The New York Post has a Hillary Clinton counterpart for Obama Girl, but it won’t generate warm fuzzies for the former First Lady. Emina Bicakcic, now a med student in Sarajevo, greeted Hillary on the tarmac in Tuzla twelve years ago. She is surprised to find herself in the middle of an American presidential race, but even more surprised at the notion that she or Hillary faced any danger during the greeting ceremony:
The Bosnian girl who famously read a poem to Hillary Rodham Clinton during her 1996 visit to the war-torn country is shocked – and her countrymen infuriated – that the former first lady claimed to have dodged sniper fire that day.
Emina Bicakcic, now 20 and studying to become a doctor, told The Post she stood on the tarmac at the air base in Tuzla, greeted Clinton and even had time to share the lines of verse she’d written – all without fear of attack from an unseen enemy.
“I was surprised when I heard this,” Bicakcic said, referring to Clinton’s assertion that she braved snipers upon landing, ducking and sprinting to military vehicles.
Other Bosnians said they had one of two reactions to Clinton’s debunked action-hero account of her visit: laughter or anger.
Bicakcic wants to remain neutral in the race, but other Bosnians interviewed by the Post aren’t as reticent. One called Hillary’s claims a “lie”, and another called it a “low blow”. They haven’t bought Hillary’s “misspoke” explanation, either. As an editor for Bosnia’s largest newspaper said, “When someone threatens your life, you don’t make a mistake.”
Apparently, Hillary thought she could get away with it. After all of her “vast right-wing conspiracy” nonsense during her husband’s administration, one could pardon her for having that impression. Now, however, with hundreds of thousands of on-line fact-checkers, the days of puffery have passed. By attempting to paint herself as a fearless crusader winging her way into hot-fire combat zones and having it reduced to a USO show arrival, Hillary has had her credibility imploded and her self-aggrandizement exposed in a sharp and unmistakable manner.
Tuzla Girl may not make YouTube singalongs, but she will continue to haunt Hillary Clinton and drag down her political ambitons.
