NATO endorsing missile defense?

posted at 7:55 am on April 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Missile defense turns out to be a lot less controversial in Europe than here in the US. NATO will endorse the missile-defense system that Democrats, including Barack Obama, have denigrated since its first proposal in the Reagan administration. Its adoption by NATO bolsters George Bush’s position in Europe against Vladimir Putin, who has tried to split the Western coalition by extortion and negotiation:

NATO leaders meeting in Bucharest were set to endorse a planned U.S. missile shield for Europe on Thursday, a senior U.S. official told reporters.

The final summit statement would “recognize the substantive contribution to the protection of the allies” from the missile defense system to be deployed in the Czech Republic and Poland, the official told reporters.

That will put Obama in an uncomfortable position. He called missile defense systems “unproven” and promised to cut them along with a litany of other military reductions he offered in a speech two months ago. The video went viral weeks ago, but here it is one more time:

Now that NATO intends to rely on our missile-defense system, will Obama change his tune on the supposedly “unproven” system? Will he tell NATO to pound sand? Will he tell the combined heads of Western military organizations that his judgment supercedes theirs?Obama has little experience in military matters — and this just showed how inept and naive he is.

Update: Cuffy’s got more on missile defense here.

It drives me up the wall every single time one of these yoohoo candidates gets up there and says “If elected,. I will do this…” and “If elected, I will do that…” but never never never have any of them even bothered to explain HOW they intend to work all these magnificent wonders, except to say that we will just have to elect them into office to see.

Right!

pilamaye on April 3, 2008 at 8:24 AM

That speech is one of the scariest ever by a presidential candidate and is why I can’t believe anyone will vote for him. Basically he’s saying that we should stop defending ourselves, and give all of the money we use to defend ourselves to 3rd world countries.

The missile defense shield is really the only thing that is protecting us. And as for the ‘weaponizing space’, if we don’t do it, someone else will. Remember China with their space shot at a dying satellite?

This guy is no commander in chief. He will make America weaker. . . any and every one of his ideas on how to be commander in chief will make us more vulnerable to anybody else. If he does implement any of that stuff, I WILL stop paying my taxes because if the federal government does not provide for the common defense, it does nothing to help me.

Just a bunch of quitters.

Obama will now say (in his best catch-22 phraseology), the defense system now proven, so I approve. I said, unproven, we shot a satellites down, I think that shows it is a proven system…then he adds “I didn’t tell a lie did I, that’s what I said didn’t I?”
Of course under his new system of government, it would have never been developed, let alone tested.

Watching that video makes it very clear why Obama was stupid enough to say he wants to pull all the troops out of Iraq and then only send in a strike force if Al-qaeda starts to build a base of operations.Oblivious to the fact that we have been fighting Al-qaeda in Iraq for the last 5 years from doing just that.
What do you expect from a guy who sits in the pews of a church for 20 years and says he had no idea his “mentor”,”spiritual advisor”,and member of his campaign Rev. Wright taught a racist theology and pushed bogus conspiracy claims from the pulpit.

Thanks Ed, for bringing this story to our attention and featuring the ridiculous video of Obama promising to devastate our military. Future Combat Systems and missile defense will save future lives, probably many of them military.

Obama doesn’t much care about that, obviously. Again, why would somebody who wants racial reconciliation hold the military in such disdain? The military is where you are most likely to see Americans of all races and sexes (and, yes, sexual orientations) working together successfully.

Yet more evidence, IMHO, that the race hustlers don’t really want to get to a post-racial society.

He was placed on this major committee (as an untested freshman senator) to give him international affairs credentials. His achievement so far is his bill to address world poverty by “donating” 7? 9? percent of our GNP to a Global Poverty Initiative. The committee hustled this bill through in order to get it on the floor.

N’Obama does not begin to understand the Constitution’s demands of providing for the common defense. He certainly does not belong in the White House. For that matter, he does not even belong in the Senate.
