US: Foreign fighters flee Iraq
posted at 7:18 am on March 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Foreign fighters have become disillusioned with jihad in Iraq and have begun to exit the theater, US military officials reported yesterday. These fighters comprise al-Qaeda in Iraq’s best resource for suicide bombers, and their loss gives them much less operational capability. AQI leadership has not yet given up the fight, but prospects for replacements look grim:
A growing number of foreign fighters are leaving or attempting to flee Iraq as U.S. and Iraqi forces have weakened al-Qaeda and forced its members from former strongholds, U.S. military officials say.
The trend reflects a broad disenchantment among foreign fighters, particularly since al-Qaeda has lost sanctuaries in parts of Baghdad and Anbar, a Sunni province west of the capital, U.S. military intelligence officials say. …
The departure of some fighters doesn’t mean al-Qaeda is quitting the fight, said Brig. Gen. Brian Keller, the chief intelligence officer for the U.S. command in Iraq. “We’re just starting to see more and more fissures in the morale and leadership of al-Qaeda in Iraq,” he said.
This explains why Osama bin Laden chose to include a plea for volunteer jihadis to go to Iraq. He called it the “perfect base to set up the jihad to liberate Palestine.” This doesn’t make much sense since one would expect Syria and Gaza to be much better bases, but apparently turning Iraq into an Islamist state doesn’t hold much attraction for young jihadis any more. They have seen the Iraqis reject it overwhelmingly, and Osama has to sell it in terms of the Palestinian conflict instead.
That calls into question the entire raison d’etre of AQ. Osama wants to impose a Caliphate on the Arab nations governed by strict shari’a law. One look at a map would show that Iraq would have to be at the center of such a caliphate. If Iraqi Sunnis have overwhelmingly rejected the depredations and brutality of AQI’s application of shari’a (and the Shi’ites have done the same with Moqtada al-Sadr, as Sadr now admits), then AQ has no overarching mission. Osama has begun jihad for the sake of mass murder alone, and now he’s just grasping at straws to justify it.
Potential recruits have figured this out. The resources for suicide bombers have begun to dry up, and that’s one resource AQ and AQI cannot afford to lose. They also cannot afford to lose credibility for their supposed Holy Mission to restore the ummah — because if Allah has not anointed Osama for that purpose, then Osama just turns out to be another bloodthirsty madman.

This is great news.
Iraq will never be stable as long as Iran is run by the Mullahs.
Iraq will be won when Iran is defeated.

So they’ve found dying for nothing seems less inviting than getting a job and working for a living. Interesting. Don’t tell the liberals!

I’d be happier if they went out to a secluded place and suicide bombed a sand dune or something.

The Palestine connection to Iraq is pretty bizarre and far-fetched. I think Osama has Jumped the proverbial Shark!

What do you think Obama, Reid and Pelosi’s reaction to this news is?

Depends on your perspective. Not so great for all those horny virgins waiting in paradise.

One of these days a missile is going to go right up osamas ummah.

This may explain the recent use of disabled women as suicide bombers.

Those who thought Iraq a sideshow in the GWoT and not worth our effort should read this carefully. Whether this effect was planned or not, it follows from the physical geography of the region, the same geography which makes Iraq strategically valuable as a democracy climbing out of the Third World up to the First: an obstacle to people moving between Iran and Syria, a stable nation adjacent to Turkey (hence Syria’s funding of the PKK to create trouble), a moderate nation next to Saudi Arabia, etc.

I am sure the irony of this story is lost on the Democrats. You see, when one of the belligerents in a battle leave the battlefield it is called defeat.
But most Americans are worried about the economy and I now fear our success in Iraq may actually clear the path for the Dems to regain the White House. I would much rather have our victory in Iraq then a liberal in the WH, but in a perfect world I can have both victory in Iraq and a Republican, even one with shaky credentials, as Commander in Chief. The problem is most Americans are ready to go back a 9/10 mentality instead of continuing to be alert for the next attack.
We will get attacked again and everybody will go through the finger pointing, hand wringing, self accusation macabre theater of the absurd motions never coming to grips with the hard reality that there is a dedicated enemy out there who kills for the sake of killing.
Just A Grunt on March 21, 2008 at 8:21 AM
There are two ways to win a war: eliminate your enemy’s ability to fight or his will to fight. In WWII, we won in Europe using the former and in Japan using the latter. In this war, doing the latter gets you the former. If nobody has the will to be a suicide bomber, our enemy loses his ability to fight. When bin Laden shows up on a street in Afghanistan with a suicide vest on, we’ll know we’ve won.

Just A Grunt on March 21, 2008 at 8:21 AM:
Correct!
And this dedicated enemy is determined to win, not just with bullets, suicide bombs, IEDs, and rusty swords but with exploiting the soft underbelly of political correctness and multiculturl sensitivity. Islamofascism creep works to establish the ummah in insidious ways, as well.
We cede our over-riding rule of law and Western justice to the permission of sharia in Muslim enclaves to our detriment. Maintaining our liberty requires eternal vigilance.

Wait, come back foreign fighters. We haven’t killed enough of you yet.

I would hope that this news brings renewed hope and peace for Iran. We have fought hard to bring freedom, prosperity, and hope to them and for their children. I wish them well.
Free speech is not “free”. And no one should be allowed to shout their “right to free speech” and not be made to understand that right is not “free” but was paid for in the blood of others.
This war has cost us dearly in the loss of lives of our bravest citizens. I pray that the Iranians will honor their sacrifice by committing themselves to their future.
Obama and Clinton seem to have a problem with those that fight so others may have the same opportunity to live in freedom that they take as their God given right.
News flash for ya lefty’s, freedom is not a God given right. God just gives us the opportunity to earn it if we have the courage to do so. Courage is an attribute you seem to lack.
leanright on March 21, 2008 at 8:38 AM
Never underestimate the enemy. This is a prelude to consolidation. They have given up on Iraq (Dems will say it’s time to leave, but not due to victory).
So where are they going? To their respective homes? Perhaps at first. Hope their mothers keep them there. More importantly I hope nations in the west keep them out.
They either hope to conduct attacks in the west, or another battlefield like Pakistan. Gaza and Lebanon are unlikely.

Jihad seems so romantic…….
until you spend 3 or 4 months in the same clothes, living in dark, dirty basements, eating rats, drinking warm dirty water, picking the sores from the ringworms, chiggers, ticks, crapping tape worms, ass bleeding from the dysentary all while Uncle Sam’s Devil Dogs are breathing in your ear every minute of every day waiting for that one fleeting nano-second you let your guard down so they can drop you in the dust like it aint no thang.

I think history will reflect that Osama really only ever was a bloodthirsty madman with severe problems with inadequacy.
The global caliphate idea always struck me as severely delusional strategically, and the tactical reliance on suicide bombers seemed just…dopey.
If only Dr. Phil had got to little Osama before he went nuts and developed his cave living-fetish.

Please forgive my screw up referring to Iraq as Iran. I had just finished an article on Iran and had them on my mind.
Once again, my apologies.

In a related matter: Maybe they are going back to their place of origin.
Recentl my wife and I wanted to go back home, Mindanao, but the cease fire between the PI govt and the Al Queda terrorists there is no longer holding, so our family told us it is to dangerous to come – especially because we are American.
On a lighter side, my wife and I snicker at the Acronym for the Islamofacists fighting the Philippine goverment, Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
There are some MILFs I just don’t want to meet.

God bless our troops — so proud of their hard work over there. God bless the Iraqi people too…they have paid the most for Osama’s murderous plans. Hell is too good a place for a horrible monster like OBL.

We’ve already lost the war folks. Hasn’t anyone gotten the memo on that?
Our elected representatives, Pelosi, Reid, Waffles, Murfa Durban, Kuchinich and the whole democrat party have delivered our terms of surrender to AQ.
It’s hopeless to think we could have ever won this war.

That’s all OBL ever was or ever will be, then when things go bad he attempts to throw out the “liberate Palestine” card to rally support (as he has done in the past) and the people most eager to swallow his BS are the Palestinians and lefty moonbat/Ron-Bot morons.
OBL is nothing more then a cult mass murderer!

The writing has been on the wall, and accurately reported here on HA for a while now.
Iraqi’s being repulsed by AQ tactics. AQ using mentally diminished people to remotely set of homocide vests. Young Iraqi’s are being turned off to religion because they don’t want to die young and view the clerics as extremists. The last one I really like because those people are thinking for themselves, probably for the first time in their life. And what are they choosing? A democratic Iraq free of terrorism.

The foreign fighters are losing their morale at the hands of the USMC faster than the Dems and the media can destroy American morale here at home. No wonder the College history profs rate Geo. W so low as a President. He won when they yearned to see the USA destroyed just to appear smarter and valuable when in time of war ALL honor goes to the real men and women fighting that war rather than teacher elites fighting education turf battles at a college campus sinecure.
