Video CGI: Airborne laser destroys scud missile

posted at 2:19 pm on April 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

I’m lifting it from Danger Room so I’ll force you to click over for the background. The big technical worry seems to be accounting for atmospheric distortions; won’t they bend a laser in transit towards a target dozens or hundreds of miles away? Not if another laser locks on first, per the video.

For the record, I didn’t start hyperventilating until they mentioned the “sweet spot.”

I wonder if we can find some way to adjust the laser to make waves in the pacific when its small…that would be nice for when its puny….like right now!!!!

SoCalInfidel on April 3, 2008 at 2:23 PM

Obama disapproves. Missiles raining down on us or our allies is a far better alternative.

lorien1973 on April 3, 2008 at 2:27 PM

Can we focus it on Rhandi Rhodes?

doufree on April 3, 2008 at 2:27 PM

And as a bonus, the missile warheads fall back on the folks that fired them…more or less.

Wind Rider on April 3, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Dude.

amerpundit on April 3, 2008 at 2:29 PM

And to think The Obamessiah wants to cut this. Or not. Depending on when you listen to him, and what he does. I sure wouldn’t trust him to not cut it in office though.

bikermailman on April 3, 2008 at 2:29 PM

Better than our virtual border fence, one hopes.

Sure we can, after all rumor has it from the Jihadists we somehow created that tsunami a couple years ago.

Liberty or Death on April 3, 2008 at 2:32 PM

And if the ABL doesn’t get it, or get them all, the Navy has proven technology that can get it in its descent phase.

bikermailman on April 3, 2008 at 2:34 PM

Awesome.

Geronimo on April 3, 2008 at 2:37 PM

Situation Awareness Display? SAD? Anywho, the system would probably shoot down missiles faster then information could be relayed over the LINK. I doubt there would be any real time target priorities given from the theater commander, they would already have their priorities when they launched, or as soon as they arrived in theater.

Rode Werk on April 3, 2008 at 2:40 PM

I was stationed at Edwards AFB. I want to know when the video game is coming out?

Never work. Too expensive.

Reparations and socialized medicine on the other hand, well, how can we afford not to do that?

And don’t forget the Global Povery Act of Obama’s.

funky chicken on April 3, 2008 at 2:52 PM

After 12 years and $3.8 billion, we may not have a ray gun-equipped jet, quite yet.

It’ll be pretty cool, if we keep the technology to ourselves.

Speakup on April 3, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Hey, this could frighten our enemies…I mean folks with different cultural values…we need to stop this right away! Signed, Obama

They say it’s better to be feared than loved. I say, is it too much to ask for both? The best weapon is one you only have to use once. That’s how America does it, and it’s worked out pretty well so far.

It might not work the first time, it might not work the second time, but this is America and we can do ANYTHING. The libs think we’ll never get it to work, but if we can put a man on the moon … oh, wait, I forgot, that was all done on a Hollywood sound stange, right libs?

AZCoyote on April 3, 2008 at 3:02 PM

If Hillary becomes president I’m sure she will want to convert the ABL to provide laser surgery for the poor under her free health care plan.

And of course Mr. B. Hussein Obama would be against the ABL because its unproven.

Maxx on April 3, 2008 at 3:04 PM

The ABL is useful insofar as it takes the PR heat as the gee-whiz component of our missile defense system. When the Dems start swinging the budget axe, it’ll be first to go, leaving the stuff we actually have fielded.

Cuffy Meigs on April 3, 2008 at 3:04 PM

Oh HEL* yeah! Unfortunately it is exactly this type of technology that we won’t see if Obama gets elected. He doesn’t want the US to ever have ‘too much’ of an advantage if someone decides they want to attack us. He’d rather use the money to spend on 3rd world countries than protecting us.

Awesome technology though. It will save lives. . . AMERICAN lives.

ThackerAgency on April 3, 2008 at 3:06 PM

Near a serene golf course, in San Clemente California, just across the fence on Camp Pendleton’s property, is where they were testing this. They would put out an announcement of “artillery practice”, but the booms weren’t artillery, but the laser blasts from the TRW facility on government property. It sounded like sonic booms echoing down the canyon, awesome. Fair warning, do not chase your dog if he happens to run onto the property. It looks like a plain deserted road leading to TRW, but it ain’t. Seems there are always marines there “doing maneuvers”, they would have no reason to protect a private company on government property…would they? Lucky to get my dog back with no bullet holes in him, and they were nice to escort me back. I have no idea where they were doing there “maneuvers”, but they were well hidden.

right2bright on April 3, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Reagan, always the dreamer…now Obama, he knows this will never work, why put the money into such a thing.

I saw that too. There’s a map at 2:30 (and I think another or so later on) that shows the airplane over southern Iraq.

drunyan8315 on April 3, 2008 at 6:33 PM

Very true. That will be a solid state laser(s), not a chemical laser. Bad to the bone.

Zorro on April 3, 2008 at 8:11 PM

If the missiles come from Mexico we’re screwed. We can’t detect anything from the South, only everywhere else in the world.

Mojave Mark on April 3, 2008 at 8:21 PM

In answer to the guy asking about putting it on tanks, it needs to pump out Megawatts of power for long enough to blow up a missile. That’s a lot of energy, probably requires a truck-sized power source filled with all kinds of nasty chemicals. Not something you can (or want to) drag around on a tank.

My concern is that it probably has trouble in cloud cover. Do SCUD missile trajectories go above the clouds?

Gaunilon on April 3, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Now that is what I call a virtual border fence! Uh, whats that smell? Is that a burning chalupa I smell? If you feel yourself getting overheated, don’t even bother rolling on the ground to put it out! Just think of all the tanners it will put out of business- bad idea!

bikermailman on April 3, 2008 at 2:29 PM

Very good point: I think he leans too friendly toward our enemies (and too unfriendly toward our military).

sanantonian on April 3, 2008 at 10:20 PM

Well, none of this ABL stuff matters.

Once Obamamessiah is elected he will audaciously restore hope and thus change America and the world will soon after swoon with love for us. Then Obamamessiah will take away all of our guns (for our own good and because love is in the air) then he will disband our evil war mongering military and then he will have his church build him a multi-million dollar house.

If you doubt any of this, then you are a racist.

Montana on April 3, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Do SCUD missile trajectories go above the clouds?

Anything called “ballistic” with a range greater than a mortar is going to go above the clouds. Way above. Like into space.

Guardian on April 3, 2008 at 6:57 PM

It has huge standoff and of course it can be fighter escorted.

Maxx on April 4, 2008 at 12:45 AM

They forgot the steps where a series of lawyers are consulted to determine legality of the attack e.g. is it an imminent threat against the US interests, the EPA is consulted for environmental impact of destroying the missile in the atmosphere over primitive countries and finally the opposition political party must be notified to prepare counter statements decrying the attack as a political opportunity and distraction from the real issues facing the country, such as the overabundance of housing and not enough illegal immigrants to be given 100% financing to own their own home.

MITX on April 4, 2008 at 7:46 AM

We should build a thousand of these backed up by land based lasers as well. War is never what you expect. When ever a nuke attack is talked about it always seems to envision 1, 2, or maybe even 15 or so nukes falling from the sky. We should prepare for hundreds of missiles raining day and night non stop. I have never believed this “first strike, second strike” thing.
If we are attacked ever, by Russia or China,, they will not allow us to have the chance to strike back.

JellyToast on April 4, 2008 at 10:26 AM

And the Left thought Reagan was just an old ‘fuddy duddy’. The sooner the left wakes up to face the worlds reality, vice their self centered idea that the world does not matter, only that you follow their rules.

My real fear is that the left will have control of such systems and wake up at 3:00 am and want to play a video game and push the wrong button on their game console.

MSGTAS on April 4, 2008 at 10:57 AM

The words that really caught my ear were “currently undergoing integration”, as in “We’ve got it working, now we’re going to load this bad boy up and put it into day-to-day use”.

Can putting this kind of firepower on a Raptor really be all that far behind?

Science fiction and science fact seem to be harder to separate all the time. If one guy writes, and a second guy says “Hey…Cool!”, you can bet that in this country a third is going to say “I can build that”.

52Ranger on April 4, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Gaunilon – ballistic tracks end up VERY high when you start to do any appreciable distance. You don’t want a flat track as you then have too much lateral speed, making it very hard to even get close to what you are aiming at. With a high angle of attack you get an apex of 1/2 or more of the lateral distance covered (45 degree angle gives you max distance, and this would be close to the minimum angle for rockets). Given that Scuds hit out past 300 km, yes they will be MUCH higher than any clouds.
