HuffPo salutes the 4,000 American troops killed in Iraq by George Bush and John McCain

I wonder how many of them supported the war and gave their lives for the cause only to end up as brushstrokes in some slackjaw’s anti-war Photoshop opus.
Just a little something to file away for the next time the left acts indignant about conservatives “politicizing” the conflict.

Great, using dead men to make a point. Isn’t that what all liberals do? They take what they don’t own, and claim ownership.

William Amos on March 24, 2008 at 9:16 PM
Ironically, the left doesn’t give a flying sh%t about the troops when they are alive, building schools, restoring irrigation, sacrificing themselves for the Iraqi democracy, etc.
They’re just “dupes” and are only acceptable if they’re willing to be used as antiwar propaganda (Watada, Beauchamp, etc.). Until they’re dead - then they’re political cannon fodder.
To borrow a phrase from the enlightened antiwar movement of the Boomer era, they only support the troops when they shoot their officers.
The new patriotism - hatred of the military.
Good Lt on March 24, 2008 at 9:16 PM
If you haven`t served over their in this war you love so much, you have no right to question their patriotism!
That`d be their standard response, just thought I`d hurry the “debate” along. :)
ThePrez on March 24, 2008 at 9:17 PM
Not really an “opus” as much as a successful run of a script. Much like the Left’s position on the war, this image is a synthetic approximation of genuine sentiment manufactured by a cold, calculating machine.

I salute the hundred thousand or million lives saved from a more serious terrorist attack.
Without this action, worse might have already hit us.
Count your blessings- your people kept alive - by the harassing of the enemy wherever he will engage our troops.
We only need to continue to crush more jihadis, not lament inevitable military mistakes… while being attacked… to the point that we encourage the enemy to hang on.
The enemy should only hang.
“Do not mourn that such men -and women- died, but thank God that they lived.”

This is the clincher at the bottom of the post, revelatory of the mental illness and the “care” the left has for the members of the military whose corpses they’re using for political gain:
Oh. So they’re just interchangeable expendable like that, huh?
Stay classy, HuffPo. Seriously.

The commenters are noticing that there are duplicated pictures, i.e., that the artistic conceit of the piece - showing 4000 soldiers - is not consistent with the piece itself. The artist lied about those who died.
Of course, when the first person innocently asked, “why the duplicate pictures in the image?” the first reply was, “way to miss the point ENTIRELY.” Ah the supportive, principled HuffPo community. Apparently, “the point” is that it’s all right to mislead about matters of war as long as it’s a “progressive” doing it.
calbear on March 24, 2008 at 9:24 PM
Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “dead white male”…
What do you think would be the response if someone put together a 3000-photo mosaic of Osama bin Laden using the 9/11 victims? I predict the response would be outrage. “How dare you defame the victims of 9/11 by making them into Osama! You imply that he represents them!” Alternatively, it would be “Good, so you agree that we should leave Iraq and go after bin Laden in Pakistan, right?”
Another option: Take the 4,000 dead soldiers and make a mosaic depicting some high-level AQI insurgent. After all, Bush didn’t kill them; insurgents did. Another: make a picture of smiling Iraqi children, or that photo Yon took of the soldier cradling the child in his arms.
For the record, I don’t support actually doing any of these. At the same time, it’s interesting that the left looks at the 4,000 deaths and sees only “Bush and McCAin’s Mistake” rather than one of the images I described above.

The thing about these things that always sickens me most is that the person putting it together didn’t just see the 4,000 and start this “artwork.” I can always imagine them with the thing nearly done and just begging for news reports of dead soldiers so they can finish it. If the number ever stopped on a 999 do you think they would throw it out or add something like “America’s soul” as the 000 casualty?

This is nothing but using the tragic loss of a life to make a political statement. How dare them use the images of those who have died!
How the left would howl if some nut job used the photographs of people who had died from aids to make a political or religious statement about gays and lesbians.
This is just wrong and apparently nothing is sacred to these people! I object strongly to the use of my wife’s family member used in this sort of political garbage. This is a disgrace.
I know first hand that several of the people featured in this f**king thing supported the mission.

I don’t know how things work over at Huffington Post but they got an earful. I suspect it either won’t go up or will be taken down.
I find this crap extremely offensive as does my wife.
I used the example of how would Huffington feel if someone used the photos of dead aids victims in a mosaic of 2 gay men in chaps embracing to make a political or religious statement “remembering the lives” of people who have died. They’d rightfully be offended. I’d just as for something other than moral relativism. I also told them they could go f**k themselves so I think that pretty much means it won’t get posted.

William Amos on March 24, 2008 at 10:53 PM
Define respect? For me it is to celebrate their lives and tell their stories. As a veteran it pains me when we never hear or see the individual story of every serviceman that gives the ultimate sacrifice. As painful as it may seem it is a necessary evil of war.
jero_jones on March 24, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Yeah, I know.
In my aids analogy I included something along the lines that of all people Ariana should appreciate the comparison.
I think I prefaced it by suggesting a mosaic of people who died of aids “remembered” (their words not mine) by a mosaic of 2 gay men in chaps embracing. I think most people would rightfully find that offensive to the memories of those who died.
They removed the comparison from my post and have refused to post follow-up posts which repeat the analogy (even with Ariana’s name removed).
So now we know what the sacred cows are, not deceased servicemen but gay men embracing in chaps.
moxie_neanderthal on March 24, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Actually, I think that would be a most fitting tribute to the 4000 men and women who’ve died in Iraq. After all, these men and women didn’t give their lives just for us, but for the sake of all humanity.
In this war, as on every battlefield in the GWOT, they gave their lives so the light of hope should not be exstinguished from the earth.
That’s the proverbial Big Picture that dopes like HuffPo bloglodytes just can’t seem to see.

I just don’t see how anyone could ever think that this sort of a mosaic is ever right. It is deeply offensive.
moxie_neanderthal on March 24, 2008 at 11:13 PM

JustTruth101 on March 24, 2008 at 11:17 PM
It’s obvious they really don’t care about “A tribute to the troops”. (It’s definetely not Art) They’re just pushing a political message. Made by the same type of people who invaded the Catholic Church in Chicago.
Fires1 on March 24, 2008 at 11:21 PM
No you’re not. A Miracle is exactly what it is. One of the most vilified and unappreciated Miracles in the history of armed conflict.
But look at Yahoo’s comic section today and the political commentary cartoons featured… The number 4,000 shown with bad likenesses of Bush’s face as the zeros. Four blood-spattered dog tags with the numbers 4 0 0 0 on them. A family of Iraqis standing among smoking rubble that resembles ‘palistine’ more than the rapidly improving conditions in Iraq, and saying “Five years already? Time flies when you’re having fun”.
Yep. Real quality political comentary right there.
Not. One. Positive. Representation.

No, it occurs to me all the time that this is probably the least bloody war for our servicemen and women that the United States has ever fought. To put things in perspective, we lost about 2,400 men in a matter of hours on D-Day alone. All the countries involved in WWII lost something like 50 million–FIFTY MILLION–lives (military and civilians) by the end of of the war. As you said, every life is precious and I mourn every brave warrior’s loss. But wow! war sure has come a long way. The ghouls at HuffPo wouldn’t know what to do with the types of losses we’ve suffered in past wars. They’d probably die of ecstasy–imagine the amazing collages they could make with tens of thousands of dead soldiers! /sarc

And Huffington Post mocks less than one tenth the number of casualties that Vietnam was responsible for.
The conflict that liberals can specifically be shown to have been started by, liberal corruption expanded and liberals then capitulated, thereby making liberals responsible for hundreds of thousands of collateral communist deaths.
Dense liberals actually think that war causes more death than peace does when the greatest holocausts have occurred during periods of peace.
Arianna Huffington apparently won’t be happy until she’s collectively responsible for millions more innocent lives…through peaceful means.

It is funny to note that I can’t tell if some of the folks that post on hotair are prior service, active duty or have not served a day in their life. However, over at Huffington, it is pretty clear that the overwhelming majority of folks could reasonably be put in the “never served” catagory. I’d also wager that they’ve not had close friends of family members serve, let alone die. But they’ll be happy to tell you how much more they care. Their anger and hatred of Bush and Cheney is proof that they care (more than their evil opponents who disagree).
A “moderate” voice stated that the use of Bush was fine in the mosaic but took exception with the use of McCain as a decorated war veteran. They thought the inclussion of him went to far:
moxie_neanderthal on March 25, 2008 at 12:49 AM
I would wager that the actual number of combat related deaths is somewhere around 3,000 or a little more. This is a point that is often lost on folks who have not served.
The fact of the matter is, a lot of people die on active duty, period. When I was at Ft Benning we had a guys parachute not open, a Ranger killed in live fire exercises and several of hypothermia in Florida during the jungle phase, people have heat strokes, get run over by vehicles…etc….get drunk and walk into traffic or fall down stairs. That’s all stuff that happened in and or around Ft. Benning when I was there.
But it is a big, dangerous deal to move people and stuff around the world and operate. People get killed. As a result, I’m guessing that the 4,000 death toll is inflated because some of those people (statistically speaking) would have died anyway and they are lumped in with actual KIAs.

Captain Brian Freeman
Killed in Iraq on January 20, 2007
Brian was a Civil Affairs Officer who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all the Iraqis in Karbala, Iraq.
He spent months working to arrange passage for an Iraqi child to the U.S., so the child could receive a badly needed heart transplant.
This effort bore fruit after his death.
Captain Freeman did not agree with the war, and did not think it was being waged effectively. He didn’t refuse to serve. He didn’t cry “stop-loss”. He didn’t make himself a media darling of the left. He didn’t run from his post. He served honorably, performed his duty, and made Karbala a better place.
Brian, my cousin, was a far better man than any of these people who dare to invoke his name. These despiccable, morally bankrupt cowards. He was far better, and did far more good in this world, than they shall ever be or do.

I think you’ve got something there. Not just that they “never served” in the military, but that they would never serve anyone period. I suppose most conservatives would agree in the basic principle that people should be accountable for their decisions and worthy of whatever they’re willing to bend their back to earn. Liberals seem to be more interested in a society that is based on balancing the scales by redistributing wealth to poor people via government programs - a concept that isn’t generally shared by people that are middle class and work hard for everything they have. Just an observation. Fortunately, HuffPo’s right to be generally insulting is defended by people that probably came from much less money, but have a wealth of courage.

Obama and Hillary funded these deaths. It’s all their fault.

Using their logic, someone could take snapshots of HuffPO’s anti-war rhetoric webpages and make them into a collage of flag drapped coffin. But we won’t do that because that would still be using our troops as props.

As far as the Left is concerned, the only wars worth fighting are:
-The class war
-The gender war
-The culture war
Also: Lack of perspective much?

Presidents don’t kill soldiers, enemies of America do. That fact seems eternally lost on leftists.
Also, I think the coalition forces have killed something like 10 to 20 thousand al Qaeda. How many of those killed might have been plotting or planning to participate in the next 9/11? How many of those who have not been killed think they can defeat the U.S. now? Not many, I would wager.
Future generations of Americans and people all over the world will be safer because George W. Bush finally stood up to these thugs and said, this time we will not run and hide, we will not just offer more U.N. resolutions and ’sanctions’ that we know you can easily evade. We are coming to get you and we are going to crush you so you do not get the idea that you can keep doing this shit to us.
I have a 14-year-old son, and I know very well that the young men and women who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan are helping to prevent my son from having to fight and die ten years from now. I pray for them every day and I thank God that they lived and died so that my son may not have to.

The leftists want to make themselves as the compassionate elitists, yet they use the faces of the brave men and women for a disgusting political statement. What a bunch of jerks these liberals are.

I’m very sorry for your loss. It sounds as though Brian was a great man and embodied the very best of what it means to be an American and a soldier.Your description encapsulates my experience and understanding of what being in the military and to serve. One may not agree with decisions that are made on high but you grab the bull by the horns and due your best to execute them to the best of your duty and with honor. It sounds like Brian did just that. I pray for his family and his 2 daughters.
Hawkins, I’m sure you’ve seen this but here is a short bio of your cousin.

I think that too. So no. Look at the Battle of the Bulge. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers died on both sides of that battle.
A friend of mine once said, “well WWII only lasted from 1939 to 1945.” To which I responded, “72 MILLION people died during that war. You really want to make that comparison?”

It is astonishing that folks on the left continue to judge a war by its length, not its intensity. To my mind this demonstrates a basic lack of understanding of history and of warfare.
I continue to be astonished that we’d only lost around 3,500 to combat operations. This is pretty remarkable stuff and for which we should all be thankful.

I am thoroughly disgusted by this. HuffPo, I hope gets their butts sued by at least HALF the families who have lost a loved one! That is uncalled for and completely asinine IMNSHO! I would not want my Mother or any other family member or even friends to see my name or a family members name on some trash like that. Totally tasteless, lame, sick, disgusting, immoral and just plane WRONG!
God Help these individuals who slander and profit off the dead Soldier and Marines. Those who slander the dead should be thrown to the wolves in nothing less then their closets full of skeletons.
