I thought it was just my connection but Flip’s having precisely the same problem. Is this just a New York City thing or is something wider going on?

I can’t get to many sites. Not even Craig’s list. I thought it might be a doubleclick/google/etc server down but those sites appear to be working.

I can’t even load Google.

I’m in San Jose; I checked Google and my spam-catcher Yahoo Mail account, two of the sites that Flip mentions, and both seem to load fine.

I’m in Seattle and everything works fine. Just checked Google availability and it’s fast as ever.

I can get in everything but at home I was having issues about 2 weeks ago. I found out there is this thing on Microsoft download that if you didn’t dump your cookies and EVERYTHING once a day you couldn’t do ANYTHING.
Try dumping your cookies and see how long it takes. If it is that, see if you can do a microsoft update and it should solve it.

It’s got to be a NYC thing. Although it’s weird that even Flip’s Blackberry is down.
Allahpundit on March 28, 2008 at 8:11 PM
Not here buddy.
Maybe Al Gore pulled the plug on your area.
Remember, congestion is another problem. Traffic jam is everywhere especially if you’re dealing with tubes.
“I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o’clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?
Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially…
They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It’s not a truck.
It’s a series of tubes.
And if you don’t understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material. ”
- Senator Ted Stevens, R-Alaska

It usually takes me about two minutes - less if I have a couple of beers with the cookies.
RedWinged Blackbird on March 28, 2008 at 8:12 PM
I got an email at work today that AT&T was doing major upgrades across the USA and to expect service interruptions this Saturday and Sunday. Not sure if it’s related…?

HA! This is funny. I was just saying the same thing to my wife this morning. Everything is slow, sometimes it doesn’t load, etc. I have a new computer, with pentium dual-core, and DSL. I told her that it was a conspiracy by ATT to get us to switch to broadband. Good to know I’m not the only one to have noticed a rapid slowdown. And my wife and I clear cookies after every time we’re on the net.

But seriously, there may be some DNS servers getting hit hard by DOS attacks. If someone succeeded in that, it could make the a world of hurt. AP - have you tried browsing by ip?
Google http://64.233.167.99/
Yahoo Mail http://69.147.112.160
If you can reach those sites via ip, there are some DNS problems. Change your DNS ip to one that is working.
I can reach all said sites. I am using OpenDNS :
208.67.222.222
208.67.222.220
lsutiger on March 28, 2008 at 8:39 PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_tap
A technical tap, also known as percussive maintenance or percussion therapy, is a term used to describe hitting a malfunctioning device in order to make it work correctly again.

Things are working fine in PA far as I can tell…NYC thing?
doubleplusundead on March 28, 2008 at 8:40 PM
It’s not just a New York thing. Problems all over, NW, SW, and it’s selective. Just tried a link from headlines on HA, and Politico doesn’t open.
Entelechy on March 28, 2008 at 8:41 PM
That was a good one!
Dork B. on March 28, 2008 at 8:41 PM
This is normal.
The companies that control the “internet” have technical issues too. Many times Hotair will not load correctly, gmail won’t load correctly, etc.
It is normal, I promise. After about 3:30PM EST the internet gets bogged down with people leaving work or getting home and hitting the web. If a link goes down the traffic has to be routed elsewhere and that can cause delays in servers that are located near the bad section of the internet.
To prevent this the internet has to be treated as a utility. Instead of the information super highway the internet should be treated as a real highway and the federal governement needs to lay a nationwide fiber optic backbone network. Japan streams HDTV that does not happen by accident. We ought to have a backbone to support the growth in the internet.
There is hope. Super duper highspeed networks are possible.

Chakra Hammer on March 28, 2008 at 8:42 PM

It’s your nickname: Allah
Change it to something like:
Jihadpundit
Infidelpundit
Crusaderpundit
Don’t associate the name ‘Allah’ with punditry.
May Allah pee on you and throw buckets of beheaded rotten goats on your head and all the Infidels who curse Muhammad and his Allah.
By the way, have you listened to the latest song by the Egyptian female singer: Awana Suka Dika?
For some reason, she’s very loved in Saudi Arabia.
Indy Conservative on March 28, 2008 at 8:43 PM
AP
Put this in you address bar and see if you can get to Google
http://209.85.173.103/
If you can, you’re having a DNS problem (which I supect since you are still able to get here)
If that’s the case, go to opendns and follow the instructions to change your dns until your provider gets their problem fixed.

Carbon mysteriously linked to signal attenuation in networks across America. Al Gore posits that some sort of tax might be used to control the unruly internet, which he never intended to get so wily.

STOP! Attention all internet users. Remain calm. This is Hillary Rodham Clinton. If you are an Obama superdelegate, you MUST push away from your internet console, NOW — SLOWLY! Just put the keyboard and mouse down and no one will get hurt. Get up from your desk now, with your hands in the air, and walk slowly to the exit of your building. Remain standing outdoors until you receive further instructions.
