Maybe Rocky won — in Tuzla Flashback: Rocky endorses McCain

Hillary Clinton can’t seem to get fiction straight. Trying to rally Philadelphia voters to her banner, Hillary adopted Rocky theme of the underdog fighting against enormous odds. She forgot one thing about the movie …. its ending:

In a speech in Philadelphia today, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, will compare herself to Philly icon Rocky Balboa.

“Well, could you imagine if Rocky Balboa had gotten half way up those Art Museum steps and said, ‘Well, I guess that’s about far enough?’” Clinton will ask, according to her prepared remarks released to the press.

“Let me tell you something, when it comes to finishing the fight, Rocky and I have a lot in common,” she will tell the Pennsylvania A.F.L.-C.I.O. audience. “I never quit. I never give up. And neither do the American people.”

Um….Senator?

Rocky lost.

Wow. How many misreads does this analogy contain? Let’s walk through a few:

  1. As Jake Tapper notes, Rocky lost.
  2. The point of the movie was the dedication and belief that Rocky had to develop in himself to gain respect from others. He had to quit thinking of himself as a loser. Does anyone think that’s Hillary’s big hurdle in 2008?
  3. Not to put too fine a point on this, but the villain of the movie was a black man who had an ego problem. Nuance?
  4. Before (and after) the fight, Rocky worked as a collector for the mob. Hillary works for the …. well, hell, maybe that one does work.
  5. Rocky’s spouse was a painfully shy but virtuous woman whose love lifted Rocky up when he needed it the most. Bill … not so much.
  6. Howard Wolfson is not Mick. James Carville, maybe.

Maybe Hillary meant to invoke Rocky 5, where a brain-damaged Rocky had to beat down a punk upstart in a street fight. Barack Obama as Tommy “Machine” Gunn … Hillary can only dream.

Update: HA reader Roberto reminds us that the real Rocky (so to speak) endorsed McCain:

Maybe she’s referring to Rocky II, where Rocky fights Apollo Creed again and defeats him. 2012? Yikes.

p40tiger on April 1, 2008 at 11:15 AM

Another thought….after beating Rocky in Rocky I, Apollo Creed never wins again. Hillary may bloody Barack in the same way.

p40tiger on April 1, 2008 at 11:16 AM

a brain-damaged Rocky

Billary, 2012.

jimmer on April 1, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Sigh, has she actualy said it yet???

Wasn’t it Napoleon who said “never interupt an enemy while they are making a mistake?”

Romeo13 on April 1, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Maybe she was thinking of Bullwinkle and Rocky.

“Hey Rocky, watch me pull this election out of my (hat)?”

“Oh, Bullwinkle, that trick never works.”

NoDonkey on April 1, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Meh, this is lame. Everybody knew what she meant.

ninjapirate on April 1, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Shorter Hillary: at least I’m trying!

Seixon on April 1, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Reminds me of the sideline reporter at a football game who said the coach told the David and Goliath parable and urged his team to be Goliath.

mymanpotsandpans on April 1, 2008 at 11:30 AM

I personally think she was referencing Rocky 3, in which Rocky takes on Clubber Lang. Remember, Clubber was from Chicago…

“Prediction?…PAIN.”

And here I was thinking it was Rocky XII when we takes out the old folks home on pizza day.

SkyWatch on April 1, 2008 at 11:37 AM

Maybe she was thinking about Rocky IV, where the unbeatable boxer with an aura of inevitability rides the tides of history and proves the superiority of the New Soviet (wo)Man…

Anyone catch the new Hillary fiasco?

right2bright on April 1, 2008 at 12:03 PM

And you just know she would love to go a few rounds with Brigitte Nielsen. Who wouldn’t?

gridlock2 on April 1, 2008 at 12:04 PM

Not to put too fine a point on this, but the villain of the movie was a black man who had an ego problem. Nuance?

Not so much nuance…Creed proudly wore American flag-themed trunks.

I always had the feeling that Hillary reads EOC.

Well, she could be talking about Rocky Balboa (the last one) which has an alternate ending for those fans who want to see Rocky win!

I wonder if all the Democrats who screamed about the Popular vote count will do the same when at the end Hillary has more then Obama but he gets the nod.

Maybe Rocky won — in Tuzla

The utter pwnzrness of the headlines is 35.4% of the reason why HotAir’s my go-to place for political stuff /testimonial. Way to go Ed!

inviolet on April 1, 2008 at 12:40 PM

Maybe she refered to the latest installment, Rocky Balboa. In the theatrical cut, Rocky loses.

But on DVD there is an alternate cut – and Rocky wins. The Tuzla cut, probably.

Fictionally based politician identifies with fictional character.

“I said ‘Yo’, Bill not ‘Ho’. Calm down.”

Hening on April 1, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Ah, you have to think like HRC and her devotees think…it’s not about ‘winning’, it’s the struggle! She’s setting herself up for ‘fighting another day’ if, after she drags this fetid load all the way to the convention, she should somehow LOSE.

My reaction to the vid of McCain is hard to describe. He looks a bit like my father-in-law who is 10+ years older and a lot stiffer than John ‘Rocky’ McCain. So, thumbs up, for now…
I gotta admit, given the alturnytives, ya just hafta hold yer nose and vote fer the RINO.

And wasn’t it Napoleon Dynamite who said, “Stop eating all of my steak and ruining everybody’s life”.

srhoades on April 1, 2008 at 2:24 PM

That’s directed at Hilary, not you Romeo.

srhoades on April 1, 2008 at 2:24 PM

I bet Rocky doesn’t bowl like a girl.

Conservative_SAHM on April 1, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Not so much nuance…Creed proudly wore American flag-themed trunks.

James on April 1, 2008 at 12:21 PM

When Apollo Creed has the idea to fight a local underdog on the first day of the Bicenntenial this exchange takes place:

JERGENS
… It’s very American.

APOLLO
No, man, it’s very smart.

The trunks are just a part of his image. Creed, in the first movie, is an anti-American villain.

aengus on April 1, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Maybe she’s referring to Rocky II

Did he run up the Art Museum stairs in any movie other than the first??

MamaAJ on April 1, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Did he run up the Art Museum stairs in any movie other than the first??

I think he did in “Rocky V: The Search for Stupidity”

Maybe using the wheelchair ramp.
