Video: McCain does Streisand

It first came out two years ago on Saturday Night Live, but it looks like the video of John McCain singing Streisand’s greatest hits has started making the e-mail rounds again. We talk about tone-deaf politicians, but rarely do we see the literal example so clearly. McCain bravely enters William Hung territory, although McCain spares us the “She Bangs” cover. He makes a great point about celebrity and politics along the way:

For those who think that McCain has no sense of humor, this should prove a revelation, albeit a painful one. Do you think McCain was brave during his POW years in Vietnam? Wait until you hear the “Yentl” cover.

Say Ed, you’re from MN. Take a look at this.

Maybe you need to start another thread.

cjs1943 on March 25, 2008 at 12:06 PM

That made me like him a bit more….

ElectricPhase on March 25, 2008 at 12:08 PM

I’ve been in politics for over 20 years. And for over 20 years, I’ve had Barbra Streisand trying to do my job; so I decided to try my hand at HER job

Heh.

amerpundit on March 25, 2008 at 12:09 PM

Babs has had twenty years of practice, but Johnny Mac does a better Babs than Babs does doing Johnny Mac.

infidel on March 25, 2008 at 12:10 PM

Favorite line:

My new CD is a must for all of Barbra Streisand’s fans, as well as log-cabin Republicans. And a special added bonus, just for Babs – a portion of all sales will be used to damage Alaskan wildlife preserves. So, order today!

amerpundit on March 25, 2008 at 12:12 PM

I can’t stand him but that was hilarious.

“Check out this classic…Memories..”

“PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME….Pretty annoying, huh?”

McCain wins the funniest candidate award.

emailnuevo on March 25, 2008 at 12:13 PM

OMG, that was hysterical….I didn’t know he had a sense of humor like that.

TheGoblinKing on March 25, 2008 at 12:14 PM

heh, pretty funny, but painfull to listen to.
“Do I know how to sing? Better then she knows how to run America”

Wyrd on March 25, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Enough is Enough! Is Enough! Is Enough!

mymanpotsandpans on March 25, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Johnny Mac has a great sense of humor.

Way better than Hillobama. He must be smiling now.

Pax americana on March 25, 2008 at 12:16 PM

Fantastic.

p40tiger on March 25, 2008 at 12:17 PM

I actually like him a little more after seeing that! Anyone who takes on the Beaked Wonder is ok with me.

Reaganite84 on March 25, 2008 at 12:21 PM

CJS

HA is on it and I’ve contacted the school and expressed my anger. Going to my VFW tonight . Needless to say, MN combat vets aren’t happy.

MNDavenotPC on March 25, 2008 at 12:22 PM

Funny, I always thought that “Hot Johnny Love” was a dancer…

heldmyw on March 25, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Pretty funny, but my gawd . . . he sings even worse than I do!

TooTall on March 25, 2008 at 12:32 PM

TooTall on March 25, 2008 at 12:32 PM

Johnny Mac sings like Sinatra, but was doing an impression.

MNDavenotPC on March 25, 2008 at 12:22 PM

I posted this before I looked at the other threads. Saw after the fact that HA was already on it. And, thank you for your service.

cjs1943 on March 25, 2008 at 12:37 PM

He’s such a conundrum…he seems likable, when he’s not spouting lies about Mitt Romney.

ArtLindsey on March 25, 2008 at 12:37 PM

Return of the Mack! >:}

I didn’t know McCain was a wrestler and a boxer.. tough guy.

Great skit…terrible voice. :-)

Slublog on March 25, 2008 at 12:43 PM

As a singer…ouch. My ears!!! But, I watched it live when he hosted. It was one of my favorite SNL skits of all time. All it needs is “more cowbell!”

acleaver on March 25, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Wait until you hear the “Yentl” cover.

Umm. Let’s not.

nukemhill on March 25, 2008 at 12:51 PM

Maybe he could sing his way through the campaign! I agree, when he isn’t spouting lies about Mitt, he is a little more palatable.

flytier on March 25, 2008 at 1:00 PM

That was funny. Thanks for posting it.

winemkr on March 25, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Uh oh! He made a gay joke.

MirCat on March 25, 2008 at 1:07 PM

Soothing.

mattyj86 on March 25, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Okay that does it. I’m not really thrilled that he’s the nominee, but now I’m definitely voting for him!

Brat on March 25, 2008 at 1:35 PM

Since the video is blocked here (thanks to work software blockers), I can’t see the video.

Of course, if I take the headline for how it reads, I know I wouldn’t want to see McCain doing Barbra Streisand!. hehe

Torch on March 25, 2008 at 1:36 PM

At least he didn’t wear a dress.

tommylotto on March 25, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Ah, yes. McCain may be occasionally conservative, but he is always wickedly funny and often irreverent. A McCain-Thompson ticket would be a laugh riot. Remember how they were enjoying private jokes at the expense of Huckabee and Paul during one of the debates (New Hampshire, I think)?

The audience laughter on the video clip probably owes in part to South Park’s relentless skewering of La Streisand.

Hmmm, I wonder if any of McCain’s oratorical hilarity is available online.

Terrie on March 25, 2008 at 1:43 PM

That was a good Saturday Night Live episode.

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/02/02cmeetthepress.phtml
The Meet the Press parody was a highlight.

My favorite bit…
Sen. John McCain: I was a candidate in 200. I am not in 2004. I will not challenge President Bush as a leader of my party.

Tim Russert: What if President bush does not run?

Sen. John McCain: I don’t see any reason-

Tim Russert: What if he forgets to run?

Sen. John McCain: Alright, Tim.. alright, Tim..

Tim Russert: The President forgets to run for re-election.. and the Republicans are without a candidate. Does John McCain then step in to fill that void?

Sen. John McCain: I would call the President, and remind him to run.

Mister Mets on March 25, 2008 at 1:47 PM

my ears….are….blleeeeeding

Defector01 on March 25, 2008 at 1:50 PM

At least he didn’t wear a dress.

tommylotto on March 25, 2008 at 1:38 PM

The person that wore a dress was our best candidate.

Chakra Hammer on March 25, 2008 at 1:55 PM

That said, McCain is better than the alternatives.

Chakra Hammer on March 25, 2008 at 1:57 PM

Well, clearly neither McCain nor Hillary can sing (remember the Star Mangled Banner caught on mic fiasco?) I wonder if the Messiah can sing? Surely a guy who can walk on water can also carry a tune….

aero on March 25, 2008 at 2:00 PM

And?

KBird on March 25, 2008 at 2:01 PM

That’s another reason why McCain is going to lose the elections: He can’t even sing.

Where’s Karl Rove when you need him?

Let him train McCain on dancing too.

And both can join George W. Bush and form the “Three Stooges.”

One thing a candidate should never do:

Don’t look straight and closely at the camera and say “Look at me America, I’m telling you the truth.”

John Kerry did it and now he’s cleaning his wife’s panties.

Indy Conservative on March 25, 2008 at 2:32 PM

Mac the Knife.

mikeyboss on March 25, 2008 at 2:40 PM

Let’s not forget the Senator mocking Woodstock as a “cultural and pharmaceutical event” that he missed as he “was tied up.”

I wish I could find a transcript of the Washington dinner speech (Gridiron Club 1999?) where McCain was a revelation of rip-roaring rhetoric.

Terrie on March 25, 2008 at 2:48 PM

That was great. I’m even starting to like him.

AlanC on March 25, 2008 at 2:51 PM

he seems likable, when he’s not spouting lies about Mitt Romney.

Or about amnesty. Or about conservatives. Or about ..

Get a grip, people. The man despises you as much as Obama or Clinton do.

flenser on March 25, 2008 at 3:20 PM

Geneva violation.

Anybody (including McCain) still think that water-boarding is torture?

My collie says:

Please don’t play that clip again, I’ll confess.

CyberCipher on March 25, 2008 at 5:11 PM

Obama just called in and demanded that McCain fire the singing advisor…

Hog Wild on March 25, 2008 at 9:22 PM

It first came out two years ago on Saturday Night Live,

Nah, much older than that. It first ran in October 19, 2002. Excellent episode all around.
