Would-be bomber pinched at Orlando airport

Yeah, he has a green card.
A Jamaican planning to board a flight at Orlando International Airport was detained and questioned by FBI agents Tuesday after they found components for pipe bombs and explosive and flammable liquids in his checked luggage…
TSA searched his luggage and found “suspicious items,” according to TSA officials. Among the items seized were two galvanized pipes, end caps, two small containers of BB pellets, batteries, two containers of liquids, a laptop computer and bomb-making literature, according to an FBI statement released Tuesday night.
The interesting part isn’t the who or the what, it’s the how: It wasn’t the bag checkers who found him out but a TSA “behavioral specialist” on the lookout for suspicious behavior in the terminal. That’s a tiny, halting step towards the screening procedures used by the world’s safest airline, known for interrogating passengers at length if their appearance raises even the tiniest red flag. Some have been calling for an El Al model for U.S. security since weeks after 9/11, but anti-discrimination laws bar racial profiling of the sort the Israelis engage in and it’s unclear to me at least if we could manage their level of scrutiny given the enormous volume of American air traffic. TSA’s progressing nicely on the behavioral side, though. And to think, it only took seven years.
Admittedly, though, this one didn’t require Mossad’s finest:
Witnesses said they could tell that there was something wrong with Brown, even before he was arrested.
“He was rocking left to right, looking all crazy. I don’t know what was going on, but police came, the searched him, took off his shoes,” said one passenger.
Exit question instruction: Go on, speculate irresponsibly. You know you want to.

I wonder where his ticket would have taken him, had he not been arrested…

This is profiling and must be stopped. What would have happened on 9/11 if we profiled? The world would probably be a bit different.

OK, hypothesis time. He was a chump who has some interesting “friends.” One of those “friends” has managed to get a job in baggage handling and was waiting to get the goods to build the bomb and put it in the baggage compartment.
funky chicken on April 2, 2008 at 9:47 AM
Let’s hope all the bombers are just as stupid. And I’m waiting to read the story on page 12 where the members of his mosque vouch for him.

What an idiot!!
If you want to blow up a plane, don’t show any sign that you will.
These are the basics.

Now, now. I am of the opinion he was a loner and this is an isolated incident. No connection to any terrorism. He acted alone!!
The media will confirm my suspicions!

Interestingly AP News has some stills of him in custody.
Another question wasnt there some type of fireworks explosion at wrestlemania ?
William Amos on April 2, 2008 at 10:05 AM
I’m told he’s a Catholic member of the “Carry Bomb Materials for Peace Coalition”, and this is entirely not related to terrorist activity of any kind.
amerpundit on April 2, 2008 at 10:07 AM
It wasn’t his bag at all. It accidentally got mixed up with a bag that looked exactly like it. His bag had stolen diamonds in it, which is why he was behaving strangely. Some 90-year-old white woman in a wheelchair owned the bag with the bomb in it. If only we’d profile 90-year-old white women in wheelchairs! They’re clearly the most dangerous people in the world. That’s obviously why so many old ladies get “randomly” chosen for searches at airports and must have their knitting needles confiscated.
aero on April 2, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Personally, my humble opinion is….”For every one we catch, how many more get through?”
This guy was just there to test the system! If he’d managed to board the plane, yeah, he probably would have blown it up, but the only goal of those that sent him was to test the system!

Geronimo on April 2, 2008 at 10:09 AM
the report said his name was Kevin Brown…
I’m assuming that is his christian name.. I wonder if he still goes by that?
If it’s the behavior part of it that got him caught, it wouldn’t matter what color his skin is.. human behavior is human behavior…
not sure how that would work with someone raised in the middle east brainwashed everyday by islam… it’s not a lie if you believe it.. (George Costanza)
Also, one of the reports said he was heading to Jamaica.. is there no hardware store there he couldn’t pick up most of those items?

As we type, some mental illness advocacy group is working to launch a campaign to stop behavioral profiling on the grounds that it discriminates against those with certain types of mental illnesses.

We know he is a Jamaican national. I’ll speculate that he’s a persecuted Rastafarian and he’s really pissed that ganja is still illegal in his home country.

Brown? Muslim?
You racist. Damn the man.
Professor Blather on April 2, 2008 at 10:28 AM
In the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago are hotbeds of Islamic radicalism, but (to the best of my knowledge) Jamaica is not.
However, it’s possible that Brown is influenced by Sheikh Abdullah Faisal. He is a muslim cleric who was deported from the U.K. to Jamaica for “soliciting the murder of non-muslims”. Fox News had a story last week, U.S. Based Revolution Muslim Website Spreading Messages of Hate, which describes a website called RevolutionMuslim.com, which is a forum for the deported Sheikh.

He’s from Gatorland. He must be guilty.
Article also says:
-he’s married to a woman serving in the US Army
-his sis-in-law says he acts crazy b/c of his medicine
-she thinks the bomb was a ganja pipe (guess nobody told her about the bomb-making instructions, etc)
IreneFingIrene on April 2, 2008 at 10:31 AM
I was questioned by El Al once, flying out of Tel Aviv. The guy asked lots of questions about where I’d been and the dates I’d travelled, looking for inconsistencies I assume. He opened my bag and went through my stuff while we talked. I got the impression that he was watching my reactions more that thoroughly searching the bag itself. He was obviously highly trained and rather subtle. The whole thing took several minutes. But man did I feel extra-safe on board.

I’ve been through Israeli security and holy mackarel. It was something else. Nothing like having an Israeli picking through your undies to make you think that American airport security is crap. The Israelis were very very charming to me but I could see that they could turn right quick if they had to.

I’m not so sure. I bet there are lots of Sweedish grannies who use two galvanized pipes, end caps, two small containers of BB pellets, batteries, two containers of liquids, a laptop computer and bomb-making literature, to make those crispy bread wafers….

I speculate that the suspect is a B.Hussein.O supporter and attends Jerimiah “God Damn” Wright’s church. I further speculate that the ACLU will defend him and Al Sharpton will apologize for him. Finally, I speculate that this rasta-bomba shouldn’t have been in the country in the first place and probably has false documents to prove it.
Shawn92101 on April 2, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Why was he detained…. Its obvious that nobody told him that “bomb making materials and instructions” are not allowed in checked luggage. Have you ever seen any sign stating that bomb making materials will be confiscated in the airport?
BTW, what were the liquids. Could they have been combined to create the explosive? Otherwise, I dont think that BBs in a pipe are very explosive.
