“More than a dozen calls to boycott Absolut were posted on michellemalkin.com,” notes the AP, but check out the number of comments on Absolut’s first non-apology apology for the Aztlan ad. A dozen conservative blog readers aren’t going to intimidate a company into canceling an ad campaign. Hundreds, though? Behold:
During the weekend we have received several comments on the ad published in Mexico. We acknowledge the reactions and debate and want to apologize for the concerns this ad caused. We are truly sorry and understand that the ad has offended several persons. This was not our intention. The ad has been withdrawn as of Friday April 4th and will not be used in the future.
In no way was the ad meant to offend or disparage, or advocate an altering of borders, lend support to any anti-American sentiment, or to reflect immigration issues.
To ensure that we avoid future similar mistakes, we are adjusting our internal advertising approval process for ads that are developed in local markets.
This is a genuine and sincere apology,
By Paula Eriksson, VP Corporate Communications, V&S Absolut Spirits
Follow the e-mail exchanges posted at MM’s site and compare the tone of the responses after people first started objecting to the apology quoted above, after hundreds had weighed in.
Update: According to the Times’s unscientific poll, 62% found the ad offensive.

Still mad about this… Absolut can stuff it.
BTW, for those of you lucky enough to be in Texas, if you haven’t tried Tito’s Vodka, you’re missing something wonderful! 100% American!

Absolut keeps trying to argue/imply that the US was not the intended market yet the advertisement is in English.

The real apology from Absolut has caused me to change my mind about my not drinking Jameson any more. I had two bottles in storage for later in the year….. They were given to a family down the street who are LaRaza supporters….. they have no idea what my reason was. Oh and no I don’t miss it, I don’t see it as a waste of money. It gives me an excuse to buy a new brand of Irish whiskey - Michael Collins! For those who know of the Big Fella…. you will agree that I will enjoy it….. Slainte!

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 7, 2008 at 2:52 PM
They don’t expect us to believe that, do they? They want us to believe that an ad that said in a perfect world Mexico controlled half of the United States isn’t advocating border alterations or reflecting immigration issues?

I’ve been plugging away at all three threads over at ABSOLUT over the weekend….
FYI, they’ve started editing out numerous comments as of this morning, the 2nd thread was well over 1500 comments at coffee time, and back down to 14xx by lunch.
For those wishing to contribute, here are the direct links to each of the three:

Normally I don’t enjoy piling on, but I was happily adding my 2 cents to the threads on the Absolute blog. I can confirm what Lockstein13 said, the second thread was at 1530+ posts last time I saw it. I was especially happy to see numerous people who said they were restaurant/bar owners and would be telling Absolut to take a hike.
I still want my pound of flesh. Somebody needs to lose their job over this. Whoever approved this slap in the face is clearly not up to their job.
trubble on April 7, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Why buy Absolut when there are plenty of other brands of equal cost, most of which are just as good if not better? Absolut will lose market share over this, as they should. They’ve permanently poisoned their brand in my mind, at least.

I will Absolutly NEVER drink Absolut again.
California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas are LEGALLY part of the United States of AMERICA and NO LONGER part of the United States of MEXICO. Nor have they been for nearly 100 years (or more, depending on the state).
You Finns wanna cater exclusively to the Mexican vodka market? Fine.
I’m drinking Stolichnaya from now on. Vodka’s a RUSSIAN drink originally anyway.
Go lock your marketing department in the company Sauna and keep ‘em there until they beg forgiveness!!!

My choice for vodka is Skyy — made here in the good ol’ United States of America — the full, director’s cut version.
rbj on April 7, 2008 at 3:24 PM
What I don’t get is why nobody has brought up the following point. The areas under question (California, Texas etc…) only belonged to Mexico from 1824 (when they finalized thier independence from Spain) to 1848 (when we took it from them in the Mexican American War). So, because it was part of Mexico for 24 years it is really THEIR land? The fact that it has been part of the United States for 150 years means nothing? How about that it was part of SPAIN for 300 years (along with the rest of Mexico)? Do the Spanish want it back? How about that it belonged to Native Americans for 12,000-25,000 years (depending on whose reasearch you look at)? I would say of EVERYBODY who has a claim on the land, Mexico has the least valid of them all. If you believe the land belongs to the people who settled no matter what happens after that (which has never been the case in human history BTW) then you must believe the land belongs to the natives. If however, you follow the normal convention that those who conquor get the land then the United States clearly aquired the land in the same manner land has been aquired since the founding of Sumer.
SilntThnkr on April 7, 2008 at 3:26 PM
Maybe the Mexicans and the US should go at it again…since the debate is obviously not settled.
James on April 7, 2008 at 3:28 PM

That’s commitment. Though hopefully you’ll try Monopolowa or even Smirnoff first.

I dislike this type of reaction. It smacks of an “important action alert.”
If people are offended by the ad, stop drinking Absolut.
I don’t like the victim game, nor the “it offended me so it needs to be retracted” game. Vote with your wallet, and send Absolut a message that way.
VolMagic on April 7, 2008 at 3:31 PM
How is this a non-apology apology again? What a non-story…don’t we have better things to worry about?
Constant Parrhesia on April 7, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Spain outgrew its aristocratic feudalism as well as fascism, unlike the corrupt Mexican government. Regarding Reconquista, Mexico can return sovereign dominion of itself to Spain since the Mexican government denies accepting the results of revolutionary war and subsequent treaties, and forfeits responsibility for its own population that they SEND to the USA against treaty agreement and against our laws, and contrary to their own laws regarding immigrants into Mexico. Before making bandito wishes to thieve what they lost and SOLD to the USA, Mexico better first pay the consequences of abusing their own native population as well as ours and their southern neighbors seeking asylum. The Mexican government looks no better than a pig with lipstick.
Build the fence, secure the borders and enforce rule of law so that legal immigrants can enjoy efficient, timely processing.
To hell with Absolut reversion to Mexican aristocratic feudalism seen from contemporary Mexican out-houses and shanty towns. THEIR GOVERNMENT WON’T LET US HELP THEM BUILD ENTERPRISES TO IMPROVE THEIR STANDARD OF LIVING BECAUSE THOSE THAT HAVE WOULD LOSE POWER TO ALL THOSE THEY CONTINUE TO DENEGRATE IN SUBJUGATION.

Go to the Absolut website. There are pages and pages of… err… “comments”, none of which are favorable. If Absolut wishes to sincerely apologize, then perhaps Ms. Eriksson should be fired. At that point I might believe their corporate sincerity. maybe…

I followed your link (thanks!) and left a comment. (It was clean, don’t worry.)
As I said there, any apology which states that it is “sincere and genuine” is generally neither one.
A better apology would be to cease doing business with whichever ad firm came up with this one, and clearly and publicly state why the relationship is being severed.
And if it was done “in-house”, well, it’s time to introduce whoever was responsible to the wonders of janitorial duty. At an appropriately reduced salary. (If Finland is anything like most of the rest of Scandinavia, I’m not sure pink-slipping the people responsible is even possible under their labor laws.)
Either way, they need to try again.

I agree 100% with both of you. The intent of the ad is blatantly clear. It was meant to strike a chord with the Aztlán crowd, so that they would buy more Absolut vodka.
Let them deal with the loss of sales in the USA, and let it be a lesson to other companies and advertising agencies. I’m glad they are sorry that they’ve lost sales in the USA. Let them reap what they have sown.

Don’t just boycott Absolut. Boycott all of these products owned by the parent company Pernod-Richard.
Pernod Ricard owns a wide variety of beverage brands worldwide. These include:
Royal Salute (scotch whisky)
Chivas Regal (scotch whisky)
The Glenlivet (single malt scotch whisky)
Jameson Irish Whiskey
Seagram’s gin
Pernod aux extraits d’absinthe
Wyborowa (vodka)
Ricard and 51 (pastis)
Martell (cognac)
Wild Turkey (bourbon)
Jacob’s Creek (wine)
Pernod (anise-based spirit)
Zuco
Becherovka
DITA (lychee-based spirit)
Havana Club (rum).
As of 26 July 2005, the brand portfolio expanded to include former Allied Domecq products:
Ballantine’s scotch;
Kahlúa coffee liqueur;
Malibu coconut-flavored rum;
Beefeater gin;
Tia Maria liqueur;
Stolichnaya vodka (distribution in the USA);
Mumm champagne;
Perrier-Jouët champagne.

Another example: Compare South Korea to North Korea … we should have finished the job there, too.
Another example: Compare the former West Germany to the former East Germany… we should have finished the job there, too at the end of WWII.
I remember seeing a picture taken while the Berlin wall was in the process of being taken down…the perspective was such that the photographer had one foot on either side of the “line” where a piece of wall had been, and the photo was looking down the line where some of the wall still existed…on one side you had modern office buildings and modern cars…on the other side you had run down buildings and old, run-down cars.
There is no question that capitalism is better for everyone than socialism/communism. Yet the Socialists/Communists are still trying to turn the USA into a more Socialist/Communist country…and amnesty for people who liked this ad is a major part of their plan…they want very much to turn millions of “low-paid working class” illegals into voting citizens.

Exactly. The rest of Mexico should pray to be conquered by the United States someday, not pine for the piece they lost a hundred years ago. Can you imagine if Texas, California, et al were still part of Mexico today? They’d be as poverty-stricken and unproductive as the rest of Mexico is. People would be trying to cross the border into Oklahoma in droves. That’s the “fantasy” Absolut was trying to tap into. Gaahh.
aero on April 7, 2008 at 4:35 PM
How, pray tell, is Absolut supposed to know that it was this ad per se that is the cause of your purported “vote with your wallet” statement. Regression testing? Astrology?
Better idea: you tell them that you’re boycotting and you tell them why.
spmat on April 7, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Hey, maybe next time, they can have a map of the Greater Third Reich on one of their ads. Absolut can then say, we meant no harm with all heck is raised. Nice argument, junior.

Michelle is all over this illegal “immigration”/Aztlan anti-American stuff like a cat on cream.
This is one of my many favorites.
Meet the open borders family: McCain, Hernandez, Soros, and the “Reform Institute”
Follow the bouncing ball with me:
Shamnesty peddler John McCain taps former Mexican government official/shamnesty advocate Juan Hernandez as his presidential campaign Hispanic Outreach Director.
Hernandez is a fellow at McCain’s “Reform Institute.” What has he been working on there for the past year?
“Dr. Juan Hernandez serves as a Senior Fellow of the Institute’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform Initiative.”
That is: Shamnesty.
Among the immigration projects at McCain’s Reform Institute: An art contest in which students depicted their protests against a southern border fence.
The grand prize winner incorporated the specious open-borders propaganda comparing our fence to keep trespassers out to the Berlin Wall designed to wall people in.
Is this what McCain believes in his heart, too? No wonder he cursed the “goddamned fence.”

Since you asked:
To achieve organic label certification, the stringent guidelines of the National Organic Program must be met. This includes proof that the grain used for making the vodka is organically grown without pesticides or herbicides. The process of producing the vodka must also be done without the use of unapproved chemicals. And the facility must be open to inspection by governing officials at all times. This is an expensive and time-consuming process that must be periodically recertified by the governing body.

I’d trust the a business tracks the effect of their ad campaigns. If they see a dramtic drop in U.S. consumption of their products, they may be able to put two adn two together.
But who cares if they figure it out or not. Their bottom line will still suffer, no?
VolMagic on April 7, 2008 at 5:08 PM
Actually, the question here is should we boycott anyone? Absolut was acquired last week by Pernod-Richard. Before that, it was part of V & S, actually part of the Swedish government. Is it really fair to blame the new owners for the actions of the old? I’m not sure. I think that I will personally only boycott Absolut. This is not like the Miller boycott, which extends to all of that company’s brands, including Pilsener-Urquel, my formerly favorite beer. So rethinking it, I don’t think I will boycott all Pernod brands.
