Tuzla Girl haunts Hillary

posted at 11:45 am on March 31, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The New York Post has a Hillary Clinton counterpart for Obama Girl, but it won’t generate warm fuzzies for the former First Lady. Emina Bicakcic, now a med student in Sarajevo, greeted Hillary on the tarmac in Tuzla twelve years ago. She is surprised to find herself in the middle of an American presidential race, but even more surprised at the notion that she or Hillary faced any danger during the greeting ceremony:

The Bosnian girl who famously read a poem to Hillary Rodham Clinton during her 1996 visit to the war-torn country is shocked – and her countrymen infuriated – that the former first lady claimed to have dodged sniper fire that day.

Emina Bicakcic, now 20 and studying to become a doctor, told The Post she stood on the tarmac at the air base in Tuzla, greeted Clinton and even had time to share the lines of verse she’d written – all without fear of attack from an unseen enemy.

“I was surprised when I heard this,” Bicakcic said, referring to Clinton’s assertion that she braved snipers upon landing, ducking and sprinting to military vehicles.

Other Bosnians said they had one of two reactions to Clinton’s debunked action-hero account of her visit: laughter or anger.

Bicakcic wants to remain neutral in the race, but other Bosnians interviewed by the Post aren’t as reticent.  One called Hillary’s claims a “lie”, and another called it a “low blow”.  They haven’t bought Hillary’s “misspoke” explanation, either.  As an editor for Bosnia’s largest newspaper said, “When someone threatens your life, you don’t make a mistake.”

Apparently, Hillary thought she could get away with it.  After all of her “vast right-wing conspiracy” nonsense during her husband’s administration, one could pardon her for having that impression.  Now, however, with hundreds of thousands of on-line fact-checkers, the days of puffery have passed.  By attempting to paint herself as a fearless crusader winging her way into hot-fire combat zones and having it reduced to a USO show arrival, Hillary has had her credibility imploded and her self-aggrandizement exposed in a sharp and unmistakable manner.

Tuzla Girl may not make YouTube singalongs, but she will continue to haunt Hillary Clinton and drag down her political ambitons.

Tuzla Girl, then ....

How dare she contradict, nay, call a liar the SMARTEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD! We know who to believe when it’s between Mrs. President Hillary Rodham Clinton and some whippersnapper little brat!

Yup. That dead horse got even more deader.

Tuzla Girl maybe the end of Queen Hillary 1. How ironic.

Tony737 on March 31, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Great choices we have aren’t they: Hillary lies, Obama lies, and McCain weasels with statements like “but that bill wouldn’t come to my desk”.

I’m excited, let me tell you.

Spirit of 1776 on March 31, 2008 at 11:51 AM

What are you saying here?

I am not to trust Hill anymore?

That tears it! I am voting republican.

Yawn. When you’re flogging the same story as Frank Rich, it may be time to drop the story:

Frank Rich does a knife job on Senator Clinton today. It’s horrible that she “lied” about being under sniper fire in Bosnia. Why would he mention that the pilot took evasive action to avoid sniper fire? Why would he mention that everyone on the plane was instructed to sit on their flak jackets to avoid sniper fire?

funky chicken on March 31, 2008 at 11:58 AM

Interesting that they can find this young woman in Tuzla but just can’t get the staff to cover the Rezko trial, or the details of Obama’s home purchase, or the Ayers/Dohrn friendship, or the rest of the Obama problems.

This story just gets better and better by the minute.

First the 3AM girl and now this. Poor Hillary. The younger generation of women are turning on her (the little ingrates)

Well, at least now Hillary can truthfully say that she has experience with international incidents.

Causing them, that is.

I know, I know-it’s traffic that keeps posts piling on when an issue is already done. Clinton lied, and was caught lying. We knew that a week ago.

Hillary got Tuzla-boated….by Sinbad the comedian, of all people.

“I want you to listen to me. I’m going to say this again: I did not have poetry readings with that girl, Miss Bicakcic. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time; never. These allegations are false, and I need to go back to work for the American people. Thank you.”

Speaking of true heroism, from the same article:

Some Bosnians contrasted Clinton’s jaunt to the truly dangerous visits paid by now-deceased former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and former Turkish Prime Minister Tansu Ciller in 1994.

In an effort to call attention to Sarajevo’s plight, the two female heads of state donned flak jackets and were driven throughout the heart of the bullet-riddled city at the height of the conflict.

Two days after their visit, 69 people were killed in a mortar attack on a central market.

Niko on March 31, 2008 at 12:40 PM

So Hillary, how’s that making the whole world love us again thingy working out for ya?

I think you can cross out Bosnia.

fogw on March 31, 2008 at 12:45 PM

At least the folks in Bosnia know shinola when they see/hear it.
In response to Niko: We know how brave Bhutto was and she paid for her courage with her life. To heck with those who think that she was as corrupt as the rest of the Pakistani pols.

First 3 AM girl, now Tuzla Girl…

Find it strange that no one who has ever met hilly supports her?

Whoops, wrong thread. All this global warming must be making me daft.

I read the article when it was posted in the “Headlines” section. I never realized taht Clinton was a hero over there, maybe now the truth will settle in and the Bosnian people will realize that they were an excuse to get Billy Jeff’s extra-marital activities off the evening news. Sucks to be used, doesn’t it Bosnia?

Hillary equates a child’s kiss with sniper fire.
Hillary succumbs to false memories.
Hillary must not become POTUS.

She was. So ‘to heck with me’ I guess.

srhoades on March 31, 2008 at 1:25 PM

Bill plays the opposite game all of the time.
It depends on what “is” is.
“Hillary is the smartest woman in the world.”
Having graduated from Harvard Law, SHE FAILED THE D.C. BAR EXAM, the easiest place in America to pass the bar, and Hillary FAILED. So it would appear that her Harvard degree is merely the outcome of paying tuition, attending class, and collecting dirt on every professor in her coursework in order to pass.

maverick muse on March 31, 2008 at 1:29 PM

Leaving aside Clinton’s lies for a moment, Chelsea Clinton would have been 17-years-old (or so) in 1996. What kind of a mom takes her teenaged daughter along on a trip so dangerous they had to duck and cover to avoid sniper fire? Brittney Spears?

Sorry, Ed. Don’t buy it. If it drags her down it’s because the media has decided that Obama is to be annointed. His transgressions are every bit as disgraceful, and in some ways more so, but he is getting a pass– at least until election day. This is not the cause of her demise, or even a serious factor in it, imo. It’s still white femininst vs. black man.

JiangxiDad on March 31, 2008 at 2:02 PM

If there weren’t photos to prove otherwise Hillary would just say this girl has obviously been traumatized and is just blacking out painful childhood memories….same goes for the Tuzla girl.

Wouldn’t it be a bloody hoot if a beautiful young woman brought down a Clinton? So many have tried, and so many have failed.

gryphon202 on March 31, 2008 at 2:23 PM

I, for one, see great courage and gallantry in that, amidst the withering fire of snipers, amidst the pinging of bullets, our Heroine took the time, at great danger to herself, to kiss a child.

OhEssYouCowboys on March 31, 2008 at 2:47 PM

She’s pretty enough that Billary better not send Billy Jeff to try and improve her, um, her, her memory.

Of course she did. When your husband, the most powerful man in the free world, commits felony perjury to a Federal Grand Jury, and then gets away with that, something like this is Bush League.

They nailed Al Capone with income tax evasion. Whatever it takes to remove the Clinton stain from our public life.

Mallard T. Drake on March 31, 2008 at 4:44 PM

Bottom line, the Clintons have tremendous audacity and no shame. The truth is not in them. They soiled the Office of the Presidency for 8 years with relative impunity.

Getting caught in a bald as$ed lie is old hat for them both.

Gee! I guess that trip was a good example of what we can expect from Hillary regarding foreign policy -laughter or anger. That pretty well describes my reaction to her foreign policy…

Having attended a few USO shows during my three tours in Viet Nam during the war, I think that an unintended slight was made to those who preformed USO shows.
