Video: Chris Wallace bashes … Fox News? Update: Obama cheers Wallace
posted at 11:15 am on March 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Chris Wallace joins Fox & Friends today to scold his colleagues over what he says is excessive Obama-bashing. The morning show spent two hours going over the clip in which Barack Obama calls his grandmother a “typical white person” — and in defending themselves, the hosts mention the fact that they played it three times in that span:
I’m with Chris Wallace on this one. Obama’s comment was newsworthy, and deserves significant airplay. Making it the focus of a two-hour block of time? I’d say few news stories outside of terrorist attacks deserve that kind of wall-to-wall coverage.
Update (AP): Obama congratulates Wallace on not getting sidetracked on America’s long march towards a thoughtful discussion of race, which of course only began for Obama himself when Fox News started playing the clips of Wright and forced him to say something about it.

These two get it close, but the real story is that I feel Chris is pandering to Obama going as far as to do it publicly against his own network in order to score the appearance of Obama on his show.
Biggest let down, Ed fell for it. Ed, stop with all the wimpy squishiness. Lately is seems that that Hot Air prefers wearing skirts in lieu of pants. With the tone of this post, it’s slip is showing.
geckomon on March 21, 2008 at 1:11 PM
When we get around to discussing the fact that Obama is a recovering junkie ( or does “recovering” only apply to alcoholics? ), any talk about “typical black man” will get media coverage.
Buddahpundit on March 21, 2008 at 1:12 PM
That’s your opinion, I disagree.
The Clintons did.
AprilOrit on March 21, 2008 at 1:12 PM
Consider the source: this is the spawn of the discredited and dishonest scandalmonger Mike Wallace.
Chris is just another shill for the left: he tries to hide it and present himself as “fair and balanced,” but his true character (or lack of it) always comes through. He throws softballs to the left and mudballs to the right just like the rest of the MSM lemmings.
Chris would be on the front row throwing rocks at any Republican who displayed such overt racism…or had any casual friends or acquaintances who were racists.

Gotta love Chris, I’m with him on this too. It’s embarrassing when they over do this stuff. I know some people eat this up with a spoon and want more but I’m not one of them.

Obama will have many more things come out as time goes on. I have to agree with Wallace. I will only watch FOX News because they are the best and most accurate. However, they do bleed certain things beyond a reasonable quotient.

No Wimpy Conservatives PLEEEZE ! The crap would be hitting the fan if a White Republican said the same thing about ‘a typical black..”

I certainly hope this story was only posted to weed out the liberals-masquerading-as-conservatives who have registered for this site lately. If that isn’t the case, it’s truly a sad day when so many “conservatives” take the side of a liberal bigot. Whatever happened to fighting for what you believe? I guess being nice to everyone is suddenly more important than making progress for conservatism. While I was willing to lay down my life during my two tours in Iraq (OIF I and III), I guess I should now tell those perpetrating mass infanticide upon our nation and forcing socialism down our throats that I’ll just sit back and take it. It’s ok Dems. Be racist. We won’t hold you to account for your hypocrisy. We’ll give you a pass, because it’s the nice thing to do. No wonder the Dems are making so much progress! Ed should be ashamed of himself for this post!
davenp35 on March 21, 2008 at 1:22 PM
Wow, great job Chris! Finally someone on Fox News who isn’t displaying the unhinged fake outrage over this whole issue.
Barack Obama’s grandmother is of the same generation as my grandfather who wouldn’t let us watch NBA games on TV because their were blacks playing. My father overcame the stereotypes and racial BS that he was taught at home as a kid. That “new way of thinking” was passed on to me and my siblings. So my experience, being the same age as Barack Obama, is similar in that regard.
Finally, even though I’ve been a Reagan conservative since 1980 part of me is now pulling for Barack Obama to win this November because of the shameful unhinged hysterical hatred aimed at him by conservative talk show hosts, conservative bloggers and yes, many in the media, especially on Fox News. These so called Christians like Sean Hannity and so many politically like-minded others have embarrassed themselves royally over the past few weeks with their hate filled tirades against Obama.
olympian2008 on March 21, 2008 at 1:24 PM
First of all, to us it is OLD news, as it happened yesterday, but to the morning news, they talked about what happened YESTERDAY.
What are they to talk about for two hours? So, they ran the video THREE times in 2 hours?
You guys are getting stupid and petty trying to defend the black guy, white guilt is setting in and HA is looking to show they are now like the racist who wont forget what happened.
WoosterOh on March 21, 2008 at 1:25 PM
Of course now was suppose to be NOT
WoosterOh on March 21, 2008 at 1:27 PM
I will sympathize with any person who is being unfairly smeared and labeled as something they are not.
Barack Obama is no more a racist than the next guy.
I guess I am stunned becuase I have watched this shady Lee Atwater attack on this guy unfold and I agree with John McCain, I am not going there.
You guys can pick up your torches, march shoulder to shoulder after the monster and engage in the typical filthy political sport of human destruction.
I didn’t agree with it when it was done to McCain and I don’t agree when it was done to Obama.
The Black Panther Story was complete bunk and it is still being discussed.
You only make yourselves look silly.

LtE126 on March 21, 2008 at 1:32 PM
It very clear that olympian2008 and AprilOrit are actually liberal hacks from the Obama camp bent on fomenting conflict here at HotAir. Why would anyone be taking the side of a bigot like Obama?!?
davenp35 on March 21, 2008 at 1:33 PM
I hear you. My twin brother and my older sister, both Republicans, have joined the campaign here in NY.
My sister is our oldest sibling, she was born in 1957, and she is horrified by all of this, well she actually said she was ashamed, and she campaigned for Reagan and the both Bushes.
It only makes Conservatives look desparate that they have to conduct these ugly whisper campaigns.
AprilOrit on March 21, 2008 at 1:34 PM
But Chris is right, what they should be focusing on is the fact that all of this, to Obama, is the white man’s fault and the whiteman has to understand what he’s done and how the black man feels about it!
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on March 21, 2008 at 1:35 PM
Turning the LBJ statement into a “racist” comment wasn’t the Clintons. That was a subtle tweak to paint the Clintons as playing the race card.
Spirit of 1776 on March 21, 2008 at 1:39 PM
Oh, right, this is starting again, ask Red Pill about this.
My siblings have just joined the campaign, and my sister is a very bright attorney, she can see injustice when he rears it’s ugly head. And ignorance in action as well.
I am not supporting Obama, but I will not support unfair attacks on candidates like Obama and McCain, who I will be voting for. They are not mudslingers.
Hillary is another case, because she engages in the Lee Atwater politicking herself. You reap what you sow.

By your logic anybody in divorce court who brings up a spouses infidelity is guilty of committing infidelity, not the guilty party.
In other words you’re wrong that it’s only malan89’s opinion. Obama and his spiritual-advisor/mentor are the guilty parties here, not those who brought it to the worlds attention. In fact whoever brought these racists to the attention of America deserves our appreciation.
AprilOrit, when you try to defend the indefensible you can’t possibly win.
FloatingRock on March 21, 2008 at 1:41 PM
Get real people. It’s a 24 hour cable news network. Things get repeated.
Besides, all of you in agreement with Chris seem so into yourselves. You think that you are the only ones who watch the news and if something gets repeated you yell at the tv because you already heard the story. There are people who don’t watch the news the same time as you do. Some people get little snippets, some people don’t know what happened till later, some people want to hear some things repeated in order to best analyze it themselves. Turn the channel if you are exhausted by repeated coverage. Better yet, turn the tv off and go outside.
If the Obama quote gets repeated, so be it. Chris is in the newsroom, he is going to hear it over and over, he should not be surprised by it. He only did it publicly to get Obama’s attention and to try to get him on his show.
Dude, you FoxNews protesters are gullible.

AprilOrit on March 21, 2008 at 1:42 PM
You’re upset that Republicans are conducting whisper campaigns and are not behaving properly? First, only a few conservatives have made a deal out of the Black Panther story (meaning it isn’t systemic even if one COULD make the argument that the Black Panther story is grasping at straws). Second, this is the modus operandi of the liberal media and Dems on an hourly basis. So if your argument is that people will leave the Reps who regularly work hard NOT to bring up every non-story for political expedience to go to the Dems who do this at every opportunity they get, those people will be viewed as me as being about as mindless as they come.

Thank you for your service! On target with your comments, if this post is not a troll patrol then an obvious question needs to be asked regarding interracial ethics. Has white guilt evolved into a self censoring buffer which precludes any critical discussion of racial issues?
dmann on March 21, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Roger. I am merely commenting that Obama has used the race card subtly just as Bill Clinton did in SC. Both have used identity politics in it’s basest form. It’s a pity really.
The Wright stuff just compounds Obama’s complicity.
Spirit of 1776 on March 21, 2008 at 1:45 PM
YES and the fact that you can have your ass fired in a heartbeat for making the least mistake in the way you address it..or for that matter bringing it up AT ALL! O the fact that, as soon as you make a valid point you are damned as a racist!!!!!!!
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on March 21, 2008 at 1:48 PM
I saw the Wallace segment. He seemed a little overly cranky about it. Frankly, had McCain ever said anything about a “typical black person”, the roof would blow off the dump, and McCain’s candidacy would be buried by the freight tracks where old dogs go to die.
It seems to me that if we are supposed to have a dialogue about race, that simple observation should be high on the list of points to discuss.
Or is this less a dialogue and more a lecture? Just let me know, Ed so I’ll know how to react like a good guilty white boy.

Again another arguement that cannot be argued.
Divorce court? What does this have to do with salndering and smearing people with untrue stories?
When people get divorced there is usually one party looking for a monetary settlement or control of the assets and children. Reasons are there for lying.
Why should we settle for someone becoming or not becoming POTUS becuase of lies, innuendo and misguided opinions?
How about fair minded facts for a change?
I would rather hear facts, not lies and garbage or someone’s small-minded interpretation of what they think happened based on their biased and partisan opinion or one that they read on the some internet smear site, who hates that candidate and has reason to slander them anyway.
AprilOrit on March 21, 2008 at 1:52 PM
I don’t think that it’s evolved. I think it’s been like that the entire time. If anyone on here isn’t familiar with the origins of white guilt they really need to check out some of the writings of Shelby Steele. I think that the actions of the left, especially the more well-known race hustlers, have done more damage to race relations than anything else. If whites didn’t have worry about being called out as a racist just for discussing race relations, and minorities were held to account in the same way whites are for any racism or bigotry or unfair advantage in their ranks, we would probably already be well on our way to making advancements beyond where we are today on this issue. Those that fall prey to white guilt (even like some posting here) and then chastise those who don’t are equally part of the problem and not the solution.
davenp35 on March 21, 2008 at 1:54 PM
Wright should have been thrown under the bus years ago – very bad judgemment on Obama’s part, he obviously lacks judgement.
AprilOrit on March 21, 2008 at 1:56 PM

When FOX News decided to bash Mitt Romney on an hourly basis while giving glowing coverage to their Golden Boy McCain, I cut them off cold turkey with the exception of O’Reilly and Hannity & Colmes. FOX News had proven to me and thousands of other Americans that they simply weren’t worth our time and advertising dollars.
Why is it acceptable for FOX News to bash a Republican candidate without mercy, yet it’s a travesty when a Democrat is raked over the coals?
The double standard has always been the daily fare of liberals so I’m more than disappointed when my own conservative brethren fall for the bait.
TexasBella on March 21, 2008 at 1:59 PM
Why would he do that when he subscribes to Black Liberation Theology. He is not going to throw him under the bus, because he sees nothing wrong with the attitude. His speech the other day stated that loudly and clearly to anyone who was paying attention. His message was that Blacks have a right to be angry, because White America has been keeping them down for decades. And the only way to get back into their good graces and start to heal this Black Liberation attitude is to elect Barack Obama President. That will not completely get rid of America’s “original sin” of slavery, but it will be a start.
So, it was not a lack of judgement on his part. It was a conscious decision. His aim is not to heal the nation of racism, but to make Whitey understand that they are stained with “original sin” and that they owe the Black community BIG TIME. And the only way to start repaying that debt is to vote for a far-left, Black Liberation Theology racist for President.

While I don’t condone lies (and I don’t think there has been any on the part of conservatives as far as I have seen) the motivation for conservatives pushing these stories is clear and laudable. First, they are newsworthy on multiple levels. Second, some people are willing to fight to defend their values. They care about what happens to this country. They recognize that liberalism is anti-American in and of itself and should be opposed on all fronts. They know that if a Dem, especially a socialist like Obama, is elected our nation will move rapidly away from all of the values that make America great.
davenp35 on March 21, 2008 at 2:01 PM
Here’s another interesting fact about Obama’s Church: It believes the White Church in America is the Anti-Christ.
As Gateway Pundit notes, this is probably why Obama has lashed out against conservative Christians.
But hey, let’s just give him a pass on this. Nothing like having one’s President believe half of the country are racists who worship the Anti-Christ. That will definitely be a “change”.
Michael in MI on March 21, 2008 at 2:09 PM
LOL!
I’ve been here since the beginning of Hot Air and have been reading Michelle’s blog since she started in 2004. And as Michelle knows I’ve spent much time helping to promote her last two books both on-line and by encouraging local talk show hosts to have her on the air as guest.
I take the side of Obama, not based on his politics (at least 90% of which I disagree), but because the total nastiness of the unhinged hysterical fake outrage being aimed at him that is based in pure hatred. Just listen to Sean Hannity lately, someone who I’ve regularly tuned in to since his WGST 640am days back in Atlanta, GA in 1995. Sean can’t stand where McCain is on so many issues so he’s going to be as nasty as possible towards Obama. Sean has been shameful over the past two weeks.
BTW, this is my man… a great tribute to him, his great speeches, his foundation and even an aircraft carrier named in his honor.
olympian2008 on March 21, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Wait, didn’t Obama admit that he was a druggie back in the day? Didn’t he claim he didn’t use heroin because he didn’t like the pusher who was trying to sell it to him? That is the kind of lame excuse a child uses when he’s lying.

If you’re able to believe your lyin’ eyes there are a bunch of videos available online of Obama’s and Write’s own statements condemning themselves, not “slander and smear…with untrue stories”, other than what emits from their own mouths. You might want to check them out so that you’re not at such a disadvantage when discussing this topic.

Is the story newsworthy? Yes…
Is it, or ANY political story worthy of saturation coverage???… IMO… no.
There are a LOT of very important stories not getting any air time at all, because of this ONE story.
Economy? Ethanol and how its destorying the economy? (checked food prices lately?).
FISA? or lack thereof?
Obama giving 1 million earmark to his WIFE’s place of work?
Large prtests in Afganistan?
Actual coverage of Tibet?
Mooky saying he lost?
Inflation?
Oil prices and an actualy DECREASE in production in America the last few years?
There are LOTS of very important stories out there that get little or no coverage, while this gets saturation coverage…

Romeo13 – This story actually affects all those other stories you list, because Obama is running for the Presidency and will affect all those policy decisions and issues. Fox and Friends is not really a news show, Mr. Wallace knows that. It’s somewhat open format and discussion. The fact that the hosts got involved in the debate and discussion that is going on across America right now and might have carried on a bit long is nothing to chide them on. The fact is that all Republicans could shut up about this right now and it would still carry on into next week. By not apologizing, and by framing his speech in the larger assumption of “c’mon, it’s ok, everyone has some racism” he guaranteed that it would continue, and I think it was his intent.
He wants that victim cloak off Hillary’s back.
Tark on March 21, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Problem is that this single persons election is NOT the whole ball of wax.
Yes, its important, but not to the exclusion of everything else going on… things that will not get into the typical American’s pool of knowledge, because it won’t get ANY airplay after the fact.
And I might add, your putting the cart before the horse… ALL of these things will affect the election, but the election won’t affect all these things because the President does not have the power to do so.

So when you provide some facts that John McCain has had Hagee as his spiritual advisor and mentor and has attended that Church and agreed with its message for 20+ years, as Obama has done with Wright and TUCC, then we can talk.
There is also a Westboro Baptist Church which says God Hates Fags. So what. There are many nutball churches out there. The point is that a Presidential candidate has subscribed to this ideology of Black Liberation Theology for 20+ years and has only remarked about it when it was politically expedient for him to do so. There is no other Presidential candidate in the 2008 race (save for maybe Ron Paul) who subscribes to such racist, anti-American ideology.

Obama’s judgement seems to be derived from polls. He will adjust his decisions eventually based upon which way the winds blow, ie, he wasn’t really always against going into Iraq. He may have given his speech, but he also gave interviews with differing opinions. He really lost me with referring to his grandmother as a typical white person. Speaking as a grandmother that adopted 3 grandchildren because of their neglect, I know the damage done to children abandoned by their fathers. It seems Obama is devoid of gratitude for what his grandmother has done for him.

Playing devils advocate for a moment, I’d have to say you’ve make some excellent points in this thread, AprilOrit.
For example, just because a guy’s a member of the KKK for 20 years doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a racist, does it? And if the guy decides to run for President and, when his membership is discovered, excuses his affiliation with the racist organization by explaining that he doesn’t agree with everything the KKK says, we should all accept without question that he’s not a racist, and in fact is post-racial, right? I mean, if anybody were to question the poor guy’s word and continued to smear and slander him merely on the basis that he’s a veteran of the KKK and plans to continue the affiliation indefinately, that would be inexcusable and unjustified, wouldn’t it? In all probably there are a plethora of KKK members who are post-racial individuals and only attend the rallies for the sense of community they and their children benefit from. In fact, many of this poor guy’s kids friends probably attend KKK picnics and such and so making the him renounce his KKK membership would be harmful to his children. You don’t want to hurt the poor guys children, do you AprilOrit?
Actually, what gave anybody the silly idea that the KKK was a racist organization in the first place? Isn’t assuming that members of the organization are racist’s guilt by association, hence un-American?

You newer than most here, so what’s your point??
AprilOrit on March 21, 2008 at 3:57 PM
That’s nonsensical. You’re not going to vote for McCain unless he gets a conservative VP, and if he dosen’t, you’ll vote for the most liberal Senator in the entire Senate?
Please.
That only makes sense if you really are a faux-conservative.

I have just stopped reading this particular article and comments, because you guys all seem to be rather nuts about the idea. Get a life. Go on to another article.

It’s the modern story of Frankenstein. Get the monster (Obama) and if you don’t comply (Chris Wallace or anyone who doesn’t march in lockstep) you are part of the evil Dr. Frankenstein’s (Wright’s) conspiracy.
AprilOrit on March 21, 2008 at 4:08 PM
Of course not! Well, so long as you agree with their point of view.
MarkABinVA on March 21, 2008 at 4:11 PM
Chris Wallace’s sucker-punching of Fox and Friends merely emphasizes that he is a student at Liberal U, majoring in Perfidy.

This is a perfect example of why the left in this country are eating our lunch. As so many here have pointed out , if this had been Rush saying that anything was typical of blacks etc. the leftist in the media would have eaten him alive for days not hours. I would also bet that Ed and Chris would have been right there with the left, ranting about his ill advised remarks. Yet, It is this socialist Obama and the Ed’s and Chris’s of the world are wetting their panties because it is discussed for a couple of hours on a cable news show for gods sake. Thats what cable news shows do for crying out loud. It is times like this, when we have the radical left in our sites and what do we do? We apologize and make excuses for them and show just what cowards we are. Well, I for one think that Obama and his wife set there in that church for twenty years with their mouths shut while agreeing with every word uttered by the dear Rev. Wright. I also believe that with his speech and now this statement he has show himself to be the same old run of the mill politician and racist that he is. Was the remark exactly what he meant to say? Hell no, the truth just slipped out, WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!

Actualy, the KKK did not start out as a Racist organization. It started as a group to help the South combat the Carpet baggers who were, by law, given the ability to loot the South.
It became a Racist organization… but thats not how it started.
So you actualy picked a pretty poor example to try to make your point with.

Well you guys can relax because the moonbats has picked up their torches and joined you in the race.
They’re running perpendicular to you guys after Parsley who has they are accusing -of accusing the gov’t – of Black Genocide.
Nothing like watching the Far Right and Left Fringe run to see who can hunt down their prey the quickest.
I hear Parsley, Mccain, Wright and Obama are hiding together in a tree stump somewhere out yonder.

Huh?

A friend assured us that if Obama wins, then the white people will get a strong dose of their own medicine and after 8 years, we can begin to heal as a nation once we have been humbled as a race like they have been. I guess its time to pay our dues for being white because of something that happened beofre we were born. Racism is insane no matter what race you are.

Hey, that is NOT the entire clip. Brian Kilmeade made a comment, as did Gretchen Carlson. Please post the entire clip with the Brian and Gretchen comments to Chris Wallace.
I disagree with Chris Wallace. This is a very important story, on the heels of the comments made by Reverend Wright, Obama’s denials about knowledge of Wright’s anti-American and anti-White sentiments, in spite of his 20-year association with him and Obama’s back-stepping speech. Barack Obama is running for President of the United States for heaven’s sake and he turned on his own grandmother to make a point… Why is he being protected?
Kudos to Steve and Brian. They were correct.

Gee, maybe Chris Wallace is a magnificant bastard like Rove. Now that he’s handed Obama his left-wing “Fox is biased” talking point — and Obama has taken the ball and run with it (ummm, not that I’m suggesting anything about black men being able to run a ball well) — now the mainstream media, if they want to report it, are going to have to report exactly what it was Fox and Friends were talking about when the kerfuffle occurred. “Oh, they were talking about his ‘typical white people’ racist slur? Hmmm. How’re we gonna cover this? Well, just say they were talkin’ about Obama and stuff.”

Speaking as a typical white person, I was offended by Barry O’s comment.
This campaign is shadenfruedelicious.

davenp35, I’ve read all your posts on this thread, and you couldn’t be more dead on. Good on you. If you’re still out there, cheers!

Ha ha Brian Kilmeade walked off the set because of the Obama bashing.
I take back everything I said about Kilmeade, I’m sorry I called him gay, he’s obviously a real man.
He’s hot also.
