Encore: Filipino inmates dance the pants off another pop classic

I’m just not feeling it this time. What’s the problem? The relative weakness of the tune vis-a-vis “Thriller”? The unfamiliarity of the choreography? The hack-ish, weak-ass hand-rolling gestures? When I see a violent felon dance, I want to see passion. These dudes are going through the motions. Just because Laura Branigan reeks doesn’t entitle you to phone it in, boys. Parole revoked. New sentence: An elaborate costumed pantomime to “Self-Control.”

How about too long of an intro for one? Poor camera angle for two. But mostly the mere recognizability and generational transcendence of Thriller makes this pale in comparison, I imagine.

There’s a lot of anti-Gloria sentiment in the Philippines right now (referring to their scandal-plagued president). Can she count on a lot of criminals for support?
jgapinoy on April 3, 2008 at 10:29 PM
As much of my check goes to taxes, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for prisoners to learn a choreographed dance diddy!
SouthernGent on April 3, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Allah’s been drinking a little too much tonight.

Block C, MO Medium Security Facility, Pacific MO, you have been served!

nah…boredom…
jerrytbg on April 3, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Very 2-beat, ‘quarterised’ body movements, which is what probably takes away from it
But hey, when you start trying to rush out more and more dances, the quality is going to take a hit
Reaps on April 3, 2008 at 10:43 PM
Well, I learned something tonight. I thought the song was called “Gloria.”

Omigod…this song SUCKS.
Capitana on April 3, 2008 at 11:08 PM
I don’t know, AP. I thought I saw the passion.
Jaibones on April 3, 2008 at 11:14 PM
Clearly, they need to arrest and convict a decent choreographer.
NNtrancer on April 3, 2008 at 11:22 PM
I think everyone has completely overlooked what this story is about. The prisoners are protesting using dance instead of marching (for obvious reasons) in defense of the Archbishop:
Provincial inmates dance to express anger against Lozada:
Here’s More:
And More…

nothing like an 80s dance classic with choreographed Filipino prisoners to wind down the night — I thought that was hilarious… brought a smile to my mug.
D2Boston on April 3, 2008 at 11:26 PM
And I don’t know if Allah’s been drinking or not but I understand why he posted this and entries like it. It’s a look into news and cultures different than ours (how many U.S. prisons could pull this off?) and is a break from the hard-nosed political news that we hear/see/breathe 24 hours a day.

Someone said Thriller?

Uh…I only see one of two possibilities here. Either someone has played a terrible practical joke on you by sending you here, or you have mastered a level of sarcasm that is undetectable to me.
Either way, get yourself a dozen Newcastles and enjoy yourself.

Losses a little something in the translation….. doesn’t it?
Seven Percent Solution on April 4, 2008 at 12:27 AM
Jaibones, considered this borrowed for some future thread.
You have a way with words, well written……..

Man, as if being in the slammer ain’t gay enough … here’s some lessons on how to make it gayer.

Teh Ghey!
Capitalist Infidel on April 4, 2008 at 3:51 AM
Shouldn’t it have been “Groria?”
nosliwelyk on April 4, 2008 at 4:41 AM
Way to demonstrate that you are an ignorant loser! That’s like confusing German & Italian accents. I’d recommend that you go to the Philippines to learn how they really speak (& how well most of them speak English), but that would be a punishment they don’t deserve.
jgapinoy on April 4, 2008 at 6:53 AM
CODE ORANGE

“Hey, let’s be really stupid & make fun of a reasonable comment!”
“Yes, what fun!”
jgapinoy on April 4, 2008 at 7:05 AM
I kinda wish I could move like that. I am a typical white person. :)
ctmom on April 4, 2008 at 7:11 AM
Damn, they phoned that in! One more performance like that and it’s off to Gitmo!
manfriend on April 4, 2008 at 8:11 AM
Still beats Dancing With The Stars. Fox oughta look into this…
robblefarian on April 4, 2008 at 9:12 AM
It’s the convicts’ way of saying, “President Gloria, when you’re convicted of vote-rigging & accepting bribes from the Chinese, we’ll make you feel at home here in prison.”
jgapinoy on April 4, 2008 at 9:19 AM
The song is teh ghey so teh ghey dancing accompanies.
Laddy on April 4, 2008 at 9:33 AM
I’ve read some really sad things about these prisoners, that they are forced to dance, they’re beaten if they don’t, that it is an amusement for the warden, they sometimes have to practice for 20 hours. I don’t know how much of it is true or just rumor, but it ruined the entertainment value for me.
JustTruth101 on April 4, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Can I make a request? How about they do a dance number to “Chains of Love” by Erasure or “What Have I Done To Desrve This?” by the Pet Shop Boys?
Pcoop on April 4, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I thought the guy in the orange shirt with the P on the back was especially talented.

Don’t just sit there! Call 1 (800) PHI-IDOL with your vote!
jgapinoy on April 4, 2008 at 11:02 AM
I’ve searched around the web & find no mention anywhere of the inmates being abused over this. I think they’d be eager to do it, especially after “Thriller” went viral.
jgapinoy on April 4, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Cruel and unusual punishment.
Typhonsentra on April 4, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Well, at least they weren’t dancing to “Mack the Knife” by Frank.
Wish my video wasn’t blocked here at work. Darn it!
Torch on April 4, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Or “We Gotta Get Out of this Place” by Hendricks.
When I was in jazz band in high school, we played at a prison for the inmates. The band played this song without the instructor knowing we were going to. She was very pissed when we left. The inmates loved it though.
Torch on April 4, 2008 at 11:45 AM
nah, not as good as the original.
another disappointment – Jedi Golf:
I expected a bit more =/
