Politico: Obama lied about survey

posted at 8:05 am on March 31, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Politico has caught Barack Obama in another misstatement about his past, and this one goes right to the heart of his posing as a New Politics candidate. Working on a tip from opposition sources, Kenneth Vogel found a survey with Obama’s handwriting that he had previously denied handling. It shows that Obama himself established much more liberal positions on gun control, abortion, and other issues than he has admitted in his campaign:

During his first run for elected office, Barack Obama played a greater role than his aides now acknowledge in crafting liberal stands on gun control, the death penalty and abortion– positions that appear at odds with the more moderate image he’s projected during his presidential campaign.

The evidence comes from an amended version of an Illinois voter group’s detailed questionnaire, filed under his name during his 1996 bid for a state Senate seat.

Late last year, in response to a Politico story about Obama’s answers to the original questionnaire, his aides said he “never saw or approved” the questionnaire.

They asserted the responses were filled out by a campaign aide who “unintentionally mischaracterize(d) his position.”

But a Politico examination determined that Obama was actually interviewed about the issues on the questionnaire by the liberal Chicago non-profit group that issued it. And it found that Obama – the day after sitting for the interview – filed an amended version of the questionnaire, which appears to contain Obama’s own handwritten notes adding to one answer.

In 1996, Obama ran as a political unknown, although one with friends in high places — friends like Tony Rezko, William Ayers, and Bernadette Dohrn. He wanted the endorsement of Independent Voters of Illinois, a group in which he and his campaign manager had worked in the past. The survey was an important part of IVI’s vetting process, and Obama needed to make sure that it had the answers he needed for the endorsement.

So what were Obama’s positions in 1996, according to the questionnaire that bears his handwriting?

  • Opposed to parental notification on abortions. He amended this to say that he might possibly support it for 12- or 13-year-olds, but no older.
  • Flatly opposed the death penalty, a position he denied ever having.
  • Supported bans on the sale, possession, and manufacture of guns, again a position he denied ever taking.

Those positions won’t even fly with a large number of Democrats, let alone in a general election. The Hillary Clinton campaign has already begun making the argument to superdelegates that Obama holds extremist views so out of touch with the American electorate that he can’t possibly win in November. The questionnaire will bolster that argument, especially on guns, where the Democrats had tried to soften their stance since Al Gore lost his home state of Tennessee in 2000.

The Obama campaign’s response to Politico has to be read to be believed:

Through an aide, Obama, who won the group’s endorsement as well as the statehouse seat, did not dispute that the handwriting was his. But he contended it doesn’t prove he completed, approved – or even read – the latter questionnaire.

“Sen. Obama didn’t fill out these state Senate questionnaires – a staffer did – and there are several answers that didn’t reflect his views then or now,” said Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for Obama’s campaign, in an emailed statement. “He may have jotted some notes on the front page of the questionnaire at the meeting, but that doesn’t change the fact that some answers didn’t reflect his views. His eleven years in public office do.”

This makes no sense at all. If Obama’s handwriting is on the survey, then he filled it out. If the answers didn’t reflect his views, why didn’t he change them when he “jotted some notes” on it? If the answers were wrong, Obama would have “jotted some notes” to that effect, rather than allow such mistakes to get transmitted to IVI. And the “eleven years in public office” defense might make sense if Obama hadn’t spent much of that time voting “present” instead of taking actual stands.

Once again, we have more evidence that Obama represents nothing more than the political winds. He has zero credibility, zero experience, and a penchant for telling people what they want to hear rather than any truth about what he actually believes. Either he lied to IVI or he’s lying now. In either case, it’s hardly the New Politics Obama has promised.

HE should just use the “Wright” wing conspiracy defense: I may have been present, but I had no idea this was going on. Obviously someone is trying to destroy his political aspirations by pointing out the strong left-leaning positions he held less than 10 years ago.

Hear lies. Opposition candidate uses those lies to bolster her own campaign.

His next line of defense will be that he didn’t know what he was filling out, which will make his judgement questionable AGAIN. Either way, he’s a liar only a democrat primary voter could love.

Obama sure doesn’t know much about anything in his past. It’s like a soap opera where the character has amnesia for 20 years.

This should matter but it won’t. The press won’t report it, except with the usual fawning about how the US of KKK A is so lucky to have Obama deign to come down from heaven to save us all.

Then Obama will go on The View or Olbermann and have a big laugh about it. The joke will be on us.

Gilda on March 31, 2008 at 9:05 AM

Make no mistake about it: Obama’s policies are DANGEROUS. We’ve seen a glimpse of this in his long term associations with bigoted spiritual affiliations. He is fiercely pro-choice and opposes a ban on partial birth abortion as an attempt to roll back abortion rights.

He also likes to joke that if men had any sense, they’d support aborton on demand becuase of how it benefits them. Ha, ha. He is an abortion Nazi.

Hillary is far more reasonable and would make a better president. Not a good one, but better than Obama.

Here is a video I found of Barack Obama and I had to share it. Obama shares his military plan in this video and it is downright scary. He talks about cutting investments in missile defense systems, and most disturbing to me, talks about slowing the development of future combat systems. He also shares his view that is frightening in it’s naivety of a goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

Anyone who hasn’t watched this short (less than a minute) video really needs to do so. And please post it in response to the “McCain is just as liberal” fools.

I hope the IVI group loudly and publicly withdraws its support of Obama in any present or future political race. He just betrayed them big time, admitting that he blatantly lied (or let a staffer lie) to them to get their endorsement. Perhaps without them, he wouldn’t be a U.S. Senator today, and would not be in any position to be running for president. They should be very angry that he was either lying then or is lying now–either one of which represents a betrayal to them and their ideals.

Take him down, IVI!

Liar! Liar! Pants on fire!

Really no surprise here…I’ve observed that most things that Democrats say have to be turn around 180 degrees in order to be true.

On a separate but related note, I’ve observed that Democrats usually accuse Republicans of the wrongdoing of which they themselves (the Democrats) are guiltly of. Why? Because the best defense is a good offense. If a Dem accuses you of something, and you say, “No, it is you who is guilty of that”, it looks like you are being childish and saying, in effect, “I know you are, but what am I?” Very interesting strategy on the part of the Dems…wasn’t it Carville who said that Republicans have a hard time responding when a Democrat has a fist in their face?

In my opinion, no one twists the truth into a lie better than John Edwards.

Through an aide, Obama, who won the group’s endorsement as well as the statehouse seat, did not dispute that the handwriting was his. But he contended it doesn’t prove he completed, approved – or even read – the latter questionnaire.

Let me see if I understand how this works:

If Obama ever becomes president, and we find his signature in his own handwriting on a bill, we’re not allowed to assume that he actually signed it into law, or even read it??

Sounds like a great boon for the lawyers, and great misery for everyone else!

The poisonous campaign of Barack Obama
If I ever reflect on how it is that I went from being a huge fan of Obama’s, to a person who was excited about him and waiting to hear his plans, to wondering why I was not hearing anything tangible, to coming to terms with that fact he had no intention of clarifying anything, to coming to understand that he was a shallow pretender, to loathing everything his campaign represents – I will look no further than this email I received today from an Obamite:

let me guess with all respect,
– you are below college education. thats for sure. right?
– you have a working class background. thats also for sure. right?
– you are not interested in politics. thats possible. right?
– you prefer to eat cheese stakes at geno’s. thats also possible. right?
– your are just a bad bad-boy who likes to play mind games. maybe. right?
have a nice day

I loath these people. I will vote for McCain or no one if Obama gets the nomination. Not because every one of these assumptions is wrong about me. I have a BFA, come from a middle class background, am obsessed with politics, and am a bad boy but not a “bad bad” boy. (A cheese “stake” would be a bizarre and pointless item so I have no use for it, but I do like a cheese steak every now and again).
I will vote for McCain or not at all because of the dripping, oozing condescension that Obamites have for those without college degrees. Because of the high end, fraudulent contempt Obamites have for the working class. Because I do not want to sit through another 4 years of an administration populated by those who think “cheese steak” consumers are less than equal partners in a democracy. I don’t give a flying crap where the prigs land on the Left/Right scale.

By lying overtly and covertly about who he is Obama has poisoned this campaign and this country. He has used his considerable talents as an orator to fool the chattering classes and the media. He has used skillful oratory to blur his questionable past, rewrite our recent history, and open another gash in the wound of race in America. He has taken the difficult issue of race and turned it into a Benetton commercial and wonders why Pennsylvania isn’t buying it. He breathlessly compares his grandmother to the putrid Wright and wonders why his grand “speech” didn’t take.

Either he lied to IVI or he’s lying now. In either case, it’s hardly the New Politics Obama has promised.

Captain, that’s PC convoluted logic nObama’s camp displayed. Reject problems and they disappear so far as the rejector is concerned. Your argument shows there are no “New Politics” for nObama or anyone to usher; just more sex, lies and records.

Hillary also has no foot to stand on with her lack of logic. Either she admits her lie, not a “mis-statement”, or she proves herself a liar whose only possible defense is no defense. That she absorbed the female R-Senator from Maine’s account as her own just as fraudulently as people creating “memories” from the power of suggestion only proves her mental disorder and disqualification for POTUS.

This is not to say that we have no contention along the lines of “honesty” or our nation’s best interest with McCain. Where is his Senatorial leadership and POTUS platform SECURING OUR BORDERS AS WE SPEAK while Bush is pulling the greatest socialist coup on America since Woodrow Wilson implimentation of US governmental fascism, obliterating the Constitution in his day and retarding our ability to reinstate conservative rights of individual American citizens. What a banking fraud we have on our hands right now, and the more we do to cover up these wounds from greed, the greater the ensuing infection. With Bush, in order to secure a RINO victory, there is no CLEANSING as required by law and logic happening except to flush our attention down the misdirection tubes as we march into socialism paid by Bush’s taxpayers. For a few hundred dollar bribe, providing you fill out the paperwork, we’re going to be made to feel so much better–NOT.

All of these politicians have us stuck between a rock and a hard place. We have no remaining champion. Yeah, choose the lesser of two weavils. The storyline may have different timbres, but the plot is the same.

What amazes the observer is how the INCREASE in communications has only promoted propaganda to mute intelligence, using convoluted PC serial techniques to stoke the media. But as Pierre Boulez finally wrote for all those serioso musician frauds to recognize in their mirrored listening dirge experience, “Schoenberg Is Dead”. Those who followed his serial dead-end “mis-spoke” their claim for creating THE NEW tonality introduced as “atonality” before winding off into oblivion and beyond. Children knew better. What a waste, an entire century of lives and creative directions destroyed in order to enforce the worship of dead-end. Chromaticism won, particularly having colored each tone with its neighbors, then equalizing recognition of a tone as its neighbors during the musical activity, but honing in to the core by the end. E pluribus unum has its centrist musical expression in Bartok’s compositional adventures, a classicist in formal structure regardless of avant-garde tonal flavor.

Shake-off the shackles of progressive political maneuvers. The ability to lie is not impressive. Liars are oppressive. No matter a liar’s promise or party, we live to regret political progressives, regardless of party packaging or tonal flavor. In the end, it’s all about them getting MORE POWER to literally dominate everyone. Like a Mormon Lucifer enforcer, PC revisionists would extricate all traditions and historical records in order to re-create the world in their own image. These progressives play both god as faux creators and Adam as verbal definer of objects. You may never express yourself in contradiction to THEIR idea, act, plot, goal, motion, structure or music.

You and I are completely expendable to the degree that we fail to impede the progressive assumption of power. Nonethe less, we think, therefore we are. We certainly are no less than anyone. We TAXPAYING CITIZENS are everything at this moment to the GOP. Do not fold your hand before your border security is done.

TexasJew on March 31, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Wow. I hadn’t read this Ed Koch article. It’s awesome start to finish:

March 25, 2008
Why Obama’s Speech Was Unconvincing
By Ed Koch

Rev. Wright’s sermons charge that the U.S. government gives African-Americans drugs, created AIDS and is deliberately infecting blacks with that disease. His sermons claim that the U.S. unjustifiably nuclear bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II, and that 9/11 and the deaths of 3,000 Americans were caused by U.S. foreign policy. He alleges Israeli state terrorism against the Palestinians; calling Israel a “dirty word” and “racist country.” He blames Israel for 9/11 and supports the divestment campaign against it, denouncing “Zionism.” His venomous thoughts are summed up in his most discussed sermon in which he says the U.S. government “wants us to sing God Bless America. No, no, not God Bless America. God damn America. God damn America for killing innocent people.”

Senator Obama in his speech acknowledged that the rantings of his minister are “inexcusable,” but stated, “I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.”

Before we discuss his grandmother, let’s examine the impact of Rev. Wright’s statements on the Senator’s two daughters. Nothing says it better than a song from the musical “South Pacific,” to wit, “You have to be taught to hate and fear…You’ve got to be carefully taught.” Few dispute that Rev. Wright’s sermons are filled with hate.

It is also disturbing to me that Obama’s wife, Michelle, during a speech in Wisconsin last month, said, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”

Strange. This is a woman who has had a good life, with opportunities few whites or blacks have been given. When she entered Princeton and Harvard and later became a partner in a prestigious law firm, didn’t she feel proud to be an American? When she and the Senator bought their new home, was there no feeling of accomplishment and pride in being a U.S. citizen? When her husband was elected to the state legislature and subsequently to the United States Senate, didn’t she feel proud of her country?

Anyone who hasn’t watched this short (less than a minute) video really needs to do so. And please post it in response to the “McCain is just as liberal” fools.

With apologies to Roger Daltry, meet the new politics … same as the old politics.

Oh come on, you guys are getting this all wrong. It’s not about his integrity – when he fills out a questionnaire without reading it properly or understanding what it’s saying, he’s not lying or pandering. He’s merely trying to establish more appeal and bond with the voters in Florida…

ErikTheRed on March 31, 2008 at 12:18 PM

I haven’t heard Rush today, but Obama is making it so easy for Clinton, Rush might have to switch Operation Chaos to help Obama get back on his feet for a few more months. Vote Obama!

Doug on March 31, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Thank you Capt.Ed. Democrats are liars it must be a part of their DNA. ( Bill and Hillary Clinton, Kerry, Kennedy, Obama, etc.)

Wild Thing on March 31, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Hillary’s too conservative for Obama to put on POTUS. Really, think about that for a while.

funky chicken on March 31, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Positioning themselves in the middle, with a wink and a nod, to try and catch a few votes…it won’t work, your a liar.

Excellent, Gilda!
mikeyboss on March 31, 2008 at 9:42 AM

I’m not the only one who’s noticed this, either. Here’s a great Michael Ramirez cartoon of Rip Van Obama.

Obama’s either a dumb honest guy or he’s a smart lying one.

Gilda on March 31, 2008 at 12:43 PM

This is awesome because Hillary ain’t goin’ nowhere… and she will pummel him with this type of information, creating more angst in the Democratic party right through the summer… have at it, boys and girls!

D2Boston on March 31, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Heard about this on Fox this morning. The guy is shameless.

baldilocks on March 31, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Why hasn’t this lie come out before? Why did it take opposition research? For that matter, why did it take the opposition so long to find this?

secretfire on March 31, 2008 at 12:56 PM

I hope I’m dreaming; this year seems so unreal.

Not only are the Dems close to nominating a real socialist who has been trying to hide his colours, (and the Dems have let him), but a REPUBLICAN administration is considering nationalising banks and has already been bailing out failed lending institutions with irresponsible lending practices.

This is one hell of a nightmare. When do we get to wake up?

linlithgow on March 31, 2008 at 1:07 PM

Either he lied to IVI or he’s lying now.

Not necessarily true–he could have been lying both times.

This suit is not only empty, it’s transparent.

Oops! I guess that N’Obama didn’t quite delete all in his non-existent paper trail. O Bummer!

Saw Funky Chicken’s video. Does he want Washington to be the capital of the Caliphate?

snaggletoothie on March 31, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Is there a map room in the Obama/Rezco mansion? Maybe it’s time for a new version of the Harper Brothers Clue board game, updated with things like Mrs. Obama in the conservatory with the shredder.

As for his 11 years of experience, maybe he can let Judicial Watch know where the records are.

Buy Danish on March 31, 2008 at 3:53 PM

I don’t know if there’s a map room in the Obama mansion, but there’s a 1,000-bottle wine cellar. Probably some good hiding places in there. If not, he can always send the incriminating paperwork over to Wright’s mansion (assuming the messenger is allowed through the gates); it’s so big, nobody would ever find anything in there.

Man it must suck to be such poor, oppressed black folks! No wonder they hate this country so much.
