Get him out of power. If he wants to live in SA with his buddy Mbeki (sp?) I’m fine with that; better to let him walk than to have a civil war.

On the other hand, it would be a somewhat peaceful transition if they just loaded them all up on a jet and sent them away, never to return.

I received an email from a friend in Harare this morning, and he said things are “quiet” and that they are all waiting for a “positive” result. Doesn’t sound like much, but he really can’t say much as Mugabe implemented a policy a couple of years ago where all electronic communications were to be monitored. I know for a fact that people have been detained because they told friends in the US or the UK how things really are.

In any event, I hope they work out a deal to just make Mugabe go away. If someone can deal with him later, then so be it. In the meantime, they can begin the long process of getting the country back on it’s feet. It’s going to be a very, very long process which will require massive amounts of foreign aid.

In contemplating Mugabe’s career, one is reminded of Friedrich Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom and its chapter entitled “Why The Worst Get On Top.”

I have a Lebanise vendor (Arminian christian) who is a very smart guy and has been all over the middle east fixing copy machines for an American company. He was in Jordan in 1973 when the king hammered the palestinians. He was in Beruit during the civil war.

He does not like the war in Iraq because he thinks the muslems are not worth dying for. He respected Saddam because at least he could bring order there and he killed fewer people there than we have. He says setting up a good government there is like hearding cats.

He reccomends that we pull out, and donate millions of rounds of ammo to Iraq because he knows they will use it to kill each other like they always have and do.

He is convinced the middle east is lost because all the smart people have left. He uses Lebanon as an example. The young christians are gone, and the ignorant muslems are left. He remembers in Lebanon when the palestinians moved in that they would carry their AK 47s to the movies and go shopping. Then, when they set up camps in the city, the place turned to shit and the professional people left.

In another twenty or thirty years, when Tsvangirai needs to be ousted like Mugabe does now, if the rule is “revenge on past dictators” Tsvangirai will have every motive to hang on and kill opponents.

The problem is that simply offing Saddam would have left Iraq in the control of his sons and other baathists. Same as offing Bashar Asshat or l’il Kim. Or Mugsy. None of these people work in a vacuum. They have support groups of fanatical sycophants (a la HillaryLand) who can function in their absence. It’s not like chopping off the head of a snake, more like trying to stop Army Ants by killing them a few at a time.

If they need weapons, we should provide them, but the heavy lifting for building their democracy has to be THEIRS.

You make an excellent point, as usual, JD. Is it really worth, say, 4,000 Americans to avoid the stigma of assassinating one murderous despot? I don’t know the answer, though I have my opinion, but I wish someone in a position of authority in our government would at least ask the question.

I hope somebody’s aiming for him … with a TAZER!
