Open thread: Obama speech aims to save America, his own ass; Update: Transcript added; Update: Sullivan swoons

posted at 10:08 am on March 18, 2008 by Allahpundit

10:15 ET on all the cable nets and livestreaming on their websites so you have no excuse. If you thought Hewitt’s praise of Romney’s religion speech was embarrassingly effusive, wait until this love bomb detonates over Nutrootsville. I’d ask you who you think is apt to embarrass himself with the most squeamishly lyrical praise — the competition is stiff, after all — but we all know who it’ll be so let’s just wait for him to deliver. He’s already gone to the trouble of declaring preemptively that if the speech fails it proves that a Black Man Can’t Be President in America. Or at least, not one who looks the other way at hate for 20 years because it’s politically convenient for him to do so.

As noted yesterday, it appears the chosen one will be relying on the cherry-picking defense, which didn’t help Hagee with Andrew Sullivan (nor should it have) but should prove plenty persuasive for a reality-based community caught between Hillary and a wounded, discredited Obama as their nominee. Ed and I are going to try to liveblog this thing; stay tuned for video.

Update: If it gets boring, watch this instead.

Update: Drudge has the transcript.

Update: No matter how prepared for it you think you are, you aren’t. Excitable Andy never disappoints. Good lord.

I’m not going to waste my time listening to yet another loser politician trying to spit-shine excrement. I hope his career crashes and burns in this election.

Anyone lavishing praise for a divisive “preacher” such as Rev. Wright isn’t worth hearing.

Never underestimate the power of wishful thinking. Every dictator has been elevated by appealing to the hopes and fears of the populace. Details on specific policies aren’t even necessary. Obama is a genius. And like the best salesmen, he knows how to reach your inner desires to make you want what he has to sell.

NNtrancer on March 18, 2008 at 12:34 PM

Well, well, well. According to this CBS article, which mentioned the grandmother he threw under the bus today, his Hawaiian classmates don’t remember things quite the way he did.

Obama’s “Aloha” Days In The Spotlight

Some excerpts -

Most classmates and teachers recall an easygoing, slightly chunky young man, with the same infectious smile he sports today. Yet many say they have trouble reconciling their nearly 30-year-old memories with Obama’s more recent descriptions of himself as a brooding and sometimes angry adolescent, grappling with his mixed race and the void left by a father who gave him his black skin but little else.

But it [delving into his past] has revealed the vagaries of memory, as well as the ambivalent emotions stirred among old acquaintances when someone they once knew becomes famous.

Dan Hale, the 6-foot-7-inch star center of the 1979 Punahou basketball team, said Obama’s depiction of Hawaii as a place where race really mattered hardly resonates with him.

“I was certainly oblivious to a lot of what he references,” Hale said in an interview. “If you look at our teams, that year I was the only white guy on the starting five. You had three part-Hawaiians, one Filipino and me.”

And

Others are more skeptical that the boy known as Barry felt the angst described by Barack. Furushima said that many of her classmates have expressed dismay at Obama’s rendering of the past.

“We are just such a mixed-up bag of races. It was hard to imagine that he felt that way, because he just seemed happy all the time, smiling all the time,” she said. “We have so many tones of brown here. If someone is brown, they can be Samoan or Fijian or Tongan. I can’t tell if someone is Fijian or black.”

Yep, it appears that Barry’s bio is the stuff of revisionist history. No wonder he feels so at home in a church which fictionalizes Christianity and American history.

I will say this – I think this speech will put the Hillary campaign into a quagmire, which is excellent.

She will not be able to pull anymore of her racist crap. And there has not been a peep from Shillaryland, becuase they are confused, they don’t know what to do.

Again, he isn’t the problem, she is. And I have said before, he is a merely a distraction, she’s the ball, and we keep taking our eyes off of her, why, I don’t know.

I can’t buy into your analysis. Hillary’s camp doesn’t have to do or say anything, BO is taking care of that himself. The reason you don’t hear anything from the Clinton camp is beacuse they’re laying low, working at backdoors and cackling their heads off.

Both of these socialists are a danger to our country. If either one gets elected it’ll be a disaster. Their ideals are pretty much the same. In either case it’s going to cause a bigger racial divide in this country than has existed (in the open) since the 60′s.

Oldnuke on March 18, 2008 at 1:00 PM

But it was astonishing to hear him remark about the racial remarks his white grandmother made and his reaction to it. That bit of personal history and his willingness to reveal it at the expense of his grandmother, more than anything, illuminated who Barrack really is.

NNtrancer on March 18, 2008 at 12:16 PM

A backstabbing bastard?

If we can even believe his claims to be true. We know for a fact that his black Kenyan grandfather was a racist:

Both Dunhams were upset when their daughter Ann married Barack Obama Senior, partcularly after receiving a long, angry letter from the graduate student’s father in Kenya who “didn’t want the Obama blood sullied by a white woman.” [5].

Heck, maybe he chose Rev Wright as his mentor and pastor because he reminded him of his paternal grandfather?

I’m working on taking the text of Obama’s speech and changing it from a speech to a dialog…my comments embedded in the full text of his speech. Since it will be long, I’ll post it on my own blog later this evening and just put a link to it here.

For now, I’ll just say this…

I believe in the dream of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
That dream includes this:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

That speech was delivered on August 28, 1963, almost 45 years ago. His “four little children” aren’t children anymore, and we shouldn’t be either. It’s time to grow up and realize the dream. It’s time to stop talking about the color of people’s skin and instead talk about the content of their character. That said, I have never heard a more racist speech than the one Obama delivered today.

In my youth my Mother drug me to church every Sunday. She was Southern Baptist. My Grandparents were General Baptist or Holy Rollers on any given Sunday and I’ve been to services at both churches. Over the years I’ve attended services of several other denominations. I cannot recall a single incidence of a pastor even speaking about race in any of those services nor can I recall any preacher ever trying to make the congregation into victims or blaming some specific group for all the ills that exist.

Oldnuke on March 18, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Andy is a silly little girl when it comes to the can-do-no-wrong Senator. Ugh. Wright is a hateful neo-Marxist, wedded to a anti-democratic racist philosphy. The fact that Obama spent 20 yrs listening to this garbage and that he subjected his children to it, tells me everything I need to know about Obama. I’ve no doubt that if he becomes President, he’ll surround himself by all sorts of socialist idiots.
The supposed freedom-loving Andy seems incapable of recognizing the dangers of an Obama Presidency: institutionalized anti-semitism, depressed markets, socialized medicine, racial tension, srrender to AQ, creeping shari’a, and all sorts of other evils.

Obviously, he’s got a nasty little crush on Obama… I see no other explanation. I just wonder if Sully’s husband knows it, and if he feels “betrayed.”

I agree with you completely there…

In either case it’s going to cause a bigger racial divide in this country than has existed (in the open) since the 60’s.

Maybe, maybe not…If Barack wins, Hillary’s supporters will still vote for him. If Hillary wins in a way that’s deemed fair, and if Obama accepts the VP slot, that’s a nightmare for us. The racial divide comes if either Hillary cheats or if she wins fairly and he refuses the VP slot.

I agree, but the divide is already there. It’s been fueled by the very programs initiated back in the 60′s to end it. This cycle has just brought it out into the open. Hillary can’t possibly win in any way that would be considered fair. Hillary will use any method available to win the nomination and I think somehow she’ll do. I think she’ll win. But for the sake of argument let’s say Obama wins then nomination but loses the general. If it’s close then there will be cries of a rigged election with racist overtones. If he loses big time then it’s going to be a black man can never be elected in racist America.

My one set of grandparents are very racial, they hate black people, they think they have caused every ill the world suffers to date, it’s a major problem in our family, tragic.

They use the n word, they say schwachas, my mother and father cringe, as we all do. It’s disgusting, especially for me. I live in NYC, a major city diverse beyond a reasonable doubt and this is whats up with my grandparents.

I try to remind that many people call them kikes and heebs outside of their own comfortable world, but it doesn’t work.

I will also say this – it’s amazing how raciallly motivated the Democrats really are.

Shameful isn’t it? Hillary Clinton has some nerve, what a ballsy one she is, to show her face after all she has done.

I guess after you have done all she has, ahem, shame isn’t really much of a factor.

They don’t get it because they live in NYC which is very jewish. And they are not the only ones, my parents say it’s common among jews in their age group. My mother has always said that if they had lived in say Selma AL in the 50s and 60s they would have a much different outlook on the situation.

Why do black people think they “own” racism? Why is it that they are the ONLY group in America that has EVER been on the receiving end of racism (in their minds) when Japanese people were put in internment camps, Jews into concentration camps, and whites were sold into slavery in the Barbaray Coast??

Black people do NOT hold the lock on slavery, and I am quite tired of blacks who think they do. If you were not a slave, and your parents were not slaves, and NOONE I know who’s alive has ever owned a slave, why must I constantly be reminded that I must now feel some sort of guilt because of it? It’s pretty much black and white to me. Both an absence of color. It what people do with their blackness and whiteness. There are a lot of white people I wouldn’t let in my school, hire for my company.

Let’s just all demand that whites and blacks do things the old fashioned way, earn it.

eaglesdontflock on March 18, 2008 at 2:15 PM

About the only thing I find amusing in this race-baiting game is that Hillary hand-picked Obama to be groomed into her 2008 VP specifically because of his race. Her intent was to be able to play both the gender card and the race card on the Republicans. She had no idea what she was getting into, and I do find it amusing to see Obama turn the race card on her.

However, that slight bit of amusement is not worth the race riots that Obama is trying to “inspire”.

Well, didn’t listen to the Messiah’s pseudo-sermon on his post-racial nirvana (’cause I had a good lunch and wanted to keep it in), but heard of his throwing his gramma under the tracks of the steaming Wright machine.

Noticed the other day, though, how the liberal wing of the FNC line-up was in full-up faux horror at the Pesky Preacher.

As in former civil-rights litigator Greta intoning low-voiced, furrow-browed worry over the “hostility” of the Preacher’s gospel, and getting an old legal sidekick (black, natch: “we’re like brother and sister, aren’t we?”) to conduct a phony investigation into the church by attending it last Sunday.

And who does this now-FOX producer Tod Sullivan choose to discuss Wright’s racist theology with as a seemingly random parishioner of the church: why, we see again the good Dr. Dwight N. Hopkins of the University of Chicago Divinity School, who is another nationally prominent proponent of that self-same a-hatin’ effluvium of Black Liberation Theology flung from the pulpit of that church!

Or slick Shep emphasizing Wright as Obama’s “former” pastor; doesn’t he know the guy still privately counsels the Messiah on matters of faith, by the oozy O’s own account?

As for sullied Sully, I used to read him in the immediate aftermath of 9-11, and even supported his musings. Then noticed the change in tune after Bush busted his dreams of a wedding song for him and his dude. Now clearly, he’s been rear-ended so often his butt has emerged in his brain.

What about some white anger- those of us alive today had nothing to do with slavery.I am tired of lies being presented as facts which prepetuates the black hatred and feelings of victimization. The black people living in the US today are the lucky ones- they don’t live in Africa with the real poverty and Aids. The worst off American blacks are better off than just about any black person in Africa. The cost of carrying the blacks with welfare, social services, 70% babies out of wedlock, increased school cost due to poor performance, school violence, low income housing etc- the cost of our prison systems because so many of them commit crimes. How many white deaths have there been from senseless black on white crime such as the 2 recent college girls? Might want to compare how many black deaths there were until they got civil rights( which they should have of course) to the deaths of black on white crime due to their resentment and poor upbringing. We have paid enough- they need to quit the victim mentality and move on. Be grateful they are here not in Africa. Tell me one Afrcian country where blacks have good lives? I am angry too- There are many good black americans who have proved that it is not color that determines success but character and ambition. The beginning to a good life- two parent family homes, staying in school and trying to learn and taking responsibility for what happens in their lives. I am tired of black anger- whites are suppose to feel guilty and be politically correct- it is time to stop that we need to get angry.Because society and people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are race baiters and profit from black victimization many have bought into this idea we still owe them .Get over it! Leave if you think you got such a bad deal. There are many of us that would raise money to ship you back to Africa if you think America is so bad.

Well said, very well said.

If I have not imposed slavery unto you, then do not impose the guilt unto me.
