I hope Wilders figures it out because I don’t see how it’s anymore offensive than the plethora of Al Qaeda sympathizer sites or crap like http://www.stormfront.org if they can get hosting certainly a film should be able to assuming it doesn’t have kiddie porn (which I can’t imagine they have in a movie on religious extremism)

Yes, I’m aware of what their stated ‘policy’ is. It’s bullcrap. They’re abusing a feature of the DNS system to twist the arm of people that don’t understand such tech. I do understand this tech – intimately – and know damned well they’re pulling a shonky move.

It’s bad enough that NS refuses to host dissidents against terror. That’s bad enough.

It was kind of inevitable that someone would make this hosting/registering error, though, now that I think about it.

On the other hand, what unsavory characters does NS actually host, hmmm?

PS LimeyGeek – they say right on their front page that they put temporary “holds” on some searched domains to prevent others from simply snagging popular searches out from under the original inquirer. It may have been inconvenient, but they weren’t trying to “steal” it – they just assume that if you do the domain search at their site you’re planning to register at their site.

There should be no reason that Wilders cannot transfer domain management to another DNS provider.

Network Solutions are a big pile of assholes anyhow. I found a domain name that was available, and was searching around to find the best deal to purchase it. Searched various sites, but when I performed a search through Network Solutions, they placed a hold on the domain name. This meant that when I went back to the most economical site (GoDaddy fyi) it told me the domain was unavailable.

I had to phone NS and demand they release the domain name they had illegitimately hijacked. The slimy fuckers.

While I certainly commend you for posting the correction (not that I’d expect otherwise from you), it really is a distinction without a difference.

Sure, they aren’t HOSTING the site, that IS a difference, but the same company that will deep six a site because it might offend Muslims are quite happy to register a domain for a KNOWN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION?

I work at the company that hosts HotAir/Michelle Malkin. Given the potential traffic the Fitna movie site could generate (both wanted and maliciuous) the Fitna site would need its own dedicated hardware separate from HA/MM as well as DDoS mitigation protection. We have hosted many significant traffic events, so while it is possible, it’s not cheap.

IMHO, I do NOT recommend putting the Fitna site on the HotAir/MM config, unless you want all of them to crash if the Fitna gets really busy. We don’t want to break HA/MM’s budget hosting budget!

There is really no way of telling if the page that appears now was edited by NS or by the owner of fitnathemovie.com. Anyone can put in links to NS on a page.

However, as Network Solutions has made an official comment on this, there is no reason to think the new page was not put up by Net Sol. I guess.

I have no experience with them as a host. I didn’t even know they did hosting. I thought they were just registrars for domain names. To ban a domain name seems unlikely (considering some of the bizarre names out there).

Just thoughts…

Not bizarre. Just shows that google had the site in queue to be spidered/indexed; but now that it’s gone it shows what is currently there for the domain.

I should have said suspicious instead of bizarre. But I still think a site that has stirred this much buzz wasn’t indexed until it went down. Minutes went by between searches and then it popped up in the results. It just seems a little too coordinated. But most likely it is just bad timing.

That’s bizarre that it shows up now. After the site goes down.

Domain is probably not set up to respond to ICMP requests – as that’s the easiest way to cause a DOS attack.

I performed a trace route to english.hizbollah.org and the domain is apparently hosted in Syria. Here’s the data for you network geeks like me:

The last recognizable step in this path to the site has a “.sy” label, meaning a Syrian network address.

This means that while the domain was purchased at Network Solutions, the site is most likely hosted in Syria.

Artifact of being suspended. Site might not have been live for enough time to get indexed. Etc. Lots of possibilities.

Or, I wonder if bloggers in general can host it, at least for download, until accounts are suspended. Someone on the other thread mentioned bittorrent. One or both of these together could send it viral, and then it is out there. Wilders must have another idea. Could he not go with another host? Probably no one wants to touch this.
