I must have seen a different speech.
SIJ6141 on March 18, 2008 at 7:42 PM
Did anyone else fine this speech tiresome, tedious, full of lofty yet empty rhetoric, BORING, and forced?
Why couldn’t he have given it, say, at the beginning of the campaign?
Why did his racist, hate-filled preacher have to be the catalyst for such racial “healing?”
What a fraud.
Good Lt on March 18, 2008 at 7:46 PM
Wow…is he serious? I thought it was pretty lame; certainly didn’t really cover what he believed. A lot of doublespeak and worthless poli-speak. Is this Matthews fellow really all there? Since Abraham Lincoln? Better than Martin Luther King? Wow…
StaticElectricityMan on March 18, 2008 at 7:47 PM
Sorry Chris Matthews. Barrack Obama is married.
SoulGlo on March 18, 2008 at 7:47 PM
Good God…more journalistic fellatio from Matthews.
Yeah, I’d say he’s got that thrill up his leg thing going again.
flipflop on March 18, 2008 at 7:48 PM
Obama was there to answer questions about Wright. He compared rejecting Wright to rejecting the entire black community and his Grandma.
Read this account of granny getting badgered by a panhandler.

A speech worthy of Lincoln?

Moon-touched party hack gets spiritually titillated by silver-tongued demagogue. Big surprise.
spmat on March 18, 2008 at 7:49 PM
Chris Mathews talks like that when no black people are around?
WTF?
Chakra Hammer on March 18, 2008 at 7:51 PM
I had to lean back from my computer screen because of all the spit landing on my face.
I’ve not seen such man-love since Hewitt. I hope Iowahawk does an article on this speech! (Although it would be hard to top AP’s performance today)
jaime on March 18, 2008 at 7:51 PM
For Chris,he probably got a surge!
canopfor on March 18, 2008 at 7:52 PM
Seriously, only after watching this clip did I suddenly have the feeling to take a dump.
Gotta go!

Chakra Hammer on March 18, 2008 at 7:53 PM
How is Matthews able to speak with his lips pressed so firmly to Obama’s backside?
Midas on March 18, 2008 at 7:54 PM
Yeah, that’s pretty deep.

Maybe it’s just me, but the video appears to have been taken down already.
Esthier on March 18, 2008 at 7:56 PM
I don’t know about the Twain and Fitzgerald comparisons, but I thought it was a good speech.
Yoosaion on March 18, 2008 at 7:57 PM
I hope they mopped up the floor after Chris was done, we don’t want people slipping on the drewl.
Ok, it was the kind of speech he had to give. He was playing to his packed liberal audience. He is working to get the nomination then in the general election he will have to revisit this beaus emost independents and republicans were not wowed like Mr. Mathews.
Now all the liberal media can forgive him and blame us mean racists white people for ever doubting him. This gives them all the reason they need to go back to fawning.

lorien1973 on March 18, 2008 at 7:59 PM
Ditto. Had to read the transcript over @ Newsbusters.
Worthy of Abraham Lincoln? Give me an ever-lovin’ break! Matthews is definitely in the can for Obama.
Surpassing Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech?
Unbelievable.
Corky on March 18, 2008 at 7:59 PM
I doubt Abraham Lincoln ever threw his grandmother under the bus…
Corky on March 18, 2008 at 8:00 PM
Of course the phrase wouldn’t have made as much sense back then, but you’re likely right. I’d love to hear his grandmother interviewed.

Video fixed. This is the last time I bother trying to post to YouTube. The site is utterly, totally FUBAR.
Allahpundit on March 18, 2008 at 8:05 PM
It’s hard for me to believe Matthews is straight. This isn’t the first time he had an on air orgasm over a man.
Blake on March 18, 2008 at 8:06 PM
I would like to see Clinton win the nomination just to see the payback she would deliver to all those who jumped her ship.
Blake on March 18, 2008 at 8:08 PM
“This speech should be read as often as we read Tom Sawyer.”
The pandermeter is broken.
snaggletoothie on March 18, 2008 at 8:10 PM
Good grief. Matthews must have stopped taking saltpeter.
MrScribbler on March 18, 2008 at 8:11 PM
great speach, in the sense that it totally avoided the 8000 pound donkey in the room named “when i realized my preacher was a bigoted loon with illusins of grandure with ties to racists and international terrorist supports, why didn’t i find a different church?”
DrW on March 18, 2008 at 8:11 PM
Can we get an official retraction of “Let’s play Hardball?”
There’s no ball(s) and he isn’t playing; I guess we should let him keep the “hard.”

tblot on March 18, 2008 at 8:14 PM
If Obama is now Lincoln does that make Rev. Wright the new Calhoun?
THE CHOSEN ONE on March 18, 2008 at 8:15 PM
Wonder how long Chrissie had to wait behind the desk before he could stand up…
Big Daddy Cool on March 18, 2008 at 8:16 PM
“It’s white people talking the way they do when there are no black people around…”
And this is Chris Matthews talking when there are no men around. I’d feel bad for Matthews if he actually had viewers.
P.S. I read both Huckleberry Finn, and Great Gatsby, and Obama’s not fit to write the dust-jacket summary of either.
emailnuevo on March 18, 2008 at 8:17 PM
How does this dope get away with quoting scripture all the time? Any time a Republican references anything about the concept of God, they are imediately branded as a religious nut?
Also to Chris, unlike you or Osama-bama, I would never subject my children to this type of indoctrinational propoganda.
Alden Pyle on March 18, 2008 at 8:18 PM
Mathews says it’s one of the greatest speeches in American History. Didn’t he say that about his Iowa, Super Duper Tuesday, and the DNC convention of 04′?
THE CHOSEN ONE on March 18, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Rachel Maddow just made a point on Olby’s show that I did not realize. TVRWC will not be satisfied until Wright is arrested? That is the first I have heared of that. Damn Right Wingers. I need to lie down from all the spinning. Oh yeah, Matthews still has his tingle.

Obama = Lincoln.
Thanks, Chris, for ripping off the scab from all that is stupid in this world.
James OK on March 18, 2008 at 8:32 PM
I always wondered what it would be like to watch self flagellation.
Now I get to watch an inexperienced presidential nominee kill himself with hubris, and the MSM lap up the blood with a lustful dreamy dementia that knows no bounds.
I can’t believe this is 2008. I used to wish that I could live for a thousand years, now I understand the old saying, “the more things “CHANGE”, the more they stay the same.

Prolly coverin for the fact that he and his fellow Obamedia press did a p*sspoor job handling this canidate of closet hate.

I don’t know who’s the bigger joke, “Softballs” Matthews or Olbermaniac.
JayVee on March 18, 2008 at 8:35 PM
I watched Obama’s speech. It was too long, and it limped to a weak conclusion. To compare Obama to Lincoln is just plain silly. Lincoln was a brilliant speechwriter. Obama is not in his league. Not even close to it.
AZCoyote on March 18, 2008 at 8:36 PM
Oh my gosh!! You have GOT to be kidding. The mind is a terrible thing to waste, isn’t it?
I read that speech, totally not impressesd and NOTHING Obama could say would change my mind about him.
Using Geraldine Ferrara as an example to compare to his pastor, are you serious? Speaking about slavery on and on.
Best speech since Lincoln??? What?
Why aren’t the jewish people crying and going on about the Holocost, some people even claim it never happened but there’s no whining. I knew liberals would think this speech was good.
It is like we are from 2 different planets. There is no speaking to someone who can defend Obama, period.
Conservatives R Us on March 18, 2008 at 8:36 PM
Fixed!
Corky on March 18, 2008 at 8:37 PM
Speech might have had more of an impact if everyone didn’t know it was to save his own ass.
Chuck Schick on March 18, 2008 at 8:38 PM
Yes, Matthews, you’re right. Obama’s speech, given for the sole purpose of covering his ass, deserves to be eshrined, right along side of “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
ynot4tony2 on March 18, 2008 at 8:41 PM
Chrissy’s definitely voting with his schwanz.
soundingboard on March 18, 2008 at 8:43 PM
Obama’s speech was decent for a platitudinous ass-covering, but his lofty rhetoric still managed to invoke class warfare.
If Barack Obama were an honest man some of his points would be better taken.
Barack Obama is not an honest man.
BKennedy on March 18, 2008 at 8:44 PM
Chrissy’s got plenty of company. The slobbering all around the MSM is going to be sickening. Take a look at Huffpo’s front page.
Bugler on March 18, 2008 at 8:48 PM
Better than “I Have a Dream”? WTF?
Maybe Chris is a closet racist, but my friends and I don’t spew racial garbage no matter who we’re in a room with.
BadgerHawk on March 18, 2008 at 8:49 PM
I think that if we compare Obama’s speech to every speech ever given throughout the entire scope of time and space, from now to infinity, it is clear that Obama’s is better.
tlynch001 on March 18, 2008 at 8:59 PM
I think he’d have to fight Andrew Sullivan and Todd Gitlin for him anyway.
I’m just hoping Newsbusters keeps that Eyeblast.tv ad (the one with the ROFLMAO headline and the changing photos of people doubled over laughing) up beside the Matthews transcript.
Quisp on March 18, 2008 at 9:00 PM
Thanks for that video. I just can’t get enough of that tool…
AUINSC on March 18, 2008 at 9:05 PM
Hey Mathews, don’t forget which party that “genius” Lincoln was from.
P.S. I wonder if SNL will do a parody of Rev. Wright?
THE CHOSEN ONE on March 18, 2008 at 9:08 PM
How does this guy stay on the air. His rating are in the tank and have never been out. I don’t get it. MSNBC must be desparate for talking heads.
thatcher on March 18, 2008 at 9:11 PM
How does Kathleen put up with this guy? He is such a tool.
Dubn8tr on March 18, 2008 at 9:12 PM
I don’t know what kind of speech Matthews has when he’s only with other white people, but when I’m with only white people our conversation is a thousand miles away from how a racist like Rev. Wright speaks when he’s, as it were, preaching to the choir.
Tzetzes on March 18, 2008 at 9:17 PM
LOL. Hey, its just chris being chris. What an idiot.
devere252 on March 18, 2008 at 9:22 PM
It’s pitiful that someone who is so profoundly smitten by what was so obviously empty rhetoric is still considered (by some) to be a serious journalist.
29Victor on March 18, 2008 at 9:23 PM
This above all: to thine own self be true.
They want him to be real and to win so badly they are willing to lie to themselves.

That’s why he couldn’t “vidi or vici.”

I wish Zell Miller was around to slap Chrissie silly.
drjohn on March 18, 2008 at 9:29 PM
How dare he say that this speech “went beyond ‘I have a dream.’ ” Dr. King is spinning in his grave. Dr. King battled for real change in a time when real racism was burning through America. Forty years later an agent of “hope” and “change” is proving that he is a slimy politician saying what he can to get elected.
Shame on you, Senator.
cannonball on March 18, 2008 at 9:32 PM
Meant to say Hardball, not Senator.
cannonball on March 18, 2008 at 9:33 PM
Boilerplate tapdancing by Barack, and nothing inspired in the least.
Matthews must need a new hearing aid.
Or a red-silk heart-shaped pillow with the name Obama stitched on it.

What a slobbering dickeater.
Jaibones on March 18, 2008 at 9:38 PM
Doesn’t anyone know an Islaomfascist Terrorist Group that makes “orange jumpsuit” internet videos that we can arrange to have access to Matthews?
grtflmark on March 18, 2008 at 9:51 PM
Mathews is a dolt - the only four-letter word I can think of that I can use here.
MLK is rolling over in his grave at how BHO and his “pastor” have set race relations back a decade or three. Or to continue Chrissy’s analogy, four score and seven???
BHO voted with his feet, every Sunday, for two decades, to surround himself with a chanting, enthusiastic crowd worshipping at the feet of an evil-minded charlatan.
He didn’t get to choose his grandma, a private person, who admitted fear, not hate, of black persons.
To compare an outspoken public hate-monger (whom he CHOSE and embraces to this day) to a member of his family is idiotic, disingenuous, and devious - but the MSM will lap it up, as Chrissy has.
fred5678 on March 18, 2008 at 10:01 PM
The zenith of sycophantic adulation, lets play hardball…
Wow. How in the tank are they? How detached from reality are they? The latest polls on the media reveal that most Americans just don’t trust them, so they throw themselves at Barack Obama this shamelessly? This more or less seals Obama fate.

Well, I thought the worst part of the speech was when he mentioned that little dog Checkers because..
… Oh, wait. I’ve got Obama’s speech confused with one made by a different politician who was trying to save his political career.
radjah shelduck on March 18, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Is Matthews an idiot? Yes. Does he deserve beheading? No. You sound like a DKos liberal crying out for blood.

I can’t listen…even if i had an ounce of respect for Matthews, i can’t stand the spitty way he talks…imagine sitting across that little table from him when he’s in the throes of one of his assinine rants.

MsUnderestimated on March 18, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Maybe Mathews is seriously craving some Obamameat to quell that tingling up the back of his leg and creeping up to his nether region.
gzelmiami on March 18, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Great Speech? Matthews are you on drugs? Hell, are you even on this planet? At least Spitzer’s ‘girlfriend’ knew she was a whore and in it for the money. What’s your excuse Matthews?

Saw the first ten seconds of this on the way to my car tonight.
My split second reaction?
Chris and Monica Lewinsky shoulkd compare stains.
thirtypundit on March 18, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Mathews should enjoy his show while he can. My peeps tell me that he and Olby are only there through November. Then GE the parent company will gut the whole network. Same with the NYT’s. As soon as the partisan politics are inevitable, time to get back to that thing called turning an actual profit.

D2Boston on March 19, 2008 at 12:11 AM
What a lap dog. I’m guessing he used a lot of mouthwash afterwards to get the taste out of his mouth.
Get ready for the the “African-American religious experience” from the networks to help explain this all away….make it understandable to the common folk. What we’ll discover, is that what we thought we heard was not what was meant. By paying attention to what was said misses the bigger point and the real meaning of the message.
Translation: being offended is a symptom of racial prejudice)
Lord help us once they start polling churches to demonstrate that this sort of angst is commonplace

The MSN and people like this man make me sick. I don’t even listen to their stupid words. If tomorrow some Dem actually did anoint themselves dictator for life, if tomorrow martial law was declared and people rounded up in the streets,, Chris Matthews and all the rest of these talking heads would be right there praising the Dems for finally bringing neighbors together and getting them off their couches!
