My superhuman task this morning; Update: The Clintons’ “unusual” tax returns

posted at 10:00 am on April 5, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Apparently, I have superpowers of which I’m unaware, at least to the folks at Good Morning America. In explaining the Clinton tax returns, the host of the show explains that the Clintons’ failure to get their tax preparation completed in time this year shows their humanity. Meanwhile, as you’re reading this, the First Mate and I will be undergoing a proctological exam getting our taxes done on time:

As far as the charity goes, the Clintons seem to have mostly relied on the proverb that it begins at home. Our friend at Power Line note that of the $109 million that the Clintons made since leaving the White House, roughly 10% went to charity — almost all of it to the their family foundation [see below for Power Line correction]. The New York Times notes that the foundation only gave away about half of that money — and almost all of it after Hillary Clinton announced her candidacy for the presidency.

Unlike some others, I am not at all troubled by the Clintons’ earning power in their post-presidency period. Bill earns plenty of money through book royalties and personal appearances, and that’s just the free market at work. I’d prefer that he continue to exploit that earning potential rather than have them return to the White House. However, with $109 million in earnings, I’d say they can afford to hire an accountant to file their taxes on time — and if it’s too difficult for the Clintons to file on time, then perhaps Hillary should be working to simplify a ridiculously Byzantine system so that the rest of us can easily work our way through the annual task, too.

Update: Scott Johnson at Power Line issues this correction:

CORRECTION: In the post above I err in attributing the Clintons’ donations to the William J. Clinton Foundation. As the Times correctly reports and as the Clinton campaign states in the quotes included in the post, the donations were rather to the Clinton Family Foundation. The foundation’s tax returns are available at the link. The beneficiaries are mainly churches, universities, medical research, and a variety of other charities. I regret the error.

Update (AP): A reader passes along a gold nugget:

Several of the older tax returns are signed and dated on the same day. For example, the Clintons’ 2004 and 2005 returns are both signed on October 14, 2007. Today, the campaign explained that several of the tax returns released today were amended, and thus were signed at later dates. Sen. Clinton’s staff blamed the couple’s tax preparers for making several errors.

A campaign spokesman said: “The Clintons amended their returns in 2003, 2004, and 2005. In 2003 the Clintons amended their return because they received a Form 1099-INT after the April 15, 2004 due date of their 2003 income tax returns. In 2004 the Clintons had to amend their filings twice. The first amended return was based on an amended letter from the Blind Trust received after the original return was filed. The second amended return was based on a clerical error that was discovered after the returns were filed. There was a math error in the original return regarding deductions, and when a new tax preparer came on board, he discovered the error and amended the return to correct it. In 2005 the Clintons had to amend their return because certain deductions were omitted from Schedule C because of a clerical error on the part of the Clintons’ accountant. When a new tax preparer came on board, he discovered the error and amended the return to correct it.”

NBC News showed the tax returns to Tom Ochsenschlager, the Vice President of Taxation at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Has been a CPA for three decades, and said all the amended returns and CPA errors stood out. “That’s unusual,” Ochsenschlager said.

Yes. Simplify the tax code.

So the first family of the Democratic party earn money and try to keep as much of their earnings as possible, just like the dirty Republicans.

Human? Could have fooled me.

Hummer53 on April 5, 2008 at 10:11 AM

The Clintons can’t even tell the truth about how their taxes are prepared. They deliberately released only a summary and only late on Friday when most reporters are leaving for the weekend. For them to claim that this is somehow due to last minute work on their taxes is absurd. I have a college friend who is in an accounting firm that caters to upper income people like the Clintons. He told me that with very high income people, taking care of their taxes is hardly something they just do at the last minute. There is annual tax planning, quarterly taxes are prepared and submitted and by the time April runs around the taxes are ready to go. He told me that with his very high end clients, they collect the financial information year round so that they can prepare for a need to submit a higher quarterly payment and lots of other things beyond my paygrade. He told me also that if the Clintons had wanted to, they could have had their taxes submitted to the IRS long before April 4 as their accountants have sophisticated software. The Clintons were not exactly sitting around with a pocket computer and a pencil with an eraser.

Larraby on April 5, 2008 at 10:13 AM

So why can’t Billary do a partial release for 2007 ?

JonRoss on April 5, 2008 at 10:15 AM

I would think that during 2007 a lot of skids were being greased. Wouldn’t be a prudent thing to do at this point I suppose.

JonRoss on April 5, 2008 at 10:19 AM

heh…I don’t understand people who wait until the last minute to do their taxes, and I’m a HUGE procrastinator. But then, I always get a nice little refund that I don’t wanna wait for. I guess if I owed, I’d wait too.

And yeah, can’t really fault the Clinton’s for making money. I just can’t imagine my taxes…TAXES…being $30 million. Just unfathomable.

JetBoy on April 5, 2008 at 10:21 AM

I think the whole idea of expecting politicians to release their tax returns at all is an abomination. It’s bad enough that law-abiding citizens have to bend over for an annual proctological exam by the IRS — in my perfect world, unless I have been involved in criminal activity, my finances are none of the government’s damn business, period. If I were running for office, they would even more certainly be none of the business of the public.

Cicero43 on April 5, 2008 at 10:22 AM

Yes. Simplify the tax code.

p40tiger on April 5, 2008 at 10:05 AM

Flat tax, anyone?

JetBoy on April 5, 2008 at 10:23 AM

But if the Clintons worked to simplify the tax code, Bubba might not be able to get a $10 deduction for each pair of underwear donated to the Salvation Army.

jgapinoy on April 5, 2008 at 10:35 AM

I’m always amazed at people who love to get “A nice little refund” of their own money. Money which they’ve loaned to the government interest free. Personally I plan to owe the government around a hundred dollars. My tax forms are always filled out at the earliest possible moment and sit on my desk waiting till the first week in April to be mailed.

I’d like to see a reform of the tax code too, but I’d like to have a little fun while we’re doing it. I’d like to have an amendment to the constitution that requires that all elected an politically appointed office holders must file their own taxes without outside assistance of any kind. Can’t even ask a friend for a hint. Any such person who could not do this or fails to file on time must immediately be removed from public office and may never hold such an office again. Either the tax code would be reduced to a post card, next week, or we could laugh ourselves silly watching our elected officials bob and weave.

…the Clintons’ failure to get their tax preparation completed in time this year shows their humanity.

Now that’s rich. MSM cracks me up.

petefrt on April 5, 2008 at 10:43 AM

When you live a lifetime feeding at the government trough, you have little or no perception of how the common folk deal with stark reality on a daily basis.

The Clintons don’t have a clue about the workings of the real world at it’s most basic levels. They live in a fishbowl, albeit one large enough for their shark-like predatorical behavior.

and am I the only one to notice the MSM has not levied their tried-and-true Price is Right trickery on either Hill or Obama? No, that’s reserved for Republican candidates. I’d bet the house neither one of them have any idea what it cost to bowl a game, rent shoes or buy a bag of potatos at the local market.

They may be “human”, but they are not us.

They are taking it out of one pocket and putting it into the other!

Sure! Gotta keep the Clinton Library going, right? What garbage! If the Democratic Party can’t see through this trailer trash, they are more blind then my grandmother!

Vntnrse on April 5, 2008 at 10:46 AM

The tax code really is made complicated and ridiculously so just to keep the entire tax profession alive, isn’t it?

Planned obsolescence may only be matched by planned inconvenience in the market place today.

Seixon on April 5, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Bill earns plenty of money through book royalties and personal appearances,

sorry, but I would like to know how much of those appearances are paid for by Oil money from outside the US.

NO single speech is worth millions of dollars, especialy by an EX President. At that level its either a Pay Back, or a Pay off… and if some of that money is then used for Hillarys campaign????

I mean, come on… paying millions of dollars to hear the Spouse of a sitting Senator who is probably going to run for President?

Hmmm… any way we can get a gander at Elder Bush’s or Carters speaking fee revenue?

Romeo13 on April 5, 2008 at 10:56 AM

Hey, it’s simple and has nothing to do with hiring a faster accountant or the complexity of the tax code. If they file for an extension, they delay the release of 2007 info into the late summer, by which time the Dem. primary is over and either she’s lost, the issue is moot, and they won’t release the 2007 return; or, she’s won and they’ll deal with any fall-out in the standard Clintonian fashion. In either case, whatever dirt may be in the 2007 return has no effect on the primary and can probably be pasted over before the general election.

BillyRuffn on April 5, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Remember how Bill Clinton griped that G.W. Bush had not raised taxes on upper income types like himself to help fund the Iraq war? Clinton said he “resented” that he was not permitted to support the troops with his tax dollars. So where is his multi-million dollar donation to a military charity? Surely a guy who wanted to support the troops so badly would have found a way to contribute, right?

AZCoyote on April 5, 2008 at 10:59 AM

I would love to know how many Billary books were bought by Chinese Clinton “donors”.

brtex on April 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM

“…the Clintons’ failure to get their tax preparation completed in time this year shows their humanity.”

Seems to me that it shows lack of proper planning. Doesn’t April 15th come at the same time each year. Do we want someone as President who can’t even manage her own household?

I see Carl Rove’s devious hand in here somewhere.

GarandFan on April 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM

how convenient…by filing an extension, they can conceal their payoffs and other dirty tricks in the past year….No doubt there will be dirt dug up on their 2007 return..which will never see the light of day because she won’t have to release cuz she won’t be President..and 10% donations are to the Klinton Foundation which probably keeps secret records so no one can find out any info about that…

Speeches over $25,000 are payoffs..influence buying..pure and simple.

daytrader on April 5, 2008 at 11:02 AM

Probably, a proctological exam would at least cost less.

Speakup on April 5, 2008 at 11:07 AM

Riiiiiiiight. Haha I love your sarcasm, AZ! I doubt Klinton wants to support the troops in any way, especially their voting.

I am rarely cynical, but the Clinton’s are so vile that the moment the returns hit the net I starting looking for yet another reason to hate and distrust them… I found 109 million more reasons. Disgusting. I still can’t believe this sociopath tricked this country into giving him the Presidency for 8 yrs. The fact that his equally evil “wife” is on the verge of getting the very same thing from us is beyond a nightmare. (My own wife refers to Hill as the Anti-Christ… and I think she actually believes it.)

Gartrip on April 5, 2008 at 11:19 AM

“…the host of the show explains that the Clintons’ failure to get their tax preparation completed in time this year shows their humanity.”

I don’t watch television; don’t have it; don’t want it. I’ve been taken by surprise at the reactions of people upon discovering this. Most consider it an odd curiosity and even some file it under “downright suspicious”.

When I read this, it struck me with fear. In an instant, I had a futuristic vision of jack-booted thugs hauling undesireables from their homes at night, while approving noses nervously peek through their windowshades lit only by the flickering light of their televisions.

Get rid of the television, wait until you’ve broken yourself from the addiction, and then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Saltysam on April 5, 2008 at 11:20 AM

The filing for an extension is really a non issue as well. The 2007 tax return could take up to 2 years to be completed. They broke up that blind trust, which isn’t a few clicks of a button and it’s done type job. There is an enormous amount of tax work involved in this type of thing. Every taxpayer, from The Captain and his First Mate to a former POTUS and his Senator wife, are afforded this option and millions of very honest taxpayers excersise that very option each and every year.

Pam on April 5, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Yeah, the extension is no big deal….lots of people do it…

But I wonder why everyone made such a big deal about them being transparent….them going ‘Sure…NO PROBLEM‘!….and then them going ‘Oh, by the way, when we do get around to telling you all about it, We’ll either be well on the way engineering the downfall of this country or REALLY hoping the people of New York weren’t paying attention during the presidential campaign so we can keep our sorry cracked asses in national politics.

BigWyo on April 5, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Finally a sign of their humanity – I was beginning to wonder.

Stephen Macklin on April 5, 2008 at 11:32 AM

Oh, the humanity!

wepeople on April 5, 2008 at 11:33 AM

Aw, rich Democrats are so human! Why don’t they just buy health insurance for all the uninsured Americans instead of sheltering their income in the “foundation”?

I have the feeling they’ll be getting lots more requests for interest free loans after this.

PattyJ on April 5, 2008 at 11:38 AM

My own wife refers to Hill as the Anti-Christ…

The anti-christ will be a man, in his 40s, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal….the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destroy everything. Is it OBAMA??

This is currently circulating the net, too.

Now according to Revelations, the anti-christ must suffer a deadly head injury, but return to life much like the way Jesus did. I suppose if he did choose Hill as his running mate, and she did try to have him assasinated as I suspect that she would….I suppose it’s highly possible, eh?

What say you HA gang??? :)

Vntnrse on April 5, 2008 at 11:42 AM

So with that $109 million dollars, do you think they’re struggling to make ends meet, like the Obamas on their paltry $1.7m?

Or maybe they don’t have to worry about childcare anymore, so no, they have no problems.

And they wonder why us little folks think of politicians as the modern ruling class.

Meryl Yourish on April 5, 2008 at 11:53 AM

I would like to know how many jobs the Clinton’s have created since 2000? That seems to be the new obligation of the wealthy. With the wealth of the Clinton’s, or say the Gore’s, I am sure they have been leading by example. I think we all realize that starting a new business is not about making a living, or even God forbid a profit, but to provide the little people with jobs. The libs are lucky, if I was a rich man, I would not worry about providing jobs. They could find my money in investments, and savings. They could find me in a tropical location, drinking vitamin C, and Vodka, while hanging out with the ladies.

chief on April 5, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Almost all of Clintons’ charitable contributions went to his own foundation?

Is this a trick Clintons learned from Gore, or Gore from Clintons? Smoke and mirrors.

Al Gore defends his extraordinary personal energy usage by telling critics he maintains a “carbon neutral” lifestyle by buying “carbon offsets,” but the company that receives his payments turns out to be partly owned and chaired by the former vice president himself.

petefrt on April 5, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Vntnrse:

Well, I said my wife believes it; I didn’t say I did. BUT, since you mentioned it, I don’t know why people think the A-C is a Muslim… Islam wasn’t invented at the time Revelation was written, and there is no mention of Islam in the New Test, so I don’t believe these pulpit know-it-alls who claim this to be true. It’s just scare-mongering. I WILL SAY that I’ve always thought it odd that Christians assume that the A-C will be male. If satan really wants to confuse us, and offer us an A-C who is truly the opposite of Christ, Son of God, then why NOT send a woman? The A-C is supposed to take us all by surprise. A female would certainly do that.

Funny thing, also, that you mentioned Hill as VP and assasination, etc… Another theory my wife has is that Hill will try to get the Veep slot so that she can use it to jockey herself into the Presidency by creating a scandal that Obama can’t recover from, then run for reelection in 2012. We think BHO understands this as well, which is why he won’t choose her, regardless of the pressure to do so from the Clintonistas.

“I’d prefer that he continue to exploit that earning potential rather than have them return to the White House.”
That’s a reasonable preference, however, it would be much more fun having them go broke trying to keep all the most damaging stories of their illustrious career from coming out of the mouths of the victims. At the very least HRC could pay her employees, including benies, and obviously, if she wants to be Prez and she can’t get her taxes aren’t in order, how can she get anything else done as POTUS?

I now seek out information from a lot of sources now and feel better educated that most of my friends that stare at the tube all day. I actually feel better connected with the world now. Quadrupled my reading time. Lost about 25 pounds because I don’t go home after work everyday and park my ass in the recliner. I recall that after Gerald Ford left office he was criticized for making paid speeches. That a president would use his term of office for personal gain was considered demeaning to the presidency. Drunk Report on April 5, 2008 at 9:09 PM

As a CPA I took a little time out to review the Clinton returns. Some interesting nuggets:

1. The loving couple lives in 2 separate households. If you take a look at their forms 8829 from 2002 to 2003 you will see her house (and land) cost $2,888k and his $1,740k. The total square footage is also different. They even have separate housing related costs like insurance, cleaning, utilities, etc. Further, stated on their 2006 return is the fact that their combined mortgages are $3,279k. It sure looks like they are still maintain separate households.

2. Why did they buy and sell a $500k condo in 2003/2004? It seems odd that they only held onto this NY unit for 7 months.

3. Schedule E page 2 is missing from their 2000 return (while Bill was still President). It should have been filed to indicate what K-1 entity gave them the $130,518 gain. Are these more cattle futures?

4. It would be interesting to know which entities paid wages to him or her in 2003 of $655,942 (includes her salary as Senator of around $150k).

5. Hillary has paid almost $1 million dollars in “Collaboration fees and expenses” for the past 7 years from her “Author” income. In fact, in 2006 she paid $124,259 or 22% of her Author income in Collaboration. How much of that book did she really write?

6. The WHOPPER of all is the income and guaranteed payments coming out of Yucaipa Global Holdings. What did someone get for $12,000,000?

Mo2Do on April 5, 2008 at 10:44 PM

The fact that the Clintons made a bundle of money does not bother me. It’s the fact that they are pretending to have released everything (like John Kerry’s military records) when they have not.

Like this from the Times:

The lack of clarity is because the Clintons released only a summary of their 2007 income, which lists $2.7 million in partnership income but does not identify sources. Based on previous years’ returns, it is likely that income came from Yucaipa.
