I always thought Smeaton did a good job of down-playing the attention and crediting his fellow defenders. He really had a hard time with the spotlight – that’s well documented. In fact, I think that is what endeared him to everyone – his humble attitude and his desire to continuously credit others. He can’t help that the media fixated on him alone as a result of his comments afterward. After all, what’s more eminently quotable than “We’ll set aboot ye”? Nothing, that’s what.

Yeah, as I recall, and youtube confirmed this for me, all he claimed to do was that he, and a bunch of others, went to try to stop the guy from attacking the cop. And then he helped a “female member of security” drag someone out of the way because they were injured. He also always seemed to downplay his part, that the real hero was the cop, was the firefighters, etc.

If the others who helped during the attack are mad that he got a medal and they didn’t, that’s not his fault, that’s their government’s fault, you know?

The way I recall it, it was common knowledge from the get-go that he didn’t do as much as others, and it was known that the one who did the most damage was the guy who injured his foot kicking the terrorist in the nuts.

What Smeaton was always known for was the defiant, contrarian swagger he sported in the aftermath that seemed to cut against the grain of majority European opinion.

That’s how I remember it too, in fact, I’m pretty sure he mentioned the other guys doing their part. And if he felt pride in the part he played, enough to coin that great phrase, well, good for him!

Not to me, I wasn’t there, but if he was in a local pub, I’d buy him a draught……

Either way, he was there, I wasn’t, and he had the balls to take action, whatever it was.

It’s gone too far now. Smeato will always be remembered ‘we’ll set aboot ye’, and a little dissent in the ranks won’t change that. One of the micro-eloquent but long remembered catch phrases of our times, made possible courtesy of the internet. Even if it turns out he did exaggerate a wee bit, I’d still buy the guy a pint just because of the ‘tude he projected on that day when he was interviewed. Plus, he honestly seems to be a really decent guy.
