Obama camp: No, Newsmax, he wasn’t there for the sermon on July 22; Update: Newsmax stands by its story, sort of

An (almost) airtight alibi, refuting the charge that he was present in church and nodding along last summer when Wright indicted the “United States of White America.” So much for Newsmax’s credibility. People were ripping on me in the comments to the Juan Williams post for having called the Messiah a shrewd politician but just look at the game he’s got us playing here — trying to place him physically at the scene of any single sermon at a church he patronized for 20 years, as if absent that evidence we might have to believe his feigned ignorance. Newsmax’s info was bogus? Well, maybe he really didn’t know after all!

Actually, I like this explanation better. Wait for it. About halfway through.

Update: Rasmussen measures the radiation.

Update: Via Ace, here’s Newsmax’s defense. They swear it’s all true, they’re just, er, not entirely sure anymore when it happened. Next.

There’s this newfangled invention that you should get familiar with.

I hate to defend Newsmax, because they are a mess, but the facts are what the facts are. And the fact is, Obama was in Chicago that morning.

Pablo on March 17, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Jeez, you mean like the Rev. J. Wright?

Actually, No. He ought to be kept in a padding room. America invented the aids virus and Pearl Harbor was intentional??

Oh Yeah, He’s nuckin’ Futs!

WayWard Fundamentalist Christian on March 17, 2008 at 11:21 PM

padding = padded :-/

Ooops.

He was not at the church.

I do not support him or the nutbag minister, but I also do not support the nutbag Newsmax either – again the pick your poison scenerio.

Nutbag preacher, nutbag irresponsible candidate and nutbag web publication = a ba-kook-um match lit in hell.

Newsmax has been proven wrongo on so many occassion, it’s a freakin’ bad joke. The guy should be taken behind the barn and then some.

He’s a liar, they are liars. If it was a liberal publication most of you would be heating up the tar…and plucking the chickens. On a par with Talon News and Jeff Gannon…LOL.

Mr. Davis said Secret Service were also present in the church during Senator Obama’s attendance. Mr. Davis’ story was first published on Newsmax on August 9, 2007. Shortly

Well. Either Hotair or Newsmax has to be right. I wonder if one or the other can back down into the truth????

Check out the Pastor’s Page from the July 15 service’s bulletin, here. A full-fledged rant against George Bush.

Interesting so many posters here think Newmax is trash. i like Newsmax. It is a wireservice grabber just like most newservices on the internet and it does a very good job.

Newsmax emails excellent summaries of breaking medical and science information and their financial emails of Newsmax articles and columns predicted the housing debacle years ago, as well as the coming commodities surge, and the liquidity collapse.

Newsmax is not the Huffington Post. The news they publish is very useful. The economic compendiums I get are packed with a ton of facts, so you can work out the math yourself.

Newsmax opinion writers including Barry Farber, David Limbaugh, Michael Reagan, Edward Koch, Dick Morris, Susan Estrich. They are opinionated but they are not droolers

I enjoy the stuff on global warming and keep many bookmarks.

I have been reading Newsmax for many many years and do not recall this ‘history’ of false reporting mentioned here

Now Bill Kristol is something else. I can’t stand the guy. Just an open borders Bush McCain pusher

If you are getting your news there I would stop immediately. Here are some confirmed and verified missteps – visit Wiki and read as well.

Newsmax is a bastion of wingnut lies and garbage, a disgrace to the Conservative movement merely by the fact that they have been caught so many times – bending the truth.

After the mysterious disappearance of Chandra Levy in 2001, contributor John LeBoutillier allegedly posted a speculative column on the site about the sex life of Representative Gary Condit, with whom Levy had an affair. The column quickly circulated among media members, even though NewsMax editors pulled it from the site.[9]

On May 26, 2000, Newsmax published an article claiming Hillary Clinton refused to meet with the Gold Star Mothers.[4] According to the Gold Star Mothers organization, this was false and “Senator Clinton greeted us graciously on Gold Star Mothers Sunday, 2005. This story was also debunked at other websites[5] and eventually led to a retraction by NewsMax.[6]

A 2005 NewsMax.com report about Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, claiming he was “teaming up” with rock band U2 for a fund raiser, gained considerable attention. Santorum had actually purchased 66 tickets to a sold-out show and was reselling these to campaign supporters at $1,000 per seat. The band issued a statement denying it was involved in the practice, saying, “U2 concerts are categorically not fund-raisers for any politician; they are rock concerts for U2 fans.”[10] Rather than admitting the error and issuing a correction, NewsMax simply changed its article about the fund-raiser without telling readers it had been changed, stating that the story was misinterpreted.[7]

During the debate over the failed 2007 Immigration Bill, Newsmax popularized opposition to an alleged “North American Union,” a dystopian vision of a future America where “NAU citizens no longer spend dollars or salute Old Glory. They spend “ameros.” [8] The “North American Union” is considered a conspiracy theory by popular conservatives such as Michael Medved [9], and has been debunked in the mainstream media. [10]

On August 9, 2007, Newsmax freelance reporter, Jim Davis, reported that Barack Obama was in attendance on July 22, 2007 during a controversial sermon giving by Jeremiah A, Wright, Jr. at Trinity United Church of Christ in South Chicago, Obama’s place of worship.[11] The claim that Obama was in attendance for this particular sermon was repeated by Newsmax as fact again on March 16, 2008. [12] A July 22, 2007 speaking schedule for the National Council for La Raza in Miami, Florida shows Obama as a scheduled speaker for 1:30pm. [13] Video confirms he attended the conference and spoke during his allotted time.

I dare you to PROVE that he was.

WayWard Fundamentalist Christian on March 17, 2008 at 11:23 PM

I didn’t say that he was at the church. I said he was in Chicago. You, however, said:

That was shot in FL. the day he was SUPPOSED to be in Michigan. Now get yer head outta God Damned ass and quit believing the bullshit of NewsMax!

And it turns out that he was also in Chicago (not Michigan, mind you) on that same day. So, your PROOF that he was not in Chicago is not PROOF and it would appear that in terms of your PROOF you have your HEAD up your God Damned ASS because, you know, airplanes.

Now, as I said, I’m not one to put my faith in Newsmax. But the fact is, Obama was in Chicago on 7/22/07.
