocaust? Be aware of the world, be wary of those who present “simple” solutions to incredibly complex solutions, and FIGHT! But I doubt that the term fight is something MTV wants to present. Whine is more appropriate, I suppose.
mjk on April 7, 2008 at 1:30 PM
I think that’s reading too much into it. You’re talking to kids watching MTV. Their idea of “just like us” most likely means innocent parents, children and neighbors.

Featured videos and stories on the site:
“An Army Deserter’s Story”
“Explore Your Hidden Biases”
“Learn How Various Forms of Discrimination are Defined”
“Just Because You are Christian Doesn’t Mean You Have to Be Republican”
“What Are You Doing to Help Mother Earth”
“Howard Zinn Answers: America, Gentle Giant or Isideous Imperialist”
No insane left wing bias here. And I’d highly recommned the video segment where they teach the MTV demographic (high school students) how to put on a condom and smile at your boyfriend while you do it. Lovely.
As for these videos, they are the best thing the site has to offer. Thats pretty much all you need to know. And I’m not going to be the least bit surprised when these videos become more and more blatantly anti-American and left wing.

Zetterson on April 7, 2008 at 1:54 PM
The Holocaust happened to a religious minority who were villified in the culture for years before the Holocaust was even planned. From academics and cultural elites down to hotheads in the beergardens Jews were disparaged, insulted, denigrated and villified for years and years in the media.
The executives at MTV should ask themselves which religious minorities they villify on their network. In case they don’t know I can tell them for free: Catholics, Evangelical Christians and Mormons. I expect, in line with this ad campaign, a new effort at promoting tolerance to these minorities on the network. Any day now. Really.

I can understand how the knee-jerk reaction would be Bushitler, but what if these ads were just after Ruby Ridge or Waco? Hell, alter the constitution enough to adjust for “offensiveness” and you might have a family rounded up just like that for “reeducation”. After all, the government knows what you shouldn’t say and shouldn’t think.
Questioning the government’s motives doesn’t have to be wingnut liberal, nor does it have to be Paulnut Alex Jones conspiracy loon. I don’t trust the government one bit. Talking about holocaust is extreme, but as others have commented, suppose enough Keith Ellisons smooth-talk their way into power. You might just see it happen.
MadisonConservative on April 7, 2008 at 1:58 PM
I remember MTV was the only station that didn’t cut away from regular programming on 9/11.
I guess “flash in the pan” boy bands were ultimately more important than the deaths of thousands of American citizens.
Mike Honcho on April 7, 2008 at 1:58 PM
I’m not sure what to make of it. Were it from another source, I’d have no problem taking it as an ad meant to help kids identify with those who were victims of the holocaust.
As it is, since it is without context, I hope none on the Right worry too much about it lest we’re labeled alarmists.
I’ve seen a few holocaust movies, and there were scenes where the Jews basically just took it even though they had every reason to believe harm would come to them if they didn’t hide, fight or run.
I’m no historian, but it has always seemed to me that the lack of fight was a contributing factor. When reading Night, I had the feeling that if they’d only fought off the soldiers then some might have lived.

It played nothing but nonstop music videos, and the normal MTV logo was colored with the American flag.

MTV makes an excellent point. It could happen to people like us. Let’s make sure the muslims don’t get enough power to do anything like that!
thuja on April 7, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Then you might want to keep track of numbers with Islam. It’s just a matter of time.
Didn’t Islam just catch up with Catholicism?
Hening on April 7, 2008 at 2:12 PM
How did MTV come up with the time to make this video?
Doesn’t making a “True Life” special involving a lesbian who wants to be a transsexual, homosexual with an affinity for adopting a Muslim baby boy, so he can be turned into a Communist baby boy, who hates guns, take up enough time?
OhEssYouCowboys on April 7, 2008 at 2:14 PM
That would be a different subject. The subject at hand was how MTV and other mainstream outlets treat Christians, Catholics and Mormons, dehumanizing them as the minority group responsible for all the world’s ills, the same way Jews were treated.
Until Muslims are the majority in America and are running things like MTV in America, that statement will be accurate except for the part where it calls Christians and Catholics a minority group.
Esthier on April 7, 2008 at 2:16 PM
Hard to fight the government when you don’t have any weapons to fight them with. The Nazis used gun registration laws that were already in effect when Hitler came to power to identify Jews and other potential troublemakers who owned firearms so they could be disarmed. It was only after they’d been disarmed by the government that Krystalnacht happened and the Holocaust began.
Rip Ford on April 7, 2008 at 2:17 PM
I don’t recall that. I do recall quite vividly tuning in several times and seeing MTV running interviews the boy band du jour. Struck me as incredibly callous. Every other channel broke from regular programming to live news feeds (mostly from CNN). Hell even BET did. I remember a surreal interview between two black rappers and Eminem where they were trying to digest the events of that horrible day.
Mike Honcho on April 7, 2008 at 2:20 PM
I’m sorry, but I’ve only watched the two videos presented, so I don’t have the context that those of you who’ve run through the fever swamps have.
But.
I think these are good spots… considering the audience. Right now there is a young generation to whom Vietnam happened to ‘Someone Else’. Imagine the disconnect they have when they are taught about the European assault on Jews that we call the Holocaust. “Dude… that happened a long time ago, to people that have nothing in common with us.”
I personally LIKE the way they recreate the old photos in modern dress… it brings it home. The ‘raiders’ are dressed in black, as they are despite the politics of the folks demanding the roundups. I personally think it would be more likely under a “Big Government” liberal than a “Big Government”, or especially a “Small Government” conservative, so I didn’t see any connection to the Patriot Act or George W. Bush… I saw it more of a warning against voting for Hillary! :) But that’s my bias.
I really think you guys who see this as some kind of attack are reading ‘WAY too much into this. Certainly there are nuts who think that way, but these two videos are neutral… ANY powerful authoritarian group could be the ones with the dogs and guns. ANY group could be the ones rounded up.
And that, I think, was the point.

Mike Honcho on April 7, 2008 at 2:39 PM
I think putting the younger generation into the shoes of those who have suffered in the past really does strike a strong chord with the viewer. The younger generation ‘at large’ doesn’t really grasp the scope to which history has occured in the past (the good and the bad), leaving open a gap with which history may repeat itself.
However MTV could have done a much better job of this. They could of easily went from the armed men charging into a home and pulling the people out, and then as they left the home with the people they could of transitioned to Afrcian terrorists hauling out an African family and then hacking them to pieces. That transition would of been a little better.
The ambiguity of the videos ruin whatever meaning they could of had.

Hmmm… The first one was fine and damn creepy. The way it mixed the subway with a concentration camp train was perfect. It was both neutral and shocking. It was the second that pushed it to far into fantasy. The raising of the house was no where near as effective an image as the train and in fact stands sharply in contrast to it.
The whole crux of the first as the seamless transition between subway to death train. That what makes it effective. The second on the other hand is almost pathetic in its lack of transition. It’s makes the picture of the truck seem ridiculously tacked on.
The first was good. The second revealed the politics of its maker to much

You are all missing the point. In the first clip, the people are rounded up for using transportation that relies on evil CO2 emmisions. The Holocaust was brought to Europe with the aid of people like Jesse Jackson, Jeremiah Wright and jihadis who think racist and religious discrimination is fine (nay, even dandy!) as long as the “right” people get hurt. Hitler, Himmler and the rest had a lot of help from ordinary Germans, French, etc.
The jihadis are counting on the US far left to pave their way. No wonder the first thing after a revolution is to shoot the home-grown reveolutionaries. They are a future problem for their activism and traitors cannot be trusted.
