Video: Chris Wallace bashes … Fox News? Update: Obama cheers Wallace

posted at 11:15 am on March 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Chris Wallace joins Fox & Friends today to scold his colleagues over what he says is excessive Obama-bashing. The morning show spent two hours going over the clip in which Barack Obama calls his grandmother a “typical white person” — and in defending themselves, the hosts mention the fact that they played it three times in that span:

I’m with Chris Wallace on this one. Obama’s comment was newsworthy, and deserves significant airplay. Making it the focus of a two-hour block of time? I’d say few news stories outside of terrorist attacks deserve that kind of wall-to-wall coverage.

Update (AP): Obama congratulates Wallace on not getting sidetracked on America’s long march towards a thoughtful discussion of race, which of course only began for Obama himself when Fox News started playing the clips of Wright and forced him to say something about it.

Obama has all whites in a Prejudice Trap. He can deliver condescending perorations about “typical whites” and “slavery” but he leaves the real hatchet work to racist demagogues such as “Rev” Wright to blame whites for the high AIDS rates among blacks. We deliberately mass murder black folks and that’s just the LESSER of our evils. Wright and Obama can call us anything they want and they can accuse us of anything they want but even the mildest demurrer is met with hoarse screams of RACISM.

Translation: If for ANY reason at all Obama is not nominated, it will be due to white prejudice. If nominated, if for any reason at all Obama is not elected, the cause will be white racism. However, if Obama should be nominated and subsequently elected, it will be DESPITE white racism which he heroically overcame. Heads you win, tails I lose.

And, irony of all ironies, an Obama victory will put the most powerful whites on Earth in power, George Soros and his secular progressives.

I’m tired of all the race stuff. I was tired of it when OJ got off and the jury said it was to send a message. This story won’t get better soon and BHO is going to suffer for it. I could care less.

Obama can distance himself from the racist Wright all he wants…the real racist is his wife, and he sleeps with her. He listens to her, and she campaigns for her. The problem is, it is difficult for any news organization to attack the wife…don’t want to be mean to the little lady.
She has a racial chip on her shoulder (even a 21 in her thesis it comes through), and she has Obama’s ear (at least), so to say Obama is not a racist…look who he is in bed with.
BTW, ever meet someone with a degree in African/American studies that wasn’t a racist?

Chris Wallace is right – in the sense that Obama is such an empty suit and posing hypocrit that he is not worth more time than it takes to point it out.

I’m going to defend the guy with the full expectation few people here are going to buy it: Obama has a quirk when he’s talking unscripted that I think a lot of people share and recognize. But it’s something he’s going to have to tighten up or it’ll keep burning him. The first time I saw this clip I immediately thought of “You’re likeable…enough” – same symptom. When he’s in mid-sentence on draft 1 of a thought his brain is about two or three revisions ahead of his mouth and he sometimes does this last second editing that can blow the nuance of what he’s getting at and come off kind of halting and herky-jerky. One could be kind and call it “style” but I’m sure part of it is the politician in him who’s not used to having people dissect every word he says.

I just don’t buy that this guy is dumb or racist enough to use the phrase “typical white person” in the way it’s being interpreted. And you’re kidding yourselves if you don’t think the self-styled geniuses on talk radio don’t have an economic interest in portraying it that way. For what it’s worth, if I had to guess, I’d say Obama’s intention was to say something like “She’s a typical person, who in this case happens to be white, and she’s got a certain fear of people who are different from her. She could just as well have been black or brown.” Obviously what came out didn’t convey that at all and was way too easy to turn into ammunition.

Contrast your analysis of Obama’s thought-to-mouth process with that of Condeleeza Rice.

Her brilliant mind is so quick, I really enjoy hearing her speak and respond to questions…even when I’m not interested in the topic. Where most people would stick in an “uh..” or a “ummm” to stall for time, Condi typically responds with two or three well-structured and perfectly punctuated introductory paragraphs, a detailed answer, and a forceful conclusion before the questioner is even able to get the last syllable of his question out of his mouth.

What’s a “Dittohead” on HA to do…?
FAUX guy [Brian Kilmeade] walks and other FAUX guy [Chris Wallace] blubbers…ain’t it great…!

“There’s a headline I never thought I’d write. What is going on with these FOX anchors? This morning on “Fox & Friends,” anchor Brian Kilmeade walked off the set after repeated attempts by the two other FOX ditto heads to bash Barrack Obama for his “typical white person” remark.

After a few hours of taking Obama’s “typical white person” quote and cutting it off—giving it the Hannity/FOX treatment, even Chris Wallace had enough and called FOX & Friends out on it. Now, being kind of cynical about FOX, I wonder if Wallace is speaking out because he’s been crying that Obama won’t go on FNS.”

Darn, this is really, really fun…!

Will the large rotund, acidhead from Florida, have to lose a “little” weight and opt for a toupee so he can go back on TV to give you folks something to watch?

Funny…! OMG, this is really fun!

When the FAUX anchors start to jump ship, only the rats will be left.

America’s long march towards a thoughtful discussion of race

And what did Obama have to say about a FoxNews reporter getting accosted by a Jesse Jackson supporter the other day? Did he call Jackson and congratulate him for breaking up the confrontation and restraining that Jackson supporter before it got out of hand?

It’s about time race wasn’t a one way conversation. You can bet your bottom dollar this wouldn’t even be an issue if Fox News channel didn’t exist, because you wouldn’t hear about it from the other news sources.

What’s wrong with American citizens being informed for a change?

right2bright on March 21, 2008 at 5:00 PM

I understand the frustration with accusations of racism from the left, but doing the same thing back to ’em isn’t gonna make it better. Someone’s really gonna have to explain to me what part of MO’s thesis was racist. A bit devisive I admit, but how in the world can you put it in the same context as Rev Wright’s hate speech? I hate to sound like I’m playin’ “the race card”, but you’ve got to be a little sensitive to the culture shock that occurs to black people who venture into what they perceive as the ‘white’ mainstream. From the quotes I’ve heard MO isn’t really talking down on white people or making any overt claims of racism. She’s mainly talking about her perceptions. A lot of black conservatives, like myself, can identify with some of these experiences. And we shouldn’t be alienated by white conservatives who are out to prove a point. Rev Wright’s comments are fair game, but please don’t try and paint any comment pertaining to race as racist just to even the playing field.

blackpundit on March 21, 2008 at 9:55 PM

right2bright,

It occurred to me after all this stuff that you may be right. This may be all about Michelle and how she feels about America. I mean, most men go to the church their wife likes, right? She may feel the way Pastor Wright feels and Obama may not. Obama may just like the man. Who knows? But it is still something to consider.

For anyone interested in one more opinion. Here ya go. My take at the Houston Chronicle.

If Obama were a white man who attended a white-supremacist church and claimed that his “racist” grandmother was a “typical black woman”, not only would he no longer be a Presidential candidate, he would have be drummed out of the Senate. So why does this bigot get a pass to continue on the campaign trail?!

davenp35 on March 21, 2008 at 11:40 AM

Late to the dance, but I have a bone to pick, here, davenp35. I don’t think it’s accurate to call Trinity a black-supremecist church (that is what you’re saying, right?). A black victimhood church, a race hustler minister, maybe even a black separatist church, sure.

But underneath these loud, whining race speeches, it always seems like an inferiority complex, much moreso than a supremecy thing. It’s kind of pathetic, really. It’s just fear; Wright’s afraid that whites are better, that whites are in control, that he’s powerless and hopeless.

Sorry to play psychoanalyst – I’m not one. But bluster always seems like fear to me, and he’s all bluster.

The part about “typical white person” that I don’t get is: what would Obama know about it? He knows Grandma. But if the rest of his speech holds any particular insights, then the only other whites he even comes in contact with are leftists and sycophants. He’s just as ignorant about race as anyone else, since he declared himself to be just a black guy at whatever point.

Jaibones on March 22, 2008 at 12:01 AM

Well this has certainly been a revealing topic. Reveals how muddled so many people are out there. Reveals some knee jerk reactions to agree with Chris Wallace without taking the time to research the fact that CNN & other “typical MSM outlets” were featuring the same topic on Obama for several hours the same time F & F as they are recurring news cycle stations on cable. Wallace should know better but I think he is perhaps looking ahead to a job as White House press secretary.

Yeah the only CHANGE in their agenda is dividing this country until it is like a Chicago Pizza. Their true agenda is bitter divisiveness, with a topping of racism and a dash of greed. Be careful America!

strictor on March 22, 2008 at 2:26 AM

Wallace certainly lost any respect I had for him with his little stunt. I’m more than a little stunned that anyone is falling for Obama’s peace train nonsense on race. He has defacto embraced a hatemonger and refuses to let go. Does anyone think this will stop if he is allowed to reach the White House.

Almost everyone I hear on television is bubbling like a lovestruck teenager over Obama’s speech. We have a few commentators on Fox willing to take him on and Wallace shafts them. I come to Hot Air and hear he did the right thing? wtf?

DaMav on March 22, 2008 at 4:10 AM

What isn’t mentioned, however, is that the fox people who were being admonished couldn’t slap this little wallace troll upside his nepotistic liberal monkey head. They must have been instructed to treat him as something special.

geckoman, let’s analyze it. It’s certainly not a homonym; one of a group of words that share the same spelling and the same pronunciation but have different meanings.

Fox:
Carnivorous mammal (genus Vulpes) of the dog family related to but smaller than wolves with shorter legs, more pointed muzzle, large erect ears, and long bushy tail.
A clever crafty person.
A good looking woman.

Faux:
False.
Fake.

Nothing to do with pronunciation or meaning.”Words mean things”, after all.

Yeah. In Malcolm X’s autobiography, it was told that the phrase “chickens come home to roost” was used by him in the wake of JFK’s assassination. So Wright was just following ideological suit by employing the saying.

The irony of this is that the NOI used those comments as reason to boot Malcolm from the organization. The real reason was that M. knew too much about its founder.
