Absolut Aztlan

I’m tempted to pronounce this an April Fool’s prank, but if it’s a hoax, it’s an awfully elaborate one. Is revanchist irredentism the new thing in advertising now? Dare I ask what kind of ads they’re running in the West Bank? Or, gulp, Berlin?
Exit question: Who’s up for a boycott? I prefer whiskey anyway.
Update: Patrick Ishmael fights fire with fire.

Too bad. I was an Absolut fan. No more of that for a while.
Also it’s pretty pointless to boycott unless they know why. You might consider emailing them about this. I am.

Pernod Ricard SA Buys Absolut Vodka for $8.34 Billion
Atlanta, GA 4/02/2008 05:07 PM GMT (FINDITT)
Pernod Ricard SA (EPA: RI), the French liquor company, purchased Swedish company Vin & Sprit, the maker of Absolut Vodka, for $8.34 billion on Monday.
Pernod Ricard’s bid for the Absolut Vodka maker topped that made by Fortune Brands Inc (NYSE: FO), Bacardi Ltd and Swedish private equity group EQT with investment firm Investor AB.
Pernod officials said that the company plans to keep the Cruzan Rum brand, but will sell Plymouth Gin and Fris Vodka brands. Pernod said they plan to sell Plymouth Gin within the next six months.
The joint venture between V&S and U.S. rival Fortune Brands will continue to distribute Absolut in the United States through 2012.
Absolut is the world’s fourth-largest international spirit brand behind Diageo Plc’s (NYSE: DEO) Smirnoff vodka, Bacardi rum and Diageo’s Johnnie Walker scotch.

If everything is in Spanish on that map, why would the type “In an Absolut world” be in English? This has to be a hoax…I hope.
JetBoy on April 2, 2008 at 10:41 PM
It does not show up on their web site as part of their campaigns..
http://www.absolut.com/iaaw
I even went to their Mexican site and couldn’t find it. Maybe somebody can spend some time digging around…
I also wonder if it could be the work of a local distributor (assuming it’s not an outright fraud – given the sale of the company yesterday, it could be)

They certainly got attention…if there is such a thing as “no bad publicity”. Oddly enough, Smirnoff wins the taste tests.
If you’re looking for vodka, I highly recommend Monopolowa–it’s damn good, and dirt cheap at the liquor store. And if you can find Tito’s, that’s actually made right here in Austin, Texas.

I realize there are a lot of people far more knowledgeable about reconquista than me. But frankly, I have trouble believing in the particular Aztlan version of Reconquista.
Yes, I know that high birthrates, lack of assimilation are
serious problems. Yes, even here in Illinois, I had one Hispanic gentlemen argue with me over the issue of “stolen land” in the American Southwest.
Is not what really is happening in the American Southwest an indication of this future trend and not the specific Aztlan version?
Due to John McCain’s open borders and his strong zeal for amnesty, along with the Democrat Party, we as a country have basically imported tens of millions of people who are draining our
hospitals and our social services dry.
The Mexican economy receives 20 billion dollars annually in funds sent home by illegals living in the USA. Now why would any Mexican politician want to annex large portions of the USA and risk drying up these funds?
My question is:
Isn’t the Republic of the North reconquista version a lot more realistic than the Aztlan version?
ColtsFan on April 2, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Juan in 2009, Aztlan by 2013, Mexico de todos los de America del Norte by 2017.
VinyFoxy on April 2, 2008 at 11:14 PM
You might as well get used to it. Over time Latino marketing will become the priority. It will be the biggest growth segment and after you vote for amnesty in November because the population will skyrocket. Do you even think they are telling the truth with the estimates or can even tell? We’ll find out in 2010 when the census is taken and they are all legal. I think government will put amnesty processing as a top priority before the census, plenty of contracts to go around whether Obama or McCain are elected so be sure to invest in companies that will be awarded those contracts ahead of time because wage prices will plummet, the welfare state will expand, and the middle class will be wiped out. You will need to find a way to make ends meet so be sure to invest in companies that will process amnesty applications or whatever they will call them, some kind of visa that sounds official.

If this actually is a real ad, someone needs to do up a fake one — “Absolut Confederacy” — with the 11 southern states delineated out of the rest of the U.S. map in similar fashion, and paste up copies in key locations in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, etc. The reaction from the company would be fun to watch.
jon1979 on April 2, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Roger that on the Monopolowa (not sure if that’s how it’s spelled, though). Most drinkable vodka I’ve found so far.
But my knuckles drag the ground, so whatdo I know?
If this is a hoax, somebody just cost the new owners of absolute a butt load of money and severely damaged the brand.
I live in Texas and I, (lemme see if I can get this whiny lib thing down), am OFFENDED!!!EleventyLeven1! by this ad.
Showed it to the always calm and thoughtful Mrs. B and she instantly said she’d never buy another absolute product.
Wonder what the new owners will do for damage control?
techno_barbarian on April 2, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Wow. A billboard in Mexico City. Dumb move, absolute.
Quick story about stupid ad campaigns:
When Daimler-Chrysler decided to post anti-American ads on billboards in South America, I believe it was, I was a Chrysler fan and had bought several models and was generally satisfied and thought it was wise to buy an American-made vehicle (I know parts of them come from all over).
We traded the Chrysler we were currently driving in for a Honda and I’ve been completely satisfied. We will never own another Chrysler.
The power of the purse is real power. Companies would be wise to remember that.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like this is a contest, and that design didn’t even come close to winning.
Every professional Absolut ad I’ve ever seen has incorporated the bottle shape in the design, which makes me think even less that this was sanctioned by the company.

Speaking of Vodka, after a recent trip to my local package store, I see a big sign up for “new” Hammer and Sickle Vodka, complete with the red Soviet symbol.
What’s next, Swastika Beer, Che Guevera Rum…

I live in So Cal, and have had this Aztlan crap shoved in my face since grade school in the 70’s.
The invasion is real, and that map is not only taught in Mexico, but in our “Union run, Democratic controlled, Public Schools”.
The Dems want illegals to vote for Democrats, that’s why in the 90’s, all the Social Services and Immigration and Naturalization offices were flooded with Democratic Operatives with a political agenda, and at Naturalization Ceremonies, only Democratic Voter Registration booths were allowed.
Republicans are not innocent either, the draw for cheap labor and the resulting lobby is huge.
What pisses me off is two fold.
One, that Mexico is so corrupt that I can not blame our cousins to the South to get the hell out. I just wish they would stand their ground and fight for change. It has to come from within.
Second, that these Azttlan, La Raza, and Reconquista leftist advocates have forgotten two words dear to the majority of United States Citizens hearts……. 2nd Ammendment!
Strong? Yes, but if they are willing to travel some hundreds if not thousands of miles to save their families, why don’t they not think that I would do the same?
Seven Percent Solution on April 3, 2008 at 12:37 AM
7 Percent:
Is Aztlan story realistic of the future?
I don’t know enough about this as others. But why would Mexican politicians be eager to annex tens of millions of people in the American Southwest when they reap the current financial windfall. Currently, USA taxpayers subsidize the free healthcare and social services of illegals, and these illegals then send tens of billions of dollars home to Mexico.
My question is: wouldn’t the Mexican politicians in far-away Mexico City be the very ones who are most opposed to the Aztlan concept?
But the Republic of North version of Reconquista is a bit different from Aztlan.
I am curious as to your thoughts on this matter.

Absolut just sold for 8 billion. Controversy is great for name recognition, sell the company and let the suspecting buyers who over paid for it take the hit. The French are doing just as well with Goose. Soon, the world will be conviced that the Carolinas are also a traditional Vodka haven.
THE CHOSEN ONE on April 3, 2008 at 1:20 AM

Dave Rywall on April 3, 2008 at 1:34 AM
Excellent question, let me try to take a bite…….
Start with The Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo, then jump to today.
The Mexican politicians are controlled by the Drug Cartels.
….. and it doesn’t stop there. Poor Guatemala.
Now, we have thousands, millions of these poor, under-educated people, that can’t bring all of their family north to the US, so those left behind become assest to the ruling class.
Now you have millions of foriegn nationals, working for the most part under the table, sending money back home to support loved one’s left behind, and a political party (the Left) stoking the fire.
Money is going to Mexico, et al, but our schools, hospitals, social welfare nets, housing, in States like California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, all across the country are paying the price.
Mexico, et al, are not repairing our freeways, they didn’t built them in the first place, they didn’t pay for the extra social services that we have to provide under laws, they don’t recognize illegal babies in their country, but demand that border babies get Social Security numbers and all the benefits immediately.
In fact, there are more Mexican Consulates in the Unted States than ever before.
So why would Mexican politicians opposed Aztlan?…. Because we provided the infrastructure that they can not.
Anyone been to Tijuana River lately?
Seven Percent Solution on April 3, 2008 at 1:39 AM

The Swedes must be laughing themselves silly at how preposterous that map of “greater Finland” is.
Particularly because historically it was the other way around and from what I gather, Sweden has a much larger military than Finland. (Then again, this IS Scandinavia we’re talking about. I guess “much larger” probably doesn’t mean THAT much larger!)
Even today Finland has a huge proportion of its population who are ethnic Swedes.

If you can’t comprehend the separation between multinationals and the countries they operate out of just think of all those American multinationals who are selling out the US and helping to make the reconquista possible.

However, I’m recommending to all of us who continue to believe in the importance of Sovereign borders, this is no time to become a bunch of drunken sots. Along with the Grace of God we’re going to need our wits and all of our capabilities to form up a serious, Nationalistic 3rd party and save our precious nation/preserve our present borders. Its obvious now that there is a serious threat forming.
