Too bad to check: McCain blocked House border enforcement bill?

What? No, no, he’s … learned his lesson. He gets it now. He’s an enforcer. He wouldn’t let us down again, not after those very sincere compliments he paid us at CPAC.
Would he?
U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler says he believes Republican presidential candidate John McCain blocked his immigration bill from getting a vote on the U.S. House floor. McCain’s staff denies it.
The Waynesville Democrat spoke to the Rotary Club of Hendersonville on Tuesday. He said the Republican leadership tried to bring the Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement Act to the House floor. They used a provision of House rules called a discharge petition, in which a simple majority can bring to the floor a bill that is stuck in committee.
The petition had 181 of the 217 signatures needed to force a vote on the bill…
McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, called Republicans in Congress and asked them not to sign the petition, Shuler said. He said after McCain’s intervention, Republicans in the House were less willing to sign onto the bill.
Team Maverick denies it. Whom to believe here, Captain Amnesty or a guy from the other side who could very well have ginned this up as a way of kneecapping the GOP nominee among his base on an issue in which he already has zero credibility? If Shuler’s telling the truth, how come none of the border enforcers among the House GOP who surely would have gotten wind of McCain’s meddling have leaked this anonymously to the media? Granted, it’s an election season and party discipline is higher than normal, but loyalty to the nominee for some of these guys will come second to loyalty to the cause.
On the other hand, the last thing McCain wants is to have to vote on this himself. If he votes yes, he alienates the Latinos he’s counting on in purple states to beat Obama; if he votes no, SECOND LOOK AT STAYING HOME! He can’t skip the vote either as it’ll look too weaselly so the natural thing to do is to try to kill it in the House before it squeaks through and becomes his problem. Exit question one: Isn’t the likeliest scenario that some other power player called around on McCain’s behalf, semi-secretly to keep his fingerprints off of it? Exit question two: What would Juan Hernandez say?

This is the one issue that scares the bejesus out of me with McCain. The sincerity of his “I got the message” comment was simply not convincing. I live in Texas and the border issue is huge. If he gets elected and then fails to do anything about it there will be a Texas sized’ backlash the likes of which no one has seen.

Can you imagine the relief Pelosi felt when the immigration bill died in the Senate? She had to be petrified that she would have to face the bill in the House. McCain as well does not need the headache.

With all due respect regarding his military service, I am having serious doubts about his intelligence. He should be a champion for this bill after the shamnesty debacle. I long for the day there is a politician who actually works for the people of this country instead of their own interests.

McCain would totally do this. There will be all kinds of bumping of bills this year. I’m telling you, they are all going to try to avoid the issue until after December 31!! The Hutchinson Amendment screwed the Secure Fence Act. As I posted on another thread from an email I received from grassfire.org (emphasis mine):
Please sign this petition to tell Congress to restore the Secure Fence Act!!!
Luckily Duncan Hunter is working on this. Now we need to show we still give a crap and support his efforts.

“Captain Amnesty”?
*in best Marge Simpson voice* “Mmmmmmmm…”
I’ll say this: There’s NO WAY McCain kept this bill from coming to a vote. And there’s nothing here that even remotely suggests that, except what one person is saying.

The Constitution Party selects their candidate in April. If there isn’t an obvious act by Mr. McAARP to get real about border enforcement (i.e., get rid of Juan Hernandez), I WILL VOTE FOR THE CONSTITUTION PARTY CANDIDATE.
Dammmmm the consequences. This story might be surfacing at just the right time to show true conservatives which side Jn. McAARP (Depends Poster Boy) is really on.

Neither will Hillary/Obama. On this item we’re scrooomed royally. However, there are differences on other complex and consequential topics. Use your heads clearly. This is a very precarious time for our country. Please don’t put blinders on, or remove them if you’ve got them.
What needs to be hammered more than the border, on immigration, is the legal employment of personnel, professional, technical and unskilled. These laws exist and are broken every second, many times over. The border can never be completely secure. The existing laws s/b respected by those we vote for.
Entelechy on March 27, 2008 at 2:36 PM
Our convention hasn’t happened yet. If this comes out as accurate, McCain may yet have to give up his assumed nomination. Maybe it isn’t the Dems who will have the biggest Convention fight.

Is it possible for a Republican candidate to win the general election exclusively with the votes of pissed of democrat voters? Republicans stay home, Democrats vote republican and the Republican wins? Could this be an actual possibility here?
Zetterson on March 27, 2008 at 2:42 PM
I WISH!
McAmnesty will do exactly what he intended to do the first time around. He is not beholden to the Republicans who vote for him…he will thank the libs and independants that cross the aisle and vote for him, by increasing THEIR voting base with an Amnesty bill.

Precisely. It’s hard to believe that McCain talked to members individually and he wouldn’t have issued a denial if he sent the request to all of them because it would come out that his denial was a lie.

stenwin77 on March 27, 2008 at 2:47 PM
Are you serious? Because it “sounds like something he would do”?
*sigh* I honestly wish my fellow conservatives would truly define what “amnesty” is. I figure y’all see “amnesty” as anything short of immediate deportment of any illegal caught for any reason. It would have to mean that.
Maybe that’s it….maybe that’s what I don’t quite understand: What is “amnesty”?
JetBoy on March 27, 2008 at 2:47 PM

Branch Rickey on March 27, 2008 at 2:50 PM
You do realize that Amnesty already has a definition? Don’t you?
Zetterson on March 27, 2008 at 2:50 PM
If McCain wants to get out in front of this, he’d better get his arse in front of a camera and deny it PERSONALLY, rather than letting an easily discardable flunky do it for him. Until then, I believe Shuler.
fossten on March 27, 2008 at 2:54 PM
That’s just it…I’ve seen a whole variety of definitions for “amnesty”. What I haven’t seen yet is why so many people see McCain as some sort of “pro-amnesty” guy. Yes…something needs to be done about people here illegally. But we need to be realists about it too. And, look at short-term and long-term ramifications of deporting millions of people.
And again…deporting even one person, without securing the borders first, is futile. And also…most illegals I have known (through work and such) didn’t sneak in across the border…they overstayed their visas.
JetBoy on March 27, 2008 at 2:55 PM
What part of that answer do you not understand? Anything less IS amnesty. No quotation marks on amnesty….
Branch Rickey on March 27, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Amnesty is any form of reward for the cheating, stealing, lying law breakers that spit in the face of our country’s immigration laws.
I think once they have proven they are law breaking cheaters, they should never be allowed to be US citizens and should be deported at once if cought.

It’s pretty bad when a moderate Democrat is more honest than the presumptive GOP nominee but that’s where we are. McCain is right up there with Clinton when it comes to lying to the public. We are so screwed no matter how the election comes out- A racist, a liar, or an even bigger liar who detests his own base. Nobody wins in November!
Congratulations, once again, all you smug liberal Republicans who decided retribution against social conservatives and evangelicals was more important than fielding a candidate that doesn’t routinely tell the most important part of his base to f**k off. You McCain apologists should be ashamed of yourselves.
highhopes on March 27, 2008 at 3:01 PM
Until McCain absolutely says he will slam the door on illegal immigration with fences and more armed border enforcement, I will not vote for him. The only question for me is whether I vote for the Democrat nominee. The only significant difference between McCain and Hillary/Obama, is McCain is committed to keeping Iraq free. Controlling our borders is more important to me.
doufree on March 27, 2008 at 3:02 PM
Before anyone gets too excited and picks up the pitchforks, please keep something in mind here. The only one telling us this is a single House Democrat. Team McCain isn’t ignoring it, but actually denies it.

Branch Rickey on March 27, 2008 at 3:05 PM
Overstaying visas is just as evil as sneaking across the border. Either you have the character to follow the rules, or you don’t. Black and white.
If you are a cheater that refuses to follow our rules, your ass should be gone. If some shmuck comes through my front door without my permission, and it is not a legitimate emergency, I will show no mercy.
saiga on March 27, 2008 at 3:05 PM
I haven’t read all the comments, so if someone else has raised this point then please forgive the redundancy; whether or not the description of what happened is true, this portion I quoted from the article above shows why some of us “deranged” people can actually envision a scenario in which a McCain presidency would actually sell us down the river faster. Once “our guy” claims what he wants, our party will just fall in line with him. But, it really doesn’t matter does it? He’s “our guy” and we’re stuck with the “Mav.”

To them it’s all about a $10,000,000,000.00 per month war. Nothing else matters. Who cares if our country is being invaded by Mexico??? Who cares if we pay $10 (or more) a gallon for gas?? Who cares if our national debt is beyond the imagination??? Who cares if Social Security is hopelessly bankrupt??? Who cares if our economy is in the toilet???? Gotta continue that $10,000,000,000.00/per month war.

OK, now I’m getting it. (heh, sorry about the y’all [or ya’ll] I’m a Yankee to the core, what do I know)
Now that I have this straight…that by the comments above, “amnesty” (you’ll see why I use quotes in a bit) is anything short of immediate deportment of anyone here illegally. For any reason. And nothing else matters in regards to this…no hearings, no hardship, no taking account families. Like McCain once said, would YOU like to be the one to call a serviceman overseas, fighting for America, that we’ll be deporting his mother next week?
Then there’s the costs of all this deportment. The logistics. The economic ramifications.
No one, from either party, is going to be mass deporting anyone. I like to see the law enforced, as it is, as much as anyone. But it’s just not realistic.
JetBoy on March 27, 2008 at 3:10 PM
Yeah.
Want more examples? Teaming up with Feingold to curtail political speech.
Teaming up with Dhims and RINOS to keep judges from a straight up or down vote.
Calling anti-ILLEGAL immigrant conservatives racists.
Teaming up with Ted Kennedy (of all people!!), forcing an amnesty bill that the country doesn’t want down our throats.
Damn straight this is likely a Mcshamnesty move. You think its beyond McShamnesty to make some back-room deal to keep an actually half-way decent immigration bill from seeing the light of day???? Are you serious?
Amnesty is offering McShamnesty a bribe (currently called a “fine”) to stay in this country permanently without fear of recrimination or punishment for perpetually breaking our laws, giving only 24 hours to perform a background check on all 12 million ILLLEGAL aliens or else it won’t be needed anymore.
Darksean on March 27, 2008 at 3:10 PM
And again, it’s become “Everyone pile on McCain!” because of what…one Democratic Congressman claims and Team McCain denies.

The U.S. isn’t going to be Kosovo anytime soon. I’m just as anti-illegal alien as the rest, but I’m saying don’t jump on McCain automatically for this when it’s only a claim made by a single Democrat. Kucinich makes a lot of claims too, but I tend not to believe him.

Jetboy, look into enforcement by attrition.
Cut off their reasons for staying and they’ll leave. Make it illegal to employ, house, or educate illegals and enforce it. Simple as that.
Actually ASK if someone is here legal and if they aren’t, DEPORT THEM.
From a security standpoint, its a no brainer. From a cost standpoint, he will break the US economy and eventually the welfare and social security systems.
But we’re just supposed to sit down and shut up, because McShamnesty’s the nominee, right?

Called McCain’s office and spoke with some snot-noised 20 something receptionist and asked if the office had issued any statement about Shuler’s allegation that McCain had worked “to block the SAFE Act from coming to a vote.”
The Guy said that I obviously didn’t know how Congress worked if I thought the Senator could “block’ house bills. I explained the details of the allegation and all he would say was “Well what would that accomplish?”
Quite a little prick.
No way in hell I’m voting for McCain.
Kasper Hauser on March 27, 2008 at 3:39 PM
Though no federal statistics are kept on murders or any other crimes committed by illegal aliens, a number of groups have produced estimates based on data collected from prisons, news reports and independent research.
Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens, according to statistics released by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. If those numbers are correct, it translates to 4,380 Americans murdered annually by illegal aliens. That’s 21,900 since Sept. 11, 2001.
But the carnage wrought by illegal alien murderers represents only a fraction of the pool of blood spilled by American citizens as a result of an open border and un-enforced immigration laws.
While King reports 12 Americans are murdered daily by illegal aliens, he says 13 are killed by drunk illegal alien drivers – for another annual death toll of 4,745. That’s [another] 23,725 since Sept. 11, 2001.
Could be that the 10 billion a month might be better spent in the U.S. instead of “nation building” in Iraq.

Potential Muhammad Attas these days are being wiped out - and now with the success of the surge, the wiping out is being done more and more by the elected government of Iraq. It’s very imperfect, but it’s hard to argue with the results.

Ok, why has there been no scrutiny about McCain’s foreign policy speech from yesterday, except by MMalkin. It is extremely disturbing, and liberal as all get out! From global warming to gitmo, it could be given by Hillary or Obama, except for Iraq.
Where was this in the primaries? Hmmmmmm?
The guy is a pandering RINO and I am beginning to agree with Rush.

No, because thanks to Senor Juan McCain and Co. we are fighting the additional war against the illegal aliens as well as Sharia Law-Loving Freaks. It’s not Constantinople anymore for a reason people.
We have to fight both, MB4.

No way I am either. I have been chastized for not blocking a democrat vote, but I don’t care. I refuse to compromise my standards. Continuing to hold my nose and vote for lousy republican candidates just encourages more lousy candidates. I would support a new consevative political party, but I fear too much of the American voting pool is too far gone. They want the Obamas and Hillarys of the world. I want the Teddy Roosevelts and John Waynes of the world.

You can count on it. You go ahead a vote the socialist of your choice. Then, you can celebrate the destruction of what’s left of what used to be America. Idiot.

So much for his conviction-trumps-politics “I would rather lose a campaign than lose a war” (July 21, 2007) postion.
This truly will be a history-making election. Forget the 1st woman / 1st black precedent. If McAmnesty wins it could very well be the first white man to win the office because there wasn’t even one decent candidate running.
