LiveLeak pulls “Fitna” after receiving “very serious” threats

“In the end the price was too high.”

Update: I haven’t tried the torrents here but you’re welcome to if you haven’t seen the film yet.

Update: Don’t worry, the film’s still around. Google Video has it for the moment and I hear that it’s up and down on YouTube too. When all else fails, just search for “fitna” and “torrent” and all should be well. They don’t call it “viral video” for nothing: Once it’s released into the population, you can never quite stamp it out. LiveLeak did its job for as long as it needed to.

Update: Readers are adding links in the comments to other downloadable versions. Get your copy today.

Utah Boy on March 28, 2008 at 4:49 PM

The fact that it left people who actually watched it “underwhelmed” sort of shows that the main point to it was not its content but to see what its reception would be. Also, note that Liveleak blames “ill informed reports from certain corners of the British media that could directly lead to the harm of some of our staff.” Why does the nation with which we have our “special relationship” seem worse than the so-called “axis of weasels” when it comes to Western values such as freedom of association and religion (in the UK), freedom of speech (worldwide, and not only in this instance), and law and order (in Iraq)?

calbear on March 28, 2008 at 4:50 PM

This situation is just SICK. The footage Geert Wilders used in Fitna is readily available for anyone to access and already exists. In fact much of the footage Muslims are familiar with and are the cause of the existence of the footage itself, they produced the material and it is rather silly of them to now have issues with the footage since they did it themselves.

The fact that Geert Wilders compiled the footage together with quotes from the Quran (which are readily available to anyone who wants to open the book) and other news footage that we have already seen before, the controversy of this film is rather bewildering!

What did Geert Wilders do that is so offensive and criminal?

All he did was compile readily available footage into one video. Interesting, eh?!

ketket on March 28, 2008 at 4:50 PM

All the more reason to register every single Muslim in America. Put every single mosque on notice that they are being watched and listened to. And deport every single Muslim who daily manners consist of the sort of thing found on RevolutionMuslim. com

letget on March 28, 2008 at 4:52 PM

And the terrorists see no irony in the fact that in their outrage over being depicted as murderers, they threaten to murder anyone who suggests such a thing. I don’t know much about Wilders and his extended viewpoint, but as far as his film, I didn’t think Fitna showed or said anything that hasn’t been said anywhere else.

We can’t let this just go away. Liveleak may no longer host it, but those who downloaded it should seed it everywhere they can. We lost one small battle with LL, but they shouldn’t be allowed to succeed in silencing the film on the net.

At some point, this whole free speech issue is going to spark some major physical confrontation with the Muslim world in a location not presently involved in such. I don’t think the principle is going to be given up that easily by the free world. I don’t know when, where, or how, but at some point a tipping point will be reached and it won’t just be a few courageous souls under threat from the jihadists, but a major backlash washing over the censors. Once that point is reached, I’m afraid some ugly things ae going to happen, and probably to innocents who happen to get in the way. Perhaps that is what the Islamists are trying to provoke, but once started it will be hard to extinguish. It seems inevitable at the present pace.

When you’re getting death threats and your employees are threatened with harm, I don’t blame LiveLeak for pulling it. But as said, they DID host it when no one else would.

And as AP pointed out, it was up long enough to do the job. There are now copies all over the web.

My hat’s off to LiveLeak.

JetBoy on March 28, 2008 at 5:04 PM

If this isn’t an full on assault against free speech, then I don’t know what is.

Kini on March 28, 2008 at 5:05 PM

calbear on March 28, 2008 at 4:50 PM

Agreed. As I said, the film itself was nothing new and a bit of a damp squib. The ’story’ is the degree to which the west is now cowed as bit by bit, all opposition to Islam is snuffed out. This is what is truly terrifying.

On balance I say kudos to LiveLeak for having the balls to show this at all. It is easy for us to sit in our houses typing and whining about how this and that person is a ‘coward’ but frankly, I have not yet had a personal threat of violence against me and I’m not about to criticise someone else who feels the price is too high for them. They did the right thing for as long as they felt they could and I applaud them.

schiehallion on March 28, 2008 at 5:07 PM

Don’t blame LiveLeak. I would have done the same thing.

malan89 on March 28, 2008 at 5:08 PM

Not a good development.

Wilders has had the jihadis make his point for him and this thing is seeded as a torrent all over the net.

Once the Jihadis work out decentralised communications protocols then freedom of speech will be dead.

Given their general technical cluelessness I think that’s not likely.

Ares on March 28, 2008 at 5:10 PM

Are the threats being followed up, I wonder? There s/b consequences against that.

Entelechy on March 28, 2008 at 5:11 PM

malan89 on March 28, 2008 at 5:08 PM

inviolet on March 28, 2008 at 5:12 PM

Reporters around the world s/b on top of this, in support of free speech. Let’s see how they handle it.

Entelechy on March 28, 2008 at 5:13 PM

Now is a good time to take a few minutes and read Dan Simmon’s story of the Time Traveler. We’re going to be at war a long time, and people in the future are going to look back – just as we look at Chamberlain and others – and wonder why on earth we were so slow to understand what was happening not just around us, but TO us.

Laura on March 28, 2008 at 5:14 PM

Y’all who are bashing Liveleak need to stop and think for a moment. Without knowing the exact nature of the threats, you’ve got no idea what you’re talking about. Employers do have a level of responsibility for the safety of their employees.

flipflop on March 28, 2008 at 5:14 PM

And now that the terrorists have made Wilders’ point for him (didn’t take long, did it), the video has fully done its job.

Amazing to me how appallingly stupid the jihadists are. You’d think they wouldn’t be so brainless as to – about 24 hours later no less – completely prove the depiction they’re protesting against.

inviolet on March 28, 2008 at 5:15 PM

I said something similar over at Ace. Liveleak tried but they were stabbed in the back by British media. They stood up for freedom of speech instead of bowing to the alter of PC leftism. So what did the press do? Tried to intimidate them and/or get them murdered.

The press is scum. They are no better than drug pushers. A real shameful job they’ve chosen. I hear there is a certain spot in hell where traitors burn. Enjoy it, rats.

ZRyan on March 28, 2008 at 5:16 PM

I wouldn’t call LiveLeak cowards just yet. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they received threats of violence against their offices or employees. I can totally sympathize that they wouldn’t want to weigh that against the maintaining of a single video.

Active personnel isn’t even 1/2 of 1% I think. I am thankful for every person who does make the choice to use their life in that manner, and for the risk they take in doing so.

In all respects, as has briefly been touched on in second amendment threads, I think you’ll find there are a lot more reservist patriots who will be ready to risk their lives if real government crackdown begins, and they won’t be wearing uniforms. While I respect every soldier, I think there are plenty of Americans who would take the initiative if the opportunity presented itself.

If any of LiveLeak’s employees were aware of what this movie was, they knew the potential consequences, and did it anyway. I hold that in high regard as well. However, just as there would be no benefit in a lone soldier rushing impossible odds at the risk of his life, there would be no benefit to an organization like LiveLeak losing lives over a single video. There will be others.

I have respect for those who fight for our freedom. I don’t though have respect for someone who would fight for freedom but then make the case that only those who have fought have actually earned the right to say anything.

The whole point of this is that no one should shut up. Free speech is a precious thing, but it’s up to the individual to decide if he/she wants to die for it. And a company shouldn’t make that decision for its staff. Live Leak wasn’t just covering its own butt. It had many other people to consider.

What is with all of you denouncing Live Leak over this?

It’s just a video, and as many have already said, it’s not even the best of its kind out there. If Live Leak doesn’t want to risk the lives of its staff, then it shouldn’t have to do so.

Can one single radical Islamic extremist stop for a moment to tell us exactly what is wrong or inaccurate within the Fitna video? Were some of the Koran excerpts improperly translated? Are they upset that Western music was used? Are they hurt because the clips stopped short of seeing the actual decapitations taking place? Were they looking for their names in the credits?

The video is accurate. The events are real. Much of the video was produced by these maniacs. The headlines are real.

Patrick Henry’s quote means a little bit more to us today, doesn’t it?

He had the bravery to say that he would rather give up his life than give up his freedom.

We have been “the Land of the Free” precisely because we have been “the home of the Brave”.

As for fear of threats, here’s what works for me:

No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the LORD.

Isaiah 54:17 (New King James Version)

No weapon formed against me shall prosper, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Jesus is Lord.
