Too bad to check: McCain blocked House border enforcement bill?
posted at 2:18 pm on March 27, 2008 by Allahpundit
What? No, no, he’s … learned his lesson. He gets it now. He’s an enforcer. He wouldn’t let us down again, not after those very sincere compliments he paid us at CPAC.
Would he?
U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler says he believes Republican presidential candidate John McCain blocked his immigration bill from getting a vote on the U.S. House floor. McCain’s staff denies it.
The Waynesville Democrat spoke to the Rotary Club of Hendersonville on Tuesday. He said the Republican leadership tried to bring the Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement Act to the House floor. They used a provision of House rules called a discharge petition, in which a simple majority can bring to the floor a bill that is stuck in committee.
The petition had 181 of the 217 signatures needed to force a vote on the bill…
McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, called Republicans in Congress and asked them not to sign the petition, Shuler said. He said after McCain’s intervention, Republicans in the House were less willing to sign onto the bill.
Team Maverick denies it. Whom to believe here, Captain Amnesty or a guy from the other side who could very well have ginned this up as a way of kneecapping the GOP nominee among his base on an issue in which he already has zero credibility? If Shuler’s telling the truth, how come none of the border enforcers among the House GOP who surely would have gotten wind of McCain’s meddling have leaked this anonymously to the media? Granted, it’s an election season and party discipline is higher than normal, but loyalty to the nominee for some of these guys will come second to loyalty to the cause.
On the other hand, the last thing McCain wants is to have to vote on this himself. If he votes yes, he alienates the Latinos he’s counting on in purple states to beat Obama; if he votes no, SECOND LOOK AT STAYING HOME! He can’t skip the vote either as it’ll look too weaselly so the natural thing to do is to try to kill it in the House before it squeaks through and becomes his problem. Exit question one: Isn’t the likeliest scenario that some other power player called around on McCain’s behalf, semi-secretly to keep his fingerprints off of it? Exit question two: What would Juan Hernandez say?

Not to argue about anything trivial, you know :-) (but after all this is the web and that’s what we do best sometimes :-)!), but I vote with JetBoy’s spelling at 2:47 PM. Y’all is spelled y’all. Short for you all.
See Southern American English and the title of Y’all-The Magazine of Southern People.

Shuler’s congressional district leans Republican, and he won in an upset in 2006, partially due to his name recognition and to overall discontent by core GOP voters. So Heath may be thinking that with either Hillary or Obama at the top of the ticket this fall, he needs to call an audible and scramble to the right in a hurry, to avoid problems from a potential GOP challenger for his seat, where Democratis turnout could be depressed (especially in North Carolina, if Hillary swindles Obama out of the nomination).
Even if his story is a tad embellished, calling out McCain on immigration reform isn’t a bad idea, since at worst he’ll be seen as making a bogus charge coming from the right of the pending Republican presidential nominee. That would only hurt him if he had a challenger looming in the upcoming N.C. Democratic primary.

We need to build the border fence and have the e-verify for employers. When that happens and people like Sheriff Joe in Maricopa County in AZ start arresting these people and put an end to sanctuary cities, they will self-deport. Its already starting to happen in the Phoenix area.
And anyone arrested for anything; driving infractions, burgarly, etc., should have to show proof of citizenship. No citizenship, hard labor in Alaska and then deported.
cjs1943 on March 27, 2008 at 3:56 PM
That solves it. You’ll have to consider colonizing Mars, with the 3 choices, and with B. Goldwater dead.

I’ll internalize but only partially. Its been a rough day here in Zettersonville and I read this McCain story and the bad b-words just flowed. I assume that was your point of contention. Let’s not deny reality folks. Whether this particular story is True or not is irrelevant. We all know that all the Presidential candidates are pro-amnesty.
It is going to be up to We, the People, to prevent amnesty from becoming law.
I’m hopeful. We did it once, we can do it again. And look at the success of Operation Chaos.
misterpeasea on March 27, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Oh, brother…
Well, the main points I’m trying to make:
1) There’s probably 20 million here illegally. And no one…NO ONE…is going to be deporting all of them. So let’s look at alternatives.
2) McCain hasn’t even hinted that he would go as far as Ronald Reagan once did by granting blanket amnesty.
JetBoy on March 27, 2008 at 4:02 PM
This should be easy enough to check. Perhaps some reporters should call some republican representatives who didn’t sign the petition and ask if they got a call from McCain.
And they might want to follow up with Shuler and ask him why he had to rely upon the other party to get his proposal voted upon too.

There is no way McCain would have touched this. He’s been in the Middle East and Iraq for goodness sakes. He’s not even paying attention to what is going on here. This is a free way for D’s to smack down the R nominee while their candidates are getting raked over the coals.

There is no way this bill was going to pass, even if it did get voted on. So, put yourself in McCain’s place for a minute and think about it. No matter which way he voted, the result would have been….pushing Obama closer to the White House.
If you had the chance to block it without having to cast a vote, wouldn’t you? Even if you really believed that it needed to pass, you have to agree that now is not the time to vote on it. Especially when there is a near zero chance of it actually passing.

JetBoy, nobody worth their salt is advocating a forceful deportation of all illegals in this country. All we are asking for is the enforcement of the laws on the books laid out by the will of the American people.
As for Amnesty, look at it this way, if a criminal breaks law X then their is a legal penalty Y for that action. The law should apply equally to all citizens regardless of race, sex or creed. That is the foundation of the American justice system. However a person entered into this country and found themselves to be illegal, they have by definition, broken a law. They have broken a law that the American people have decided over the years is the law of the land. What John McCain is doing is ignoring the law. They are ignoring the American people and choosing instead to do what they decide should be done. They are replaceing the American justice system with their own free will. All we are saying is for our elected officials to uphold their duty to the constitution and represent the will of the American people. I know thats not much to ask.
If you feel that a law is too harsh or unfair for any reason, there is a process that must be followed in order to go about changing the law. All we want is for the laws on the books to be enforced and if the laws are bad go about the necessary steps to change the law. Unfortunately for John McCain, he knows that obeying the constitution and changing the laws the way they are supposed to be changed is not viable because to do so would have to, at some point, involve the approval of the American citizens. He knows that will never happen so he decided its easier to play kind and just go about things the way he wants to go about things.
I cannot ever vote for him for this reason alone.
Zetterson on March 27, 2008 at 4:15 PM
Enforce the laws and they will self-deport.

Ah, the tried but true “shut the f**k up and support the GOP nominee” riff. No Jet, putting America first does not lead to mindless support of McCain. Everyone is acting shocked that Clinton got caught in a lie. Now, everyone is acting like it is a surprise that McCain is actively attempting to backdoor that which failed in his brokered deal with Teddy Kennedy- specifically amnesty for all the little brown criminals that are running around the country.
This is a taste of what a McCain presidency will do to America and, I for one, am putting America first by not caving in and blindly supporting any candidate; particularly a shify political traitor like McCain. If he wants my vote and support he is going have to prove to me that he stands for my values. Sneaking around the House getting them to spike border security legislation proves what a big rat McCain is. Character counts and McCain is proving himself to be as big a slimeball as expected.

Reporter: Senator McCain, is it true that if you become President you will put a real fence along the border with Mexico rather than just some phony so called “virtual fence”? And a follow up question sir, if so what will the physical fence look like?
John McCain: That is a very good question and yes when I become el President I will put up a physical fence. What will it look like? Well it will run the full length of the border and have special security gates every 100 feet.
All the security gates will have on them:
1) Press one for Spanish (with a response of “Welcome Amigo, my country is your country and please take a free map to the wonderful plantation owner employer of your choice. Also please feel free to enroll you children in our schools and demand that they be taught in Spanish and please also feel free to avail yourself of all the free medical care that you want.”).

Aha! But then, wouldn’t that fall under the term “amnesty”?
Absolutely agreed. But…illegals are not citizens. Now what?
Ok, but here’s where it gets a little tricky. Yeah…what McCain proposes goes against the law as it now stands. But then Bush has ignored the law. Clinton too. Bush 41, Reagan, Carter…how far back do I need to go? Why, all of a sudden, is McCain labeled “McAmnesty”?
This isn’t really a Constitutional issue either. Nothing in the Constitution says we deport people without proper papers. And the law states we allow a “wet foot/dry foot” policy with Cubans, and they don’t enter legally.
There’s just too much nuance to the whole “amnesty” issue. It’s not as cut-and-dry as simply enforcing the law.

It has nothing to do with “expecting so little.” It has to do with the fact that as of right now he is our only hope of NOT having Obama in the White House. I will support any tactic he can think of to get there.
You guys can all write-in vote for Mitt or Reagan or stay home if that is what you feel is the right thing to do. But don’t start complaining afterwards when your fed income taxes are 50% and Iraq is officially renamed al-Qaeda-stan.
I generally don’t agree with the “lesser of two evils” vote. But in this case I’m making an exception. Because, while McCain is not what I want, an Obama presidency will be a disaster.

Branch Rickey on March 27, 2008 at 4:43 PM
Yes & no. The specifics aren’t defined in the constitution, true, but the authority for congress to enact immigration law most certainly is.
The constitution doesn’t specify that congress’ laws have to be intelligent, either ;)
I think it’s as nuanced as certain people wish to make it to deflect debate over what is startlingly obvious – we have perfectly constitutional immigration laws that are not being enforced upon the criminals that reside in this country illegally.
To the extent that the law is not applied, there you find your measure of amnesty. This amnesty is being brought about by people that have no authority to veto the law. These people are in violation of their public oaths of office, and should be (a) fired immediately, and (b) prosecuted.
LimeyGeek on March 27, 2008 at 4:43 PM
How are you? You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive.
Holmes on March 27, 2008 at 4:44 PM
No because the law doesn’t state that the US Government physically deports the criminal. It states that the criminal must leave the country and if they are caught X number of days later, still here, then they can be jailed. Amnesty comes in when you don’t enforce the laws on the books and as a result reward the law breaker with lack of punishment for their crimes. John McCain wants to take this even further. He believes that not only should these criminaliens be awarded with de-facto citizenship, they should also take money out of your pocket for free education, free medical care, free daycare, heck he advocated rewarding illegals with social security payments for income taxes they never paid in. Thats not just Amnesty, that’s Amnesty on steroids. Hence the title, Captain Amnesty.
Zetterson on March 27, 2008 at 4:44 PM
Like I said in an earlier post, we have to build a fence, have e-verify for the employers, end sanctuary cities, and enforce the laws we already have, and they will self-deport.
They can go home and build their economies and rebuild their whole countries. The same goes for Michelle Obama and people of her ilk. Go live in a country that already supports the views that you have instead of trying to wreck ours.

They were all wrong to do so. I’m not sure why that complicates matters. And sure, its kind of rediculous for the police to pull someone over for exceeding the speed limit by 1mph. But believe me, if exceeding the speed limit by 1mph held the same potential national destruction as does illegal immigration in a post 9/11 world, then yes, I would be standing here, using every legal argument possible as to why the strict enforcement of the law is imperative.
Jetboy, let me ask you this long winded question:
When Mohammed Jarrah was pulled over for speeding on Sept 9th 2001 and was found to have obtained his papers by illegal means, what should have been done? What would have been the proper way to handle that situation?
Assuming you agree that preventing 9/11 would have been a good thing to do, by what means should we handle illegal immigrants in order to most effectively avoid such catastrophies?
I am not afraid to say that the number one reason I want to know who is running around our country is that every bit of law enforcement helps to prevent these horrific attacks. Second, is the constitutional arguments because without security the constitution is pretty meaningless.

It would be interesting to impress your memory engrams on a computer,

You owe EVERYONE on this thread a “dork dollar” just for quoting Star Trek imao, of course.

*DING*
Short short version: Shuler’s worried how Immigration will play in his district as a Democrat and he’s talking to Rep. Rahm Emmanuel about it.
Expect an Evans-Novak blurb about Shuler’s district.

Why? The Quote has got you pegged to a “T”.

BTW, you are real classy.
What are you, a “party-man” or a grown-up? This isn’t yearbook editor. This is the world stage. Isolationism did wonders for the world and allowed a little prick from Austria to get a foothold in Germany and allowed a fat toad to gain control in Italy. Must history be taught now because government run schools do not educate but indoctrinate?

Um, if you have to ask then you are beyond help.

JetBoy and other McCain backers …
All McCain has to do, is reject open borders. I’ll believe him if he changes his position. Otherwise, I’m sure you’ll get what you want without me.
I too am an American, Conservative, Republican. And as an American first, I know we have the backbone to put up with 4, or even 8 years of Obama if that’s what it takes to get conservatives back in office.

Now if you’re real Southern:
Y’all is also used in the phrase “all y’all”, which is a more inclusive form comparable to “all of you”.

Actually if you are “real southern” it turns into you’ns

Guess I’m beyond hope too then…

“What I haven’t seen yet is why so many people see McCain as some sort of “pro-amnesty” guy.”
You are obviously a left wing troll and that has got to be the dumbest statement of the day.

Well said

Yeah, that doesn’t play too well, does it? It also weakens the other perfectly legimate arguments. Not cool.

“There’s just too much nuance to the whole “amnesty” issue. It’s not as cut-and-dry as simply enforcing the law.”
The only people who claim nuance are those who attempt to obfuscate the obvious.

I didn’t think “got burka” was particularly useful. And calling people Buffoon kind of hurts you.

No matter who we vote for, we’ve lost the Republic. There is no political will among the ruling elite to do what they, our ‘gov’t', is/are sworn to do: protect us.
Highhopes got it right, but I’ve been labeled a non-conservative by those who pity Monica’s ex-boyfriend’s ‘wife’. Oh well.

I’m convinced that having McCain as the “presumptive nominee” is due less to “liberal Republicans” and more to Democrats voting in early Republican primaries. I think Democrats intentionally pushed to move up the Florida primary and then said it wouldn’t count, to encourage Democrats to vote for McCain. It would appear that their strategy worked. But I still believe in miracles…like believing that the only candidate who comitted to build the border fence will, by the grace of God, be the next President of the United States.
