Great story!

In a few minutes, he was given a Kevlar helmet and dog tags and was promoted from specialist to sergeant.

I smiled, and cried.

Entelechy on March 25, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Sweet. Here’s to a full recovery, soldier!

VolMagic on March 25, 2008 at 10:57 PM

Thanks.

First Monica Seles gets booted off “Dancing With The Stars”, and then this! My tear ducts are empty!

SouthernGent on March 25, 2008 at 10:59 PM

Five years old and already beating an entire party in patriotism in a walk.

Fantastic story, and fantastic kid.

emailnuevo on March 25, 2008 at 11:08 PM

I’ve never been afraid to salute any soldier no matter how young! vntnrse whips off a snappy salute to Sgt Cox

Vntnrse on March 25, 2008 at 11:09 PM

This may be the most awesome piece of journalism I’ve ever read.

Lee on March 25, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Hopefully this young soldier recovers from his illness. He deserves a shot! They all do of course but this young lad has a future as one of our nations finest I believe.

Yakko77 on March 25, 2008 at 11:23 PM

That’s the best story I’ve read in a long time. Hopefully he was allowed to target some anti-recruiting protesters.

perroviejo on March 25, 2008 at 11:24 PM

I laughed. I cried. It became a part of me.

Seriously, Allah, thank you. We need the warm fuzzies from time to time.

sondiehl on March 25, 2008 at 11:26 PM

I can’t believe they had a helmet that small to fit him. And they put his name on it, too.

Blake on March 25, 2008 at 11:30 PM

“America recruiting children for war.”

Typhonsentra on March 25, 2008 at 11:32 PM

Make a Wish is a great organization. My ex’s step daughter survived ALL and for her wish she went to overseas to visit her bio dad. They sent the whole family.

One time she was playing with my kids, playing house, and she was instructing my daughter in how to play you are sick and going to die. Breaks my heart.

Bad Penny on March 25, 2008 at 11:34 PM

Here is another one along the same lines that happened a few days prior.

“America recruiting children for war.”

Typhonsentra on March 25, 2008 at 11:32 PM

WTF?

RushBaby on March 25, 2008 at 11:35 PM

“And a child shall lead them…” This kid already knows more about honor than a whole bunch of people we could name.

Let’s not forget Sgt. Christopher Gaines, Eric Fremming, Pvt. Isaac and the rest of the 1st Cavalry troops who knew what this day meant, not only to young Sgt. Gaven Cox but to the rest of America.

Rusty Bill on March 25, 2008 at 11:36 PM

Awesome — thanks, AP.

I’m both thankful and amazed this was reported by the KDH without any “balance” (aka anti-American, anti-military snark).

Heh. He’s got his priorities straight. Get the Happy Meal before basic training. God bless him.

labrat on March 25, 2008 at 11:49 PM

RushBaby on March 25, 2008 at 11:35 PM

I have a feeling there was some sarcasm intended.

labrat on March 25, 2008 at 11:51 PM

Imagine how much more patriotism and support of the military this 5 year old shows over that shown by the left.

Yeah, damn skippy I question their patriotism!

hoorah read it and weep liberals

custer on March 26, 2008 at 12:01 AM

I wonder how many of them have been speed-dialing Child Services ever since this came out.

91Veteran on March 26, 2008 at 12:05 AM

Fabulous story and even if Typhonsentra was being sarcastic, the comment was not appreciated. Lets all try to resist the urge to be nasty 24/7, if that is not too much to ask.

HawaiiLwyr on March 26, 2008 at 12:07 AM

I could barely read it I was so choked up. I had to walk away for a few minutes. Great story.

Bladerunner1701 on March 26, 2008 at 12:31 AM

Hoo-ah! I’m proud to call you a fellow brother-in-arms young man.

I guess that you can’t help it either?

“America recruiting children for war.”

Typhonsentra on March 25, 2008 at 11:32 PM

Our children of war fight to prevent wars.
Our children of war can be found helping nations after natural disasters.
Our children of war have a sense of national duty and pride.
Our children of war bring peace and prosperity to all.
Out children of war bring justice and defeat world evils.
Our children of war are cherished and honored as heroes.

What do you teach your children?

Kini on March 26, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Sgt. Cox–a true fighter. I have no doubt he will successfully complete his next mission.

Dollayo on March 26, 2008 at 12:48 AM

Oh Dear Jesus…….

“Gaven, who is diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, was granted one wish by the Make-A-Wish-Foundation.”

Wouldn’t it be a sight, that Gaven recovers, and becomes the next John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing
for the United Sates of America?

Now that would be something.

God Bless you Young Man, God Bless You……… and your Family.

Seven Percent Solution on March 26, 2008 at 1:04 AM

As I said at greater length in my comment on part of the post linked below, I think teaching boys early about fighting and killing is probably a good idea in general.

Kralizec on March 26, 2008 at 1:11 AM

Thanks. What a great kid–and what a great military we have. They really took the time to make sure he had an unforgettable day.

The story F15Mech mentioned is another keeper.

INC on March 26, 2008 at 1:12 AM

Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

I pray that this little boy is cured of his illness.

russ2553 on March 26, 2008 at 1:34 AM

Someone needs to make sure this kid gets his slot at West Point one day, come hell or high water, if he gets through his illness.

Or at least a commission as a Warrant Officer flying Longbows.

/sigh

Wanderlust on March 26, 2008 at 1:44 AM

thanks 4 the story lets pray the kid gets better!

GO ARMY!

sko17 on March 26, 2008 at 2:06 AM

At ease soldier, at ease.

And get well real soon.

Texyank on March 26, 2008 at 2:18 AM

Thanks for linking, AP. What a great story.

Rosmerta on March 26, 2008 at 2:29 AM

Awesome. This kid is impressive.

We need to stop referring to democratic defeatists and anti-war nuts as childish. It’s an insult to kids like Gavin.

HawaiiLwyr on March 26, 2008 at 12:07 AM

In defense of typhosentra, we must not forget that we are all here reading AP, Ed and Michelle at HotAir because the MSM is completely derelict in their duties to our country. If not for that central fact, we would not even need HotAir.
This story belongs in the national media, but even if it was picked up by them, the moral equivalence between Gaven and the one mentioned by Kralizec — http://hotair.com/archives/2008/02/15/horrendous-al-qaeda-in-iraq-burns-prisoners-alive/ — would be immediate among the “Berkelier than thou.” So snark and sarcasm must be part and parcel of all this because in a real sense we are in permanent opposition to the liberal progressive dominance of our culture, until things make a miraculous turn for the better, more patriotic and mature.
Really, HotAir is equal time just like Rush et. al. Too bad we need you, but thank God you’re here.

(Just an expression, Allah ;> )

silverfox on March 26, 2008 at 4:05 AM

Hey, if you guys really loved this story, and wish the mainstream media would pick up more like it, then contact the journalist and let him know how much you appreciate it. When we see a writer get it right once in a while, we should encourage them so they are more inclined to such journalism in the future.

Redhead Infidel on March 26, 2008 at 8:43 AM

Be sure to let the journalist know where you saw his story being promoted.

Redhead Infidel on March 26, 2008 at 8:50 AM

Wow. That brought tears to my eyes. I sure hope and pray this young’un gets well. Then maybe he can be a soldier for real. God knows we need more like him. This kid has more heart than the whole left wing in this country.

jdawg on March 26, 2008 at 10:03 AM

I have read that story three times. What a tale and another reason to be proud of America and her troops, especially the 5-year old one!

HotAirJosef on March 26, 2008 at 11:07 AM

“America recruiting children for war.”

Typhonsentra on March 25, 2008 at 11:32 PM

I would expect to see that as a headline on Al-Jazeera…..or on the DNC’s website.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on March 26, 2008 at 11:44 AM

For those who were upset with my comment, Dr. Cwac has the right idea as to what I was going for. I didn’t mean to offend anyone, the story’s sweet.

Typhonsentra on March 26, 2008 at 2:00 PM

Prayers for the littlest Soldier, and some tears, too. Somewhere in the future he will join America’s Military Might…and be a hero again.. At 70yrs of age, unfortunately, I will not be there to see this.. However, through faith, I can see it all now….Some will just have to wait.
