The Hillary Papers: Long way gone Update: NAFTA lie exposed

The news media have begun digging into the newly-released schedules for Hillary Clinton during her husband’s administration, and they have already found some interesting holes and juxtapositions in her timelines. For instance, the Guardian in Britain notices that Hillary was outside of the country when a few crises arose, calling into question how much impact she had on their management:
On the day that dozens of US cruise missiles rained down on Serbia in an attempt to punish Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic for the country’s onslaught against ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo, first lady Hillary Clinton was far from the White House war room: instead she was touring ancient Egyptian ruins, including King Tut’s tomb and the temple of Hatshepsut. And on the day before the signing of the Good Friday agreement in Belfast she was at an event called “Hats on for Bella” in Washington.
In her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton has touted her experience in the Clinton White House as preparation to lead the nation in a time of crisis. “Ready on day one” has been her slogan.
But an initial reading of some of the more than 11,000 pages of Clinton’s schedules from her days as first lady, released today by the National Archives and the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library, shows that she was often far from the site of decision-making during some of the most pivotal events of Bill Clinton’s presidency.
This won’t really surprise anyone, will it? After all, the duties of a First Lady are significantly different than that of President, but the schedule is just as busy. Hillary has argued that she handled the role differently, and at first she did — with the Health Care Task Force, which turned into a statist disaster. Afterwards, little evidence has arisen that she had any real, tangible impact on foreign policy, national security, or any other role in the White House.
First, the Guardian notes the Bella Abzug event, but that’s not the end of the issue with Northern Ireland’s peace process, which she specifically cites as personal experience. While Bill made calls to the participants in order to keep the process on track, she spent her day meeting with Elie Weisel and attending a farewell party for a Democratic Party official, Karen Finney. While the accord got signed, she met with Amelita Ramos, her counterpart from the Philippines.
During the al-Qaeda crisis of 1998, after the bombings of our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, Bill Clinton had suspected AQ sites hit with missiles on August 20th, from their vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. Bill cut short his vacation to manage the crisis from the White House. Hillary stayed in Martha’s Vineyard until August 30th, hardly demonstrating a hands-on approach to national security.
So what again did Hillary actually do to claim that she could take over on Day One? She relaxed at Martha’s Vineyard and toured the Egyptian pyramids. It sounds more like Agatha Christie movies than preparation for the Presidency.
Update: ABC looks at the same data, and says the trips abroad are nothing more than standard First Lady fare:
The release of 17,000 pages of then-first lady Hillary Clinton’s daily schedule in the White House has raised questions about her ability to answer the 3 a.m. phone call she talks about in her commercials.
“Maybe because I have had the great honor and privilege of seeing that really hard job up close that I know that there is a big difference between speeches and solutions and talk and action,” Sen. Clinton said in her commercials before the Texas and Ohio primaries.
But the daily schedules released today show many of her overseas trips to be the standard first lady tourist fare, hospital visits and blinis with caviar.
ABC also notes that some of the critical days of the Clinton administration have data missing. For instance, on December 7, 2000, her brothers came to the White House to wangle pardons for Marc Rich and some drug dealers, efforts which proved successful the next month. However, her schedule doesn’t note the names of the people with whom she met.
The Clinton experience lives, even if Hillary can’t claim it as presidential preparation.
Update II: ABC has done some excellent work already on these documents. They have uncovered an event that exposes Hillary as a liar on NAFTA. She has told people she opposed it and tried to talk Bill out of pursuing it, but in November 1993 she had hit the trail to generate support for the trade pact:
One interesting event in Sen. Hillary Clinton’s just-released schedules from the 1990s comes on Nov. 10 1993, when the former first lady was to serve as the closing act during a briefing on NAFTA, the trade agreement she now assails. …
Two attendees of that closed-door briefing, neither of whom are affiliated with any campaign, describe that event for ABC News. It was a room full of women involved in international trade. David Gergen served as a sort of master of ceremonies as various women members of the Cabinet talked up NAFTA, which had yet to pass Congress.
“It wasn’t a drop-by it was organized around her participation,” said one attendee. “Her remarks were totally pro-NAFTA and what a good thing it would be for the economy. There was no equivocation for her support for NAFTA at the time. Folks were pleased that she came by. If this is a still a question about what Hillary’s position when she was First Lady, she was totally supportive if [sic] NAFTA.
Small wonder the Clintons wanted to keep the records buried.

To tour the Pyramids in Egypt and attend “Hats on for Bella.”
That settles it for me, she`s TOTALLY qualified to be First Lady!

Hillary’s only experience about 3am in the White House is when she was woken by Slick Willie stumbling around trying to shower off some intern’s perfume.
When will the official last post on Hillary be?

I would note that her schedule does not list throwing Gwen Stacy from the Brooklyn Bridge, hiding her six Horcrux, and her monthly black mass.

Hillary will claim there were important national security reasons for inspecting King Tut’s tomb. Sinbad and Sheryl Crow will back her up on this.

Touche’.
Kudos to ABC. Great job with this and with Obama’s crazy uncle problem.
I wonder if they made a conscious decision to move to the Right since NBC moved so far to the Left?

NAFTA? I want WAFTA!
Oh, what hath the democrat party wrought upon themselves?

Nah- with the Republican nominee already decided the fight between Clinton and Obama is where the
blood is being spilledbig news is. Sometimes the need for ratings does overcome institutional bias to some degree. That and even the lefties in MSM newsrooms have to be at least a little embarrassed when watching the likes of Chrissy Matthews give Obama his daily toungebath.

To me the most striking and alarming thing about the Democrat party is that the most qualified candidates (Biden and Richardson) were tossed aside with little thought or consideration. Now the party is left with these two.
A community organizer and a globe trotter.
Josh at TPM actually has a post today stating that McCain is unfit to be president. That level of intellectual dishonesty or disingenuousness should have made his head explode.

abc has easily become the least in the tank for the dems of the major networks in recent years.

But…but….but……
Clinton operatives were all over the media yesterday claiming that there wasn’t anything surprising coming out of these papers and it would be a non-event (my first inkling that it probably wasn’t true). They specifically said that there would be nothing about the fundraising scandals or any of the more titilating scandals of an administration that was nothing but an eight-year long scandal (meaning, IMO, there was stuff to be found but the hype of what “wasn’t” included would disappoint and blunt the fact that Hillary Clinton was helping with Kosovo from Egypt and other relevant contradictions). I can only what lays in wait for historians in the thousands of documents the Clintons refuse to release from this period.
All of which leads to this thought:
Wonder if Hillary still wants that re-do primary vote in Michigan where the auto unions and wolverine Democrats blame NAFTA for all the ills in the world from global warming to split ends.

I’d suggest that it is debatable that Biden and Richardson are the “most qualified” of the also rans but I do agree with your point that Richardson, Biden, and Dodd weren’t even seriously considered. The really qualified potential candidates were, apparently, too smart to get in the middle of food fight involving the Clintons.
highhopes on March 19, 2008 at 7:26 PM
Of course, she’d probably prefer they made it into the shredder…I wonder how much she’s really sweating about these papers tho, I mean she knew they would have to be released at some point, hopefully after the election.

When you see her legs sticking out from beneath the house that’s fallen on her.

I take this Nafta lie as one of the reasons hillary is almost tolerable as a democrat. She’s more centrist than her campaign suggests. Besides her idiotic belief in a statist solution to the medical system, which is routinely defeated around the country, she’s a pragmatist. What people think of her is of utmost importance – same reason Bill passed the balanced budget, welfare reform etc. It made sense.

Eh, who cares.
She drew fire from to protect a national resource- Sinbad.
She’s got my vote- the world needs humor.

Just more ammo from the Republican Attack Machine. She should know better than to run on a record she doesn’t have. At least Obama doesn’t claim to have any record whatsoever, so its hard to attack it, since there isn’t one.
Neo on March 19, 2008 at 8:56 PM
I can’t wait for the tax records and all the other stuff this most “transparent and vetted” candidate hasn’t released yet. Aside from the fact that we don’t have the perfect nominee of my choice, the past few weeks have made me sooooooo happy to be a Republican. I hope someone puts out the Dem 2008 campaign on dvd when this is over so I can relive the highlights over and over and over!!!

Do the schedules show when Hillary stood next to Vince Foster on the day he died handing him cookies and juice as he donated six pints of blood to the Red Cross? Just asking…
Casper the Friendly Host on March 19, 2008 at 9:50 PM
Nice attempt at re-writing history lorien. The 94 House of Representatives wrote and passed the balanced budget amendment when Bill submitted a budget two months earlier that had a 250 billion dollar deficit. The bill passed so overwelmingly in the house and had so much public support the Senate had no choice but to pass it along for Willy to sign. Pass the fairy tales and kool-aid to your uninformed friends.

I’ve always taken her “Ready on day one” to mean she’ll revamp the travel office and she does have that experience under her belt.

I’m still holding out hope for the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” ticket.

As First Lady, Hillary was supposed to back up Bill publicly on all policy issues, including NAFTA. If she disagreed, she would have done so privately, not publicly. Her schedule gives no evidence that she is lying in this case.
Her claims of leadership on diplomacy in Northern Ireland and the Middle East are clearly phony, and she tried to re-write history on the S-CHIP program as well. That’s enough for me to believe nothing that she says. But in this case, there is no evidence for a contradiction…yet.
free-thinker on March 19, 2008 at 11:05 PM
It is indeed remarkable that while Republicans have had a whole set of viable candidates better than Bush, the current Democratic nominees are shadows of Kerry in terms of actually being equipped to be President. And Kerry had lost.
freevillage on March 19, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Apparently, Bill was even smarter than I thought.
Not quite right. Actual slogan is “Red-y from day one.”

Does anyone really want to entrust someone with THE BOMB who can’t even keep track of her own husband…in her own house?
And who would the Hill appoint to the Joint Chiefs of Staff? Her only recorded conversations with the military are strings of swear words directed at them. I seem to remember that the last one of Bill’s picks could barely speak English: would she appoint an illegal alien??
