Hillary: Yeah, I lied misspoke Update: AOL Hot Seat poll added

Hillary Clinton finally acknowledged what even Howard Wolfson couldn’t spin away — that she didn’t stroll off an airplane in Tuzla in 1996 under sniper fire. In an editorial meeting with the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, Hillary called the controversy a “minor blip”, but admitted that she made a “misstatement” when it came to the danger she faced in Tuzla. That admission only came after video clearly showed Hillary and her entourage, including a 15-year-old Chelsea, smiling and moving unhurriedly to a greeting ceremony she claimed never happened:
Clinton acknowleged today for the first time that it was a “misstatement” when she said in a major prepared foreign policy speech last week that “I remember landing under sniper fire” but also tried to brush off the entire issue as “a minor blip.” She also gave a revised account of her airplane landing and her tarmac greeting at the Tuzla Air Force base 12 years ago — seeking to explain a picture re-published this weekend in the Washington Post showing her and daughter Chelsea calmly greeting an 8-year-old girl.
In her speech last week at George Washington University, Clinton maintained “[t]here was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base. Today, she told our group at the Daily News that she was informed that we “had to meet this 8-year-old girl,” so “I took her stuff and left.”
The dispute is hardly a trivial one because the New York senator has tried to stress that foreign policy experience is why voters in Pennsylvania’s April 22 primary should chose her over Sen. Barack Obama, the overall leader in delegates and primary votes. And she has placed the Bosnia trip front and center, to the extent that her account of her visit there led off last week’s televised speech. Here’s what she said then:
I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base. But it was a moment of great pride for me to visit our troops, not only in our main base as Tuzla, but also at two outposts where they were serving in so many capacities to deactivate and remove landmines, to hunt and seek out those who had not complied with the Dayton Accords and put down their arms, and to build relationships with the people that might lead to a peace for them and their children.
Even CBS decided to offer the conclusive proof of her “misstatement”, showing the video on its national news program last night. When CBS provides the torpedo, then the rest of us know the target has already been sunk for the Clintons.
Hillary still wants to spin this, as her extended answer demonstrates. She insists that her argument about foreign-policy experience still remains relevant. The meltdown over her credibility has fogged the actual argument in which Hillary used Tuzla, which was that she was so good at foreign policy that her husband’s administration would send her instead of the diplomats, especially if it was too dangerous for the President to visit personally.
Unfortnately for Hillary, she still hasn’t come up with an actual example. She told the Inquirer editors that she visited 80 countries, but that doesn’t mean she conducted any heavy foreign-policy duties on those trips. First Ladies travel abroad frequently, with and without their presidential husbands, but that doesn’t constitute the kind of experience that Hillary demands we infer from her journeys. In all of the cases we have seen, she conducted the kind of ceremonial duties that First Ladies always do, not hard-charging diplomatic initiatives that would demonstrate better experience than Barack Obama or John McCain, especially the latter.
And now the admission that she misrepresented the Tuzla trip in both danger and importance undermines what little credibility she had left after insisting that she should receive credit for all of the foreign-policy initiatives during her husband’s administration. Without experience or credibility, just what can she offer?

So she tried to claim a major role in Irish peace negotiations and got spanked. She tried to claim a harrowing entrance to the Balkans and got exposed. Considering the foreign policy issues of the late ’90’s, I say East Timor is next. Anybody else care to guess?

A Clinton mis-spoke!?!?!? A definition (replace pathological liar with Billarry)and a question….sound like anyone (or everyone) we know in the DNC
Pathological Liar
A pathological liar is usually defined as someone who lies incessantly to get their way and does so with little concern for others. Pathological lying is often viewed as coping mechanism developed in early childhood and it is often associated with some other type of mental health disorder.
A pathological liar is often goal-oriented (i.e., lying is focused – it is done to get one’s way). Pathological liars have little regard or respect for the rights and feelings of others. A pathological liar often comes across as being manipulative, cunning and self-centered.
PatriotPete on March 25, 2008 at 9:06 AM
The thing I really wonder about is why we don’t call these lying suckers out on the carpet more often with video??
If I were running for office, I would be like a college debater with a bank of flat screens behind me and when my opponents or the media asked me a question, it would be show time. I am sure I would tick a lot of people off, but my press conferences would be anything but boring. You know debaters have these little file cards with ammo written on them to counter their opponent. Why don’t serious news folk or politicians have a laptop full of video clips or news paper clips???

Indy –
The problem with Hillary’s narrative isn’t that she made a statement, was called on it by the CBS News video and the admitted her error.
The sequence was that she made her statement about the Tuzla trip, got called on it by Sindbad, who was part of the travling group on her Bosnian visit and then the Clinton camp — assuming that as a washed-up comedian who was probably an Obama supporter, Sindbad could be given the full Lewinsky treatment — they went into immediate attack mode against him. And they believed they had succeeded in discrediting him, since he had no video, and Hillary went out a week after she made the statement the first time and made it again.
It was only at this point that the CBS video turned up to prove Sindbad was right and Hillary was wrong, and I’m sure there were Clinton staffers who poured over the video for several hours trying to figure out how to spin it as shots of a different airport, before finally having to admit defeat and actually have the missus admit that she had a couple of senior moments when she claimed to have been under attack.
Had they fessed up when called on it the first time, the “mis-statement” excuse would be a tad more palatable. But this equasion looks more like CBS Videotape=Blue Dress when it comes to getting the Clintons to admit the truth, and unlike Bill’s forced confession about Monica, she doesn’t have the bulk of the Democratic Party right now willing to believe any excuse she offers. When it comes to Hillary, all the Obama supporters have the same respect now for the Clintons’ truthfulness as Republicans have had since the post-Super Bowl interview about Gennifer Flowers on “60 Minutes” in 1992.

One of the fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives are that Liberals think people are stupid and need the government to take care of them and make decision for them. Conservatives believe in individualism and the intelligence of the ordinary American citizen. Conservatives believe in the power of people to solve the problems of society and make good decisions and that government needs to stay out of their way.
Don’t let your pessimism get the best of you and cause you to go against one the most fundamental tenets of what is truly means to be a conservative.

I think we all have friends who remember past events a little differently than they actually happened–I’ve a very dear friend that does that all the time, and since I’ve heard her misrepresent events that we shared, I am always a little skeptical of any story she tells me. On one particular instance I have corrected her many many times over many years about what I really said, but she likes her version of the event and by now she thinks that’s the way it was.
Well, okay. Take it and enjoy. But a presidential candidate cannot do this sort of thing, as pretty much everything they do is scrutinized–even more so if you’re a former first lady whose movements are documented to the nth degree. If you remember things wrong–in this case very wrong–someone is going to notice and someone else is going to put the evidence on the Internet. Your credibility is toast. Or should be.
This is one reason why I could never run for public office–I would not want every lame word and deed dragged out, commented on, scrutinized, and analyzed. I’m too lazy to be that consistent–and I like my privacy way too much.

What the Democrats do between now and Denver is their battle. The fact that the big media is divided between Hillary and Obama (albeit leaning towards Barak about 2-1) means both sides will have ample ability to get their message out, either on a positive site or showing where the other side is lying, as with the CBS video on Hillary’s 1996 trip.
McCain may never get some people on the right to vote for him, and in that secnario, Hillary probably is better than Obama because she’s ruthless enough to turn half the Persian Gulf to glass if that’s what she needed to do to be re-elected in 2012. But right now all McCain has to do it sit tight, don’t alienate anyone else on the right who are part of the traditional GOP coalition, and let the horror of watching Hillary and Obama push their campaigns more and more to the left in the race to attract superdelegates make McCain’s case in November for the candidate.
McCain’s certainly capable of shooting his big mouth off about some issue or in some gratuitous way that ticks off the GOP base in some misguided effort to attract more “moderates”. But he doesn’t have to do that right now, because the moderates are coming to him, according to the latest polls, due to Obama’s statements and Hillary’s mis-statements. If he’s smart, he’ll keep up the current strategy for the next five months, acting almost like the incumbent, as long as the Democrats are content to keep trying to woo their fringe more than they’re trying to court the swing voters out there.

Looks like a grim scenario, on both sides of the aisle.
The outcome is unpredictable though.
We’ve seen how people voted in the primaries.
Radio talk tried to influence voters, it didn’t work.
Again, I repeat what I’m always certain of:
People vote for the looks, the “feel good about,” the “he’s, she’s one of us,” and now they’ll vote for the Black person because they want to send a message to others that they’re not racists.
I’ve seen White people expressing that view on TV.
How dumb is that?
Is this how you chose the president of the most powerful nation on earth? Based on selfish feelings and interests?
What happened to the experience? The qualifications? The ability to lead? The common sense and wise decision-making?
I’ve had it with those idiot voters.
I had a heated argument with some relative of mine because he is a Republican but he’ll vote for Hussein because he wants to send a message that he’s not racist.
Of course who knows what happens at the voting places? But at least one can tell after seeing Iowa and the rest.
Do you see how Hussein is using the race card and affirmative action?
He doesn’t have to say it explicitly.
Add to that, his hate for America.
The last straw.

Every time I see Chelsea I can’t get over how much she looks like Webb Hubbell. I tried to find the link to the morphing picture, but strangely enough, it’s gone. Perhaps an offer was made that couldn’t be refused.
The far left psycho-analysis mantra: ‘You are as sick as your secrets’ fits here, but this is one thing that won’t be revealed by the Clinton camp. ‘Poor’ Chelsea might do something rash…but when she realizes that her Mother needed street cred with mothers and her dad is sterile from the mumps, (or HRC chose Webb’s genes over Bill’s, whatever), she will love her devoted mom all the more.

I blame their religious upbringing. Paging Rev. Wright!

With no security clearance, how could she become involved in national security issues, unless she wants to admit she did it without proper clearance. That would go over well, I’m sure.
The lady has had a problem with the truth for some time, just that the other side was never believed. But this time there is a smoking gun; a video that has been withheld by CBS for years. She also wrote about this lie in her book, so she didn’t just misspeak. With any other person, this proven lie would give creditability to all of the other witnesses that were discredited, going all the way back to the FBI files supposedly she wanted collected on her “enemies”. Even Dick Morris confirmed that according to his hooker-girlfriend at the time. So does a hooker have more creditability now than Mrs. Clinton?

Sleep deprived? Mis-spoke? It was a prepared speech, right?

You are absolutely right. She did not “misspeak”!! The Clintons have far too many instances when they tell the truth only when they are forced to do so by absolute and incontrovertible evidence. This was one of those times.

And this would be a surprise to everyone why exactly?
Shes a Clinton, and therefore a liar.
Viper1 on March 25, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Absolutely. This one is such a whopper that it’s comical.
The plane would never have approached, much less land in, a hot zone with the sitting first lady and her daughter aboard.
If there had been an attack and it was a complete surprise, with all the US media aboard. That story would have been 24/7 for days.
DuffBeer on March 25, 2008 at 4:17 PM
She mis-spun it.
Maquis on March 25, 2008 at 4:24 PM
C’mon now. It we, the American people who are the morons. The wife of the US President gets shot at by sniper fire in Bosnia, and we just say big deal?
Did it really need to take a CBS video to know this was fake? How in the world could the wife of the US president come under fire and it isn’t one of the biggest stories of the year?
I believed her, btw.
JiangxiDad on March 25, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Odd that she miss-poke the same story numerous times in the past month. They say if you tell a lie enough eventually you believe it yourself.
Buttercup on March 25, 2008 at 5:10 PM
You don’t “misspeak” when it’s in the text of your prepared remarks that you later repeatedly reference. “Mislead” and “lie” are the operative words here.
“Without experience or credibility, just what can she offer?”
You’re missing the point: Precisely her ability to lie shamelessly on cue is Hillary’s strongest suit.
And don’t kid yourselves, there are plenty of her supporters out there who regard it as a core competency and standard operating procedure over those “messy approaches” where you actually have to, you know, keep to your word and, like, commit to things.

Rush just destroyed her with audio sound-bites during today’s show; which is to be expected. Turns out that Hillary has told a similar version of that lie on at least (4) other occasions. What I didn’t expect was to see CBS (Katie Kouric) destroying Hillary with actual footage to go along with sound-bites. Now CBS had this footage for all of this time and just now came forward, but they did finally come forward. Sinbad (the comedian) was the first to come forward and bust Hillary’s balls; maybe Sinbad made it possible for CBS.
Dang, I hope to see Hillary in this race until the bitter end; this is really fun to watch. Talk about poetic justice; wow…
Keemo on March 25, 2008 at 5:37 PM
you are right that anyone who believed this BS story to begin with is a moron.
I mean, the Secret Service won’t let the first lady out of the car at a shopping mall if something doesn’t seem kosher I can’t imagine they would fly into an area where the situation was the landing strip taking heavy sniper fire.
The scariest part is the comfort she has with spouting out and out lies that she knows are lies. I know the
liberalscommunists like to crow ‘Bush lied, people died!’ but his ‘lie’ was believing a German intelligence report and repeating it.Anyone backing her for president has to have some seriously flawed judgment or out and out absence of any kind of morality.
MannyT-vA on March 25, 2008 at 5:41 PM
I heard it on the radio and she framed the story as “I remember particularly” or “I particularly remember”. That sounds a a lot like “seared in my memory”.
The more vehemently a Democrat asserts something, the more likely it is a lie.
Buddahpundit on March 25, 2008 at 6:07 PM
If Mrs. Clinton says she “mis-spoke” about the Bosnia trip because she was “sleep-deprived” in the middle of the afternoon (or evening depending on when her remarks were given), what kind of gaffe would she commit if she were ever called upon to answer the ultimate sleep-depriver, the dreaded “3 a.m. call”????????
