Geraldine Ferraro: Wright a “racist bigot”

posted at 4:00 pm on March 20, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Turnabout is fair play, as Barack Obama and his campaign found out today. Ten days after demanding the resignation of Geraldine Ferraro for her “divisive” comments on race, Ferraro launched another broadside at the Obama campaign. Calling Wright a “racist bigot,” she criticized Obama for his own failure to address divisiveness:

Former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro said today that she objected to the comparison Sen. Barack Obama drew between her and his former pastor in his speech on race relations Tuesday.

In the speech, Obama sought to place the inflammatory remarks of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright in a broader context, in part by placing them on a continuum with Ferraro’s recent remark to the Daily Breeze that Obama is “lucky” to be black.

“To equate what I said with what this racist bigot has said from the pulpit is unbelievable,” Ferraro said today. “He gave a very good speech on race relations, but he did not address the fact that this man is up there spewing hatred.”

On Tuesday, I pointed out the hypocrisy of Obama’s speech when it came to how it handled Ferraro’s comments. While not exactly exhibiting political sense, nothing of what Ferraro said came close to the volcanic demagoguery of Jeremiah Wright. Yet Obama chose to have his campaign go into hyperventilating outrage over Ferraro while excusing the racist and anti-American rhetoric of his pastor, spiritual mentor, and political adviser.

Obama may wish that he hadn’t chased Ferraro out of the Hillary Clinton campaign for another reason other than the obvious hypocrisy. She no longer has to worry about how her speech reflects on Hillary, and so Ferraro is much freer to speak her mind on this issue. Calling Wright a racist bigot may just be the opening stanza for Ferraro, who clearly is not in the mood for reconciliation. Ferraro will keep this story alive in the headlines until Obama backs off of the comparisons and apologizes, or until he winds up losing the nomination for this and other missteps in the controversy.

This isn’t going away. If Ferraro doesn’t get appeased, it may have only just started. (via The Politico)

That’ll be fine. The ticket will be Gore/Obama, with Gore being carried high on a gilded throne, being fanned with palm leaves, and Barry trotting along behind carrying the water jug. That scenario ought to really set the groupies’ hair on fire.

You are hilarious a capella!
No matter WHO is nominated, if it ain’t BO, expect riots in the streets and about 1% of the blacks voting.
They will claim it was stolen even if the Wright Rev told them to line up himself!

The best part would be going over to Kosland and making fun of them!

ArmyAunt on March 20, 2008 at 6:46 PM

Oh and Kos himself is a huge supporter of Obama, if Hillary gets the nod, look for him to be pissing himself trying to get back into her good graces.

ArmyAunt on March 20, 2008 at 6:46 PM

Y’know, I disagree with Gerry on just about everything. Most of the vitiolic bile she spews whenever asked her opinion about, well, any position or person she didn’t agree with has made me sick to my stomach on many occasions,
BUT, I’m going to give her props on this one.

Most public figures, when slapped with the race card, will scurry away like a whipped dog and, more often than not, become appologetic over-compensators. Gerry, on the other hand, had to be dragged away, and now she’s back with a baseball bat swinging for the fences.

Rock on, Gerry.

This is HUGE…oh how I hope Obama gets the nomination. Wright + typical white person + Hamas = John McCain wins.

If Geraldine keeps telling the truth, she’s going to have no choice but to change parties.

Delicious.

Can you imagine Gerry switching parties and then writing a book about her conversion?

OPERATION CHAOS

misterpeasea on March 20, 2008 at 7:32 PM

And this won’t be the last from Gerry. Being critical of her was the worst mistake Obama has made. He should have laughed it off and invited her to brunch. Charmed her and made her his confidante.
But the temptation to use his race, once again, was just too easy. Once again Obama took the path of least resistance. It had always worked for him before! He’s exposing himself for the shallow individual that he really is. DD

I. Love. This. Ferraro called Barry on his lack of experience and points out that he is a candidate only because of his minority status - something Hillary could never do, because she’s in the same exact boat.
So Barry implies that she’s racist and pisses her off, guaranteeing more refreshing frank honesty from Mrs. Ferraro! Bad move Barry - she has the upper hand, not being constrained by a dishonest narrative the way you are. Dick Morris had an interesting insight in Real Clear Politics yesterday:

Wright’s rantings are not reflective of Obama’s views on anything. Why did he stay in the church? Because he’s a black Chicago politician who comes from a mixed marriage and went to Columbia and Harvard. Suspected of not being black enough or sufficiently tied to the minority community, he needed the networking opportunities Wright afforded him in his church to get elected. If he had not risen to the top of Chicago black politics, we would never have heard of him. But obviously, he can’t say that.So what should he say?

I wonder if Barry thought that his speech on Wright would receive the same positive reaction as Mitt’s religion speech, and the issue would be put to rest.

Dork B. on March 20, 2008 at 8:03 PM

This Rev. Wright preaches sedition and treason in wartime, and his opaque, puddle-eyed disciple excuses it. I blame us. Had we the grim republican virtue of our forefathers, they’d both have been tarred & feathered in short order.

Aren’t you forgetting that she too was only chosen for VP based on her gender. She had only been in congress something like 5 years before she ran. Some commenter above said that she has acknowledged that, but I didn’t know that and haven’t seen the quote. So to me her narrative is not really more pure than Hillary’s or Barry’s, at least when it comes to putting identity ahead of qualifications.

Well yes, we’re victims of our success. Mature, affluent liberal democratic societies fail in time. The scenario you paint would more likely happen in China today. In 100 years, they too may have a failing, wealthy, liberal society. It has happened there before I believe.

I’m sure Morris is partly right, but Obama has more driving him than just run of the mill Chicago politics networking. He’s a committed Marxist and for some reason needs validation as an angry black man. The more I read about his background and associates, the more he begins to resemble many of the African Marxist dictators who were schooled in Russia and participated in the power grabs after Africa colonies gained independence, with the resulting economic disasters when Marxist totalitarianism was imposed. I know that’s a bit of a stretch, but his economic promises have that flavor, plus he’s a hundredfold smarter and more polished than your average African goon dictator. I think he has underestimated the critical thinking ability of the American voting public and that has done him in. He is a scary guy.

Ferraro pointed out that her candidacy would have not been possible had her name been Gerry Ferraro, implying that her gender was the main reason she was invited on the ticket that year. I think it was the same appearance (on FOX?) on which she pointed out his lack of experience and that his race was his ultimate qualification.

But you guys have followed this closer than I have, because I have thought that none of this Wright business matters to his supporters at all. It possibly could bloody him up for McCain a bit; but again, the Dems will rally behind this guy no matter what his Pastor says. Maybe it could send a few undecideds McCain’s way…I guess McCain is polling higher than Barry and Hill, or was.

*Sigh* I guess it’s time to admit that I’m burned out on this election.

“I said in large measure, because he is black. I said, Let me also say in 1984 — and if I have said it once, I have said it 20, 60, 100 times — in 1984, if my name was Gerard Ferraro instead of Geraldine Ferraro, I would never have been the nominee for vice president,” she said.

I said:

It’s pretty hypocritical of Ferraro to be launching this attack against Wright at this time, calling him a “bigot” and whatnot.

Ferraro has been in the Democratic Party for a long, long time and she has to have heard this kind of speech from black leaders before. I would assume that she has heard it several times before. She’s been paling around with people like Wright for decades. Yet, she never felt the need to point the racism until now.

She was willing to abide the racism as long as it got the Democratic party black votes, but now that the racist is baking her opponent, she feels compelled to show her distain for the pastor.

29Victor on March 20, 2008 at 4:40 PM

And you said:

She’s been paling around with people like Wright for decades.[citation needed]

The only thing I can guess you are referring to his if she never spoke up when Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton made racist comments. I don’t get the “paling around” claim. So if she was a ‘good democrat’ and practiced her version of Reagan’s 11th commandment, and never spoke ill of democrats - why does this have to be hypocritical?

wise_man on March 20, 2008 at 4:45 PM

By “paling around” I don’t mean that they’re playing softball together after hanging out at the theater. I mean political paling around.

People like Wright are part of the ugly, hateful underbelly of the Democrat party. These ideas that Wright is expressing aren’t something isolated to him or his church, they are opinions overtly held by a sizable segment of black activist Democrats and have been for decades. They are the elephant in the Democrat’s room right along with the anti-war protesters that hate soldiers and the Kos Kiddes that hate America.

As a source, I cite Obama’s speech. He, himself, said that this was part of black culture in the U.S. I would also cite the black commentators that have been defending his & making excuses for Wright’s remarks for the last two days.

There is a difference between Reagan’s 11th commandment about not attacking Republicans on policy and this. Antisemitism, bigotry, anti-Americanism and other hate speech are expunged from the Republican Party as soon as they are spotted, not ignored for political gain. Which is what she and other Democratic Politicians have been doing for decades.

Ferraro didn’t just fall off of the turnip truck. Anyone who pays attention to the news or reads any recent history books knows about ideas like Wright’s and that people who hold those ideas and similar make up a sizable Democrat voting block. Ferraro didn’t just fall off of the turnip truck. She’s not some bright-eyed idealist fresh out of college. She is a political insider. She was a Congresswoman and candidate for Vice President. She knew the bigotry & hatred was there staring her straight in the face and she ignored it, and she didn’t just ignore it, she profited politically from it.

But now, when a finger has been pointed at her, when the evil has been exposed and she has been compared to it directly. Now out comes the liberal outrage, now she is willing to call it what it is, what she has known it to be for a long, long time.

29Victor on March 20, 2008 at 10:14 PM

SuperCool on March 20, 2008 at 10:55 PM

You make some valid points, 29Victor.

Ferraro made her remarks about Obama’s race also to point out his thin resume. She recognized that her own way back when was equally thin and that she was being used for identity politics reasons.

For some reason, Hillary! supporters such as Ferraro do not see that the Madame of the Mao pantsuit is just as ill-credentialed to be president.

Obama has a lot of baggage that deserves scrutiny just as does Hillary! Obama’s financial and influence connections with Rezko, his reliance on father-figure mentors such as the Communist Davies(?)/Davis(?) in his youth and Pastor Wright with his black separatist grievances and anti-American diatribes for 20 years, and his oblique connections with the Kenyan Ondinga raise a lot of red flags about an easily manipulable and manipulating candidate.

His bill to send a sizable amount of our GDP for the Millennial Poverty Act was shuffled with expedience through the Senate by his buddies in the Foreign Relations Committee to add to his resume as capable in the world arena. (BTW I believe that the bill has passed in the House. Hold on to your wallets.)

Obama has been noticeably absent from his senatorial duties throughout his campaign season, failing to show up for some critical votes that would demonstrate exactly what he stands for. I believe, also, that he has not convened one of the committees on which he serves.

Essentially, he adds up to being a token candidate.,, and probably a dangerous one to our economy and to our national security/foreign policy.

As far as a Gore/Obama08 ticket, there were bumper stickers floating that idea at least a year ago. They were photographed on some pricey gas-guzzlers at a global warming event. (Sorry. I lost the file photo.)

The idea is not far-fetched either. The Gore-bots would love to extract their revenge for what they deludedly thought was stolen from themselves in 2000.

The revenge against the Clintons would be ironically sweet, too, for those in the Dem anti-Hillary camp. There was bad blood generated between the Clintons and the Gores during that campaign. The Gores saw Hillary using her time supposedly on behalf of Gore’s candidacy instead being channeled to her own eventual campaign chest.

There is a certain satisfaction in seeing the Dems’ reliance on identity politics to generate dissatisfaction coming around to bite them where the sun don’t shine. I guess Saul Alinksy’s textbook didn’t plan for such contingencies.

It’s amusing to watch the Dems cannibalize one another.

It’s good to see a prominent democrat call an african american racist a racist. I’ve heard a number of african americans refuse to acknowledge that there is such a thing as racism against white people. usually the reason given goes something like “the white power structure only allows racism against black people”.

If there is one thing that an Obama candidacy can focus Amerca’s attention to, it is the massive amounts of self pity, victimization, and hatred towards white people that exists within the african american community. It’s not healthy and I think it holds them back.

BryanS on March 21, 2008 at 9:21 AM

I’ve rarely agreed with anything Ferraro said, but She is right on about the Rev.

The Chicago columnist blaming whites for just not getting it excuses what is wrong, blaming anyone but one’s self for hatred, by discrediting what should be right, love of one’s country and fellow humans.

Tolerance vs. PC vs. good citizenship.

When people like the Rev.Wright congregation persist in hating and blaming others for not understanding their God given Constitutional RIGHT to hate America, allowing them to fester is an option as we must tolerate, even as we witness their festering infection leading towards violence upon our own unity and loss of opportunity for ourselves.

HOW MANY GENERATIONS of whites must pay for 87 years of black slavery practiced once upon a time 232 years ago? Blacks blame whites, but the USA is not obligated for European rules set into motion prior to our independence. The USA did not instigate slavery. From 7-4-1776 Declaration of Independence to 1-1-1863 Emancipation Proclamation was only 87 years, one long lifespan during which children were born, yes; none-the-less, only 87 years endured our national practice of slavery. For 145 years, from 1863 to 2008, the blacks have had their freedom and the right to vote (women’s vote did not arrive until 1920, and ERA equal pay for equal work has yet to occur). Since LBJ in 1964, civil rights have studiously been observed for nearly half a century and further layers of protection and benefits have been bestowed upon blacks and minorities by our nation in order to rectify any former guilt and enhance opportunities for minorities to the point that today our nation practices reverse discrimination. Geraldine laid it on the line.

The minorities STILL demanding government and social hand-outs are the people who just don’t get it. ANYONE enforcing reverse discrimination doesn’t get it, either.

Obama represents hope and change that we can believe in WHEN he gets over himself. Evidently, he is not yet there as he blames us for not sharing his take, but we are listening and watching. No more is asked of Obama than of McCain or Hillary. WHO represents the ‘will’ of the majority of Americans and who will best serve our American nation?

That anyone’s candidacy for POTUS enjoys the rights of reverse discrimination is unacceptable.

E pluribus unum functions when we are all equal under the law, POTUS candidates as well.

Fox has been playing the hypocrisy card to trump Obama’s race card, pointing out that his rationale for excusing Rev.
