Among other things, it was the mixed metaphors of ships passing in the night and opening Pandora's box that had me scratching my head.

I don't think whites hate blacks the way blacks hate whites. White racists generally would prefer not to have to deal with blacks and just want them to be gone wherever it is they go.

Blacks have a real grudge against abuse by whites.

Most Americans pull for the underdog and like to see it when blacks succede. But, most Americans believe that many poor blacks are'nt going too move up because they have been trained for so long to be helpless. Katrina was a classic example of the results of the democratic vote farming welfare state. Keep the poor blacks in the refrigerator until an election, then send them back into the fridge.

Sad but true.

I had no more than pushed the send button when I read on FOX that Obama had indeed gained a new recruit . . . the “New Black Panter” party. Who’s next, the Weathermen?

rplat on March 19, 2008 at 3:58 PM

He gained my man Huckabee, who defended Obama with Joe Scarborough. He grew up in a segregated South and gets it.

I supported Rev Huckabee from Day One, he is a real Christian, forgiving, loving and man of The Golden Rule.

And he got trashed here like a liberal whore.

I wish he was our candidate, I really do. And I am so sorry I was so easily led against him, that was a mistake on my part.

There is not a race of people in the world who has not been enslaved at some time. As long as some blacks enjoy thinking of themselves as victims, then they will be victims--of somebody. As far as Obama is concerned, I will never vote for a socialist/marxist.

Obama changed nothing. His dedicated cult is still with him but he gained no new recruits. His purpose was to cover his butt and he probably did that. The yellow stain left by his pastor and personal confident is as visible as ever.

I don’t think that his objective was to change minds. His main objective was to keep his current supporters from drifting to another candidate.

I'd agree to some extent. Obviously, any speech given during a campaign is going to have this aim. That being said, it was still a pretty risky speech. I think there was some genuine conviction in there.

I agree. I think his speech was designed to give his base cover in dealing with questions about Wright and black racism. It probably didn't change any minds, but some who were clueless/undecided are going to start asking some questions. Now Obama's base can counter charge "old news and racism".
But Wright's videos are too damning.

I don't think that his objective was to change minds. His main objective was to keep his current supporters from drifting to another candidate. On this point, I think that his speech prevented a political hemorrhage that could have convinced uncommitted super delegates to bolt into Clinton's corner. In the absence of something more damaging coming forth in the next few months, the speech was probably good enough to secure him the nomination.

I disagree. If you spent your life watching natives in Tarzan movies, or documentaries on famine in Sub Saharan Africa, videos from the Liberian war, or progress in Zimbabwe after Rhodesia was taken over, or Haiti political footage, what else can you do to come to grips with your African Heritage? The defenses of the human brain cause you to have to blame something or someone for these disasters.

I commend Obama for opening the discussion on race and what the “Black Experience” means. Many Blacks seem to blame whites, but deep down there is a degree of embarrassment that runs deeper than slavery: although slavery represents the culmination of the shame.

Millions of American Blacks have shown that they are just as smart and just as capable as whites. However, our history has slowed the evolution of millions of other blacks. Today, you can listen to a black person speak that grew up just down the road from you, and you can’t hardly understand what they are saying. It is a testament to the virtual segregation that existents today. Like 2 ships passing in the night.

The solution to this reality is very complicated and will take some open, frank discussion between the races to straighten out. Give Obama credit where credit is due for opening this Pandora’s box.
