Bin Laden issues new message … that doesn’t mention fifth anniversary of Iraq invasion? Update: Audio added

posted at 7:15 pm on March 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

Rusty has it. Five minutes of audio devoted to the Mohammed cartoons and the papist Crusade, a subject he already droned on about two years ago. There’s some ambiguity from the news reports as to whether he refers specifically to the republication of the cartoons this year or to their publication generally, which could come from an older tape. Too bad; if he’s going to revisit old jihadist grievances, I’d sure like to hear more of his take on global warming.

Note that the tape is directed not at the U.S. but at the EU and conspicuously doesn’t mention Geert Wilders’s film, which is of a piece with the cartoons and has been in the news for at least a month. Any theories as to why he’d release a tape on the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war that not only doesn’t mention Iraq but isn’t even geared at the Great Satan? Any possible explanation — perhaps in light of some of his other recent tapes — why he might not be in the mood to chatter about Iraq’s imminent transformation into a Wahhabist paradise? Let me know in the comments if you figure it out.

Be sure to read through Rusty’s updates, too, noting how unorthodox today’s announcement was on AQ’s propaganda organs. Any explanations for that?

Update: Here’s the video. Sounds like he’s phoning it in, literally. The tape does, superficially, appear to be recent, though, as there’s a reference early on to Bush preparing to leave office.

Update: Incidentally, what’s the Ron Paul read on all of this? He’s threatening attacks over cartoons, which doesn’t quite jibe with the “they’re over here because we’re over there” blowback theory the isolationists favor. Adam Gadahn already destroyed that argument last year but now here’s Osama destroying it again. What’s the solution, Ron? Letters of marque, right?

How soon you Democrat wannabes forget that Iraq and Afghanistan have nothing to do with each other. Bin Laden wouldn’t have a opinion on the invasion anniversary.

Just a freaky coincidence. AQ and Iraq are not connected, dontcha know.

As for why it’s aimed at the EU, perhaps it has something to do with men like Sarkozy who have not followed the Hate Bush rules in the old playbook?

As we know, before 9/11 Bin Laden used to regularly release audio tapes to his followers urging them to join his cause. Reportedly, they were quite powerful messages reciting the great glories of the Islamic caliphate and past. He’d send them out for copying and distribution to the mosques et cetera.

Powerful stuff.

So, why all of a sudden the silence from Bin Laden all these years? Since Tora Bora. Why has he stopped making these tapes?

I’m stumped. He’s got to be dead and these are fake. But the experts say they’re real and recent.

Bush preparing to leave office is not hard to predict. It’s his second term and second term presidents tend to leave office at the end of their second term. I think the lack of the other events you already mentioned is more suspicious, and corroborates my theory that he’s dead and the jihadis are hiding it becase:
1. Dying of kideny problems isn’t “martyrdom”

2. “Where’s Osama” is a line their allies on the left over here would like to keep using.

Okay, he mentions “Blair” towards the end, not Gordon Brown. Blair left office 6 months ago. So, that may give us a clue as to how dated it is.

I counted him mentioning the cartoons 6 times. The liberal media, and the anti-War wing of the libertarian movement and the “Ron Paul Revolutionaries” have been telling us that it’s not our culture the Islamo-Fascists hate, but rather “our foreign policy.” What’s that numbing mantra from Paul: “If we just pulled out troops out of Iraq, Saudi Arabia and other Muslim lands, they’d leave us alone.”

Funny OBL said nothing of this, in the tape, just talked about Western culture and freedom of expression.

Maybe the fact that it sounds out-of-date actually argues in a strange way that it at least is his voice–if AQ were faking the tapes altogether, you’d think they’d at least make the contents topical.

I still think the reason we all have to sit around and pretend he’s alive is the botched and forgotten attempt by most of the CIA to sway public opinion against Bush way back when. Maybe that’s just my inner Ronulan talking, but the one thing we’ve seen from American intelligence and law agencies since 9/11 is that they you need overwhelming evidence to even raise the possibility of a change in the status quo.

The idea of experts “confirming” the “authenticity” of “audio samples” in the 21st Century is even stupider than the idea of a diabetic surviving for 6.5 years in a cave with history’s most advanced military looking for him and a $25 million price on his head. He’s a shade on a wall.

I can assure you that the tape is old.

And I mean, at least 12 to 6 months old.

Take my word for it.

What happened to Bin Laden?

I don’t know.

All I know is that there is a message sent to his followers to respond to the danish cartoons (if you noticed, there was no physical response so far), Britain will get its share, and Saudi Arabia.

I already see replies to Bin Ladin’s old message, some of them are like this one:

Kill the Jews and their supporters kill the Infidels, ambush them in their homes, their fields, their streets, take the night as a cover and turn their day into hell. May your slogan and your battle cry be ‘Allah Akbar’ (Allah is the greatest), the religion of Allah is the winner.

Seven Percent Solution on March 20, 2008 at 12:28 AM

Osama is a convenient focus for all sides here. The minimal and sketchy communications coming from Osama tend to make me think he is dead. But for western leaders it is more comfortable to blame an individual for hijacking a noble faith rather than blame the vicious dogma of a supremacist cult. For the Muslims he is a rally point and a foil for the real engine driving the conflict.

BL@KBIRD on March 20, 2008 at 1:14 AM

I don’t believe Osama’s been “Laddin” for quite some time…I think he’s rotting in a musty cave near Afghanistan and occasionally serving as a chew toy for passing wolves.

Are these “messages” still coming on audio cassettes? What will they do when there are no more audio cassette players available?

landlines on March 20, 2008 at 1:37 AM

…and by the way…

Does anyone believe that our military would really release their actual analysis of a purported Bin Ladin message to the general public? A competent military with a functioning propaganda unit would release exactly what they want the enemy to think we believe….nothing more, nothing less.

Limerick on March 20, 2008 at 1:58 AM

It might or might not be bin Laden on the tapes. He might or might not be dead. But …

The message is … attack anyone for anything in the West. A cartoon. A book. A play. A song. A movie. Something the Pope said. It doesn’t matter.

Blows Obama’s “negotiate” message out of the water, along with his “Muslim Summit.”

What, so we can all convert to Wahabbist Islam? That’s the only thing that will satisfy AQ. Regardless if Osama is dead or not. That’s the message.

Guarantee that Europe WILL see massive terror over a set of fricking CARTOONS. Muslims demand to tell us in the West how we can live our lives. It’s about time we pushed back on that. Emphatically. So no one doubts the message.

And we’re not alone. I believe the PRC on the threats to the Olympics. And their battle with Uighur Muslim terrorism and separatism. There are no boundaries to AQ and Jihad’s demands. None at all.

whiskey_199 on March 20, 2008 at 2:01 AM

What’s the solution, Ron? Letters of marque, right?

C’mon. I know there’s enough libertarian in you to know that bounty-hunting is better handled by the private sector than by the military. $1 billion dollars on Osama’s head would produce results, and would be damn cheap.

Mark Jaquith on March 20, 2008 at 2:22 AM

Hey Mark, I’m all for a Letter of Marque option for supporting our military but bounty hunters is a crazy idea from the far fringe of Libertarianism. Don’t let Dwane”Dog” Chapman fool you, bail recovery is not a business full of people with the skills or willpower to grab nationals from other countries.

To get competant private sector forces like Blackwater involved we’d have to offer so much money that it’d be cheaper to send in our own. Of course that’s just a man who dreams of having a letter of marque and reprisal on his person every day.

The Dem Politicians are keeping him ‘alive’ so they can bash Bush with “You never got Bin Laden.” and a gullible public will believe them.

All the Intel agencies in the world are keeping him ‘alive’ to keep their budgets flowing ever larger. (Plus in the CIA, the additional reason that the Dem pols: to make Bush look bad.

Our military “chairborne brass ” are keeping him ‘alive’ for budgetary and manpower allocation purposes.

The media is keeping him ‘alive’ for the Bush bashing aspect, as well as for viewership / circulation ratings by ocasionally trotting out the biggest boogey man they can get to scare people.

The Islamofascists are keeping him ‘alive’ to ‘tweak the nose of the great satan’ and to avoid depressing their own people, future recruits and even run of the mill non bomb wearing muslims; If Osama were admitted to be dead, it would show their weakness and show that Allah can’t protect even one major figure. We’ve seen little video from him, and that has been obviously spliced stuff, and the audio can be anyone, just listen to any FM Morning Show DJs doing their skits.

Even if one thinks he’s alive, look at even the Muslim world’s view of him. If we didn’t kill him, we’ve actually done worse: Marginalized him, and made him irrelevant.

Bin Laden released a video every month after 9/11 until Dec 2001 when we did massive bombings of Tora Bora where he was held up.
