The obligatory “Wright smears Italians, sort of” post

Perish the thought that any particular ethnic group might prefer certain ingredients in its cuisine.
“(Jesus’) enemies had their opinion about Him,” Wright wrote in a eulogy of the late scholar Asa Hilliard in the November/December 2007 issue. “The Italians for the most part looked down their garlic noses at the Galileans.”
Wright continued, “From the circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth (in a barn in a township that was under the Apartheid Roman government that said his daddy had to be in), up to and including the circumstances surrounding Jesus’ death on a cross, a Roman cross, public lynching Italian style. …
This is one of those very stupid insults whose offense lies not in the actual words themselves but in the intent that lies behind them. It’s like calling someone Asian a “rice-eater”: Nothing wrong with liking rice, nothing factually incorrect about suggesting that rice is a staple of Asian cuisine, but the meaning is pejorative by design if not in effect and thus does a moronic putdown become fighting words. Why, simply by inflecting the right part of a sentence, even the dumbest adjective can become a vicious rip. Right, you beard-grower?
Follow the link to CNS to see the secret U.S. government/KKK konspiracy laid bare. Exit question: Obama’s ties to Wright may not have legs with the general population, but what about within certain demographics?

Wright wins a gold medal for race-baiting hypocrisy. If a politician suggested that a certain ethnic group enjoyed a certain fried bird sold at Popeye’s he’d was collapse in a spastic fit of rage and the sheer evil racism of the very idea. Ok, well, maybe if a white politician said it.

If Wright is Obama’s moral compass and mentor, how can Obama’s ties to Wright not have legs? A “moral compass” and “mentor” have a huge influence on a person. This hate filled, racist minister is Obama’s spiritual advisor. Why would Obama still be in that church if he didn’t agree with Wright? It’s not like Wright’s views were a secret.

Poor Jeremiah. He can’t help it if he’s a anti-American, racist bigot. It’s our fault he’s like that. He only went to one of the best schools in Philadelphia. He only lived in one of the nicest neighborhoods. His mother was only the vice-principal of the distinguished academic Philadelphia High School for Girls. His father was only a prominent Philadelphia pastor. Don’t blame Jeremiah, he’s just a product of his environment.

If you really want some yummy garlic, I recommend skorðaliá (σκορδαλιά), a Greek dish whose name means “garlicky stuff”.
It’s basically potatoes mashed up with a bit of olive-oil and lots of garlic. You can eat it plain and cold as a spread on bread or cooked in/on any number of things (usually vegetables or fish).
There’s a recipe here. (Click the photo to enlarge.) YUM!

Well, the Italians in Jesus’ day were definitely Italian. However, I totally agree with you that Wright chose to call him that for the sake of the modern resonance. It’s not that he’s using an anachronistic name, but that of the two obvious ones to choose from he picks that still borne by people today.
And I wonder if he’d call the people in Rome today “Christ-killers”.

You say this as though it is something we don’t want. Some of us believe Hillary is a better opponent.
That’s putting it into perspective.
True, but there is something to his view that Jesus was lynched. I mean Jesus was executed by the state but only because a mob decided He needed to be executed. He wasn’t really given a trial.
Esthier on March 26, 2008 at 5:04 PM
That’s a bit of a stretch. Since the first century Romans, the people who have lived in Italy as a nation have been mixed with all sorts of people from across what was the Roman world. All of the Roman soldiers stationed in Palestine weren’t necessarily from Rome. Italy was later settled by scores of peoples from Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Northern Africa and other locations.
It would be like claiming that the English are the same people that the Romans found when they first landed on the Island. It’s not accurate.
This racist pastor is simply stirring things up and using a Nazi style science of race.

Yes, you can also make skorðaliá with bread or light beans. Obviously potatoes have only been around so long (and they came to Greece much later than England and Europe). But I’ve only ever had it with potatoes and it’s so good. I’d love to try it with bread or beans though!

Right, and if I’m not mistaken that mob consisted solely of Jews, not Romans. I’d say Wright’s view of history is a little skewed to say the least. I think he probably knows better he just wants to incite the crowd. Sort of like the Jewish nobility who incited the “Lynching” of Jesus.

As I recall, Pilate gave the mob a choice to kill Jesus or Barabbas. Barabbas was a popular leader among those who wanted to revolt against Roman rule. Jesus was a leader of what the mob probably saw as the leader of a cult religious sect, and one whom the Sanhedrin was accusing of blasphemy at that.
Right or wrong, if you put what happened into more modern political perspective…say, a British colonial governor giving an American mob the choice between hanging either Patrick Henry, or say, Joseph Smith (had they been contemporaries, which they weren’t…it’s just for argument’s sake)….wouldn’t the American mob have been just as likely to choose to save Patrick Henry and toss Smith to the noose?
An awful lot of Jew hatred has been generated over the centuries by the inclination of “The Jews” killing Jesus. Likely many in that mob Pilate addressed never had even heard of Jesus or what he was teaching. In their eyes he was probably a nobody.
In all likelihood, most in that mob knew not what they did.
My only point is that put in analogy to a more modern situation, would we as a mob have chosen any differently?
And as I recall the story when I read it, it was the Roman soldiers that whipped him with a cat’o'nine tails, shoved a crown of thorns on his head, nailed him to that cross, and hoisted him up.
Whatever your belief, I’d say it’s specious to argue that one side was more guilty of killing him than the other. There was plenty of shared responsbility for his death to go around.
Then again, depending on what you believe…who ultimately bears that responsibility? The “Jews”? The Romans? Or was it divine intention that Jesus himself supposedly foresaw as his life’s mission, based on the way the writings tell it? If the latter, how can either the Jews or Romans be blamed by anyone, if they were merely the tools of a higher power?
Shirotayama on March 26, 2008 at 5:28 PM
Fair enough. I don’t mean that the racial makeups (already a problematic phrase) of ancient and modern Italy are the same. (Lots of Germanic blood there, inter alia.) I just mean that one can (and indeed must) speak of “Italy” and “Italian” when discussing antiquity.
There have been changes in the language and character of the people, but ancient Italy still has great importance to modern Italy–not for nothing was the modern state’s capital made Rome–and I imagine an average modern Italian will identify himself largely, if not completely, with his cultural ancestors from antiquity (however many of his blood ancestors may have come into Italy from elsewhere).
The point though is that, while a modern Italian can hold this (cultural) inheritance up high as a matter of pride, Wright is subtly holding the same up as a smear, as to say “Italians [who here stand pars pro toto of white people] are Christ-killers”. (And you know who the current-day incarnation of the Messiah is…)
His inconsistency though is his treatment of the Jews. The Italians may have Gallic or Langobardic blood in them, but are still Italians. Jews may have European (or, as far as I know, Khazar) blood in them, but are still Jews. Yet he treats the two groups differently: Italians in his version go from white in antiquity to white today (and thus always bad), while Jews go from black in antiquity to [mostly] white today (and thus good to bad).

I’d argue that none of them knew what they were doing. I can’t believe they intended to execute God.
I certainly don’t disagree, which is why I believe the “blame the Jews” approach is completely misguided, especially considering that Jesus and the disciples were also Jews.
My comment was not intended to apply blame to the Jews but only to admit that were it not for that mob Jesus would not have been executed. Pilate wanted nothing to do with any of it and had been warned by his wife to stay away, but the mob would not have calmed until Jesus was dead.

Barabbas was described as a notorious prisoner. Pilate practically advocates to the crowd for the release of Jesus and only capitulates to the crowd because a riot was brewing. The Roman soldiers were only doing as they were trained (in their own brutal blood thirsty way), but they were ultimately acting at the behest of the Jewish authorities. The Romans could care less. They just wanted everyone to calm down, do business, and pay tribute.

Jesus wasn’t killed for any religious reasons. He was felt to be a threat to the established gentry. The fact that they were all Jewish has nothing to do with it. The Romans certainly did not feel threatened by one more wild eyed prophet in a land full of them. The whole point here is that Wright’s analogy of a lynching is neither correct nor relevant. Jesus did have a trial in the manner of the day certainly not by our standards but he was tried nevertheless. Wright’s assertion that the Romans lynched him is just wrong.

As for Wright. He preaches hate. He should try the Gospel. It’s much more liberating! The truth shall make you free!
Jesus’ death may have looked like a lynching, but my Bible says He went willingly and indeed that was His mission on Earth.
Our sin killed Jesus. God poured His wrath on Jesus so if we choose Him, God won’t pour out His wrath on us in the time of judgment. The way the world is going these days it’s starting to look like that will be sooner rather than later!
