Bill Clinton: Oh yeah, Hillary tried to join the Army

The Army? I thought it was the Marines. As did Jake Tapper, who remains inexplicably suspicious of the notion that a young McGovernite fresh out of Yale Law School whose husband was eyeing state office would decide to enlist and depart for foreign destinations unknown:
9/11 Commission Vice chair Lee Hamilton, a former member of Congress from the Hoosier state, announced that he’s backing the lanky Illinoisan.
Possibly to avoid being one-upped on Indiana national security politics, former President Bill Clinton told a crowd in Columbus, Indiana, today that his wife had tried to join the Army…
“I remember when we were young, right out of law school, she went down and tried to join the Army and they said ‘Your eyes are so bad, nobody will take you,’” he said, after heralding her record on issues of concern to the military, such as body armor and access to health care.
Hillary dated the Marines story to 1975; she and Bill graduated from Yale in 1973, which I guess is close enough for “right out of law school,” but there’s the nit to pick if you’re looking to pick one. There’s audio at the link, although damned if I can get it to play. Expect a bit of glorious follow-up to this nonsense from the suddenly Clinton-unfriendly press this week as they try to nail down just which branch it was that turned her down. (Both, maybe? As Tapper notes, the Marines story ends with the recruiter telling her to try the Army.) What’s interesting about this is what a silly unenforced error it is: The media would love to rub her face in another Tuzla-esque lie, and instead of leaving her military fish stories alone, BJ had to go and recycle this dubious item for scrutiny. Is he trying to cause problems for her? He is, isn’t he?

This an attempt to outshine McCain’s biography playing now at McCain’s site?

She actually joined and was awarded nine purple hearts. She just kept quiet on account of that famous Clinton modesty.

Bill misspoke. She visited an Army/Navy store.

What a couple of laughingstocks.
RushBaby on April 2, 2008 at 6:20 PM
This is just too much! How are we supposed to believe a committed military hater like Herself! tried to enlist? Her eyesight is so bad even the Army wouldn’t take her for JAG duty let alone the Marines!
SeniorD on April 2, 2008 at 6:20 PM
That is a crock of shit. You need good eyes to be a pilot…in the army they will just let you in and strap on the ugliest, clunkiest pair of glasses you’ve ever seen.
Dr. Manhattan on April 2, 2008 at 6:22 PM
She was photographed shopping at Old Navy
PappaMac on April 2, 2008 at 6:23 PM
‘Your eyes are so bad, nobody will take you,’” he said
I call a huge bull patty on that. Lawyers were still used extensively, who cared about eye site and the fact she wouldn’t have had to train with the men back in the day… even in the Army.
Does anyone else wonder what the deal was with those two? Did they sit down and think “Hey, lets figure out what we can say when we run for office in the coming years, to make ourselves look better!”

It was probably one of those deals where hippies would try to waste the time of a recruiter. She was probably so stoned she couldn’t remember why she walked in to the place to begin with.
pedestrian on April 2, 2008 at 6:32 PM
LOL!!! I gotta laugh at this:
Hey AP, she was a Goldwater conservative before she was a McGovernite.
Do you think maybe she still held some conservative views back then? Or is that not possible in your world view? Just curious.
Andy in Agoura Hills on April 2, 2008 at 6:33 PM
Weird – I have 20/400 vision and I managed to join up no problem.
And btw, ain’t no recruiter gonna judge from looking at a pair of glasses what someone’s eyesight is – unless things were much different in the ’70s, the military actually uses real doctors and stuff!
OTOH, if the topic was the heralding of Hillary’s efforts on behalf of the military, misdirection, obfuscation and lying is probs the way to go…

Good God will it never end with these two? What a choice that party gives . . . an habitual liar or an inept empty suit with radical racist connections.

I so want BJ to be asked what it’s like having your girlfriend go to a recruiting office, while you stay home on your fat azz and do nothing.
Buy Danish on April 2, 2008 at 6:41 PM
She was going to join the Army at Christmas but she was in Cambodia.
Wade on April 2, 2008 at 6:42 PM
PALEEZ!
These people have no shame. Have you seen the coke bottles they issue in the military? If she was able to find her way into the recruiting office there is no way they would have declined her because of her sight. Maybe as a pilot (as mentioned above) but not for the other thousands of jobs.

Should, by a miracle, or two, she be the nominee, by Nov. of this year she’ll be a “Goldwater conservative” again.

Oh, it’s possible, just not consistent with what I know of Hillary’s biography.

It wasn’t on account of her eyesight that she was rejected but for her hindsight.

What’s up AP? You tryin’ to swiftboat her? Huh, well? ‘Cause she’ll not be swiftboated! jk

In hindsight, the Army/Marines had foresight to reject her for her sight/vision.

Word is she trained to be a sniper but got confused and heard imaginary gunfire.

FTA: “Five times to my face (Richardson) said that he would never do that,” a red-faced, finger-pointing Clinton erupted.
Sure, but did he wag his finger at you on national TV, Bill?
These two are beyond a train wreck, beyond the Titanic and the iceberg – this is the asteroid wiping out the dinosaurs!

She was thinking about joining the Army but then just decided to kick Chuck Norris’ ass instead.

The Army Training would have come in handy to fend off those snipers in Bosnia.
SoulGlo on April 2, 2008 at 7:03 PM
I highly doubt if ANY member of the Clinton family even remotely considered joining the military.
And I highly doubt any branch of the military would even remotely consider accepting a Clinton.
pilamaye on April 2, 2008 at 7:06 PM
Che was recruiting at Yale?
Alden Pyle on April 2, 2008 at 7:08 PM
Just thinking about joining the army might have prepared her to dodge those sniper bullets.
Or maybe she lived through a transcendental moment and foresaw 2008: two front war, not enough troops to fight in Afghanistan, president begging NATO for help… What a nightmare- who wouldn’t try and join the army?
bayam on April 2, 2008 at 7:08 PM
This is just a joke. The two of them in 1972, hated the military. They wouldn’t go near a recruitment office unless they were protesting. Anyone who was around at the time knows the sentiment well.

He might want the divorce more than she does.

She did want to join both the Army and Marines (and the Air Force too), but she would have single-handedly destroyed global communism with such easy that the US Military realized such a powerful weapon would violate the Geneva Conventions. Not to mention put all the military-industrial complex out of work. Then Al Gore wouldn’t have been able to invent the internet.
rbj on April 2, 2008 at 7:44 PM
Here’s a thought… If military service is that important to her now, I wonder if she going to persuade Chelsea to join the Marine Corps?

1. Speaking of unenforced errors, it’s unforced errors.
2. If you had to have sex with her for approximately 26 years, wouldn’t you want to cause problems for her too?
misterpeasea on April 2, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Regardless of her truthfulness, she claimed to visit a Marine recruiter. He knows what she stated.
Why, then, would he state that she tried to join the Army? He had every reason to get the branch of services the same.
Unless he’s using the term ‘Army’ to mean ‘any branch of military service.’
However, as a former commander-in-chief for eight years, I would expect him to be more discriminating about the service branches. Unless he still doesn’t care – which would be pathetic.

This is disgusting. The Billary is just trying to pimp the military now. They are shamless.
JonRoss on April 2, 2008 at 8:09 PM
…She was going to join the Salvation Army…
Red Pill on April 2, 2008 at 8:09 PM
I admit up front that it’s none of our business, but does anyone really believe that Bill and Hillary have marital relations? I don’t. He’s been a womanizer and sexual predator for decades, and I believe the only reason she has stayed married to him is the power that it brought her. But he sure isn’t helping her upgrade her power from Senator to President.
Red Pill on April 2, 2008 at 8:14 PM
No, I would say they are not lacking on shams.
Chuck Schick on April 2, 2008 at 8:17 PM
shamless? No, they are shamfull. Sham marriage, sham sniper fire, sham National Security Advisor stealing and destroying documents, etc.
shameless? That’s more like it.
(I realize it was a typo, I’m just having a little fun with it)
Red Pill on April 2, 2008 at 8:19 PM
So, if she had been successful, BJ wouldn’t have sought “love” in all the wrong places?
Methinks WillyJ is having problems with his former Hoover nose catching up to him. Thus, the memory fizzes…
The GI Jane image does not compute. Drill sergeant (in black boots, cracking a whip) does, however…

Maybe it was, “Our eyes hurt so bad when we look at you, nobody will take you.”
That would mean that Bill just got off a few words.

franksalterego on April 2, 2008 at 9:56 PM
Somebody may have already said this but….
I remember when this was first mentioned, Hillary claiming she tried to join the Marines.
The line I remember, either from them saying it or from the media trying to cover for them, was the Marine recruiter saying her eyes were bad, and that “maybe the dogs will take you”…meaning, go try the Army (dogfaces) recruiter.
How telling it is that so many leftist wackos/politicians demean, degrade and attack the military, yet when it comes time for election, they try burnish their credentials by associating in some manner with those they demean, degrade and attack.

Good grief, AP, how many awful Hillary pictures do you have on file for threads like this? She needs to employ a stunt double or something for photographs.

“…She was going to join the Salvation Army…”
Not a chance. The Salvation Army helps needy people using money donated by caring individuals. Hillary only advances agencies that use money confiscated from “the rich” to fund programs that benefit the bureaucrats. To hell with the needy, they’ll be used again in the future to wrench more money out of taxpayers.

I thought I read somewhere that the USMC is — and has been for a long time — very generous to law school graduates because of the ongoing need for judge advocates. If I recall correctly, law grads enter the service as officers, skip basic altogether, and spend their first six months in a special military justice training program. Glasses have never been an obstacle.
Can somebody confirm this? If true, it means that Hillary not only passed up a chance to serve, but the chance to be a Marine Corps officer as well.
