The last Obama post of the week, hopefully; Update: 52% who heard speech less likely to vote for Obama?

My Messiah-supporting pal Steve Sherman notes a trend in our blogging lately. Honestly, I’m bored with writing about it, although e-mail tips about new angles continue to trickle in. Let’s see if we can close the show with this one. Not a rant, just a redirect to a rant — namely, Ace’s on CNN analyst Roland Martin’s hacktacular apologia for Wright’s 9/11 sermon. You need to read Bob Owens’s update here to appreciate how dishonest Martin’s selective quotation is, but laying aside the source, what exactly is the argument? That celebrating the glorious karmic payback delivered by St. Osama is fair game so long as you’re quoting Ed Peck, a Reagan official, when you do it? Old old old-school HA readers might recall that Peck has popped up on this site before. The Reagan administration wasn’t the only one he worked for, and the chickens coming home to roost isn’t the only “nuanced” opinion he holds when it comes to jihadist elements.

To come full circle with the quote from his speech that I found so irritating on Tuesday, if Obama sincerely believes the great national conversation on race can’t wait a moment longer, why didn’t he use the bully pulpit of being a presidential candidate to start it last year? Why now, if it’s not just a cynical attempt to distract attention from his own scandal? The obvious answer: Because to force a discussion of race then would have it made too easy for Hillary to ghettoize him as a “black candidate” before the primaries. He held off to preserve his chances. That’s fine, but contrast his approach to race with McCain’s approach to Iraq. As far back as eleven months ago, before the surge results were in and doom awaited any candidate who dared take a hawkish line, Maverick was telling audiences that he’d rather lose the election than lose the war. The issue came first, his own political ambitions came second. There’s a little character comparison worth mulling. And since we’ve already had one exit question today that’ll be asked forever, here’s another: If the Wright thing had never blown up, would Obama have ever delivered this allegedly urgently important, historically significant meditation on race? You think?

One more. How come Spitzer didn’t think to take this approach with his own scandal? He could have delivered the Great Speech on Gender that had been gestating in his soul for decades, born at last unto the world by the shock of him getting caught handing a hooker four bills to work him over. “I can no sooner disown ‘Kristen’ than I can disown gender in its entirety.” The SNL skit writes itself.

Update: See what I mean about new angles? Pay attention to Karl’s last paragraph, as it’s the most important one.

Update (Ed): I generally post on items that interest me. Stephen, who’s a great guy, counted 22 Obama posts in three days, which accounts for a little less than a third of the work AP and I did over that period of time. I don’t apologize for that; it was a dominant story with a multitude of further developments. If more come, I’ll probably comment on those, too. I don’t feel compelled to either write about or not write about any particular topic based on the level of existing commentary that precedes it.

My specific issue with Fox was focusing two hours on one particular development — the “typical white person” comment. If we did three posts on that point, I’ve missed at least one of them.

Update: Karl was promising another new angle in the comments. Here you go. Chris Matthews will be inconsolable.

Most startling is that blacks by 56% to 31% said the speech made them less likely to vote for him. That may be because Obama had some gutsy perspectives on blacks as well as on whites, and black observers of the speech may have been annoyed. But it’s hard to imagine that there’s going to be an appreciable retreat by blacks from the Obama column.

Democrats disapproved 48% to 28%, which looks sobering for Obama on first glance, but might portend otherwise. If blacks irritated by Obama’s remarks will return to the fold, than impressing whites is probably a more vital read on the numbers. And Democratic whites were more sympathetic with the speech’s message than black ones.

The disturbing numbers for Obama are the independent voters. By 56% to 13%, they said they’re less likely to vote for him because of the speech.

Read the Politico story about the bar in Pennsylvania if you haven’t yet.

Obama is surely becoming a tiresome bore, although I will admit that he is a master of butt covering. Then again what do I know; I’m just a “typical white person”.

Exit question: Does AP take the left over stories, hide them in plastic easter eggs, and then invite his fellow bloggers in to find them?

Can I make a prediction about one of the first stories from next week? The PA state site that allows you to change your party registration is down, and has been for days. And in a possibly related development, the downloadable mail-in form site is slammed. The deadline is Monday.

As far back as X, … and doom awaited any candidate who dared take an [unpopular] line [the war], “the M.” was telling audiences [what he thought]. The issue came first, his own political ambitions came second. There’s a little character comparison worth mulling.

I agree.

amerpundit on March 21, 2008 at 5:21 PM

That is the standard response of the Obama campaign to any controversy, as anyone trying to report on Obama’s relationship with Tony Rezko will tell you. Obama will not answer press inquiries until the establishment media turns up the heat to the point where he feels compelled to do so. That pattern should trouble people far beyond those concerned about the degree to which Obama susbscribes to Black Liberation Theology.

Isn’t that just being a smart politician. Why fan the flames if they will die out on their own?

By the way, this story has at least one more week of life in it. (even if Drudge insists on ignoring it)

Here’s a test for the Wright apologists:

I’ll agree to forget about the whole Wright thing if we can publish the entire sermon in the national news media, with “white” changed to “black” throughout, and attribute it to a long-time preacher friend of McCain….without the entire MSM and all the usual left-wing suspects going nuclear for a month or more!!!

Bet they can’t help themselves…even if they know it’s a hoax set up to test them!

AP,

Thanks for the link. Sadly, I’ll have another semi-new angle up in about an hour at Protein Wisdom.

bnelson44,

Obama’s reflexive stonewalling is of much greater degree than most pols. He’s worse than the Clintons. On Rezko, he stonewalled the local media even on completely non-incriminating matters. This is the guy who walks out of a presser, saying, “Guys, I’ve already answered eight questions…”

Why would you listen to the scoldings of an Obama supporter to stop writing bad things about him?

scatbug on March 21, 2008 at 5:35 PM

You know, I couldn’t stand Mitt Romney the least little bit, but I’ll give him credit ~ he took the whole Mormon thing by the horns. Innuendo and rumor were crawling up his sphincter until he attempted to reassure the vast majority of Americans who think they’re some kind of alien thing. I would propose that, in the eyes of Joe SixPack, Black Liberation blahblah also arrived via spaceship and those Mormons haven’t said or done anything in a hundred years as hateful as Rev. Wright sputtered EVERY week, in THIS decade.

Obama didn’t try explaining that, you’ll notice. If he gets the nomination, I’ll venture that Joe SixPack notices, too.

And starts to wonder what he ever did in his lifetime to make a presidential candidate worship where they hate.

Maybe he’ll ask his friends at work. “Whud I do? Them people’s hateful crazy!”

I hope so.

HawaiiLwyr on March 21, 2008 at 5:39 PM

Hey, since Steve Sherman’s here, and he thinks Obama’s association with the Rev. Wright is no big deal (check our good pal Commissar’s earlier posts), perhaps he can explain why it he thinks anyone gleefully dancing around and cheering 9/11 like he was Ward friggin’ Churchill is acceptable, and why he thinks it’s no big deal that a presidential candidate is hanging around with that kind of vermin. How ’bout it, Commissar?

Hollowpoint on March 21, 2008 at 5:41 PM

I hope that the focus will get to the Black Liberation Theology and Marxism. That is a VERY serious issue I have with Obama! His wrong Rev. Wright is just more evidence that Obama is a marxist and he will destroy this republic if he is elected. Hillary will screw it up, but Obama will DESTROY it!!

Personally, I’m not bored yet by all the Obama stuff. Maybe I should be, but hearing the sermons by Rev. Wright were certainly eye-opening for me. For a 40yr. old white person who’s been force-fed the pc crap their whole life, I’m a bit pissed to see the way this has been turned around and is being used against me. And I have kids, do my kids have to deal with this garbage as well?

frankj on March 21, 2008 at 6:36 PM

Well, AP, bored or not, every post on HA about this issue has brought, I think, a significant new insight to the overall narrative. There has been little redundancy here, and the parts that have been repetitive, are usually only so because a refreshing of previous points are needed for the new angle to build upon.

Weight of Glory on March 21, 2008 at 6:37 PM

The disturbing numbers for Obama are the independent voters. By 56% to 13%, they said they’re less likely to vote for him because of the speech.

Obama:

“I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.”

Uh, yeah, you can.

amerpundit on March 21, 2008 at 6:56 PM

Don’t get bored writing about this. Obama is a flim-fam man the likes we have not seen in a while; kind of a modern day Huey Long. The guy is not only an enabler of racism and bigotry and Jew hatred, but he is an out and out liar. If we have to write every day between now and November to keep this guy out of the Whitehouse, it is not only worth it is required. Who said keeping liberty was easy?

georgealbert on March 21, 2008 at 7:07 PM

I think the only angle left unexplored is the teachings of the church itself. “Mother” country (hasn’t been mentioned by Obama or the media, that I can see), black liberation theology (no one is touching that one) and a “non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA”. The media is looking at the trees and not seeing the forest.

Obama had some gutsy perspectives on blacks

Really? What specifically were those “gutsy perspectives on blacks” that I missed when I listened to his speech? Did Obama ask blacks to accept responsibility for the high numbers of single-parent families in their community (and the high rates of teen pregnancies, STD’s, etc.)? Did he ask them to accept responsibility for the high crimes rates in their community, and the high rate of black-on-white violent crimes? Did he ask them to accept responsibility for the high drop-out rates in their community? Did he suggest terminating those resentment-breeding affirmative action and racial preference programs?

I heard Obama lecture typical white people like me that we need to be more understanding of righteous black anger, and that we need to be spending a lot more money on programs that benefit black communities, but I sure didn’t hear any “gutsy perspectives” about blacks’ reciprocal responsibilities.

Please enlighten me as to what I missed.

So, if you add the ‘among black voters’ poll numbers a different way… 52% are less likely to vote for him while 46% are more likely to vote for him or were already going to vote for him, with 2% who having no opinion. Taking into account those who have no opinion and the margin of error at 3.2%, the poll is pretty much inconclusive as to which side has a majority.

It was a total, overload.. it seems..(He mostly listens to sports on Sirius radio, but recently he was listening to Fox News on there i guess.. )

Put it this way, no way in hell could you get him to vote for Obama.

Chakra Hammer on March 21, 2008 at 8:22 PM

“I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.”

You can denounce his wrongs and correct them, admit and take responsibility, when you are wrong.

Keeping Rev. Wrongs cycle of victimhood going is NOT what the black community needs especially the “inner city black community”, this is supposed to be a Church, forgiveness , redemption and love should be taught.

Not to preach hate, make victims and make people feel hopeless as though they are trapped in a society that does not want them.

Chakra Hammer on March 21, 2008 at 8:30 PM

Most startling is that blacks by 56% to 31% said the speech made them less likely to vote for him. That may be because Obama had some gutsy perspectives on blacks as well as on whites,

The last Obama post of the week, hopefully; Update: 52% who heard speech less likely to vote for Obama?

I seriously doubt it, it’s only Friday.

Hog Wild on March 21, 2008 at 11:28 PM

I hope this controversy continues even after it’s become clear that Obama has lost the nomination. He has inadvertently revealed a cancer which has metastasized within the USA with too little recognition or focus over the years. If we are to truly emerge into a post-racial America the hatred being preached in some of these mainstream black churches and similar organizations, such as the Nation of Islam, has got to stop or be marginalized the same way the KKK and neo-Nazi organizations has been within the white community.

It may be wishful thinking on my part but now that more American’s have become aware of this problem perhaps these preachers of hate will finally be ostracized, and this in turn should lead to significant new strides in race relations and improvements within the black community itself. Unfortunately it will probably take further decades to undo the damage that has been caused by the likes of Obama’s church and similar hate-groups, but it must be done. At least the process of healing within the affected parts of the black community may finally begin. Hopefully we will hear more about these hate groups in the coming weeks and months even after Obama is no longer a factor in the election.

That is a very accurate politically incorrect comparison.

I hope that this controversy obliterates the PC taboos that until now have prevented this problem from being debated and progress from being made. The ice has been broken and people are more comfortable discussing this issue now, I hope, and it’s time that every last racist group is kicked into the shadows where it belongs where they will hopefully wither and die.

FloatingRock on March 22, 2008 at 12:04 AM

Honestly, I’m bored with writing about it,

I have reached the point where I am am just kicking back and enjoying the fireworks.

Dems attacking Dems.

Washington post calling Hillary a liar.

DailyKos banning all pro Hillary posts

Dems kneecapping Hillary with the do overs (and attacking themselves when it comes to NH)

GF calling Obama a racist.

Hillary “sleeping girl” going after Hillary.

Obama attacking his grandmother.

Obama trying to distance himself from Rev Wright by comparing him to a crazy uncle.

So many people have been thrown under the bus that I am starting to wonder if there is any room left between the axles and the pavement.

F15Mech on March 22, 2008 at 12:15 AM

When racists spout “G-d damn Amerika”,
Obama wouldn’t stand up for us here in our own back yard.
On the worlds stage when racists chant “Deth to Amerika” and are possibly armed with nuclear weapons.
Do you think that Obama will stand up for us then?
A viper does not stand, it slithers.
Obama had a chance to repudiate the racist bigots that surround him. Instead he preferred to give pathetic excuses.
Shame on you Obama, shame on you.

I have a sister with 2 kids, I wonder if they think of me as the “crazy uncle…”?

NA… I think my “libertarian”, brother would get that moniker, and not just because hes gay either… He is “crazy” >:D

I have 2 brothers..

(Or it could be my other brother, that gets really upset during football games… he’s a Bears Superfan at it’s worst)

Even though, I cited by brothers “ills”, I bet that I’m considered the “Crazy Uncle”. >:D

I have a twisted sense of humor, that may not come across in, posts.. :\

Also, when I was younger I was umm… “wild”, very “wild”
(fights and stuffs, etc. and all that etcs..)

I hear you my sense of humor is the same.

F15Mech on March 22, 2008 at 1:04 AM

Is Michelle Obama a “typical black person”? Is that a fair question or is THAT twisted? ha ha

DfDeportation on March 22, 2008 at 1:24 AM

I doubt that I will be the last word in the Obama drama, but here’s my 2 cents worth.
This man is bi-racial, but it sure don’t seem that way, does it?

OneEyedJack on March 22, 2008 at 1:50 AM

Queen - 1975

Take good care of what you’ve got
My father said to me
As he puffed his pipe and Baby B.
He dandled on his knee
Don’t fool with fools who’ll turn away
Keep all Good Company
Oo Hoo Oo Hoo
Take care of those you call your own

(grandmother)

And keep Good Company

Reverend Wright

So Obama didn’t listen to his grandparents and doesn’t take care of them or respect them, and the company he keeps - If I kept that type of company I would be in jail or should be in jail.

Can’t wait until Mickey O goes nuclear and puts the final nail in the coffin.

rplat, Obama is surely becomeing a tiresome bore.

I’m still laughing. Great post.

2theright on March 22, 2008 at 7:37 AM

On of the things I have never understood about such poll questions; If before the speech the chance of me voting for Obama was 0 percent, and after the speech the chance was still 0 percent, do I answer, the same, or less likely?

Dasher on March 22, 2008 at 8:08 AM

Allah sez:

The last Obama post of the week, hopefully;

Not likely, The Candidate of Perpetual Outrage is about to address a townlhall meeting. Something about Hillery and Tailgunner Joe.

Exit question: Why aren’t you in church Barry. It’s Easter Sunday.

Allah has an excuse, what’s yours?

dinasour on March 22, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Oops. I was off yesterday and it seems like Sunday

I’m glad I caught that before I went to work tomorrow wondering, “Why is the traffic so light”.

So incredibly well said. The accurate diagnosis of the extent that hatred and separatism still exists in our country, as revealed by Obama’s candidacy, contains the kernel of a true legacy of hope and healing for our country.
