Accused Saddam operative: I met with Hillary at the White House; Update: Photo added

The operative in question? Muthanna al-Hanooti, a.k.a. Baghdad Jim McDermott’s travel agent for that Saddam-comped junket to Iraq in 2002. The Sun’s pushing this story hard and it does indeed look bad bad bad … until you read down into the article and discover he didn’t start working for Iraqi intelligence until 1999. The meeting with Hillary happened in 1996.

A Michigan man facing federal criminal charges of illegally working for Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi Intelligence Service says he met with Hillary Clinton at the White House in May 1996.

In a 1997 interview with this reporter, Muthanna Hanooti said that at the meeting, Mrs. Clinton was “very receptive” to his request for an easing of the American sanctions on Iraq that were in place at the time. He said Mrs. Clinton “passed a message to the State Department” about the need to implement the oil-for-food deal, which was intended to allow Saddam to sell billions of dollars’ worth of oil to pay for food for Iraqi citizens…

[T]o reporters on the foreign policy beat in Washington at the time and to those active in the Iraqi opposition to Saddam, it was clear whose agenda was being advanced. The news article in 1997, published in the Forward, that described Mrs. Clinton’s involvement with Mr. Hanooti began: “The American-led blockade of Iraq is crumbling, following an intensive, domestic lobbying effort that has involved Rep. David Bonior and Senator Abraham — and, according to some sources, Hillary Rodham Clinton.”

In other words, he was there on behalf of Saddam even if he wasn’t technically there on behalf of Saddam. I’m underwhelmed, but only because my expectations of who the Democrats generally and the Clintons in particular are willing to entertain at the White House are so low that they’re almost impossible to disappoint. Of course she met with Hanooti; if memory serves, the foreign leader who visited the White House most frequently during the Clinton years was Yasser Arafat. Obama, meanwhile, is promising to give Ahmadinejad, Chavez, and anyone else — save Osama — some presidential face time in the interests of “dialogue.” The only thing that makes this a little different was that Saddam was under UN sanctions at the time, but since Hanooti wasn’t officially working for him, she probably figured she had all the plausible deniability she needed. Where’s the story here, unless it’s “Never underestimate Hillary Clinton”?

Update: Steve Emerson has a keepsake from the meeting. Scroll down.

Typical dems.

Good lord she’s slimy.

Looks like Hanooti had a lot of cash to spread around.

Mr. Hanooti’s dealings with politicians reach beyond Mrs. Clinton. Federal Election Commission records show he donated to the campaigns of Mr. Bonior, of President Bush, and of Spencer Abraham, a Republican senator of Michigan who served as Mr. Bush’s energy secretary. He also gave to Rep. Tom Campbell, a Republican of California, and to Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat of Michigan.

Classic. Nice put, sir.

I’m not surprised, I mean, this IS the party that sold nuclear ICBM target acquisition technology to the chicoms, is it not?

“… if memory serves, the foreign leader who visited the White House most frequently during the Clinton years was Yasser Arafat. Obama, meanwhile, is promising to give Ahmadinejad, Chavez …”

If aliens from another galaxy attacked this country, the Donks would invite them to negotiate our surrender. Pathetic.

To bad for Obama he can’t use this against her, he doesn’t think we should have gone there or that we had enemies there.

eski502 on March 27, 2008 at 10:11 PM

He was probably just helping them finance some sort of land acquisition for a Georgian mansion. Wait…wrong filthy liar.

Isn’t that good ol fred’s boy?

All the more reason to hope she steals the nomination from Obama. I think both are beatable, but Obama’s ability to “Slick Willy” his way into the White House cannot be ignored. Clinton on the other hand, so many negatives against her it’s just seemingly impossible that she would win a general election, against nearly anyone.

Where’s the story here, unless it’s “Never underestimate Hillary Clinton Clinton, Inc.”?

Fixed it for ya……….

Seven Percent Solution on March 27, 2008 at 10:22 PM

And then she voted to invade 6 years later. Looks like someone got suckered!

Seixon on March 27, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Of course she met with Hanooti; if memory serves, the foreign leader who visited the White House most frequently during the Clinton years was Yasser Arafat.

And the payoff was, WTC1, Kobar, African Embessies, USS Cole and 9/11…

The expression “Congressional junket” doesn’t inspire anything good. If this were the only ‘problem’ Hillary had, she’d be lucky. It’s not good, but most people won’t understand this, and the media don’t either, or don’t care.

Methinks he might have been an “Aide” to the intelligence services of Sadam…

And all of us know about the Clintons and “Aides”…

“Ply them with cigars” (Bill Clinton – paraphrase)

“Why Muthanna, is that a big fat checkbook in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?”

Gartrip on March 27, 2008 at 11:50 PM

What do you mean “uh oh”? This will probably help her in the remaining primaries.

1) The fact is, as I’ve repeatedly noted on my site over the years, the top Bush Administration Justice Department and Homeland Security Department officials, including Tom Ridge, Michael Chertoff, etc. met with Al-Hanooti. So, if you’re going to hold this against Hillary, you must do the same for the Bushies on this. Bush’s U.S. Attorney, Stephen Murphy III–whom Bush has just nominated to the U.S. Ct. of Appeals–also met with Al-Hanooti and did nothing about him for years. Again, we must apply the Hillary standard to him. And we aren’t.

2) Not sure how Steve Emerson can call these “Exclusive Photos” when they are from online newsletters of LIFE For Relief and Development and I’ve been posting the same photos on my site for years.

Why are these people not in jail?

Seven Percent Solution on March 28, 2008 at 12:51 AM

Sadly, for the Obama crowd, they can’t use this against her as, in their minds, Mahooti, Sadam, Sadam’s wretched spawn, Chemical Ali, et al, were all innocent victims of “Bush’s Racist, Criminal War of Agression and Imperialism for Oil and American Hegemony” or whatever those jackasses are calling it these days.

Hell, this may very well be yet another attempt by the Obama crowd to try and deflect attention from the fact that their boy surrounds himself with some of the most vile and dispicable American citizens currently residing in a country that they apparently hate.

Hey, maybe Hillary has some experience after all.

Bigfoot on March 28, 2008 at 8:32 AM

Hillary’s going to need to find a dead body in The Obamassiah’s closet. But come on, he came up through Chicago politics, he can’t be all that clean.

rbj on March 28, 2008 at 8:58 AM

To the Clintons, the world revolves around their own personal best interests. Selling out the country in their quest for personal gain is just business as usual. It is sad that millions of Americans still press for them to lead our nation. That says alot about where this country is headed.

volsense on March 28, 2008 at 9:46 AM

The whole Democrapic party is a detriment to the the United States.
