Heart-ache: Chelsea gets the Monica question

posted at 10:14 pm on March 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

It’s Clinton Day at HA so we might as well put a bow on it. Fair game? The boss’s points are well taken but the cringe factor for me is simply too high. No need to rub her face in daddy’s shame when there are so many other important questions to be asked. Like, “Do you ever worry that pathological lying might be hereditary?” Or, “If Tuzla was too dangerous for your pop, how come he sent you there instead?”

I would ask if as a result of her father’s sex addiction, is she a shameless whore?

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:17 PM

I would treat her with a little dignity. Period.

AbaddonsReign on March 25, 2008 at 10:18 PM

I say leave the girl alone. She does not deserve to have to answer for anyone’s shame but her own.

thedecider on March 25, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Tasteless.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:17 PM

Tasteless.

VolMagic on March 25, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Yeah, um, the cringe factor’s a little high on that one too.

Allahpundit on March 25, 2008 at 10:19 PM

I wonder what the kid actually asked her?

That’s at my alma mater, Butler University.

Anwyn on March 25, 2008 at 10:19 PM

She was just a kid when it happened, leave her out of it. She’s campaigning for her mom, ask her something like if her mom’s policy of pulling out of Iraq will mean that those 4,000 troops died in vein.

Tony737 on March 25, 2008 at 10:20 PM

Or at least some Butler kids were there. Bulldogs.

Anwyn on March 25, 2008 at 10:20 PM

I hope she gave Billy Jeff an earful next time she got the chance…

its vintage duh on March 25, 2008 at 10:21 PM

Oh for Pete’s sake.

Bob's Kid on March 25, 2008 at 10:22 PM

If they’re putting her out there to play the dog eat dog game of politics, she better get used to it.

What if someone asks about Vince Foster? The kind of people her parents are matters. They want back in. We get him again too you know.

deewhybee on March 25, 2008 at 10:24 PM

I’ve known women who’s fathers acted like Clinton. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Cringe away but it’s true. Instead of identifying with the weak mother, they align themselves with the strong father. If your father pulled all the crap Clinton did with your mother, what would your relationship be with him? I certainly wouldn’t be making appearances for him or with him as she has done.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:26 PM

Chelsea can’t control her dad’s lecherous behavior; this is when Chelsea needs her crazy-racist-grandma to throw under the bus. She didn’t pick her dad; it’s one thing to argue that her father was a worthless perjurer and known felon, famous for raping the office staff – to account for his bad character. But I think it’s quite another to ask her, “So, when your mom lied about your dad having affairs on Easter Sunday – did that damage her credibility”?

Like that even scratched the surface of Hillary-lies.

By the by, that question assumes Hillary had/has some sort of credibility to begin with, something few people will accept without debate (I think it’s reliable that she’ll lie, if that counts). So it was a jerk lib trying to be funny.

emailnuevo on March 25, 2008 at 10:27 PM

Seventy college Q&A’s? My respect for that generation just went up. As alluded to by Brian Williams, I doubt Chelsea would get past 10 before some lout of a reporter asked.

Dusty on March 25, 2008 at 10:27 PM

I cant stand the Clintonites, but you are spot on AP.

From what I have seen the daughter has more class than both her parents put together.

Vigilante on March 25, 2008 at 10:27 PM

It’s tasteless to come after someone’s children about the marital infidelities of their parents or, for that matter, the falsehoods told under oath during the deposition. It’s also ultimately irrelevant because Hillary is the one running for President, not Bill. So, in that sense, I disagree with M.M.’s comment to the contrary, and I agree with Allah’s statement about the “cringe” factor.

Blake 10:26 – Chelsea is supporting her mother, not her father. There is absolutely no basis to believe she is not a perfectly normal, well adjusted, and moral human being; she kept her nose clean and has worked pretty hard in the private sector since graduating from Stanford. That she is supporting her mother for President DOES make her a limited public figure and does allow for her to get some harsh questions, but razzing her about Monica Lewinsky is tasteless.

Outlander on March 25, 2008 at 10:30 PM

From what I have seen the daughter has more class than both her parents put together.

If that were truly the case, she wouldn’t be out campaigning for them. And as deewhybee noted: We get him again too you know.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Lame question. My question would have been; Why in God’s name are you doing this for your parents? Haven’t they put you through enough!?

4shoes on March 25, 2008 at 10:34 PM

There is absolutely no basis to believe she is not a perfectly normal, well adjusted, and moral human being; she kept her nose clean and has worked pretty hard in the private sector since graduating from Stanford.

I don’t know about that. She has had opportunities handed to her that I have no idea whether you earned them or not. And for all the lecturing about public service, she went for the big bucks. And the basis to believe she is nto a perfectly normal well adjusted human being is that she comes from a totally dysfunctional family.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:35 PM

From what I have seen the daughter has more class than both her parents put together.

Vigilante on March 25, 2008 at 10:27 PM

I agree. I cringe just thinking about what she had to put up with growing up under those two pathological narcissists. It’s a wonder she amounted to anything.

labrat on March 25, 2008 at 10:35 PM

Blake, What’s you problem?

pleaseandthankyou on March 25, 2008 at 10:36 PM

Cringe? I didn’t cringe at all, she’s a twenty eight year old woman stumping for her mother. Don’t feel for her one bit.

lowandslow on March 25, 2008 at 10:37 PM

Iron My Shirt 2.0

SoulGlo on March 25, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Then why is she out there stumping for those two pathological narcissists?

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:38 PM

What the heck did she expect? You’re dad is an hotheaded, fingerwagging, holier than thou, prick who’s notorious for scandal after scandal. You’re mom was party to it all and just got slammed for repeatedly fibbing about her background.

She is the daughter of 2 of the most dirty politicians in the modern area, she goes out on the campaign on their behalf and acts appalled when someone has the audacity to ask about her dad having Monica “work the poll” right underneath the possible next POTUS?

Why should I trust her mom to answer the phone at 3:00am when her own house is in disorder. Not to mention Hillary’s latest excuse on Snipergate that she was simply misspoke because she was sleep deprived?

Sorry Chelsea, if she’s sleep deprived now, imagine all the misspeaking she’s be doing when there’s a terrorist attack on American soil while she’s in office.

Brad on March 25, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Blake, What’s you problem?

I have no problems. And your problems don’t interest me.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:39 PM

She is no longer a child…..she is a very active supporter of Hillary. She can either get off the campaign trail and protect her privacy or she can play ball in the big leagues. She doesn’t get a pass to enjoy the benefits of both positions.

David in ATL on March 25, 2008 at 10:39 PM

I say leave the girl alone. She does not deserve to have to answer for anyone’s shame but her own.

thedecider on March 25, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Agreed.

This is a brutal thread, and I know brutal. But there is an element of truth to the point that here she is on the campaign stump, and yet there are legitimate questions of her mother’s outrageous conduct during Billy Jeff’s presidency that are off the table for reasons of decency.

I say err on the side of decency, just this once.

Jaibones on March 25, 2008 at 10:40 PM

She can either get off the campaign trail and protect her privacy or she can play ball in the big leagues.

Nonsense. There are ways to ask her about her mother’s judgment without trying to embarrass her, which the question obviously was designed to do.

Allahpundit on March 25, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Not cool.

aero on March 25, 2008 at 10:41 PM

Okay,great day for the Clintons,hehe, a trifecta i believe!

Here we go,Chelsea in so many ways is like her Father, not
the smut crap, but her ability to answer!

If you remember Bill Clinton was giving a press conference,
some journalist asked Bill a question,Bills face turned red
and Bill said,”I can’t believe you asked me that question!”

On a dime Bill whent to the next journalist and ignored the
other journalist completely!

Now Chalsea says after 70 or so campus’s she’s been to.This
was the first time shes been asked about Monica,so none of
your business!

Gee,I can’t believe you asked me that!

canopfor on March 25, 2008 at 10:41 PM

The way to win elections is to not be as vile and tasteless as the left. If we are going to go after Chelsea, disrespect her and call her a “whore” then we deserve to lose.

pleaseandthankyou on March 25, 2008 at 10:42 PM

Well, who can we ask these questions of? Or, are they all taboo because they embarrass the Clintons? I say tough. Again, Chelsea is no kid. She’s pushing 30 for crissakes.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:44 PM

Well, the question (from a college kid, no doubt) may have been inappropriate and since NBC showed their viewers the answer, why not show the question? Chelsea voluntarily dove into the deep water. It’s obvious that she’s had some coaching from some pretty slick characters (like Carville and Begala) or she wouldn’t be out there. Imagine how the media would treat this if the Clintons were republicans conservatives.

perroviejo on March 25, 2008 at 10:44 PM

She can either get off the campaign trail and protect her privacy or she can play ball in the big leagues.

She *is* playing in the big leagues, anyway. “Not your business” is a perfectly good answer, and more civil than “STFU, borehole.” Noting that nobody ever asked her that on campus before, well, there’s nothing wrong with that either. She’s protecting her own privacy quite well, looks like.

Anwyn on March 25, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Can’t blame a daughter for defending her parents. It’s a dead end subject. That’s a question for Hillary or Bill.

Hog Wild on March 25, 2008 at 10:49 PM

The Boss herself states it perfectly.

Sorry to pile on, but listen up, hon. Seriously. “None of your business” isn’t going to cut it when you’re hammering the campaign theme that mommy has the judgment, guts, leadership, credibility, and steely grasp on reality to lead this nation under fire–imaginary sniper fire or otherwise:

Here’s Michelle’s take

Brad on March 25, 2008 at 10:49 PM

She *is* playing in the big leagues, anyway.

Except people are arguing that she should only be treated with kid gloves on the campaign trail and on this blog. Forget it. The thought of her mother in the Whitehouse and her father being appointed a high level position is terrifying.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:49 PM

The way to win elections…
pleaseandthankyou on March 25,2008 at 10:42PM.

pleaseandthankyou: I fully agree, Republicans are above this
visious name calling and hate spewing.
The left has cornerned the market in that
kind of behaviour!

canopfor on March 25, 2008 at 10:50 PM

Not that the whole thing’s not rather laughable. As if Chelsea wouldl ever say a word against her mother’s credibility, vis a vis Monica or anything else, and as if “not your business” is a good riposte to a question about a candidate’s credibility.

I take back what I said about the big leagues, I just finally read what the question actually was. I don’t see why a question *like* that is not fair, btw. The question was bush league and gave her an opening to blow it off because of Monica, even though it might be a legitimate question.

Anwyn on March 25, 2008 at 10:52 PM

I didn’t see the question on the clip, just the lead on by Brian and her answer. There is no question of course where I fall on this. She is not responsible for the faults of her father or her mother.

It is likely, like most kids, she sees her parents as flawed, but loves them and supports them, even thinking more highly of them then their real worth. Thus until she does something befitting a complete lack of decorum, I think she should be treated common decency.

Spirit of 1776 on March 25, 2008 at 10:52 PM

pleaseandthankyou on March 25, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Billary taught her well how to go from answering a legitimate question, to a starry eyed victim.

THE CHOSEN ONE on March 25, 2008 at 10:53 PM

The Obama folks are feeling a bit sure of themselves right now, aren’t they?

SouthernGent on March 25, 2008 at 10:54 PM

Associated Press identifies Butler as being in Pennsylvania. Speaking of bush league.

Anwyn on March 25, 2008 at 10:54 PM

Does anyone know what the actual question was?

perroviejo on March 25, 2008 at 10:54 PM

No one can make Chelsea answer any question. But posing a legitimate question about her parents conduct while they occupied the Whitehouse to her keeps the issue before the public, the issue being their past behavior and unfitness to have the privilege of serving this nation again.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:55 PM

“No need to rub her face in daddy’s shame”

Egads! Have I stumbled upon the DNC web site?! Chelsea’s shilling for a communist of indeterminate sexual preference who forced Marines to serve hors d’oeuvres to guests, while forbidding them to wear their uniforms. Has Hellary found the foil that makes HA cringe? Finally?

She (Hellary) cursed her SS detail constantly, directed WH staff NOT TO LOOK AT HER and so on, and we are supposed to care whether her daughter’s feelings are hurt by embarrassing questions while she shills for her mother!?!?!
Come on! Saddam had sons, and no none wept when they were shot to hell. “Oh don’t ask Uday if he thinks his dad is a brute, I mean, don’t rub his face in it.”

Ask Chelsea about 900 FBI Filegate, Cattle Futures, Whitewater, the McDougals, Vince Foster’s files, Vince Foster’s DEATH, the Rose billing records, Hellary’s health care debacle, her lies about her trip to Bosnia WITH CHELSEA IN TOW. Ask her if she thinks she looks more like Web Hubbel than Bill Clinton!!!

What are you saying, that one member of Hellary’s CAMPAIGN STAFF is innoculated against tough questions?!

Akzed on March 25, 2008 at 10:55 PM

Good for Chelsea.

Speaking of battle….didn’t she and her mommy dodge sniper fire 12 years ago with 4,000 soldiers guarding her on a Spring Break trip to Bosnia? Boo friggin hoo.

No, she wasn’t asked why her father was a slut, she was asked if her mother’s credibility was hurt during the Monica situation, an entirely different and legitimate question that maybe should have been phrased so that she couldn’t as legitimately blow it off.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 10:59 PM

I just see a 28 yr old woman that is campaigning for Hillary and is basically putting herself out there as a mouthpiece for these losers to get votes against McCain/Obama. She is the enemy.

Lewinsky questions in relation to credibility are on the table since Hillary and Bill are running for POTUS. She is taking right after Hillary with the victim BS and denigrating the questioner.

She obviously wants “experience” in the political game of promoting Marxism and such, so she’s getting it. It’s her choice to do this as an adult and should be treated like one.

Chelsea Clinton had a quick retort Tuesday when asked whether her mother’s credibility had been hurt during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

“Wow, you’re the first person actually that’s ever asked me that question in the, I don’t know maybe, 70 college campuses I’ve now been to, and I do not think that is any of your business,” Clinton said during a campaign visit for her mother, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Chakra Hammer on March 25, 2008 at 11:05 PM

she was asked if her mother’s credibility was hurt during the Monica situation, an entirely different and legitimate question

In essence, the question is to make a biological child judge her parents’ marriage and their emotional response at the point of betrayal. Question is not only creates an improper and unjust dynamic, it has no real world application.

Want to question Hillary’s credibility? Ask Sinbad.

Spirit of 1776 on March 25, 2008 at 11:05 PM

So with a little help from google, I found this: “Chelsea Clinton had a quick retort Tuesday when asked whether her mother’s credibility had been hurt during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.” “Before she was fully aware of her husband’s relationship with Lewinsky, a White House intern, Hillary Clinton said the allegations about that relationship were manufactured by a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” Using Brian Williams’ spin, I sided with Chelsea. Now that the elements of the question are slowly leaking out…

faraway on March 25, 2008 at 11:12 PM

I don’t think she should be out on the campaign trail considering her expectation of privacy (which she is fully entitled to). The one thing I always supported the Clintons on was protecting their daughter from the wolves. It’s not her fault that her dad is a huge assmunch and it’s not her fault that her mom allows her husband to be, well, an assmunch. She shouldn’t be on the campaign trail, but if she has to be….she shouldn’t have to field questions about her crapola Dad and his crapola behavior.
Question: Do you think Mitt Romney’s sons would have to face questions like this? I think not, ladies and gentlemen, I think not.

It’s not like Hillary distance her self from the scandal. She lied for him, blamed it on conservatives, didn’t divorce him, and for all intent and purposes intends to appoint him to a high level position. So, yeah, if her daughter wants to stump for her, she better be prepared to explain why her mother has any credibility left at all.

People, can we think in ways other than black and white? You don’t have to respect the Clintons or their policies. You don’t have to respect their ability to lead. You don’t have to respect Chelsea’s opinions or politics. You don’t have to defer to anyone. Nevertheless, you could still show some class and refrain from asking certain loaded questions of a daughter who was helpless to prevent her father from cheating on her mother. Just once, leave it. Believe me, we are not accomplishing ANYTHING or getting closer to winning an election by proving to the left that we are as tasteless and classless as they are.

She’s entitled to deference until adulthood. Even then, it’s wrong to track her down to ask her what she thinks of Monica’s blue dress (”Did you ever sniff that white crusty stain?”). But she’s on the damn campaign trail!!!

So if you guys are saying that the question was asked to “question Hillary’s credibility” why didn’t he just ask the same question, but us the Bosnia situation? Thats my final point. I thought as Conservatives we could come up with better lines of questioning without lowering ourselves to tactics of the Left.

pleaseandthankyou, you can think any way you want to. But if you keep telling everyone else how they should think, you will get ignored. Really, knock of the “we” business.

BTW, Hunt was on O’Reilly tonight hammering hillary over the lie.

You’re all burying the lead. Look at her mannerism when she says None of your business. Remind you of anyone?

AYNBLAND on March 25, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Fair game?

No. Unfair.

From what I have seen the daughter has more class than both her parents put together.

Irrelevant.

What makes you think the person who asked the question is a conservative and not an Obama supporter?

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Part of the trouble is the press has not quoted the exact question. I’d like to hear the exact words the student used before I declare it a boorish question. In all likelihood it should have been rephrased, but I think the point was legit.

Was it an Obama supporter that asked the question?

Chakra Hammer on March 25, 2008 at 11:18 PM

1. I didn’t believe her when she said that’s the first time she’s been asked that question.

2. Clinton’s credibility is fair game. To distract from the Monica scandal, the Clinton White House engaged in some questionable military operations.

3. Whassup with the head-bobbing?

Why don’t you tell Chelsea to stay the hell home?

“I mean, really Chelsea, you might get asked about that stinky crusty white stain on your dad’s hose bag’s dress. Just stay home, stay above the fray, and you won’t get dragged thru the mud by those eveil right wingers who will ask you to defend your parents’ EVIL $%#$@#! behavior.”
